YMMV / Doctor Who S30 E15 "Planet of the Dead"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Christina is meant to be seen as a adrenaline junkie Femme Fatale with a heart of gold but can be more easily seen as a borderline sociopath when you notice she had no regrets about getting her partner arrested, is extremely selfish, arguably kissed the Doctor just to manipulate him and only wanted to come along because the police were about to catch her. Also her saving the people on the bus wasn't an act of selflessness, it was because she was one of the people in danger.
  • Designated Hero: Lady Christina de Souza is clearly intended as a heroic figure, but arguably nothing she does is heroic — only self-preservation. She steals for fun and ditches her boyfriend/partner in crime with a smirk when he gets caught by the police. She ends up becoming a Karma Houdini at the end of the episode. To add insult to injury, in the IDW comics, she still gets away with committing crimes after leaving Earth.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: A lot of fans are willing to forgive Christina for her past crimes and the vague implications that her actions are self-serving, even wishing she could have become a full time companion.
  • Evil Is Cool: Okay, "evil" may be a stretch, but Christina is otherwise a thief who is nevertheless levelheaded, intelligent, and stylish, winning much respect both from the Doctor and from fans.
  • Genius Bonus: The Tritovores' name is almost definitely an abbreviation of detritovore, the formal term for creatures that eat decaying animal matter and faeces.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The Doctor tells Malcolm to finish explaining before he dies of old age, stating that that would be a huge accomplishment for him. Fast forward four and a half years (in our time stream) and his next incarnation does just that.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Christina may be a thief who abandons her own partner to be captured in the beginning of the episode, but just like the Doctor, she does merely want adventure at the end of the day due to her boring life as an aristocrat, and it is hard not to feel sorry for her when the Doctor rejects her as a companion.
  • Magnificent Bitch: Lady Christina de Souza is a burglar who steals more for excitement than for money. After stealing an artifact from a museum, she escapes in a bus that ends up driving through a wormhole and being stranded on an alien planet. Christina quickly establishes herself as the leader of the group of stranded passengers while staying the most composed and levelheaded out of the group, and she persuades everyone into using teamwork to survive and return to their homeworld. She teams up with the Doctor, exhibiting herself as an equal partner and risking her life by winching down a pit to retrieve anti-gravity clamps that will get the damaged bus working again after cleverly figuring out how the Tritovores—a couple of aliens who are also stranded on the planet—ended up on the planet too. She eventually sacrifices the stolen artifact to help the Doctor use it to get the bus back to Earth.
  • Pandering to the Base: For some, Malcolm is an affectionate and funny homage to Adorkable fans. For others, he's heavy-handed, overbearing and not without a little Narm.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Daniel Kaluuya plays Barclay in this episode. David Ames, who plays Nathan, went on to be very recognisable from his long-serving role as Dominic Copeland in Holby City.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: McMillian is an Inspector Javert for wanting to arrest Christina. However, he is completely justified in arresting her, given that she stole a heavily-guarded artifact for the fun of it.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?: The tritovores are just guys in fly masks and boiler suits and are some of the most forgettable aliens in the show because of it.
