Kids

    Shizuka Kuze

Voiced by: Reina Ueda (vomic)

A lonely girl accompanied by her dog Chappy. Once Takopi meets her, his goal is to make her happy, but finding out how to do so isn't easy.

  • Driven to Suicide: After her dog Chappy was taken away, she's filled with such despair that she hangs herself with the Patch-It-Up Ribbon in one timeline.
  • Religious Russian Roulette: Shizuka confesses to Takopi that she wished on a star for her parents to stay together. When the divorce happened anyway, she lost faith in both magic and God.
  • Sanity Slippage: Shizuka's desperation to get Chappy back and see her father leads to a downward spiral of manipulation and spur-of-the-moment plans, culminating in an incident where she kidnaps her dad's other kids, thinking them impostors.
  • Tender Tomboyishness, Foul Femininity: Zig-zagged. She starts out as the Tender Tomboy to Marina's Foul Femme: she wears plain clothes and has unkempt hair while being lonely, in need of companionship, and the target of bullying. However, her behavior in the the timeline where Marina dies has her slowly start losing her sanity until she completely breaks at the end. In the final timeline, both she and Marina are much better adjusted and become friends.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behaviour: She jumps off the slippery slope once Chappy is taken away.
    • She takes advantage of Azuma's love for her in order to dispose of Marina's corpse. When the body is found, she forces him to take the blame and turn himself, as a way of proving his love for her.
    • She ends up kidnapping the two girls her father was raising because she thinks they might have eaten Chappy due to her Sanity Slippage.
    • She beats Takopi with a rock twice because he stood up to her.
  • When She Smiles: She's constantly depicted with a sad expression, but the one time she gives a heartfelt, genuine smile is when she regains her will to live. It's portrayed as an unsettling moment in the timeline where Marina had to die to make that happen, but it's much more positive in the final timeline where she and Marina become friends.

    Marina Kirarazaka
Voiced by: Honoka Kuroki (vomic)

A seemingly well-off kid that often bullies Shizuka with her Girl Posse. In actuality, she's a Troubled Abuser with her own problems that she's not willing to let anyone know.

  • Asshole Victim: Ends up getting murdered by the Happy Camera falling on her head. She gets better, but still...
  • Bully Turned Buddy: With his help, Takopi eventually ends up causing Shizuka and Marina to become friends.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Steals Shizuka's dog out of spite. In the original timeline, Shizuka ends up stealing Azuma (whom Marina was dating) as payback.
    • Treats Shizuka as an outcast. In the original timeline she's treated as an outcast due to her scarred face.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Marina's parents' toxic marriage goes down The Chain of Harm to her. As her mother instills the belief that her father's sessions with Shizuka's mother are the reason behind his abusive attitude towards her, Marina bullies Shizuka, the only connection she has any power over.
  • Scars Are Forever: In the original timeline she has a scar on her face due to her mother attacking her with a broken glass.
  • Tender Tomboyishness, Foul Femininity: Zig-zagged. With her long, styled hair and trendy clothes, along with her haughty Girl Posse and bully behavior, she is initially framed as the Foul Femme to her victim Shizuka's Tender Tomboy. However, the manga treats her home life sympathetically around the same time Shizuka's own negative qualities become more prominent, and the pair become friends in the final timeline after retaining some memories from the Flash Sideways.
  • Trauma Button: In the original timeline, Marina hates looking at glass because it reminds her of the time her mother attacked her with a broken drinking glass. Seeing her mom point a broken bottle at her face makes her start sobbing, and when her mom tries to attack her again, it causes her to lash out and kill her.
  • Troubled Abuser: While we only gets hints of her troubled home life from Shizuka's point of view, Takopi's friendship with Marina in the original timeline reveals the reasons behind her bullying.

    Naoki Azuma
A classmate of Shizuka and Marina, known for his good grades. He ends up falling in with Shizuka's plan to find Chappy.
  • The B Grade: He does well in school, but his grades always stopping short of a perfect score puts him at odds with his mother. Their relationship gets worse after his grades slip, with her stating to his face that she's all but disowning him.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Marina falls in love with him in the original timeline because he was the one who treated her well despite her scarred face.
  • Break the Cutie: He starts out as a well-meaning classmate, butover the course of the manga becomes more desperate and miserable.
  • Always Second Best: His brother gets perfect grades, is more popular and more beloved than him, and has their mother's favor, causing Azuma to feel like he'll never measure up no matter how good his grades get.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: Due to being deprived of affection for so long, Azuma is willing to latch on to anyone who gives him any sort of positive interaction. While this typically meant keeping up good grades to finally obtain love from his mother, it slowly turned into him becoming a Love Martyr when he grows to believe that going through with Shizuka's plans are the only way she'll stay friends with him.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Sees Shizuka as this. Ironically, he's this for Marina in the original timeline, when they dated until he left her for Shizuka.
  • Love Martyr: Shizuka used the love he had for her to lure him into disposing Marina's corpse. When the body is found, she convinces him to turn himself in.
  • Only Sane Man: Is quite surprised and stressed by Takopi's antics.
  • Secret-Keeper: When Marina dies, Azuma helps Shizuka bury her and feign ignorance of the event.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In the original timeline, he was dating Marina until he left her for Shizuka. This resulten in a horrific chain of events leading to the death of Marina's mother, and Takopi's decision to travel to the past and kill Shizuka.

    Takopi

Voiced by: Kurumi Mamiya (vomic)

A Happian who came to Earth to try and spread happiness.

  • Genre Refugee: With his adorable looks, cutesy nickname and verbal tic, and drive to make kids happy with Doraemon-style gadgets, Takopi could be mistaken for a Kodomomuke or Edutainment character. His simple worldview clashes with the serious, down-to-earth drama he landed in, and the kids he befriends have deeper-rooted problems that he he can't solve easily.
  • Innocent Means Naïve: Takopi is a Happian, an Innocent Alien from a planet where all the inhabitants generally get along (with some rules) and he's taught to help others. However, his childlike innocence means he's not accustomed to the more complex morality of Earth, and he's unaware of what concepts like murder are. This proves to be a problem, as he resolves to help a Bad Future version of Marina be happy by killing Shizuka in the past, despite not knowing the full weight of what this means.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Chapter 12 reveals that Takopi came to Earth in 2022, and after coming to understand Marina and her problems, believes the only way he can help her be happy is by killing Shizuka. When he went back home to use the Big Happy Clock, his mother took his memories for breaking their planet's law.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: Shizuka calls him Takopi as a portmanteau of his most standout traits: his species resembling an octopus (or tako), and his "-pi" Verbal Tic.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His real name is actually Nnu-anu-kf, as he reveals when he first meets Shizuka. Shizuka finds it too hard to pronounce, so she settles on calling him Takopi, which sticks for the rest of the manga.

Adults

    In General
  • Adults Are Useless: None of the Adults in the setting are able to truly help the kids, and in come cases are the reason why they've ended up as miserable as they were.
  • Abusive Parents: Marina's mother both physically and emotionally abuses her, while Azuma's mother emotionally deprives him.

    Shizuka's mother
Shizuka's single mother. She's often at work, so Shizuka doesn't spend a lot of time with her.
  • Struggling Single Mother: After the divorce, she's at work for most of the day to help Shizuka and Chappy. Their current home is in squalor.

    Shizuka's father
Shizuka's father, whom divorced his mother when Shizuka was young. Finding him again and getting Chappy back forms Shizuka's main goal during the series.
  • Secret Other Family: When Shizuka finally finds him, it turns out he's been raising an entire other family, complete with two kids, after he left. He never tells the kids who she is when they ask about her, and Shizuka is in such disbelief that she thinks the children are imposters.

    Marina's mother
Marina's abusive mother. While she has more time with her daughter due to staying at home, their relationship is severely strained.
  • Asshole Victim: In the original 2022 timeline, Marina kills her when she's about to attack her again.
  • Blame the Paramour: She blames Shizuka's mother for her marriage going south, as her husband cheats on her through using her services. This has caused Marina to in turn hate Shizuka by proxy.
  • Troubled Abuser: She often guilt trips Marina and has physically lashed out at her during breakdowns, but she herself had been abused by her husband.

    Marina's father
Marina's abusive father. He blows his money on gambling and prostitution, and is in a crumbling marriage with his wife.

    Azuma's mother

  • Education Mama: She puts a lot of stake into her sons' education, to the point of bribing her younger son with love to do better. This has resulted in Azuma becoming The Unfavorite for her, as his brother is able to get perfect grades while he cannot.

    Happy Mama
Takopi's, as well as all other Happians', mother. She is also in charge of the planet they live on.
  • Large and in Charge: Happy Mama is the largest Happian on the planet, only visible by her long tentacles. She's also the mother and leader of the the other inhabitants.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She's only seen in Takopi's flashback to his home planet, but she's responsible for the laws he and other Happians abide by and was responsible for wiping Takopi's memories for breaking the rules.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: She's too big to see, so her gender is indicated by a tiny bow on one of her tentacles.

Others

    Chappy
Shizuka's dog.
  • Canine Companion: In the early chapters, he and Shizuka were inseparable. Marina had to get him sent away in order to finally split them up.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He gets taken away early into the series, and while Shizuka believes he was sent to her father's house, he's not there when she finally makes it, leaving his fate unknown.
