Finn and Jake storm Magic Man's house to rescue his new apprentice.

Tropes:

  • Baphomet: M.A.R.G.L.E.S. in her activated form is patterned after him.
  • Brick Joke: Magic Man makes a metaphor about Betty seeing "a coconut crab who swims in your neighbor's pool at night". Near the end of the episode, after Betty absorbs Magic Man's powers, she sees a vision of a crab with Simon's face climbing out of a swimming pool.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Finn disrupts Magic Man's transmutation process, transferring his magic to Betty and leaving him a normie. It also relieves him of his sadness and insanity.
  • Call-Back:
    • Glob's helmet crashes down to Ooo episodes after he sacrificed himself back in "Astral Plane".
    • During "Jake the Brick", Betty was researching a paper that said "M + M + S", (Magic + Madness + Sadness) with a triple Venn Diagram.
    • The Tiny Manticore that was released back in "Sons of Mars" is back bottled up in Magic Man's house again.
    • GOLB was seen in "Puhoy" when Finn died and went back to his world.
    • Magic Man wants to use Glob's helmet to power the portal to Mars, also seen in "Sons of Mars".
  • Continuity Nod: Among the wizards Betty interviewed for her research are Huntress Wizard, Abracadaniel, the Naked Wizard, and Ron James.
  • Deader than Dead: Magic Man's wife Margles. He couldn't find her anywhere in the afterlife, and not even the magic of Prismo could bring her back to life, when he tried all he could conjure was a ball hoop and waster paper basket.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: During the scene of Betty interviewing Ron James, the latter is depressed until he douses himself with a potion to send himself into a state of manic euphoria, not unlike someone self-medicating for depression with recreational drugs or alcohol.
  • Forced Transformation: Magic Man swiftly defeats Finn and Jake by turning them into an egg and a bowl of porridge, respectively. However, Finn eventually wills himself into motion, and ends up getting baked into a bread version of himself.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Magic Man contrived a way to name his planetary defense program after his Lost Lenore, Margles. Glob calls him out on it.
  • Intelligible Unintelligible: The Manticore is able to understand Bread Finn, even though his speech sounds like "Me mo mu".
  • Irony: Betty wanted to save Simon from his madness and ended up going mad herself.
  • Journey to the Center of the Mind: During the transmutation ritual, Betty explores Magic Man's mind.
  • Living Weapon: M.A.R.G.L.E.S. is a sentient planetary defense system that Magic Man created from his nightmares.
  • Never Found the Body: Lampshaded - "disappeared doesn't always mean dead".
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Finn goes through great lengths to save Betty from Magic Man, but his interference results in Betty gaining Magic Man's powers and insanity.
  • Philosopher's Stone: Betty comments that it's her pure human blood that acts as a "Sorcerer's Stone" to allow the transmutation ritual.
  • Pieces of God: Glob's helmet.
  • Power Born of Madness: Betty's research reveals that many magic users suffer from Magic, Madness, and Sadness, but she's not sure if their magic makes them crazy or if being crazy is what allows them to use magic. When she gains Magic Man's powers, she inherits his insanity as well.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Magic Man created M.A.R.G.L.E.S. in the form of his dead wife, Margles, after trying so hard to bring her back to life. He tries to reason with her to live with him, but M.A.R.G.L.E.S. only wants to do what she was created to do. Glob winces when he sees her, because he knows it's a sign Magic Man is unwell.
  • Resolved Noodle Incident: In "Sons of Mars", Abe Lincoln mentions Magic Man "used to be cool" before something happened with him and Margles on Olympus Mons. In this episode we see that something play out.
  • Shout-Out:
    • M.A.R.G.L.E.S. has the same two horns, fire spout, and arm position as Baphomet.
    • Magic Man's Ascension Device resembles the one from The Holy Mountain.
    • The Philosopher’s Stone is made of people, like on Fullmetal Alchemist.
    • Simon, saying something crucial to his former lover, but the sound is muted, similarly to Gendou’s mysterious silenced lines in End of Evangelion.
      • There's also Magic Man using a "soulless", monstrous copy of his dead wife (who he still hopes will love him and is prepared to let all of Mars be destroyed if that's true) to fight off a Cosmic Horror. Glob's disgust when he/they say "Dude, did you have to make her look like your wife" sort-of sounds like a Dude, She's Like in a Coma, which is also a reference to Evangelion.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: The Tiny Manticore is back in Magic Man's house because in his own words, "was given some kind of hostage syndrome". He breaks out of when Finn gives him an inspiring (albeit unintelligible) speech.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Glob is very apprehensive of Magic Man's magical defense program being compromised by his desire to have Margles back, especially after seeing him model it completely after her.
  • Title Drop: Upon gaining Magic Man's powers, Betty has a vision of Simon silently telling her "You forgot your floaties", symbolizing how she went too deep in her quest and paid the price.
  • Troubled Backstory Flashback: During the transmutation, Betty enters Magic Man's mind and delves into his past, finding a flashback about the loss of his wife.
  • Wishful Projection: Magic Man created M.A.R.G.L.E.S. in the image of his wife and gets second thought at posting her to defend Mars. He tries to plead with her to come back and live with him, but all she wants is to fulfill her purpose. When he presses the issue she reminds him he didn't model her from a loving memory but the nightmares of his grief before attacking him.
  • You Monster!: The Manticore calls Magic Man this when he sees what he did to Finn and Jake.
