Go To

Release: July 21, 2015

Film: Osmosis Jones

Tagline: Looking at the OUTSIDE of Bill Murray is hard enough.

This review provides examples of:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: When he learns that William Shatner voices the mayor of Frank's body, whose leadership has caused Frank to become a "fat, balding, unhealthy, egotistical pain in the ass", he felt the joke just wrote itself.
  • Call-Back:
    • Sadness remarks on how she misses the other white wall.
    • Sadness briefly mistook Osmosis Jones for a Wachowski fanboy by way of his name sounding like Jupiter Jones.
    • At the sight of Frank and a monkey struggling over an egg the latter stole (which, due to the camera angle, looked like dry humping), the Critic cannot believe he has to immediately recall the "Bestiality Is Depraved" angle from his Planet of the Apes (2001) review a fortnight before.
    • The "Ripoff Sidepot" from his Jupiter Ascending review makes a brief return by showing Up side-by-side with its copycat What's Up.
  • Cliché Storm: In-Universe, this is the Critic's thoughts on the movie. He liked the animation and designs, but felt the film had a paint-by-numbers buddy cop story and that the humor wasn't really funny.
    • The Missing Mom cliche was also noted as the beginning of the review, with a courtroom scene showing Bambi's mother get shot for being a mother and Walt Disney appearing from behind the judge, complementing him.
  • Drinking Game: The Critic challenges himself to take a shot for each Buddy Cop Show cliche Osmosis Jones exploits. He takes seven in three minutes, and would have taken another had his emotions not stopped him.
  • Eye Scream: What happens when the Critic attempts to put false eyelashes on a moving bus like late in the film.
  • Jedi Mind Trick: Critic gets annoyed with some bad acting in a scene between Frank and Shane (the toe scene). He wishes the pirate sign, which in his mind looks like Senator/Emperor Palpatine, could end the scene with a mind trick:
Critic!!Pirate Palpatine: You want to shut the fuck up. You want to order some of my delicious shrimp... with tartar sauce!
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While the Critic's emotions keep the upper hand over Osmosis Jones throughout the bulk of the review, they do admit that Inside Out probably did take cues from how Frank's subconscious was represented. Nevertheless, they proclaim they feel vindicated by the fact that Inside Out had a much better presentation.
  • Jive Turkey: The live action Osmosis Jones talks like this to Critics emotions.
  • Shout-Out: The underlying sketch in the review takes cues from Inside Out, with the whole of the Critic's supporting cast playing the show's interpretations of his emotions (Malcolm as Anger, Tamara as Joy, her brother Taylor as Fear, Beth Elderkin as Sadness, Joanna Kay as Disgust, and Christopher Harrison as Chris Rock).
  • Take That!: After the Critic goes drunk from his Drinking Game, his emotions are seen floating in a sea of beer filling his brain, with Sadness wondering if they are in Gary Busey's head.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: In-Universe. This is Chris Rock's attitude towards Inside Out. However the review itself concludes that this trope is not always true.
  • World of Pun: This starts irritating the critic, reaching a breaking point at the "Kidney Rock" scene which prompts an overload of idiocy in his mind, which prompts Sadness to start up a commercial.
