Trivia / Smash Remix

Go To

  • Ascended Fanon:
    • Remix Bonus mode, which allows any character to attempt any other character's Break the Targets or Board the Platforms stages, came about after users on the official Discord server started using GameShark cheats to do so as a Self-Imposed Challenge.
    • The addition of 1P-only Handicap options was added after being suggested by a user on the same server also experimenting with the GameShark. The notation of using the character's stock icon and difficulty color for these options was suggested by the same user.
  • Blooper:
    • When she was initially added, Sheik's victory theme was the same as Link, being a remix the main theme from The Legend of Zelda. A later patch changed hers to her own Leitmotif from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
    • Normally, the characters doing their various animations are supposed to be silent for their character bios. However, should Marth do his counter animation, his voice clip will play.
  • Development Gag:
    • Bowser, King Dedede, Marth, and Mewtwo were considered or highly requested at the time of the original's development. While they eventually appeared in the sequels, now all four of them are properly playable in this mod.
    • One of Sakurai's ideas at the time was have Fox be the main fighter while his teammates would be alternate costumes for him, but scrapped it because Slippy didn't have the same mobility as the others. Come this mod, and all four Star Fox members are playable as moveset clones.
  • Died During Production: Nickolas "Crookedpoe" Sanguinetti, a significant contributor to Remix early in its development as well as a pioneer and pillar of the Nintendo 64 modding community, died in 2022 during 1.3.0's development. That version's trailer was dedicated to him.
  • No Dub for You:
    • Because her voice clips come from the Japanese exclusive Rakugaki Showtime instead of Mischief Makers (which was released in English as well), Marina uses Japanese voice clips here.
    • Wolf also uses Japanese voice clips, but that's more to match Fox and Falco, whose Smash appearances didn't get English voices until Brawl.
    • On the inverse side, Remix as a whole is only available in English. Though it does have a sizable Japanese playerbase, they have to contend with not having menu options translated, as well as the Dub Name Change for Koopa/Bowser and the Dummy Corps/Fighting Polygon Team.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers:
    • Nintendo of America, true to their at-this-point-notorious stance on Game Mods and Fan Games, cracks down on Smash Remix tournaments when they're aware of them, like with Project+ and Beyond Melee.
    • The official YouTube channel for Smash Remix got terminated for several days shortly after the release of 1.5.0's trailer. An official post by the mod's creator stated that YouTube terminated the channel for somehow violating its policy on harmful or dangerous content and the Remix team's appeal was declined almost as soon as it was sent. Not that it stopped speculation of the termination being Nintendo's doing or brought about by the usage of "Happy Together" in the trailer. Thankfully, the channel was eventually restored, confirming it to have been erroneous.
  • What Could Have Been: This video uploaded to the game's official YouTube channel documents many pieces of cut content throughout its history.
    • Many characters were considered over the course of development that ended up being scrapped for one reason or another. These include Donkey Kong Jr, Pichu, Raichu, Meowth, Vaporeon, Mr. Game & Watch, Waluigi, Hero (Erdrick), Meta Knight, Boshi and Mach Rider.
    • Some of the characters who did end up in the final game had drastically different models. King Dedede originally looked more like his modern appearance before it was decided to base it more off his look in Kirby 64. Lucas was initially going to resemble his Earthbound 64 design, but it was changed due to the team finding it too uncanny.
    • A stage based on Uncanny Mansion from Wario Land II was planned, but scrapped due to the developers not being fond of the layout. It still exists in the data for the Dark Samus patch (tellingly, before Wario was added to the game), but was Dummied Out, and in subsequently overwritten with Kitchen Island from Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. However, the music track that was going to play on it continued to exist in the game until it was replaced with "Vs. Klungo" in 1.5.0.
    • There was brief discussion on having Conker able to potentially urinate on opponents like he could at some points in Conker's Bad Fur Day, but this never entered development due to a combination of not being able to figure out how it would be implemented, and overall not being appropriate for the audience which still has a lot of children in it.
    • Another scrapped move for Conker was being able to fire missiles. Unlike the above, this did make it into development, but was rejected in favor of his signature slingshot instead.
    • Dark Samus' neutral special was originally going to let her fire missiles much like Samus' side special in the official Smash games.
    • Banjo & Kazooie were going to have the Talon Trot be their running animation, similar to Smash Ultimate. However, it was changed as the animation didn't look good, especially when it transitioned between other animations.
