YMMV / Disney Illusion Island

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The trailers of the game showcase a very beautiful, vibrant and cartoony 2D art style that is almost comparable to Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Toku comes off more than a little shady at the start of the game, inviting Mickey and friends to Monoth under false pretences of a picnic and hastily asking them to gather the three tomes and become "heroes" with the help of a suspiciously arbitrary spell. Sure enough, he's the real Big Bad of the game, having deceived the protagonists into going after the actual heroes of Monoth.
  • Common Knowledge: The cartoony aesthetic of the game and the use of the classic Mickey Mouse design has quickly led to many comparisons between it and the Paul Rudish shorts, with many assuming they are using the same art style. However, even just a slight glimpse at the Rudish shorts will make it clear they do not share the same art style at all, with this game going for a more modern and sleek look than the Rudish shorts, which goes for a Denser and Wackier Retraux style based on the Classic Disney Shorts and the 50s animated Disney films. There's also the fact that Mickey is voiced by Bret Iwan instead of Chris Diamantopoulos who voices Mickey in the Rudish shorts.
  • Funny Moments: When Mickey and friends learn the truth about Grayzar and that Toku and his gang tricked them to defeating the true heroes, the four realize that they were the villains, which cues Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy dressed as Captain Hook, Jafar, Cruella, and Maleficent respectively with Donald's nonchalantly responding, "I'm okay with this."
  • It's Easy, So It Sucks!: One of the most prominent criticisms targeted towards the game even before its release was the lack of combat and the ease of platforming, leaving the game with little challenge in a normal playthrough. That's not to say the game lacks any challenge, as you can toggle the amount of hearts in a playthrough, and completing the game does unlock a Final Death Mode where if you get a game over, you are forced to start over from the beginning. Even so, neither option changes the level design itself.
    • Additionally, the Final Death Mode isn't as hard as it seems because it takes a couple of seconds to game over after losing your last heart, and within that window it's possible to pause and quit. Doing this every time you run out of health gets tedious in later parts of the game, but its certainly makes beating the game without a game over much easier than the developers likely intended.
  • Obvious Judas: Toku, due to coming off as very shady at the start of the game, was expected by many to be the game's twist villain. Turns out, this was indeed the case.
  • Spiritual Successor:
    • Immediately after the first trailer came out, many viewers declared this game to be one to Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends, due to how identical the gameplay looks and the game being 2D animated like Origins and Legends.
    • If the name Illusion Island doesn't give it away, the game is one to the Mickey Mouse Illusion series of games by Sega. Even the developers have acknowledged this connection and admitted that they took inspiration from the games, with some mechanics like the ability to drop ropes being taken straight from World of Illusion.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • Fittingly for a Disney game, much of the game's music sounds like ambient background music you'd hear at Disney Theme Parks. The MOPS theme in particular sounds like the stuff that plays near Toy Story Midway Mania and the Sky Below music is reminiscent of what plays in the Finding Nemo-themed building in Epcot.
    • The "hidden Mickey found" music in is similar to the "You Got a Star" theme from Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel.
