    In General
  • The entire premise of the franchise: you have to defend yourself from some murderous but ridiculously cute animal robots. It's hard to take it seriously. At first at least.
  • The entire fandom can provoke this, from the memes to much of the fanart. "Senpai security guard", anyone?
  • The jumpscares go in the following reaction as a person plays a FNAF game: Pure terror, genuinely unsettling, normal scary, neutral, annoying, frustrating and finally rage-inducing as the scary part goes out the window in favor of anger at the later, more difficult nights.

    Games

Five Nights at Freddy's 3:

  • Similarly to Golden Freddy in the first two games, Shadow Freddy can randomly appear in your office, but this time, he's off to the side and does nothing at all, appearing to be just as inactive as the other parts around the building.
  • Phantom Freddy has a habit of appearing through the window and just hobbling slowly to the door. Made even more amusing by the fact that if you open up the cameras or the computer, you will soon only be able to see a tiny bit of him out of the corner of your eye.

Five Nights at Freddy's World:

  • The "Hanging Mangle" image is a lot less disturbing when you realize the "noose" has no loop or knot, and Mangle doesn't appear to have a broken neck. That, and, of course, robots don't even breathe... And upon closer inspection, it looks like the ball from the paddle ball is in its mouth.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location:

  • Funtime Freddy's and Funtime Foxy's jumpscares are pretty terrifying... until you realize that the faceplates clip through their ears, meaning that the jumpscares in question are utterly impossible to do.
  • Ennard's jumpscare once it acquires its mask is pretty terrifying. But before that, you're treated to a conglomeration of metal and eyeballs with teeth giving you what looks like a dopey smile.
    • Speaking of the mask, the combination of its open mouth and half-lowered eyelid can make it look it's either drunk or asleep outside of said jumpscare.
  • The Good Ending has you sitting back at home and watching TV. Ennard then hobbles in, slowly shuffling towards you in a hilariously stilted way. Either it's still trying to kill you, or it just wants popcorn.

Ultimate Custom Night:

  • The sheer clusterfuck that can become a run when most if not all the animatronics are turned on can be hard to take seriously due to how crazy it can get.
  • Golden Freddy's jumpscare is a mixture between his FNaF1 jumpscare and his FNaF2 jumpscare. Sounds terrifying? Not really. It feels like how it is: a still PNG of Golden Freddy's head with the FNaF2 jumpscare noise accompanying it. It barely even feels like a jumpscare, which is rather funny considering this is the very animatronic who set up this whole nightmare against the poor security guard.
  • Many of the animatronics have silly voice lines after their jumpscares that can really help alleviate the nightmare factor. Not all mind you, the creepier ones have lines that probably make them worse.
  • Less one about being silly more than just being cute. The Puppet has a very creepy design...until you hear her voice, which is that of a little girl. Many viewers, rather than hearing a Creepy Child just thought "awwwwwwww".

Five Nights At Freddys VR Help Wanted:

Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach:

  • Since the child disappearances are barely discussed and Vanny lacks a lot of her intended threat factor, at times she just comes off as a weird Genki Girl furry who spends her night shift playing pretend instead of doing her job. It's almost cute.
  • Vanessa's Jump Scare when she catches you where she angrily stares at you while shining her light in your eyes. Vanessa's design lacks the Uncanny Valley factor that the animatronics have (and it doesn't help that she's a fairly attractive woman), which leads to this scare falling flat on its face.
  • Using the debug tools, it's possible to view the characters' jumpscares in third person, which makes them not very scary, with the characters apparently grabbing thin air and shaking their head around in an entirely non-threatening way.
  • Monty's grunts and roars in the Ruin DLC just sound like someone trying to make a goofy impression of an angry dog, undercutting his new creepier Ruined design.

    Literature

Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes:

  • Nothing ruins the scariness and horror of the animatronics quite like the realization that none of them score a single kill in the entire book. Every character who dies is done in by another human. Considering that the games ran on Humans Are the Real Monsters until Sister Location, it's somewhat justified.
