Recap / From Dusk Till Dawn S 1 E 2 Blood Runs Thick

Go To

Seth and Richie continue to head for the border, but their situation is complicated by both Richie's increasingly strange behavior and the presence of a bank teller they took hostage during their heist; meanwhile, Freddie is on their trail. Elsewhere, Pastor Jacob Fuller takes his two teenaged children on a roadtrip to Mexico following the recent death of their mother, but eldest daughter Kate suspects that he's hiding something.

Tropes:

  • Arc Symbol: The eye symbol on the handle of Richie's knife shows up repeatedly throughout the episode:
    • It's revealed that he drew it in marker pen on the palms of the female hostages from the liquor store.
    • He also draws an enlarged version in the sand with the blood of a dead dog that he finds by the road.
  • Asian and Nerdy: Scott Fuller apparently writes Elvish poetry and uses "frack" as a swear word.
  • Badass Longcoat: Carlos wears a floor-length leather duster to complement his hat.
  • Bank Robbery: The Geckos' thirty million dollar bank heist is shown in detail.
  • Berserk Button: Richie punches Seth in the face for calling him a whackjob.
  • Black Comedy: Carlos's speech about souls coming in different "flavors" before he kills Kyle.
Carlos: Souls are like... popsicles. Some are sweet, some are bitter, some are strong, some are weak, just a whole rainbow of kinds. Might as well come in a variety pack. Yeah, cherry-lime, peach-mango, banana-strawberry... (he turns around to reveal his Game Face)... What flavor are you, Kyle?
(Carlos drains Kyle's blood before pulling back with a thoughtful look.)
    Carlos: ...Cherry-lime.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Kate has shades of this, though it's difficult to blame her given her father's behavior.
  • Brick Joke: Richie's fondness for horchata.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • Freddie finds Richie's knife after Earl took it from the liquor store bathroom in the previous episode.
    • Monica the bank teller finds her daughter's cell phone in her jacket and neglects to turn it in with her own when Seth collects the hostages' phones. This becomes important when the brothers take her hostage and Freddie calls the phone, allowing him to trace their location.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: It's made more apparent in this episode that Seth is desperately trying to keep Richie sane and minimize his risky behavior.
  • Crazy Survivalist: Richie.
Richie: The man who cannot build his own shelter or gut his own food is just courting disaster.
  • Crisis of Faith: Jacob Fuller is apparently suffering from one of these after his wife's death, having abandoned his congregation and bought an RV to take his kids to Mexico.
  • Flashback: The present-day action is interspersed with flashbacks to the bank heist which took place prior to the pilot episode.
  • Flashed-Badge Hijack: Freddie pulls this to commandeer a random passerby's jeep and pursue the brothers after the liquor store holdup.
  • I Have a Family: Said word-for-word by Monica when Richie pulls a knife on her.
  • Like Parent, Like Spouse: Scott accuses Kate of having a case of this.
Scott: You're like a classic Freudian test case, you know that? Preacher's daughter in love with a boy who texts Bible quotes[...] You're basically dating Dad.
  • Missing Mom: Kate and Scott's mother apparently died in a car accident several months ago.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Kate calling her boyfriend to pick her up gets him killed and introduces the family to Carlos.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Kyle stops to give Carlos a lift and gets killed for his troubles.
  • Only a Flesh Wound: Richie doesn't seem overly concerned that he still has a gaping hole in his hand after getting shot.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Carlos drains the blood from Kyle's neck like a vampire but more closely resembles a snake in his monstrous form, with a Game Face that includes scales and vertical pupils, and fangs that swing down from the roof of the mouth like a snake's. He can also apparently assume the form and memories of his recent victims, as he does with Kyle.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Seth chastises Richie for taking a hostage from the bank heist; not on any moral grounds, but because it could get "messy".
  • The Promised Land: Seth talks about El Rey, where the brothers are headed, like this.
  • Punk in the Trunk: A cutaway reveals Monica Bound and Gagged in the trunk of the brothers' car, in a recreation of the scene from the movie.
  • The Reveal: Carlos is a culebra.
  • Safecracking: This is apparently Richie's specialty.
  • Sanity Slippage: Richie's visions intensify and his behavior becomes increasingly erratic throughout the episode.
  • Second Episode Introduction: The Fuller family.
  • Seinfeldian Conversation: Seth and Richie have a long, rambling conversation about Mexican food at the beginning of the episode, in a flashback to before the bank heist.
  • Shout-Out: Seth calls Freddie "Tonto".
  • Trunk Shot: Used when Seth and Richie pop the trunk after hearing Monica's spare cell phone ring.
  • Weakened by the Light: Downplayed; Carlos can walk in the sunlight, but he has to keep covered up or any exposed flesh begins smoldering.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Scott calls Kate out for planning to abandon him with their father.
