Señor Zapatonote

Will and Sue's teaching abilities are questioned after there have been some complaints and is revealed that there is a spot for tenure. A student is questioning Will's ability to teach Spanish, and after Sue's ability to coach the cheerios is questioned, Coach Roz Washington steps in to try and steal her job. Will goes to a Spanish night school lesson and meets David Martinez who speaks fluent Spanish and brings Mr. Martinez to Glee Club. Sam and Mercedes seek Emma's guidance after they kissed, although Mercedes is dating Shane, and Emma advises them not to talk until the end of the week, only to speak through song. Eventually, to settle things, Santana challenges Will and David and encourages them to have a Spanish-off.

Next Time: Love, sweet love.

Songs:

  • "La Cucaracha" by Gipsy Kings, performed by Will, Finn, Puck, and Artie.
  • "Sexy And I Know It" (partially translated as "Sexy, y lo sabes"), by LMFAO, performed by David Martinez, Brittany, Mike and New Directions.
  • "Dang Diggy Dang" by The Beatards, performed by Brittany and the Cheerios!
  • "Don't Wanna Lose You" by Gloria Estefan (Santana's mom!), performed by Mercedes.
  • "Bamboleo/Hero" by Gipsy Kings and Enrique Iglesias, performed by Sam with New Directions boys.
  • "La Isla Bonita", by Madonna, performed by Santana with David.
  • "A Little Less Conversation" (partially translated as "Un poco menos conversación"), by Elvis Presley, performed by Will with Brittany and Mike.

Tropes:

  • Actor-Inspired Element: Señor Martinez takes his surname from his actor's real name.
  • Bilingual Bonus: "Yo soy caliente" doesn't mean one is attractive, it means one is horny.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: With a dash of If It's You, It's Okay. Even the otherwise bedrock-solid confirmed hetero Artie finds Mr. Martinez attractive.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Naya Rivera doesn't actually speak Spanish and is from Valencia, California.
  • Hipster: The Glee boys perform "Hero," wearing strange elf-boots. These apparently belong to "Mexican hipsters."
  • Innocently Insensitive: Santana doesn't care so much about everyone else being offensive because it's what Will's taught them, but he should know better.
  • Jerkass: Will, deliberately, getting mad at Santana for filing a complaint against his teaching ("you're messing in adult affairs") and telling her that he's an adult and so can teach kids, her included, every false thing he wants to about her own culture and she can't think that he's wrong or call him out.
  • National Stereotypes: From Will's teaching you will learn that all Spanish culture ever is some conglomerate of Spexico, Latin Land, Mayincatec, Banana Republic, and Toros y Flamenco.
  • No Periods, Period: Averted when we find out that "our" (Mercedes', Rachel's, and Kurt's) periods come at the end of the month.
  • One-Liner:
    Brittany: I'm bilingual.
    • It's funny because Brittany actually does fluently speak Spanish.
  • Reality Has No Subtitles
  • Reality Subtext: Dianna Agron speaks Spanish and knows the culture, which is why Quinn is present and clearly looks offended by the offensive stereotype run.
  • Shown Their Work
  • Take That!: Everyone's Spanish songs have been horribly stereotypical and culturally false. Santana takes a mostly English song and a Little Black Dress to do hers. Will's confused about this performance and unimpressed with Santana. It's clear that she's showing his uneducated ass that there are Latinas who are just like real people. He doesn't seem to learn until she snaps at him.
  • Toros y Flamenco: Will's final performance in Spanish.
  • Wham Line/Armor-Piercing Question: "Why did you even choose to become a Spanish teacher?"
