Ron The Death Eater / Overwatch

  • Certain characters tend to get demonized in fandom of certain characters or pairing. Prominent examples include: Genji in Hanzo/Cassidy (to create even more angst for Hanzo) and Pharah/Mercy (which became more prevalent after Genji/Mercy was teased around White Day) — if the author hates Mercy being paired with male characters, then every male character Mercy is usually paired with can get this treatment in Pharah/Mercy fics — and Soldier 76 or Ana (and even the entire former Overwatch organization itself) with fans that Leather Pants Reaper.
  • In a non-shipping example, Torbjörn tends to get heavily demonized for his caution and distrust towards Omnics in fics that Draco in Leather Pants the Omnics. Though this mostly went away once "Binary" was unveiled.
  • Hanzo sometimes gets treated as a unsympathetic asshole who's only caught up on Genji's supposed death just so he can mope around and feel bad for himself. People usually play up his angst almost to Reaper levels of edge to show how much of a pathetic loser he's become now.
  • Mei is a friendly and cheerful scientist who has dedicated her life to fighting climate change, dislikes bullies and has only the utmost respect and awe for her friends. So naturally the community likes to interpret her as a cold-blooded psycho who would like nothing more than to drive an icicle into your skull and slowly freeze you to death while she looks on with glee. But this is mostly in jest due to some odd quirks in gameplay than a legitimate interpretation.
  • Also mostly in jest, following Reflections Tracer sometimes gets characterized as a temperamental "social justice warrior" who hides behind her sexuality to justify some obnoxiously confrontational and self-righteous behavior. By contrast, the only display she's made of her orientation in canon is sharing a kiss with her girlfriend in private, and she's shown no inclination to bring it up unprompted among company.
  • Even when you take out factors like Genji and shipping, Mercy also often gets demonized into some sort of inhuman Mad Scientist type healer where she has disregards of moral when it comes to doctor-based researches as well as some nasty experiments she conducted, including how she operated on Genji. Her Child Prodigy status, the way that she's stayed young-looking despite her age, and how Blizzard giving her evil-ish alternate skins like the Devil or Witch Mercy didn't help, when in canon she's probably the most altruistic, pacifistic and generally kindhearted character in the game. It also doesn't help that Mercy's gameplay heavily draws inspiration from The Medic, who actually is that kind of amoral Mad Scientist 'doctor', giving some 'fans' reasons enough to run with the theory. This situation is shaken up a bit with the introduction of Moira, who is an amoral Mad Scientist closer to The Medic. So, Mercy either gets to continue to be portrayed as evil just like before, for laughs, or the mantle gets properly passed to Moira, which would no longer be the trope.
  • Just like how she can get hit with Draco in Leather Pants, Symmetra can get hit with this trope as well, when people forget or dismiss her inherently good intentions and her doubts towards the company after "A Better World". She's generalized into someone just as elitist and delusional as her corrupt co-workers from Vishkar (seeing that she doesn't show her doubts and continued to look for places for Vishkar to work on at her in-game quotes) to further glorify Lúcio's quest for freedom. There are also a handful of 'fans' that also made Symmetra highly antagonistic and repulsed towards any Overwatch members simply because they're now illegal and therefore an enemy of order or a terrorist group that has to be apprehended for simply existing, despite Symmetra herself being able to engage a semi-decent rivalry with Torbjörn, an ex-Overwatch member, thus her opinion on them are at least higher than to Lúcio, and has a quip on beating the more obvious villains also on Overwatch's radar (Talon or Junkers).
  • Vishkar Corporation itself. While there's no denying that it's shady at best, at least so far, its evilness is often overblown by fans to Stupid Evil levels that they disregard that its portfolio doesn't only consist of Rio, where it oppressed the people there with slave labor while spouting hypocritical remarks. Vishkar is also responsible for the gorgeous, highly advanced city of Utopaea, and their other successes have yet to be revealed. None of these matter to fans who think that anyone working for this organization have got to be Card Carrying Villains.
  • Speaking of corporations, Volskaya Industries leader Katya Volskaya often get this treatment after the unveiling of Sombra and the animated short Infiltration. When it was revealed that Katya has a secret deal with Omnics to help stave off the Omnic invasion in Russia while promoting Omnic racism, people like to overblow it, thinking that Katya is a corrupt person only out to fill her own pocket, and she was just using Zarya for her own nefarious ends. What's given so far is that we don't know the nature of the Omnics helping her as there were peaceful Omnics even during the crisis and if it wasn't for Katya's underhanded deal and racism propaganda, Russia would have been wasted by the Omnics during the crisis and calling the Overwatch for help would decrease its overall effort to end the crisis, thus her calling Zarya looks more like a genuine call for help from a blackmailed person.
    • Has intensified a bit in both directions since the release of the Searching comic revealed that Katya sees her actions as necessary for the survival of Russia, and did lie to Zarya about the nature of why Sombra was perceived as a threat.
  • Granted, we don't actually know for sure what the guy was like, but one interpretation that's been making the rounds posits that Widowmaker's former husband Gérard was an abuser. The grief she has openly expressed for him suggests he probably wasn't, though this is less of a theory and more of an excuse thrown around by shippers to justify having her shack up with whoever they want.
  • In general, any character who has enmity with anyone listed under Draco in Leather Pants can expect to get this treatment as a corollary. Soldier: 76 catches flak for being "responsible" for Reaper's current condition by being a glory hog who neglected his teammate, even though Jack was just doing his job and Gabriel took no initiative to talk with him about his issues, choosing instead to bottle it up until it all came out violently. Likewise, those who idealize Widowmaker can similarly dismiss Tracer and Ana for being unduly hostile with her, despite them not being privy to the information surrounding her origins, and thus only "guilty" of being less-than-courteous with someone they think is a traitor and know is an assassin who targets innocents and has personally introduced substantial pain and grief into both of their lives.
  • In some Reaper-centric works, Winston gets this treatment by making him not fully getting over what happened in 'Recall'. As if still being wary of a man who supposedly tried to find the locations of all of Overwatch member to kill them is something to just shrug about.
