Woobie / Disventure Camp

Go To

Disventure Camp focuses a lot more on characters' personal struggles, be it in their backstory or during the show, than Total Drama. As a result, it has quite a number of The Woobie characters.

Iron Woobie

  • Ashley. Part of her house as well as the animals and crops her family owned were once burnt in a fire, which caused her develop a Primal Fear of fires. Her backstory becomes even more tragic when she reveals in All Stars that the fire was partially caused by a mistake on her part. With her having numerous siblings, it's also implied they might be not too well off. Nonetheless, she remains a positive and heroic person and even contributes to her team's victory by facing her fear of fire in a "What Do They Fear?" Episode.

Jerkass Woobie

  • Jared Johnson from the original version of the first season, Adventure Camp. He's more or less your typical host, but then you find out that he used to work as an intern for Chris McLean before being fired merely because the host didn't like his coffee. He tried to protest, claiming he needed the money for his mother's medication, but no one would listen. Vengeful, he swore that Chris would regret it should anything happen to Jared's mother. And then you realize he likely lost her, considering he went along with his Revenge plot against Chris in the present day.
  • Fiore. She mentions having a strained relationship with her mother. Her unhealthy home life is likely the cause of her becoming Enfant Terrible. Much like Ellie, she loses her money in her ending of Adventure Camp through a fault outside of her control, and even gets hit by a bus.
  • Grett. She experiences Parental Favoritism, which we can even see when she gets to call her mom, only for her to rub her brother's achievements in her face with it being all but stated that he's significantly more successful than her. This clearly puts a lot of pressure on her to win all kinds of competitions to finally achieve something herself and make her parents proud of her. The pressure is likely the cause of why she became a Manipulative Bitch, being insecure that she won't win unless she uses underhanded methods, hinted by her sabotaging her competition in a beauty pageant.
  • James. The Jerkass part becomes lesser with time due to his case of Love Redeems. However, his initial plan to use Aiden to boost his image online backfires on him, causing their temporary break-up. It's hard not to feel sorry for him when initially no one in the cast is at his side in the finale.
  • Karol. She's a grumpy woman who's a personification of a Karen stereotype, with even her label describing her as a bossy woman. However, she also comes off as Unintentionally Sympathetic Designated Villain. Not only is she socially awkard, she's been done dirty by Jaiden twice. The first time, James learnt from Aiden that she'd be willing to vote for one of their female teammates since their alliance poses a threat, something she had told Aiden in private, and reveals that information to the girls to turn them against her while also casting the deciding vote against her. The second time, after learning about her plans for revenge, which she apparently attempts to achieve through merely convincing Riya to vote for them, Aiden sabotages her during the challenge. She's devastated when she finds out he accidentally squished a tarantula which she had borrowed him and is eliminated via a Non-Gameplay Elimination as a result of a mere accident which breaks her leg. She also tries to protest, being determined to compete even with such injury, but to no avail, meaning she never got justice for being played dirty.
  • Riya. While she becomes a Jerkass towards the end of the season, it's hard not to feel sorry for her earlier when she's just a lonely girl alienated by her lack of allies and is revealed to only get uncredited extra roles in movies as of late. Depending on who you ask, her crying after losing in the finale, thus realizing her effort was All for Nothing may also make you sympathize with her.

Stoic Woobie

  • In a typical fashion for The Stoic that he is, Alec may rarely show emotions, but he goes through marital problems, which he hopes to fix by winning the show. Not only does it turn out that he was fighting a losing battle as his wife wasn't interested in keeping the marriage going, he ends up losing both of the friendships he's formed on the show. His thanking Patreons scene implies he's a Bookworm as a form of Escapism from harsh reality. Then, the premiere episode of All-Stars reveals Drowning His Sorrows as his another way of coping.
  • Ellie is almost as much of a stoic as Alec, but she also deals with poverty, still struggling to make the ends meet while working several minimum wage jobs. Her background forces her do eventually start playing dirty, even though she clearly regrets it. She also becomes All of the Other Reindeer, much like her love interest, as the few fellow contestants she got along with either end up betraying her to stay in the competition (Alec) or she's forced to betray them, costing her their friendship (Jake).
  • Tess acts as Emotionless Girl most of the time unless she's around people she's most comfortable with, but she's developed depression over the tragedies in her life.

The Woobie

  • Gabby, a Genki Girl and Granola Girl whose mental health issues and Motor Mouth tendencies cause her to be unpopular with just about everyone except Ellie. She's voted off her original team in Episode 1 and is put onto the other team where her only allies are Dan and Grett. Despite this, Dan votes against her while in a guys alliance, and Grett is using her and prevents her from interacting with Ellie.
  • Jake is a Nice Guy who lost his grandfather before the show, doesn't have much time with his grandmother, implications that he doesn't have the best relationship with his family, and an ex-boyfriend that cheated on him. Within the game itself, he has to deal with witnessing both Miriam, his grandmother figure, and Tom, his love interest, getting killed in a VR simulation he didn't know was fake at the time on top of his emotional baggage.
  • Miriam is the Sole Survivor of her family. Her husband and son got run over by a car on one day she baked cheesecake for them, resulting in her developing a fear of this specific kind of cake.
  • Tom is a Deep Cover Agent who got nasty scars after failing his previous mission. With his identity revealed and thus another failure, he's eventually fired from being a spy.
  • Maggy is Shrinking Violet Nice Girl who has a history of being bullied, which is even used as her label. On the show, she's often the victim of Yul's insults and antagonism.
  • Lake, a Nice Girl whose parents control every part of her life, deciding when she gets to eat, forcing her to study all the time even when she's on the show, and getting her into Arranged Marriage; with all that tension resulting in her being Prematurely Bald which, as expected of a young girl, she's conscious about.
