Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.
It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine
They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.
I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Explanation of what triggers the too-long page warning
Edited by kory on Dec 18th 2023 at 2:36:21 AM
I split off a few pages — now the warning's gone.
Characters.Pokemon Sword And Shield is giving the warning.
Eating a Vanilluxe will give you frostbite.Characters.Fate Grand Order Sabers N To Z has hit the too long page warning.
MB Pending | MB Drafts | MB DatesCharacters.Final Fantasy XIV Allies has just hit the "too long" warning. I would like to suggest splitting Gentleman Inspector Hildibrand characters into their own page, since Hildibrand's quests are outside of the main story and intentionally silly.

The fantasy RPG videos that play in my head are amazing. The Live-Action Television page for Warp That Aesop needs to be broken up into more sections. It's to the point that trying to edit the page is slow and my tablet itself crashed twice while attempting to do so.
I can't deal with these forums; they anger up the blood too much. It's not triggering the warning so we generally don't do anything about it. Sounds like the problem is with your tablet; I didn't particularly notice any problem.
Just found LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2. It's giving a too-long warning. I'm in the middle of something else right now, so maybe I'll get to it later. I'm putting it here both so I don't forget about it, and in the chance that someone else might beat me to it. And now I split off a bit of it, so it's no longer giving the warning.

Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.Works Needing Tropes currently has the warning, mostly because of recent edit by Amonimus that dumped everything "Needs Tropes" pages listed on Pages Needing Wiki Magic.
I did notice it, but I don't know what else to do beside checking every page and removing those that have enough tropes.
Edited by Amonimus on Dec 8th 2022 at 3:12:07 PM
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupI'm pretty sure we have a cleanup thread for that page somewhere; we can revive it and do exactly that.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessMoved a few pages from the "no tropes" list. Two of them have enough to not need placement anymore.
...that wasn't enough to remove the warning, but at least there was progress made.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportAnother page I found that threw up the warning is Characters.Death Battle Season Nine. This one should probably be split up like the other Death Battle Character pages that got too long (like seasons 2 & 7)
Characters.Cookie Run Kingdom got the too long warning. Perhaps the Epic Cookies can have their own page, as that's the largest category of folders on the page.
THE GOLDEN AGE WILL RETURN AGAIN!Anti-Frustration Features is giving the warning.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallMoved Kirby examples to AntiFrustrationFeatures.Kirby
It should allow for more breathing room.

Kirby is awesome.Kingdom Hearts: Disney Villains has the alert. This is kind of a headscratcher for me because I don't feel like any one character has a colossal folder that could easily go off on their own, it's just the sheer volume of Disney villains, many of whom have meaty entries and something to add.
I would start by suggesting a page for just Maleficent and Pete (and Diablo), they're the main Disney villains of the series who have importance in the overall plot. That being said, Hades is the most recurring villain of the franchise besides Maleficent because the games visit his world pretty much every game, and now it looks like he's going to become more important to the overall plot going forward. So maybe we could start with a "Major Disney Villains" page, for those four.
Maybe we could also form a page for villains who have allied with Maleficent over the series. This would give us Ursula, Flotsam and Jetsam, Jafar, Iago, Hook, Smee (just noticed he doesn't have a folder, hmm), Oogie, Lock Shock and Barrel. And in II if we count the villains who at least teamed up with Pete, it gives us Barbossa, Scar, the hyenas. Maybe form a page called "Maleficent's allies" or something.
The rest could be villains who didn't join Maleficent or Pete, who can still be sorted by world like they are now.
So:
- Major Disney Villains
- Maleficent's allies
- Other Disney Villains
Maleficent, Pete, Jafar, Hades, Captain Hook, Ursula, Oogie Boogie explicitly form own Standard Evil Organization Squad in the first game (with Riku and "Ansem" unofficially), joined by Scar and Captain Barbossa in the sequel, the rest are either minions or unaffiliated. So I think it makes sense to split those first.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupI think we could put the minions of the members of Maleficent’s group in there in their own “minions” section, it could help cut down on the original page length.
So the new page would be made up of the villains Amonimus mentioned plus Diablo, Cerberus, the Hydra, the Titans, Pain, Panic, Iago Smee, Lock, Shock, Barrel, Barbossa's Crew, Scar's Hyenas, and Flotsam and Jetsam?
I'm not sure where else to put this, but can the subpages of Kansas City Shuffle be folded back into the main page? Some of the pages have less than ten examples, and the whole combined page would be less than 180 000 characters.
Requests to re-merge subpages generally go in this thread.
(That said, I've been tempted to ask if Funny.Zero Punctuation can be cut down to six subpages since I felt like splitting the former subpage 5 three ways was overkill and having headers for each quarter of the year definitely is, and I probably would have done that both here and on a relevant discussion page. But that's because that was done to deal with a too-long page as opposed to being a straight-up unnecessary split.)
Good news, Works Needing Tropes no longer gives me the red warning. Reducing bytesize from 94348 to 92023 seems to have passed the threshold.
TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanup
ShoutOut.Fan Works is triggering the warning. Some of the individual works have long enough lists that they could warrant their own pages.
