• Creator Killer: A string of critical and commercial failures in the 1990s and 2000s^note offset only by the box-office success of Raising Cain, the warm critical reception of Carlito's Way and Mission: Impossible achieving both pretty much ended his career as a director of mainstream, studio-supported films. Since Dahlia was released, he has only directed three films, all of which were produced and financed independently of Hollywood.
• Production Posse: Several examples over the years:
  • F. Murray Abraham, Melanie Griffith, John Leguizamo, Sean Penn, Al Pacino and John Travolta have all done two films each with De Palma, while Nancy Allen and Robert De Niro have each appeared in four of his films and John Lithgow in three.
  • Vilmos Zsigmond and Stephen H. Burum have been his most frequent cinematographers, while Gerard B. Greenberg, Paul Hirsch and Bill Pankow have been his most recurring editors.
  • Eight of his films have also been scored by Pino Donaggio, three of them by Ennio Morricone and two by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
• Real-Life Relative: Two of his movies had an actress whose onscreen mother was played by her Real Life mother (Jennifer Salt and Mary Davenport in Sisters, Amy Irving and Priscilla Pointer in Carrie).
