"I often find the smaller, independent films are much more rewarding than the bigger stuff, but you do the bigger stuff because it's a business, and you've got to show your face a bit, get yourself around."

Tropes & Trivia in his works:
- Fake American: In King Kong (2005), Flags of Our Fathers, Fantastic Four (2015), and the music video for "Wake Me Up When September Ends".
- Fake Scot: Sort of in The Eagle (2011), as he still uses his normal voice.
- Former Child Star: Defied in this speech.I wouldn't do a Macaulay. I have sensible people around me. I see this industry as a risky business. The money thing has always been in my control. I have always had people looking after it for me. I do love buying things—stupid gadgets. I'll say, "I want one of them." But I do the sensible thing, knuckle down, do some good work and keep a low profile.
- I Am Not Spock: Tried to avoid this in the years since Billy Elliot.
- Reality Subtext: Was bullied and teased for years over his dancing, making him perfect for Billy Elliot.
- Romance on the Set:
- Met Evan Rachel Wood while they were filming the music video for "Wake Me Up When September Ends". They eventually married and have a son together, but have since separated.
- He met Kate Mara while filming Fantastic Four (2015) and they started dating. They are married since 2017.
- Star-Making Role: His BAFTA-winning role in Billy Elliot put him on the map.
