I just can't help but feel the Base Breaking entry on Chris is vastly whiny about him just being on the show.

If you don't mind my interruption, can narrators be considered Scrappies? If so, the narrator in WildBrain prints of Noonbory and the Super 7 would qualify. No fan that I know likes him because of how annoying and unnecessary he was. Even the show's most well-know fan (yours truly, lol wink) would agree.

Looking at Ethnic Scrappy on King of the Hill.

Kahn and Minh both fall here. While they just barely avoid being walking Asian stereotypes, they are both obnoxious jerkasses who take utter pleasure in being dicks towards their neighbors, including referring to them as "Rednecks" in a derogatory sense. While they do have some redeeming qualities (such as genuinely caring for Connie and Minh's gradual developing friendship with the women and even Dale), said good aspects of them are overshadowed by their flaws. One episode in the series had Kahn not only sexually harass Hank (all because Hank could see Kahn through Kahn's bathroom window), but also he and Minh would break into Hank's house, raid the fridge, mess with the furniture, and it's implied they would have sex there as well all the while mocking Hank and Peggy. There's being a jerk, and then there's blatantly breaking the law just for the sick amusement of it.

Considering how it written they seem to be disliked for their general personality and not having negative racial stereotyping so they come across as standard Srappies.

Found on TheScrappy.Video Games.

  • Descent II:
    • The guidebot, while useful and perhaps even necessary in later levels, is still infamous for irritating players to no end with its constant fluttering around you and demands that you follow it immediately. Even worse, when you shoot at it in frustration, it gets an attitude with you and may even shoot back with its flare. The trope you're looking for is Annoying Video Game Helper, not The Scrappy. Also, the example contains a lot of complaining and natter, as well as misinformation about the Guide Bot.
    • The thief bot is also a bit of a scrappy, but it is intended to be a pain in the ass. Which disqualifies it as an example. The character has to be unintentionally hated by the audience. If the entire point of this enemy's existence is to piss the player off, then it's a Goddamned Bat, not a Scrappy.

Was a consensus ever reached regarding Amber from Invincible? I looked back in the forum to see if she was already brought up, and saw some debate over an addition that got removed for being too early but the argument ended without any final say on whether it was accurate.

On August, Tinubu Toon 2002 changed the dog's entry in YMMV.Duck Hunt from this:

  • The Scrappy: The dog. Prior to and after Vs. came out, everyone and their mother wanted to shoot him and at least have a visible effect on it. This CollegeHumor short sums up everyone's feeling towards the dog.

...to this:

Not only is this a Zero-Context Example, but it's also blatant Word Cruft. Shall I revert it? Or should we just cut the example altogether? He breaks the "hated for plot-related reasons" criteria, besides the fact that he's listed as being Rescued from the Scrappy Heap due to his appearance in the Super Smash Bros. games.

Chopped. I've seen the user do a couple of Word Cruft edits, but since he edits a lot, I can't be sure if that's an issue worth pursuing or not.

YMMV.Futurama says Leela's parents are Scrappies. Is that really true? I only recall one episode of theirs being generally disliked ("Zapp Dingbat"), and even that was more because of forced writing than the characters themselves being bad. Their behavior in the flashbacks in "Leela's Homeworld" is generally seen as a heartwarming moment, so I doubt they're as show-ruining as a Scrappy usually should be.

(I also disagree that they're shoehorned into every episode they're in, as most episodes that feature them have them serve as at least thematically relevant, except maybe "Bender's Game." And they only separated in one episode, which was one of their last appearances, so that breaks the "consistently hated" rule to cite that as a reason for them being Scrappies.)

Yeah, I think that entry was added after "Zapp Dingbat" aired, and I don't recall them being actively hated by the fanbase. "Leela's Homeworld" is considered one of the sweetest episodes of the series, and that was the episode they were introduced in. I say they can safely be cut.

I have a question about this entry from Once Upon a Time:

  • Robin Hood racked up quite a few haters in Season 4, after he was thrown into a complex romantic situation anyone would have trouble with, and still managed to handle it in about the worst way possible. Particularly galling is how he doesn't seem to care at all that his current girlfriend Regina had executed Marian in their original timeline.
    • As season 4 progressed, it got even worse. Robin had an affair with Regina while his wife, or the woman he thought was his wife was in a coma and dying. Then, later in the season, he finds out that it was Zelena all along and the real Marian is actually dead, and he tries to get back with Regina the very same day. This is made even worse by the fact that he won't stop going on about how honorable he thinks he is.

I mean I not going to say that Robin is beloved by the fandom but I know quite a few people who really like him, just not his storyline. Most others are simply indifferent towards him and find him a bit boring. That said I do know some who just hate him and his actor. The main ones who hate him with a passion is those who ship Regina with someone else, namely Emmma. So I feel like he works better as a Base-Breaking Character than this. Thoughts?

I'm thinking, how about a forum game for The Scrappy, where we post misused or silly entries for characters?

I know we discussed before the subjectivity that Tier Induced Scrappy has but I'd like to offer some units from Fire Emblem Heroes where fan hatred goes beyond them being crap units:

  • Raigh used to be a decent (if niche) unit but as time went on and Power Creep became a thing, players have labeled him as useless. This would be bad enough but his off-putting art (and that's without getting into the artist's history) and smug attitude that makes him sound like he's hot shit when players just think he's shit in many respects, along with being very common even among 3-4* Reds, got to the point where he has borderline X-Pac Heat from how the playerbase just wants to see him go away for good.
  • Peri was already a contentious character in her home game, but once again her commonality even within the 3-4* pool plus players needing to endure two text-boxes worth of long text before they can get her to go away have also made her a prime target of scorn even beyond the fodder she gives.
  • Almost all the 3-4* healers are nothing to write home about, but fans seem to have a penchant for making Wrys their punching bag. Gacha games are already unfriendly towards older looking men unless they're a Silver Fox so having Wrys and his off-putting art makes him stick out like a sore thumb. Despite the fact that many other units similar to him are very common, he tends to be the main talking point for the colorless hell fans endure. Even IS is somewhat aware of his memetically bad status, as an official guide for how to send units home shows the picture sending three versions of him home, as if they knew how common it would be to get him and his ugly mug and that unless you need to give someone Live to Serve, it's safe to send him home.

[up]I'm pretty sure a Scrappy has to be hated for narrative/story reasons, so no. (I could be wrong.) The Peri thing sounds more like Scrappy Mechanic.

To trope, or not to trope...that is the question.

[up][up]That second bullet about Peri reads like an attempt to label her as a regular Scrappy even after she was determined to have too many fans to count.

Questioning this example from YMMV.Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders:

  • Even if their roles are small, nearly every minor antagonist in the franchise has some sort of following. It is near impossible to find any fans of Arabia Fats however. Strangely enough, he isn't disliked for his personality or what he has done, but rather the lack thereof. Nothing is ever learned about Fats' personality or motivations since he never makes an appearance in his arc and isn't revealed until his defeat. Most fans often label his arc as the worst in the franchise since his Stand, The Sun, is uninteresting with no cool powers and most of the arc just amounts to the main characters standing around until the end. Even worse in the anime where the whole arc is an entire 24-minute episode as opposed to two 22-page chapters.

As the example states, Arabia Fats is not hated so much as he's ignored or forgotten. I haven't seen too many people actively hate him like a Scrappy should be.

Idisagree Since: Jun, 2011
#4750: Oct 22nd 2021 at 2:35:55 PM

Arabia Fats is seen as one of the lamest villains in Jojo but he isn't brought up much at all (even negatively). He's not even considered the part's worst villain (that might be Alessi). Might as well remove him.

I see someone recently added Pete's Kingdom Hearts incarnation to the video game page (presumably without asking). As a long term member of the KH fandom, I haven't heard Any backlash against the character. In fact, a lot of fans find him an effective comic relief villain. It's true however that he doesn't get brought up much compared to some of the other villains but that's not the same as being hated. If anyone gets intense backlash, it's either Kairi or Lea.
