Recap / Infinity Train: Voyage of Wisteria: The Dark Parables Car

Go To

Chloe is in Alola, the Poké trio encounters an exiled Prince and the road to the Hazbin Car is nearing its end.

Tropes in this chapter include:

  • Aesop Amnesia: Alain is still keeping things to himself, particularly his guilt on how he "got it easy" compared to Hop and Paul. Thankfully, he manages to speak up in this car, lampshading that "old habits die hard".
  • Angst Dissonance: In-Universe, and part of the reason Alain feels like he can't talk about his issues...he's traveling with someone who was waterboarding and someone who had his memories violated, and he's having bad dreams about being cuddled.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Goh hits his father with several of these on learning that all the "work" he went through was so they could be financially secure enough to...
    Goh: "Be a family?"
  • Call-Back:
    • Chloe remarks that she has seen a statue of a Lycanroc, recalling the statue of Gladion and his (Midnight) Lycanroc when she visited the "Canals of Fondue Car".
    • Among one of the photos that Chloe sees is Ash and the Ultra Guardians along with the Ultra Recon Squad from Knight of the Orange Lily.
    • On returning to Azada, Hazel remembers that she was present when Grace and Simon were banned from the car, and wonders if that bad includes her.
  • Cliffhanger: Mad Ben flies off as "Mad Big Chill" towards the Hazbin Car, observed by Sarang.
  • Continuity Nod: Chloe states that she's seen Lana as one of the "Alolan Idols".
  • Evil Is Petty: Despite knowing that it won't affect any of the people he directly resents, Mad Ben still makes a point to destroy the statue of the White Gestalt he sees.
  • Exact Words: When Hazel remarks on how Titus banned her from entering Azada, Amelia clarifies in that Titus banned the Apex and Hazel is not Apex.
  • Failure Hero: Trip feels like this in hindsight, assuming he would be the outsider riding in with the hard truths everyone needed to hear, but screwing up on multiple fronts...between encouraging Ash's guilt complex and making all the wrong decisions in handling Goh.
  • Failures on Ice: Paul's attempt to avert this is actually more embarrassing than a straight-up pratfall, at least according to Hop.
  • Forced Transformation: Electivire gets transformed into a frog due to the Prince's curse, and this has apparently befallen a lot of other passengers and denizens in the car.
  • Freudian Slip: Hop exposes that he is not over Alex when he accidentally asks "Alex"/Alain for help giving him a boost.
  • The Glomp: All of Ash's Alolan Pokémon act like this to Ash and then Serena, Trip, and Chloe.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Rotomdex starts gushing over how Chloe is an internet sensation which is not helping since it reminds Chloe about how her brother caused a lot of damage that ruined her reputation.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Ikuo's fixation on work clearly helped fuel Goh's fixation on Mew...and they both realize it.
  • Internal Reveal: The Alolan class, alongside Ash, Chloe, Trip and Serena learn about the White Gestalt with Lillie shocked that Gladion kept even more secrets from her.
  • Irony: Tokio finds it amusing that for all of Gladion noting how knight quests are horrible, his house is essentially a castle.
  • Mister Exposition:
    • Princess Ivy gives the backstory about the Exiled Prince.
    • Apparently, Gladion sucks at being this, as his rendition of his exciting journey on the train managed to put his Pokemon to sleep. To be fair, Gladion notes this is the fifth rehearsal so far.
  • Noodle Incident: Gladion notes that it's very good that video and photo evidence doesn't work else Specter would have a ton of photos from an unknown car.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing:
    • True to form, Ikuo. After kicking off a phone call by revealing that he's found out about Goh's childhood depression now, his offering to retire and assuring Goh that they'll be fine when he does cause Goh to realize that all the work that he and Kurune had to do that kept them away from helping him was never mandatory.
    • Trip reflects on his actions in Blossoming Trail and sees just how dumb an idea isolating Ash from Goh was...Ash was the only person Goh would listen to at that point, and there was a lot more going on that just a childish tantrum that would burn itself out.
  • Parrot Pet Position: Post-transformation into a frog, Electvire is able to do this with Paul. This results in a slight crash when the curse is undone.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The main car of this arc is from the Dark Parables Hidden Object Game series, particularly the second game The Exiled Prince.
    • The song that Goh's group listens to in the Papercraft Opera Car is from Cold Case.
    • The shrine for Cindrella shows both her and her stepsister Anastasia.
  • Somebody Doesn't Love Raymond: Kiawe is the only classmate who isn't particularly friendly to Chloe...his beliefs about family and home make him less than sympathetic about runaways who mess up their siblings. Luckily, Chloe accepts that and leaves the matter alone for now.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: Hop is scared that he has this regarding Alex, and worries about admitting the fact that a part of him still misses Alex and is comforted by his memory.
  • Terrible Artist: Gladion sucks at making power-point presentations. His illustration of the Spiral Car is made with crude permanent marker and he uses comic sans for the bullet points.
  • Trauma Button: Seeing the Exiled Prince gives Alain flashbacks about Walter which he unleashes with a loud scream.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Serena tells Trip that he did do a lot to help, particularly in revealing about the Infinity Train, and helped point out what people did wrong and how they can be better in regards to Chloe. He had no idea that Goh had so many mental issues in the first place.
