Release: July 7, 2015
Film: Planet of the Apes (2001)
Tagline: Ready for more of Tim Burton’s monkey business?
This review provides examples of:
- Actor Allusion: In-Universe, the Critic identifies Helena Bonham Carter (Ari) as a future Tim Burton trope.
- Biting-the-Hand Humor/Self-Deprecation: The Critic's Honest Trailer pokes fun of the Critic, his Large Ham tendencies, his inexplicable ability to attract celebrity guests, and the fact that he inspired other hammy reviewers (while showing that he, too, was inspired by The Angry Video Game Nerd).
- The Cameo: Spoony reprises his role as Terl from the Battlefield Earth review.
- Crossover: The Critic gets his own Honest Trailer (complete with Jon Bailey narration).
- Fun with Acronyms: The Thade/Terl "campaign ad" is paid for by the Kinetic Need of Enforcing Effective Laws — as in the "kneel" of "Kneel Before Zod", complete with an image of Doug!Zod.
- Memetic Molester: The Critic's In-Universe opinion of Thade.
- Parody Commercial: The review is buffered by a fake campaign ad for Thade as President of the United States.
- Shout-Out: At the end, Astronaut Tamara falls into despair upon discovering that Jem is getting a live-action reboot, aping the Downer Ending of the 1968 film adaptation.Tamara!Astronaut: "You maniacs! You fucked it up! Goddamn you! Damn you all to hell!!!"
- Take That!:
- Besides acting as a tongue-in-cheek spoof, the Critic's Honest Trailer also took jabs at legal claims against his videos.
- On the "Thade for President" fake ad, Thade is shown side-by-side with Vladimir Putin, with cut-ins of "not-so-obviously-bad-guys" such as Zachary Comstock, Senator Palpatine and Skeletor.
- The ape army carries a Confederate Flag.
- The astronaut finds out her favorite cartoon is being adapted into a live-action film.
- When Zaius, played by Charlton Heston, gives a speech about the destructiveness of guns while in pain, the Critic snarks that, as the NRA spokesman, the speech must literally be killing him.
- Villain Team-Up: The fake ad in between both halves of the review is a campaign for Thade as President and Terl as Vice-President, with Zod as sponsor.
