YMMV / Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Go To

  • Ass Pull: Johnny using all the Fantastic Four's powers against Dr. Doom is this. Throughout the movie, Johnny is able to power-switch due to his first encounter with Silver Surfer messing with the cells of his body. This rule is completely broken for the final battle against Doom where after Johnny absorbs the powers of his teammates, he gets to keep his fire powers for no justifiable reason whatsoever.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: General Hager is a fan favorite thanks to how he was taken seriously by Reed Richards.
  • Fan Nickname: Gah Lak Tus is derisively referred to as Cloudlactus here, for randomly being turned into a giant cloud in this adaptation.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Stan Lee's cameo of him being denied entry from Reed and Susan's wedding becomes even funnier when you consider he wasn't even in the next one, Fantastic Four (2015), at all. No wonder he didn't cameo there.
    • Before the wedding, Sue is worried about bringing her kids into this life. While it's a reference to her and Reed's only child Franklin, they eventually do get another kid in the comics, a daughter named Valeria.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Many watch the film just to see the Silver Surfer himself.
  • Most Wonderful Sound:
    • The voice of the Silver Surfer. It is pleasing, cosmic and enjoyable to hear thanks to Laurence Fishburne's voice.
    • The Thing's roar to the bear. It combined his natural voice with a bear roar.
  • Never Live It Down:
    • The fact that the Fantastic Four apparently care more about Susan's wedding than the literal End Of The World As We Know It and go so far as to guilt-trip Reed when he actually tries to do something about it has been pointed out and endlessly mocked by a lot of viewers.
    • Early on, Susan uses her invisibility power to hide a zit on her forehead. Said zit never appears again, which leads to some people cracking jokes that Susan is apparently keeping her power active all throughout the movie to keep the zit hidden, even in life-or-death situations.
    • The Thing's reluctance to believe Johnny about the Silver Surfer is kind of ridiculous, since, as many a viewer has pointed out, it's by far not the most outlandish thing in this movie. And it's kinda ironic for the guy literally made out of stone to dismiss and deride the existence of a man seemingly made of metal.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Stan Lee as himself because he made his cameo really funny to watch.
  • The Problem with Licensed Games: The video game based on the film is below average and doesn't feature the cast of the film at all.
  • Retroactive Recognition: General Hager is Captain Holt.
  • Special Effect Failure: It's grossly obvious whenever the Silver Surfer is CGI (which he is throughout the majority of the film) or just a man with special makeup effects.
    • Speaking of make-up, Jessica Alba opted for a wig in this film instead of dying her hair blonde again. It is very noticeable.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Victor's comment about the Fantastic Four having caused more damage than they helped, is supposed to make them out as sympathetic Heroes With Bad Publicity. Only: he's right. The scene taking place just before this shows the team spectacularly failing to accomplish their actual mission and putting a lot of people in danger because they had to sort out their personal beef in the middle of an important scouting.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: The film was considered to be an improvement over its predecessor in many reviews, though not enough to be considered a good film overall, due to having more action than the first film. This can be seen in the Rotten Tomatoes scores for both films (the first film has 27%, while the second one has 37% with critics).
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Sue's brief death due to saving the Surfer from Doom.
    • The heartbroken look on Johnny's face when he returns from defeating Doom and sees that his sister has died without him by her side.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • The Thing and Alicia's screen time has been reduced from the first film, much to fans' dismay.
    • Galactus. He gets little screentime, he's a Silent Antagonist, he's defeated via Ass Pull that makes you wonder why the Surfer didn't just do that from the start, his What Could Have Been design is widely seen as superior for being Truer to the Text and genuinely intimidating, and his silhouette isn't even purple.
    • More like they wasted a perfectly good actor; Andre Braugher is completely wasted as General Hager, who's a pointlessly antagonistic Jerkass to Reed Richards and is unceremoniously killed after willingly giving Doom the surfboard seemingly out of spite.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The Fantastic Four don't come off looking too good in this film. Around the world, the weather is acting strange and giant chasms are opening up, signifying that something big is about to go down and it certainly won't be good for Earth. But the Fantastic Four (sans Mister Fantastic) would rather focus on Sue's wedding than a potentially world-ending disaster. Heck, when Reed actually tries to help out with the anomalies, the rest of the team give him grief, because how dare he try to save the world when Sue's wedding is on the line!
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The brief shots of Galactus' comics form as fire in the clouds look stunning.
