But Not As Cute As Pushkin

Miss Patty's fortieth anniversary in showbiz is coming up. It's on Luke's dark day, the thirtieth of November, the anniversary of his father's death. Headmaster Charleston asks Rory to show a student named Anna Fairchild around Yale to see if she wants to go there. Rory turns out to be bad at babysitting, even when they are in their teens. Headmaster Charleston said Anna reminds him of Rory, which Rory takes to mean bookish and academic, but at the end of the day he probably meant excitable, into fashion, and prone to getting carried away.

Luke is angry that Mrs. Thompson is moving to a nursing home and can no longer store an unfinished boat after thirty-five years of storing the unfinished boat. Paris tries speed-dating.

Tropes

  • Arranged Marriage: Rory plays a revenge prank on Logan where Richard pretends he's already arranged their wedding, pre-nups and all.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Richard tries repeatedly to remind Lorelai of who Mitchum Huntzberger is. Finally she pretends to remember him, then backs out.
  • Bookworm: Rory waxes poetic about the library books at Yale.
  • Continuity Nod: In season one, Rory commented on Lorelai's flirting habit of flipping/twirling her hair. This episode, Luke mentions it.
  • Drama Queen: Pasqualie needs a lot of validation.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Lorelai and Sookie name themselves "the crazy pine-scented ladies".
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: Although it might have been mostly confusion.
  • Little Known Facts:
    • Rory tells Anna about the Women's Table being designed by Maya Lin, who also designed the Vietnam war memorial.
    • Rory gives Anna a guided tour of Yale where she mentions a rumor that you automatically graduate if you become sufficiently fluent in Latin, Greek and Hebrew.
Rory: Imagine how many tables you can wait with those skills.
  • Meaningful Name: Defied. Paris is not named for the city as far as she's concerned. Her speed-date Jack is also not named for his parents proclivity for changing tires or plugging phones.
  • Metaphorgotten: Kirk talks about how we all have a touch of darkness, but Luke is more touched than most. Grabbed, in fact.
  • Milestone Celebration: In-universe, Miss Patty is celebrating her fortieth anniversary in the business we call "show".
  • Naïve Everygirl: Marty calls Rory this when she refuses to see that Logan likes her, and she confirms it a moment later when Headmaster Charleston calls and asks about Anna and she doesn't get suspicious that he would be calling her this late to ask about Anna.
Headmaster Charleston: Then I'll inform her parents the underage girl the Yale campus police found when they broke up a rather raucous party is in fact not their daughter.
  • No, Except Yes: Lorelai claims not to slip in her tub, but when Kirk says that doesn't work for his sales pitch she says she actually never stops slipping in the tub even when she's outside it.
  • A Rare Sentence: Angrily: "Yes, I have to go to the fro-yo social!"
  • Shout-Out:
  • Speed Dating: Paris tries this. She meets her editor, Doyle.
  • Title Drop: Rory says the title when Anna is gushing about how cute Logan is.
  • Verbal Backspace: Rory tells a story about a bench and Eli Yale, then realizes she got the wrong bench.
Rory: Keep the story, change the bench.
  • Wild Teen Party: Anna, high-school sophomore, goes to a college party that gets raided by the campus police.
