Hatred sputters eventually, but righteous anger is eternal.

In a world of magic and monsters, it's hard not to find moments that show exactly what kind of adventures a few meddlesome youths can get into.

The Meddlesome Youths

  • Apparently, James was able to create his very own Highly Refined Transformation Spell. Everyone who knows about it is instantly impressed by his ability to completely change his gender with this spell.

  • The opening ceremony for the freshman students of the AAAM. Fafgander the dragon rises into the sky and lights it up with fire. The gargoyles below follow suite, and breathe fire up into the air as well. Then the faculty appears before the students, and dean Gernderf Dermberder shows up in a blaze of magical flame.

  • James standing up for Margot in front of Professor Evelina, demanding that she be allowed to use her gauntlet. Evelina writes it off as naive gallantry, but it's only the start of James' desire for Margot to be treated better.

  • When James is kidnapped by two goblins and a boggart, it's Margot d'Francane who comes to the rescue while riding atop her self-driving chariot. First, she grabs one goblin by the head, and sends it flying into the air before going off in a fiery explosion. Then she fires red electricity at the boggart, which wrap around it like snakes and burn it to nothing. For the last goblin, she lets it run for a bit before firing a blast that vaporizes his entire torso!

  • Professor Schwaa telling James that he will gladly bend his oaths to the school if it means supporting him. And sure enough, he does, as demonstrated below.

  • James making it his mission to solve the mystery of the disappeared students, with his friends offering active support.

  • Fafgander swooping in to save James and Ivan from their fall off the now living Flying Carpet.

  • The gang managing to capture the hobgoblin for the first time by having Ivan summon a gale to knock her down, followed by Gretchen melting the stone floor tiles into a small prison cage, with some of the stone forming a collar to keep her imprisoned.
    • In keeping with the trickster nature of the fair folk, the hobgoblin manages to fool them into letting her go while she keeps the contents of the satchel she stole. She gave back the satchel, but she never said anything about giving what was inside to them.
    • Even then, Gretchen got the last laugh by cursing her to never be able to leave the castle unless the witch allowed it.

  • After putting up with Professor Evelina's abuse for the upteenth time, Margot silently decides to completely show her up with her skills, gauntlet included. She starts by cutting off one of her insults with a huge jet of flame that stops just in front of her face. Then she proceeds to summon a flurry of multi-colored whips of fire that dance around the room like serpents. James is quick to notice that she's doing all of this with the most minimal of effort. After she makes it all go away in a flash, she slowly proceeds to lower all of her armored fingers except for the middle one in front of the stunned professor with a look of absolute hatred before she leaves. And by leaves, we mean she reduces the door to sparks before storming away.
Evelina: James Chaucer, if you dare-
    James: Don't care.
    • All of this is immediately followed by James leaving as well to support her. Then Polybeus leads a whole walk-out with the other students, though his reasoning most likely came from wanting to impress James. Much later, one of the students confesses that while some of them did it to get out of class early, they eventually realized that they too were angry at Evelina's treatment of Margot.

  • Fairyland. Here, the rules of time and space are mere suggestions, the flora and fauna is every bit as fantastical as it can be, and there is no sun but a shifting Alien Sky full of color. And keep in mind, this is where The Fair Folk call home.

  • Oomlowt is horrified and disgusted upon hearing about Professor Evelina's treatment of Margot. He immediately takes it up with the dean, with Evelina, James, and Margot present. The speech he gives to Dermberder is worth noting:
Evelina: You know nothing of this, wyrm. Your kind has no sorcerers.
Oomlowt: But I am fae. And people in Fairyland come in all different sizes, quite literally speaking! We do not design our doors in one size alone - we make them shift with a stroke, or nest doors between doors, or leave foods that help others shrink or grow to fit just outside the doorway. Is it more work than making a single door? Yes, certainly, but it makes everyone welcome, and helps us all work together! That is how it must be here! We have students from every corner of Midgaheim, sorcerers, conjurer, and fairies alike! Students with different skillsets, talents, and needs! What kind of school are we running if we only cater to a select few?
    (Turns gaze to Dermberder)
What kind of school do you want this to be?

  • Later after the above, when Evelina and Oomlowt both complain about his solution (let Margot keep the gauntlet but have her grade deducted by 10%), Dermberder causes all of the lights to go out in his office, and lets them know EXACTLY why he's the dean around here, yelling a Badass Boast at them in a deep voice while floating in the air and being surrounded by red light.
Dermberder: DO YOU DARE QUESTION MY JUDGEMENT? I AM GERNDERF DERMBERDER, DEAN OF THE ACADEMY OF APPLIED ARCANA AND MAGIC! MY VISION IS PURE, MY KNOWLEDGE PARAMOUNT! I AM A MASTER OF THE MYSTIC ARTS, AND YOU WILL ABIDE BY MY WORDS! OBEY ME, OR FACE MY WRATH!

  • According to Margot, the kidnapped student plot isn't the first kidnapping she's foiled.
Margot: My village used to have a bandit problem. (Flexes her gauntlet hand.) Used to.

  • When the hobgoblin shows up again, the gang pulls no punches getting her captured once more. At first, the little beast is always a step ahead, dodging fireballs and hopping alongside the summoned gales. Then Gretchen blocks off the exit with a stone wall, and Rodrigo uses illusion magic to summon more walls. James finishes it off by blasting her into one of the walls with water magic.
    • Later, James beating the hobgoblin at her own game by saying that she can go free after giving back the satchel's contents, but he never says when before she coughs up answers.

  • Serena revealing that she was able to deduce exactly what the other youths were trying to investigate based on some scant clues. As her surprising penchant for intelligence demonstrates, she's the perfect candidate for the high priestess role in James' entourage.

  • The Celebration Central floor that the Samhain festival takes place in has a whole night sky contained in it thanks to illusion magic. Admit it, you'd like to dance there too.

  • One of the members of the Claw Gang (later revealed to be Shere Statchel in the next story) declaring that she'll tear Fairyland apart if it means getting her friend back.

  • When the elven soldiers have our heroes confronted, it seems rather dire at first. Then Serena starts to giggle, and whips out a locket that transforms into an impressive scepter. She then launches into a dazzling Transformation Sequence and Badass Boast that solidifies who she is: A massive homage to the Magical Girl archetype.
Serena: Fiends of villainy, quake in fear! I am the lady of justice, the soldier of beauty, and the high priestess of virtue! I am Serena Takeuchi, and for the honor of this school, I shall sunder you!
    • What follows is a total Curb-Stomp Battle on her part. She first rains down shards of crystals with her Prism Shard Barrage, which causes those hit to sprout crystals and become petrified. Once everyone starts running, she keeps up the assault while Margot joins in with her fireballs. Actually, she ends up getting a little TOO enthusiastic, gleefully burning several elves to nothing.
    • Then a high-ranking orc named Urgnak the Untouchable shows up in armor that actually manages to deflect her fire attacks. Her solution. Deliver a supreme Megaton Punch with her gauntlet, smashing his tusks with just two blows. She then digs her claws into his throat, incinerating him from the inside-out.

  • The moment the elf general confronts the youths with an army of kelpies, Serena summons a barrier of crystal. And when that starts showing signs of being brought down...a roar echoes through the woods, causing the kelpies to retreat. Then, all of the sudden, Fafgander shows up alongside Ivan's homicidal flying carpet to blast at the malevolent forces with pure dragon fire while the carpet sucks the life force out of any unfortunate elves. He also snatches up the general and tosses him into the forest. It's such an awesome moment that it has its very own illustration, "Rescued by dragonfire", courtesy of Alex Gayhart of All Your Ruins fame.

  • While at Fafgander's lair, Serena and Charlotte use a combination of their magic to bring everyone their stuff. The former uses her scepter while the latter manipulates the invisible threads of the web her kind look to.

  • Margot blowing up the archway that enables the Summer Prince to kidnap students, followed by Gretchen, Serena, and Rodrigo constructing a new one to replace it.

  • When the elves chase the youths into the Phlegmatic feast hall, Childe shows the beings exactly what happens when someone messes with her students. She controls the entire kitchen to fight them, using an array of sharp knives and scalding cooking oil to wreck them.
Childe: This is my feast hall, you brutes! No one harms my kids!

  • The gang ends up running into Polybeus, still wanting that duel. However, once he's made aware of the marauding elves, he turns on a dime, whips out a short-bladed sword, and proceeds to attack the invaders with lightning magic.

  • Upon entering the textile room, Ivan gets his own chance to shine, and causes all of the carpets to come to life and attack the elves en masse. Even Gretchen thinks that was brutal. Though it does become a minor problem for anyone else in the castle, considering how vicious his carpets are.

  • Charlotte opening a portal to Fairyland using the web, followed by the youths declaring that they're not afraid to die trying to save the students.

  • Mr. Mackers rising from his bog to confront the elven general and his forces when they attack the youths in Fairyland. After the general threatens him, the nuckelavee proceeds to bite into his chest, ripping him to pieces before unleashing his mortasheen disease onto the rest of the soldiers by having his horse head blast it at them as a Breath Weapon.

  • The battle with Margot, Serena, and Polybeus against the orc army is one awesome moment after another.
    • Margot's able to hold her own for the most part, sending fireballs and tendrils of magic at the orcs as they try to dogpile her.
    • Serena rescuing Polybeus from the orc army.
    • When an army of pixies and sylphs are sent after Serena and Polybeus, the former launches a Combination Attack she calls THUNDER! PRISM! STRIKE! She summons a barrier of crystals, and has Polybeus shoot a huge thunderbolt at it, causing it to bounce between the crystals and spread throughout the sky, striking almost every flying fairy there.
    • Once the orc assault becomes too much, Margot's magic breaks loose. It begins sucking up all of the latent magic in Fairyland, and turns into a gigantic tempest full of red/black fire magic, disintegrating everything that gets caught in it. Just before it can obliterate anything more, Margot yells at it to go back in its cage like it was a sapient force, and it does.
      • After she's rendered too exhausted to fight, the orcs recognize her as a warrior fighting a great beast (her magic), and promptly spare everyone. To them, she's no orc, but she has an orc's honor, and she ends up inspiring them to betray their cruel master, leaving the elves at the mercy of the youths when they regroup.
    • Gretchen knocking one of the elf guards off the castle by manipulating the stones under his feet, followed by Ivan thrusting him into the ground with some gales.

  • The hobgoblin giving James directions to the Summer Prince's throne room as payback for the high elf being such a Bad Boss.

  • Rodrigo and Ivan finding the records room, and therefore, all documents relating to the stolen students. This becomes important later, as the AAAM can launch a rescue operation thanks to them.

  • Gretchen stealing a vast majority of the Summer Prince's treasure after tricking the guarding low elf into doing so.

  • James letting the Summer Prince know under no uncertain terms that he has evidence that he can show the ruling high elves to have the evildoer branded a criminal. For a moment, the prince's Smug Snake demeanor breaks. The youth even throws his "wot wot" Verbal Tic back at him.
    • The young wizard them makes a deal with the Prince, something that no fairy can reject. He must put an end to his kidnappings, not interfere in the lost students' rescue, and allow James and his friends to return unharmed.
    • And when the Prince declares that James must give him a part of himself as payback, after a moment of uncertainty, the boy figures out the PERFECT loophole...he'll give the prince his former name, Elizabeth Marlowe, and the identity that came with it. The Prince takes it away gleefully, but unbeknownst to him, it's a Meaningless Villain Victory, as James has been looking to get rid of that old identity for years. In other words, James may have not gotten everything he wanted, but he tricked a fairy royal nonetheless.

  • Oomlowt instantly coming to the youths' defense after all is said and done, telling the dean himself off for trying to punish the students who basically cleaned up a mess of his making. Combined with the stolen students telling him off, Dermberder can only reel back in embarassment and give them credit where it's due, even if he tries to blow it off as something he could have totally solved (no one falls for that).

  • The youths using a Combination Attack to send Lord Dhenregirr packing. James blasts him with water and into a hunk of stone summoned by Gretchen, Polybeus electrocutes him, Serena rains petrifying crystals onto him, and his imprissoned body is sent flying into the distance by Margot's fireball.

Tournament of Death

  • Professor Juno Panopte, Cool Teacher of legerdemain and Master of Illusion. One of her first acts is to trick everyone into thinking a dragon is busting through the class, and they all take the bait hook line and sinker. But more than that, her stance on James and company makes her a perfect Foil to Alys.

  • The Ultimate Wizard Battle tournament. Just the thought of magical beings going at it ensures that an entire book based around it is going to be awesome (and of course, fraught with peril).

  • When Gretchen derides the tournament as pointless violence, Polybeus is quick to retort with surprising eloquence, seeing conflict as the means of which meaning in life is obtained, and an antithesis to living in fear. Even Gretchen is impressed.
Polybeus: To live is to face peril, and to truly experience life, we must risk the dire unknown! Perhaps it is folly to choose danger without need, but if so, then I take the title of fool with pride!

  • The Creation Myth that Professor Tlancheb relays to the audience of the UWB. In the beginning, there was Kaos. Then the Gods slew it with light in the form of a blade, and brought order to the world. But Kaos didn't truly die, and what remained of it became the very magic that the wizards of old used to defy the Gods and reshape the world!

  • After Ivan is beaten almost instantly by Miguel, Polybeus scoffs that it was inevitable and the boy should have known better. James then calmly asks for his attention, and pins him against the lockers. Then, in a calm tone, he tells Polybeus that he's only a part of the group because of Ivan, a founding member. And if he can't stop treating him like trash, James will gladly cut ties with him. It causes Polybeus to have a major Jerkass Realization, and he drops the insults afterwards.

  • Margot vs. Shere Statchel
    • While Shere attempts to get her opponent with acid/poison attacks, Margot counters by dodging it all until her foe gets sloppy, then she comes in with a fireball, knocking the clawed wizard back. It isn't long before Shere can't face the fireball barrage anymore, and the win goes to Magrat.

  • Serena vs. Andreea Vacaputere
    • The fight is almost completely in Serena's favor, with her nimbly dodging Andreea's earth-powered punches and then encasing her limbs in crystal when she's in the middle of charging.

  • James vs. Herring Lordred-er, actually, Lord Dhenregirr
    • James actually requests the fight when Dhenregirr's exposed and disqualified. He wants to see what this lich is capable of, and to be fair, so do we.
    • The fight for one thing demonstrates that for all of Dhenregirr's comic ineptitude as a villain, he's still just as powerful as Dermberder claims him to be. Every water attack from James gets a No-Sell from him, and in return he electrocutes the boy by shocking the water. As he's doing this, he's melting rock into slag to make weapons and armor to give to his very own skeleton army.
    • From there, he and his skeletons have James on the ropes. However, he also encourages James to rely on more than just water magic, demanding that he experiment. The boy proves to be a quick learner until fire, which can't really be done well by a person who rarely feels anger. Dhenregirr refuses to let up, telling James that there is indeed a righteous anger in him, and only through that rage can he undo that which has wronged him. And it works, with James summoning a torrent of flame.
    • Afterwards, it's all or nothing, with Dhenregirr summoning almost every element at once to rip the arena apart and destroy James. The youth eventually figures out that he can't fight Dhenregirr in a straight battle, but after observing the lich gingerly tend to an injured skeleton warrior, he decides to exploit his Benevolent Boss tendencies by targeting the other skeletons. By the time Dhenregirr has got his little army to safety, he notices too late the flurry of elements coming at him, knocking him away and causing his skeletons to land on him. When James threatens to destroy them, that's when Dhenregirr surrenders.

  • Geoffrey Travers, despite seeming like a typical lazy older student, has a positively ENOURMOUS room that looks like the night sky for the most part, complete with the moon he worships. Turns out, he's just as adept at illusion magic as the faculty, and he lends his knowledge to James and Rodrigo to make their own places Bigger on the Inside.

  • Ivan creating the concept of sillylusions by making his doodles come to life and act out before everyone's very eyes. In other words, he may very well be the first cartoonist in Midgaheim. Rodrigo is certainly captivated by it all.

  • Margot vs. Sarkani Charmil
    • Sarkani begins by turning into a swarm of bats, only for Margot to strike every last one of them with an energy ball that divides into several projectiles. After being pushed into a corner by Margot's assault, the Ruslovakian summons a blade of fire to strike back. Margot summons one in return, and as their swords clash, she manages to slice off her opponent's arm.
    • Enraged, Sarkani uses her magic to create a huge dragon made of emerald fire. Undeterred, Margot allows her magic to run wild and assimilate the magical construct before raining onto her foe and exploding, taking the prideful wizard out.

  • Serena vs. Reese Crogallach
    • It's a Single-Stroke Battle, with Serena instantly imprisoning the cumbersome were-croc in crystal.

  • James vs. Richard Rainsford
    • After they agree to keep their elemental magic to a minimum in the name of good sport, James uses illusion magic to vanish from sight before ambushing Richard with a water geyser. Richard responds with a storm and a twister, but then that gets dispelled by a combo of fire and water magic.
    • Unfortunately, the mark of the saboteur prevents us from seeing the true outcome, as James has to forfeit before he can get hurt, much to Richard's disappointment.

  • After Alys callously derides the recently deceased Gabriev as deserving of his fate due to being a conjurer (rightfully shocking everyone in the class), Margot decides that enough is enough, and challenges the Sadist Teacher and her biggest enemy to a one-on-one duel. If Alys wins, Margots leaves the school. But if she wins, she can skip Sorcery Studies with full credit and expose the teacher for the pompous bitch she is. After Alys accepts, she leaves the room by blasting the door open.
    • Afterwards, Margot explains to James that it isn't just about her own righteous fury at Alys mistreatment of her, but for the sake of everyone who has and will be no doubt abused if the teacher doesn't get some sense literally knocked into her.

  • Margot vs. Alys Evelina. How does it end? Does the page image not tell you?
    • Throughout the fight, Margot remains completely stoic in spite of Alys' jabs. And from there, not a single move on the older sorcerer's part lands a hit on her. To name one example, Alys tries earth magic, but Margot counters by burning it all and turning it into a huge magma serpent that chases after her until it's spent too much energy.
    • But more importantly, the Frankish warrior's first move is to summon a pebble-sized orb of fire magic. Then, as the fight rages on, it grows and grows and grows until it's big enough to engulf the entire arena below it. This is Margot's new Signature Move, the Doomstar (as illustrated above). It's so powerful and immune to all counters that Alys is reduced to yielding, swallowing her pride for once.
    • The school's enchantment teacher, Professor Helmshmied, examines both Margot's gauntlet and her lichrot-ridden arm, and declares that there was no amplification on the gauntlet's part, only restraint. Basically, Margot won fair and square.
    • As every teacher and student comes down to praise Margot, Oomlowt takes the time to remind Alys that if she hadn't been so determined to maintain her prejudiced way of life, the Frankish girl could have been HER achievement. All Alys can do is stew away in her defeat.
    • Much later, we see Alys is a very changed woman, her initial vindictiveness and arrogance replaced by a stuttering, simpering wreck who Apologizes a Lot and constantly asks James if she's doing it all right. A fitting punishment for such a horrible person.

  • Margot vs. Chungo Maximo
    • Chungo is the only opponent so far who actually manages to land a hit on Margot by turning into a mouse, dodging her attacks, and then changing back again just in time to land an uppercut on her. Margot retaliates by summoning serpents made of fire to chase him around. Then they collide and merge into a large fire dragonet. Chungo then realizes that he doesn't have to be a mouse, and he turns into an alligator to swat the fire construct away.
    • Unfortunately, the cursed rune of the saboteur activates on Margot, and while her unstable magic counters it, it results in that magic being unleashed in full again, bursting out and forming a pillar of hellish magenta energy. As it gets worse, Chungo realizes that he's no longer the monster everyone fears, and rises to the occasion to give Margot words of encouragement. It works, and the girl is once again able to get a lid on her magic. Margot may have won, but Chungo Maximo the half-ogre was the hero of the hour.

  • Serena Takeuchi vs. Dolf Gunn
    • While Dolf DOES prove to be formidable with his fist-beard capable of firing bolts of energy, Serena counters this with flying colors by entrapping the energy in a crystal prison before amplifying her arsenal with it and sending it rocketing towards Dolf as the Ruby Riot Blaster. She nearly does it tenfold with the Ruby Riot Prism Strike before the other wizard surrenders.

  • Even after Miguel insults Polybeus on the battlefield during their match, the youth remembers the encouragement of James and Ivan, and actually puts the older wizard on the ropes for a while. It's only ended suddenly when the saboteur's curse activates.

  • After Polybeus is put in the hospital, James is about ready to throw in the towel due to how unsolvable the case is, as well as the damage him getting everyone involved has wrought. Serena and Margot, however, are ferociously against it, demanding that the fates of those who got hurt/killed be not in vain. The rest of the youths follow suite, and eventually, James regains his resolve too, albeit he doesn't truly recover until Rodrigo orchestrates events in his favor.

  • Margot vs. Eruz Tobael
    • Eruz actually manages the first hit with beams of energy from the large eye-shaped rings he summons. She responds by wrangling the beams and then tearing the floating energy eyes apart with her bare gauntlet, using the energy within to power her fireballs. She repeats this process a couple of times before Eruz can recover. When he retaliates with more energy eyes, she summons her Doomstar, lets her magic absorb the energy of the beams from the eyes, and funnels it into the Doomstar to crash into Eruz, winning the fight.

  • According to the commentators, Miguel's opponent, Aldonza Dulcinea, tamed a rampaging manticore that appeared during the Samhain Ball while the Youths were handling the kidnapping plot. She lives up to her reputation by dodging all of Miguel's attacks and causing his cool exterior to crack. It only stops when the saboteur's curse gets her, and even then she survives and concedes with grace.

  • Serena vs. Sadie Pineed
    • Sadie immediately reveals that she's been watching Serena's victories, enabling her to No-Sell her first attack. She then summons magical electric stingers to assault her opponent. Serena summons a Prism Palanquin to take the fight to the air, but the powerful pixie keeps pace.
    • Then Serena disappears, and before Sadie knows it, spires of crystal rise from the remnants of the ones used, and on each one is an illusionary Serena. As the pixie mindlessly attacks them, she unintentionally wrecks the spires an causes them to grow bigger, forming the Careless Crystal Cage around her, and then shattering with a Prism Shatter Strike, burying her in shards.
    • Undeterred, Sadie rises and smashes the palanquin Serena's riding on, sending her into freefall. In the nick of time, she unleashes a new move called Rainbow Prism Symphony, which surrounds both she and Sadie in crystal, all of which blasts the pixie with energy, causing her to fall to the ground encased in crystal and lose the match.

  • Charlotte allowing the threads of fate to guide her to not only where Polybeus is, but also where the saboteur is...or rather, where they both are.
    • Following this, her and Polybeus escaping Richard and Miguel via her jumping off the castle wall and crawling to safety.

  • The Youths work together to finally bring the saboteurs down, and it's glorious.
    • To deal with the imp planting curses on everyone, Ivan creates a sillylusion of a dancing cat in order to distract it while it's disguised as a rat. This enables Gretchen to summon a cage right below, allowing Maxeral to interrogate it later.
    • Then we have our main event: Margot and Serena vs. Richard and Miguel!
    • The teams split into Margot fighting Richard while Serena takes on Miguel. Richard tries to keep his gentleman facade until it becomes clear that the furious Margot knows of his crimes, hense her more intense attacks. Serena and Miguel, meanwhile, enage in vollying crystals and electricity at each other until the former starts charging up her arsenal with her foe's own magic. Miguel then realizes that Serena wasn't cursed, and is so dumbstruck that he ends up wide open for a strike.
    • Soon, Richard and Miguel try to step up their game, but it still isn't enough. After Miguel is blasted by Serena's Thunder Prism Strike, he unleashes a flurry of spells at her, putting her on the defensive but never actually hitting her. Richard, meanwhile, summons all kinds of wind/lightning magic at Margot, who counters it all with moves including grabbing the lightning bolts and using them like whips against her foe. Then she and Serena get the idea to lead Miguel to Richard, ensuring that his spell assault hits his partner instead.
    • Margot then imbues her magic into Serena's scepter, causing the perky girl to undergo a brand new transformation, complete with a more resplendent outfit. With a new move known as Dazzling Diamond Crystallization, she blasts a beam that encases Miguel in crystal with a frozen look of terror on his face.
    • Richard, elated by the prospect of having a Worthy Opponent, ambushes Margot, and seemingly blasts her head off with a lightning bolt. It turns out to be an illusion, and the real Margot clocks him in the face with her gauntlet, while Serena entraps him in crystal, forcing him to yield.
    • Dermberder then shows up to punish the saboteurs for their misdeeds. He decides that death is out of the equation...but a time out isn't. He then pulls out a small amulet, and imprisons the two villains in it, their silently screaming faces still visible.
    • To top things off, Margot and Serena decide to throw their most powerful spells (Doomstar and Dazzling Diamond Crystallization) at each other to decide who's the true champion of the UWB tournament. They do so, and are both brought down to exhaustion by the outcome. The very next page, and we find out the victor...Margot d'Francane.
