The Hunters

A group of cannibals - called the Hunters in issue titles - who target Rick's group on their way to Washington D.C. Their attempts to eat them don't end well for them, and they are butchered by Rick, Michonne, Andrea, and Abraham.

  • Mugging the Monster: Ordinarily they specifically try to avert this, but end up playing it straight by targeting Rick's group out of desperation. It goes very, very poorly for them.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: The group usually sticks to loners and small groups to minimize their own risk; they normally would have left Rick's larger group alone, but at the time they hadn't eaten for days.
  • To the Pain: Rick and co. torture them to death after they admit they won't stop hunting them and that they ate their own children to survive.

     Chris

Chris

Debut: Issue 63

Chris is the leader of the Hunters.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: After it becomes clear that Rick's group have his people completely at their mercy. Unfortunately for him, he had just finished promising to keep on hunting Rick's group for food and is killed on the spot along with his friends.
  • Arc Villain: For Volume 11.
  • Affably Evil: He tries to be polite and apologetic to his victims.
  • Asshole Victim: Along with the rest of his group.
  • Death by Disfigurement: Only lasts a few minutes after his finger is shot off.
  • Evil Counterpart: He and his entire group are this to Rick's group.
  • Fingore: Andrea shoots his right index finger to prove he and his group are surrounded.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: How the deaths of him and his group are depicted.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: He and his group turned to cannibalism once they ran out of food. They began with their children.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Notes that they're only doing this in order to survive, and that under normal circumstances they wouldn't have messed with Rick's group since they normally only go after smaller groups or people traveling alone.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Zigzagged. When he sees that Rick has come (seemingly) alone to negotiate with them, he agrees to a civil conversation and orders Greg to lower his weapon, and he makes a genuine attempt to explain his actions to Rick. However, he also admits that his people are still going to try and hunt Rick's group down anyway, which seals his group's fate once Rick realizes that further negotiation is pointless.
  • Start of Darkness: After eating their children he admits hunting strangers is easier to do and accept.
  • Tears of Remorse: Over eating the children of their group. Even when he gives his pragmatic reasons that a bear will eat its cubs so it can make other it's clear he can't help himself but cry over it.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He allows his entire group to cook and eat Dale's leg without checking him for bites or even wondering why he was alone in the first place. Unfortunately, the whole group is wiped out before they find out if they have become infected or not.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He acts calm and polite when he is in firm control of the situation but when Dale reveals that his group ate his infected leg and Rick reveals that he has their group completely surrounded he responds in malicious anger and, in the latter case, desperate begging.
  • Villain Respect: Openly admits that Rick is brave for coming to negotiate with his group (although at the time he mistakenly thinks that Rick has come alone).
  • Would Hurt a Child: Had his group eat their own children when they ran out of food.

     Greg

Greg

Debut: Issue 61

Greg is a member of the Hunters.

     Charlie

Charlie

Debut: Issue 61

Charlie is a member of the Hunters.

  • Co-Dragons: With Greg
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Same as the other members of his group.
  • In the Hood: Wears a hoodie to cover his head during his first few appearances.
  • No Name Given: He is the only Hunter whose name is never mentioned. It was later revealed on the official website.

     Theresa

Theresa

Debut: Issue 63

Theresa is the sole female member of the Hunters.

     Albert

Albert

Debut: Issue 63

Albert is a member of the Hunters.

  • I'm a Humanitarian: Like the rest of his group.
  • Not Using the "Z" Word: When talking about zombies he uses the word "Deadie" to refer to them.
  • Perma-Stubble: He has one.
  • Tongue Trauma: He threatens to cut out his own tongue when Dale reveals his infection but is quickly talked out of doing so by Chris, who points out that he'd have to cut out his stomach for it to do any good.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He thinks cutting out his tongue will somehow stop a potential infection from spreading after he ingests a large amount of "tainted meat" that came from a bitten Dale. Granted, he was most likely just panicking.

     David

David

Debut: Issue 63

David is a member of the Hunters.

  • I'm a Humanitarian: Unsurprisingly.
  • Nerves of Steel: He is the only one who is completely unfazed at learning that he was eating the meat of a bitten person, reasoning that any infection would have been killed as the meat was thoroughly cooked. He does show some surprise at Chris getting his finger blown off but not as much as the Hunter right next to him who covers his mouth in shock.
  • The Stoic: He's the one Hunter that remains calm after the group learns Dale had been bitten before the Hunters chopped off his remaining leg and ate it. He reasons that since they cooked the meat, chances are any disease likely would have been killed. It becomes moot when the whole group is slaughtered, so the reader never finds out if he was correct or not.
