Refused is a massively influential Post-Hardcore/Hardcore Punk/whatever they feel like band from Sweden. They’re best known for their 1998 album The Shape of Punk to Come and its lead (and sole) single "New Noise".
They also contributed music to Cyberpunk 2077 as the In-Universe band SAMURAI, lead by Keanu Reeves' character, Johnny Silverhand.
CAN I TROPE?
- Alternative Metal: A clear influence, due to the staccato-like rhythm guitars, experimentation and blasting metallic distortion.
- Anarchy Is Chaos: Averted, albeit lyrically. They’re committed anarcho-communists.
- Animal Lover: One of the band's rare songs in Swedish, "Jag Äter Inte Mina Vänner" (I don't eat my friends) proclaims the band's Vegan ethos, declaring animals to be people too.
- Capitalism Is Bad: 90% of the band's lyrics are devoted to attacking capitalism and the government.
- Darker and Edgier: This Just Might Be... the Truth was a pretty standard 90s hardcore punk album. Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent saw the band adopt a harder, metal-influenced sound with frontman Dennis Lyxzén adopting his signature screamed vocal style.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: Their early material was fairly straightforward-sounding hardcore with little of the experimental twists to come demonstrated.
- Metal Scream: Dennis is a HUGE Type 3.
- New Sound Album: The Shape of Punk to Come has a very eclectic sound, combining elements of electronic music, and true to its name, being a Trope Maker for a lot of 2000's post-hardcore.
- Post-Hardcore: One of the most acclaimed examples of the genre, and most a fellow Trope Codifier alongside Fugazi.
