Recap / Carl S 1 E 5 Motorhome Trip

Go To

Carl, Blooper, Dry Bones, Boo and co. take Dry Bones' motorhome to the forest until Gooper and his gang get in their way.

Tropes

Both versions:

  • Abusive Parents: Dry Bones' father does nothing but verbally and emotionally abuse him. His grandfather isn't any better.
  • Bad Liar: Dry Bones lies to cover up the fact that he's a loser with a bunch of Blatant Lies about his home life and his motorhome.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Calvin showing up at the last moment and defending Carl and his friends from Gooper.
  • Camping Episode: Carl and Co. go to the lake in Dry Bones's motorhome.
  • Cop Hater: As seen by his impression of Calvin, Dobrimir really doesn't like the cops.
  • Pet the Dog: For all the trouble he has caused with his lies, Dry Bones does manage to make up to Talia for everything by getting her her job at Goomburger back.
  • You Are Fat: Poor Talia is on the receiving end of this in the classic episode, with Gooper and his cronies constantly referring to her as "the fat one". It's downplayed in the remastered episode where no one directly mocks her for her weight, but Talia comments on feeling insecure about her body. Carl however assures her that she has nothing to be ashamed of and that she looks fine the way she is.

Classic version (Get out here with your tropes off! *chuckle*''):

  • Big Ball of Violence: Gooper and his gang wreck the motorhome with a big ball of violence.
  • Camping Episode: The episode centers around Carl and his friends taking Dry Bones' motorhome into the forest where they spend the night.
  • Karma Houdini: Gooper, after harassing Grace and getting caught by the police gets away with no punishment.

Remastered version ("You wanna trope up to me, huh? Doesn't feel so good, does it?"):

  • Ambiguously Bi: Flaig makes a comment about finding Carl cute. In other episodes of the show he has also shown attraction to girls, mainly Kylie.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Bob, Liam and Flaig all mention the times Carl had successfully one-upped them, with the first two being Call-backs to the previous two episodes and Flaig mentioning how he did not give him a pencil sharpener in Math class (which did not occur in either of those episodes).
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Downplayed. Carl tries to stand up to Gooper after he cat-called Grace, but Carl ends up being punched in the face by Gooper and almost ending up with several broken bones. Thankfully, Calvin arrives on the scene just in time before Gooper almost tore his arm off.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Downplayed on the "Avoided This!" part because Kylie, Roxanne and Blooper all mention how Dry Bones could have avoided some of the episode's events if he had did not spend a majority of the episode lying about his motorhome or paying proper attention to Talia.
  • Crowbar Combatant: Averted. Gooper was very close to hitting Carl on the crotch with a crowbar, but Calvin arrived on the scene before he could even try.
  • Disgusting Public Toilet: The "public" part is averted, but the bathroom in Dry Bones' family's motorhome is absolutely filthy.
  • Epic Fail: Dry Bones jumps off a cliff and breaks his leg.
  • Foreshadowing: Logan telling Carl not to cry if Grace rejects him and Mary-Lynn constantly calling Gooper and yelling at him is what sets up the events for the next episode.
  • Groin Attack: Gooper mentions wanting to hit Carl on the crotch with a crowbar. It's a good thing Calvin showed up when he did.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Liam and Bob are far from kind and ordinary people, even they can get really fed up with Mary-Lynn due to how clingy and annoying she can be. Gooper refuses to do so because, even though he also finds Mary-Lynn to be annoying, he only dates her for her body.
  • Noodle Incident: When he was a kid, Carl went to the beach with his friends and was scared the fishes wanted to attack him. He covers it up to hide that he wasn't scared, he didn't feel like going in.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When the cops show up, Liam, Bob and Flaig drive off on their motorcycles.
    Liam: *scream* It's the feds!
Bob: I ain't going back in there!! Scram!!
  • Shout-Out: Gooper mentions a certain quote:
  • Straw Misogynist: Gooper cat-calls Grace and outright admits that he only dates Mary-Lynn for her body.
  • Tempting Fate: The moment Carl mentions how things could not get any worse after Dry Bones broke his leg, Gooper, Liam, Bob and Flaig all show up to further ruin their day.
