"Don't go in there!"

Bored with their suburban antics, the Eds build a city in the lane. The kids are amazed by this city, but Jonny thinks the city is a bad place—and he's less than pleased when Plank goes into it.

Tropes

  • Absurdly Cool City: The Eds created Ed-Tropolis with the vision of being a wonderous place that would captivate the kids. And it works!
  • All for Nothing: The elaborate game that the Eds perform for Jonny results in him catching on and walking away without paying them.
  • Alone in a Crowd: Briefly happens to Jimmy when he finds himself alone in the city with the cardboard cutouts of city-folk surrounding him.
  • An Aesop: Big city life ain't all it's cracked up to be/the big city can change people for the worst.
  • Bavarian Fire Drill: The Eds try to scam Johnny with a game of Calvinball where part of the rules is giving them money. It almost works:
Eddy: That's home plate, and here's the banana!
    Johnny: Banana?
Eddy: Now put the quarter in the jar! Put in the jar, quick!!
    Johnny: (Beat) ...Nice try, Eddy.
  • Bird-Poop Gag: Eddy tries to drop yogurt on Nazz, pretending to be a pigeon. Ed misses the point and tries to drop an anvil.
  • Cassandra Truth: Jonny tries to warn the kids that the city is a scary place and that they're better off not going, only to be ignored as the kids walk on by. It's downplayed since Ed-Tropolis isn't intentionally malicious or corrupt.
  • Company Cameo: The anvil that Ed drops has "AKA" written on the side in reference to AKA Cartoon, the show's producer.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: Nazz is visibly upset as Double D keeps dragging her across to avoid falling yogurt droppings. It doesn't help that Edd does nothing to explain why he's trying to help her.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: While listing off the other kids' activities, Eddy mentions "Nazz lounging" twice.
  • Downer Ending: Jonny manages to lose Eddy's hard-earned money which gets taken by the other kids. Then Ed leans on a building which completely destroys the city ala domino effect. Oh and he puts a worm down Eddy's shirt.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Eddy shows genuine concern and horror when Ed drops an anvil down at Nazz, saying he can seriously hurt someone with that. Later episodes would have Toon Physics being the norm, with even more outlandish/dangerous stuff being dropped on someone with no one batting an eye. Though in this case it is at least part of a This Is Reality joke combined with Nazz being one of the few people Eddy actually likes.
  • Hope Spot: Jonny looks like he's about to return Eddy's money after they find Plank only for Plank to tell him to drop the money anyway.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Jonny complains to Plank that talking to urbanites is like talking to a piece of wood.
  • Impact Silhouette: After Jonny jumps into a garbage can to avoid getting run over by Plank, he leaves an impression of his head in the can.
  • Karma Houdini: Jonny faces no consequences for robbing Eddy and making him lose the money he legitimately earned for once.
  • "King Kong" Climb: Jonny climbs one of the cardboard buildings and threatens to drop Eddy's money if they don't find Plank.
  • No Sympathy: No one bats an eyelid when Jonny robs Eddy out of anger.
Eddy: Did you see that?! That bald kid took my money!
    Sarah: Tell someone who cares.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Jonny is furious with the Eds for corrupting Plank's mind with their makeshift city to the point where he attacks Eddy and steals his money.
  • Pet the Dog: Kevin is dazzled by Ed-Tropolis and commends the dorks for "making something cool for once".
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Jonny confronts Eddy at his "tattoo" parlor and shouts "Your city's corrupted the mind of my pal Plank! Surrender, urban fiend!" before leaping at him and mugging him, stealing his jar of quarters.
  • Squirrels in My Pants: Ed puts a worm down Eddy's shirt, causing him to squirm uncontrollably.
  • Tattoo Sharpie: Ed runs a tattoo parlor and uses colored markers.
  • This Is Reality: Eddy uses this when he points out Ed dropping an anvil as a joke could actually hurt Nazz.
Eddy: Ed, you're gonna hurt somebody! This ain't a cartoon!
  • The Worf Effect: Despite being the second-strongest kid in the group, Rolf gets easily beaten up by Sarah (though she does have Jimmy helping her).
