All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

For a more detailed introduction to this forum, click here.

For related projects, see Wick Cleaning Projects and the Wick Check Project.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

[up] Got it. I was just worried it'd be something like a rename, which could potentially be more work than it's worth—I remember Berserk Button's thread having that issue.

EDIT: Wait nevermind Berserk Button had 30,000 wicks. This has much less. I rescind my claim.

21,000 isn't that much lower than 30,000, especially if many of the "surviving" examples need rewrites.

[up] Also a good point. I guess we'll see when the OP gets posted.

It's not just the wick count for Berserk Button and other heavily wicked tropes, the regrow fast and most cleanups only have 1-3 people working on them if there's anyone working on them at all. For Berserk Button, I wasn't convinced that a rename was going to do anything (people aren't misusing the trope because of the name in any case). If we are getting rid of the trope that's one thing, but a rename/redef for a deeply ingrained trope is going to be harder to make stick.

As for Big Damn Heroes, it's worth a wick check at least. I'd go to Trope Talk first.

Sorry, but I don't understand what's wrong with Big Damn Heroes. I only saw it used for last-minute rescues from tense situations, which is not PSOC in my opinion.

I'm mainly a fan of underrated media.

The "problem" is that that's not well explained in the definition of the trope (on the page or Laconic,) as well as the name being non-indicative.

It's just written as "the heroes save the day and it's awesome."

This is why it's best to put OP into the queue and if there's a problem, chat in Trope Talk before it gets its turn.

There's a difference between "too hard" and "we may not be able to clean it up over something trivial", it also needs discussed ahead if maybe the Description Improvement is enough.

So does that mean I should be looking into TRS action for Deadpan Snarker? A rename was mainly what I had in mind.

Maybe I should create that trope talk thread and get some more input there.

It can save a lot of time if it's discussed before it gets to TRS, maybe tropers will disagree a rename is even needed.

If Deadpan Snarker and Big Damn Heroes need more thorough discussion, take it to Trope Talk (or possibly Projects if cleanup is needed instead of discussion) instead of flooding this thread. (The post directly above this one should have been made on the previous page.)

[up]It did seem I misread, and Berserk Button was being compared to Big Damn Heroes' situation instead of being the main subject. Fixing that.

I just stumbled across Business As Unusual. It's about a group of people attempting to run a business that they have no business attempting to run. It has also collected a grand total of 15 wicks since its launch in 2010. It seems like there's a trope there, but there's also likely a reason that it has barely more than one wick per year of existence. I'll probably TRS it as "Not Thriving," but I'd like to see if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions before getting started.

Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.

[up] With those stats, any tropable ideas would require a re-run through TLP or a trip to the Trope Idea Salvage Yard. (I do think the name isn't the best, so if it gets TLPed or yarded it would probably need a new name at least).

I think you can just queue it up.

Sorry to double post, but I wanted to raise concerns about the Stockholm Syndrome queue entry—namely that there's no wick check, and there was already a discussion about it that was leaning towards "don't bring it in".

~Eievie Do you still want to TRS Stockholm Syndrome? Figured I'd ask in case you don't.

[up][up]It's on the queue. Also, the wicks are even worse than I thought. If I ignore the indexing and "see also" links, there are only three wicks left, of which one is misuse and a second is missing context.

[up]fwiw, the name was brought up as a possible issue on the discussion page. But also, looking at the low wicks, it seems like a combo of an unintuitive name and a lack of crosswicking (the examples on the page don't seem to be represented in the wicks) are the culprits behind this one not gaining any traction.

Very classic "Not Thriving" and back to TLP/cut and yard the concept situation.

Curse you random trope button for constantly feeding me ancient, starving tropes. This time it's Im Going For A Closer Look. It dates to 2011 at the latest (the page history was lost in the move away from the ptitle system), and has 16 wicks. It's also a stock phrase.

So, I was in the middle of wick checking They Do to see if it's redundant with Relationship Upgrade, but the thing is all the examples from They Do that aren't ZCEs can literally fit RU that putting them in a folder that says the same thing feels pointless/unnecessary. Do I still need to complete the wick check to take it to TRS? (I checked more wicks but still haven't added them btw).

You do (pun not inteded?)

"all the examples from They Do that aren't ZCEs can literally fit RU" needs to be proven, or rather, be proven that it's not a Sub-Trope that has something unique added.
