Adaptation Expansion / Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun
aka: Mairimashita Iruma Kun

Go To

Outside of the comedy, for the most part the story is pretty barebones in the manga. If a story detail doesn't directly contribute to either the plot or the comedy, it's mostly skipped over, to be elaborated on in a later chapter when necessary. The anime, on the other hand, has no reason to do this, and thus adds extra content to fill out episode run-time. For specific examples (with the chapters adapted being in parentheses):

    General
  • As a whole, the anime adaptation makes sure to also include everything from the end-of-volume omakes, which would normally only be seen through physically purchasing said volumes. Some of them are adapted into the SuKiMa shorts, while others are inserted into places of the episodes where they'd fit chronologically, along with expanding upon them.
  • Almost every episode includes a quick anime-original scene of the "school bell", which is actually a monster face attached to a tower that roars to the tune of a regular school bell. Come Season 2, it's started roaring in a singing tone and rhythm, with no two episodes having the same "bell" song.
  • Soi Purson, the unnoticed member of the Misfit Class, has more moments onscreen than he did in the manga before the reveal, though they still tend to be subtle or at least not commented on.
  • Each season has an anime-original pre-opening intro detailing the current status of Iruma's desires, each of which first appears in the second episode:
    • Season 1 notes how he's trying his best to avoid standing out due to his status as the only human in the demon world meaning that extra attention risks outing him and getting him eaten by demons.
    • Season 2 gives a quick sequence of Iruma running to Babyls with various forms of imagery around him, particularly him climbing the "stairs" up the ranks before ending up at the Demon King's Throne in Royal One, as a symbolic display of his newfound genuine ambition.
  • Starting from Season 2 Episode 12, when the first Opera/Kalego interaction happened, the anime has been including additional content that directly or indirectly references the Kalego Side Story prequel spinoff, mostly in interactions between those two but also when Balam interacts with either of them.

    • A very small scene is added where Iruma thinks over Ameri telling him to make up a dream for himself.
    • Another small scene is added where Ameri hides her manga and expresses relief that Azz and Clara didn't hear their reading session.
    • We get a scene involving Clara sleeping at home grumbling in jealousy over Ameri's interactions with Iruma. This scene also shows some of her family members long before they officially debut in the manga.
    • We also get a scene involving Azz fussing over the curiosity of why Iruma keeps interacting with the Student Council President.
    • The scene from Chapter 17 where Sabro advises Clara to seduce Iruma, which is a flashback, is moved to where it would've actually taken pace in the manga around Chapter 13.

    • Kuromu gets a full idol performance, with quick scenes of all her fans watching both in person and on a livestream, before she ends up noticing that Iruma is in the audience.
    • The SuKiMa short has Azz and Clara practicing cheering for Kuromu, with Clara getting Azz to join her by saying it might make Iruma happy.

  • Episode 22 (Ch.42 & 43):
    • We get some scenes involving the concert staff trying to deal with all the rowdy fans that came to see Kuromu perform.
    • We see the actual scene from the flashback in Chapter 44 of Ameri receiving a ticket to Kuromu's concert, followed by periodic scenes of her doing her best to enjoy her time there, with some of those scenes also involving her wondering why "Irumi" seems so familiar.
    • Kerori going to see Mal about the commotion is slightly extended to have her passing by the concert hall staff being amazed by the current performance.
    • Iruma & co. give some introductions for their idol character roles.
    • The song and dance routine by Iruma's gang & Kuromu is extended into a full-blown performance.
    • Following Iruma's chat with Mal, Kerori expresses concern that she helped Iruma stand out even more, even if he was cross-dressing as a disguise. She then gives him an autograph at his request.
    • The response to Iruma's gang as idols getting front page in the newspaper is extended, with Azz trying to keep Clara from revealing their identities out of fear it'll ruin his family reputation, and Kamui expressing surprise that, despite them being cute and beautiful, they didn't get a physical response out of him.
    • The SuKiMa short has Iruma having a hard time putting the female idol clothing on, but when he turns to Azz the latter has already put his on. Azz tries to deny that he's used to wearing clothes of this type, insisting that he was only familiar with them because he helps his mother.

  • Episode 23 (Ch.39):
    • The entire first half of the episode is completely anime original content, with several scenes inspired by, but not directly based on, content from the manga:
      • We start with a quick semi-recap, showing off the fact that Iruma has gotten completely used to his life in the netherworld.
      • We get an entire sequence detailing the morning of the school day, i.e. Iruma enjoying breakfast with his family, Azz and Clara having a competition as Foreshadowing for their cook-off later on, Dosanko getting a semi-romantic accidental encounter with Azz, and Kalego explaining why the class ends up being taught by Momonoki Morax.
      • We get a lesson involving Momonoki, with Clara reading an excerpt from a textbook, Jazz, Shax, and Garp watching a Kuromu video and praising her, which embarrasses the nearby Kerori, and Momonoki turning the boys into frogs for them disrupting the class, with Garp ending up held in Elizabeth's arms due to him being picked up by her before transforming, causing Kamui to feel envious, all of which hints at the eventual Transformation magic lesson she will teach. Following all that, Iruma compliments Kerori on her continued popularity, which she thanks him for.
      • We get some scenes of the students going through all their classes and enjoying their Battlers, with Eiko once again missing Iruma passing her due to being distracted.
      • We get yet another manga-reading session between Iruma and Ameri, with this session resulting in Ameri thinking about the fact that she saw an akudol that looks suspiciously like Iruma (because it was him), making her concerned about what kind of secrets Iruma is keeping.
      • The first half finishes off with Iruma walking home, taking a bath, having dinner, and then going to bed. It is at this point that Iruma finally realizes, with utter shock, the fact that he has become completely accustomed to living in the netherworld.
    • The second half of the episode starts with the trio walking to school, with Iruma thinking concernedly about the revelation he had the previous night involving getting used to the netherworld, with him wondering whether it really is a good idea for him to stay there. His worrying expression as he walks along silently causes concern for Azz and Clara, which results in them brainstorming up a way to cheer Iruma up, with Clara suggesting cooking him food, which leads into the whole situation where the two compete for who can make meal for Iruma that'll cheer him up the most.
    • The Valac family's "love-pouring dance" to fill Clara's food with love is changed into yet another musical number, with the actual dance happening at the end.
    • The episode closes out with Iruma thinking how glad he is to have come to the netherworld, since so many amazing things, from being adopted by a family that actually cares for him to meeting people he could genuinely call friends, happened because of it.
    • The second half of the credits shows everybody going about their days following everything that happened throughout the season, including a teaser for a later season by showing Kiriwo in prison.
    • The Stinger of the episode shows "evil cycle" Iruma, providing a Sequel Hook for what's to come in the next season.

Season 2

    Episodes 1 to 5
  • Episode 1 (Ch.44 & 45):
    • Several points in the episode give reviews, complete with flashbacks relevant to them, over major character details for Iruma, including his Extreme Doormat tendencies, need for his Ring of Gluttony to perform magic as a normal human, and desire to avoid standing out, each of which pop up when they're first re-mentioned.
    • The quick recap is expanded into a full-blown summarization of story details relevant to both the series overall and the season specifically, including Sullivan feeding the Ring of Gluttony his magic during breakfast to keep it from rampaging out of hunger, Iruma, Azz, and Clara having a friendly chat that devolves into the demon duo fighting over Iruma's adoration, a general recap laid over the school song about human-eating, a quick display of Iruma and co. helping out the school faculty, and Kalego aggressively stating his class rules and what the Misfit Class has to look forward to later in the school year.
    • The lead-up to everybody going for lunch is expanded to both show various students grabbing their food and have Azz & Clara more heavily contemplate which menu they're thinking of choosing from.
    • Dosanko gets a scene philosophizing about the darkness inherent in everybody after catching a glimpse of shadow-form Ali, to the confusion of her trio posse.
    • Ali coaching Iruma on transformation magic is slightly extended to also giving himself Sabro's torso-exposing outfit, including a comment from Ali about how Iruma needs more muscle to make it work.
    • The quick scene of Opera putting Iruma to bed out of worry that he's so tired he's hallucinating is extended to have Opera force Iruma into his bed and lull him to sleep with a quick and simple lullaby.
    • Eiko gets a scene with her dragon friend in the library where she's studying up on camera shooting, experiencing red-faced High-Pressure Emotion out of embarrassment since she plans to try shooting pics of Iruma and Ameri.
    • Shortly before the bed scene, Iruma, Sullivan, and Opera have dinner, during which the latter two express relief that Iruma looks to be feeling better after what they believed was him hallucinating due to him being unable to explain Ali to them without sounding crazy.
    • The SuKiMa short has Eiko putting into practice the camera-using skills she learned recently to take photos of Iruma and Ameri... but first she takes up a part-time job to earn money so she can buy a good camera in the first place.

  • Episode 2 (Ch.46, 47, & 48):
    • Ameri's "nightmare" about Iruma liking to crossdress adds a Sailor Moon-style Magical Girl Transformation Sequence for him putting on the outfit, temporary light-obscured nakedness included, before doing an additional cutesy pose while saying "tee-hee".
    • Ameri rushing to school after breakfast with her father on a videochat is expanded to show her eating and expressing distress about her dream, and Henri shows increasing anger at the realization she's thinking about Iruma, to the point of pulling a The Ring by changing his background to a well and making the video grainy like a poorly recorded tape, before crawling through the holographic screen in an attempt to physically stop her from seeing the boy.
    • Ameri being so lost in thought she ends up getting distracted from her presidential duties before Quichelight yells at her to bring her out of her head is altered and expanded to show her considering another manga scene while trying to reason out why Iruma was crossdressing, before bursting her own mental bubble out of confusion and noticing Quichelight was calling for her.
    • The scene of Ameri being so frazzled she mishears Quichelght saying "scouts" as "skirts" is extended to have her also mishear "filled with" as "frills" and "flustered" as "fluff".
    • Azz and Clara get a scene showing them wondering why Iruma hasn't returned to them yet, before members of the student council come to forcibly reassign them to the new Battler's Ameri mentioned in her explanation to Iruma about how she's making him temporarily join the student council.
    • Ameri gives a detailed explanation to Iruma about exactly why she's suspending the Magical Apparatus Battler until further notice, noting that either one 3rd-year or three Dalet-ranked members are required to keep a Battler opened, and with Kiriwo gone (due to being arrested for his crimes, something Ameri doesn't know of happening), there is no other 3rd-year available to make the Battler viable.
    • The morning routine of the student council is slightly expanded to make it much clearer that Iruma is indeed staying in a dorm shared by the other male members.
    • The three one-panel scenes are decently expanded:
      • The student council conversing with the teachers shows the teachers complimenting Iruma's outfit and Iruma noticing Kalego's disdainful look out of angry confusion at seeing Iruma as part of the council.
      • The gardening scene includes the other council members helping out.
      • The morning greeting includes Dosanko trying to get something out of her eye only for her trio posse to tug at her eyelashh and nearly yank it out of its socket, some of the Misfits noting Iruma's current status with Caim expressing jealousy he gets to hang with Ameri, and Eiko fangirling over seeing Iruma and Ameri together due to her adoration of both.
    • Ameri stopping a student in his Wicked Phase is extended to have Iruma ask about that, before showing a flashback of Azz explaining exactly what a Wicked Phase is as a reminder for the audience.
    • Yet another manga-reading session is expanded, this time showing the male love interest anticipating something bad coming for him, with the female MC and rival competing over him. In yet another parallel to reality, this hints at both something bad coming for Ameri and Iruma later getting a rival for Ameri.
    • We get a SuKiMa style scene involving Sullivan and Opera worrying over Iruma staying in the student council dorms ever since he joined, with Opera being stressed enough (albeit without visibly showing it as usual) that they prepared themself some Hell Grey tea to calm their nerves.
    • The expansions to the trio of one-panel scenes are applied to the semi-repeated scenes involving Iruma having acclimated to his role as a member of the council.
    • The SuKiMa skit has Ameri talking with her father about how Iruma joined the student council. In her efforts to explain why she did so, she accidentally words her intentions in a way that makes Henri imagine himself as a grandfather to the child of her and Iruma... with the baby looking like Sullivan for some reason, which causes some more Dramatic Shattering with his glasses.

  • Episode 3 (Ch.49, 50, & 1/3 of 51):
    • The delinquent group's introduction panel is expanded to have them kick a can at a girl while other students watch in fear before the student council arrives. This is mainly due to how, with underage smoking being illegal to depict in anime unlike the manga, they needed a different way to show they're delinquents.
    • Dainty Ameri's introduction to the rest of the school is slightly extended to have the narrator express confused disbelief at her current status while the students gawk in surprise a little more.
    • The student council's patrol alongside Dainty Ameri is expanded to have them discuss the events behind her change, trying to figure out who did it and why.
    • Azz gets a scene alongside Clara where they discuss Ameri's change, with Azz convincing himself that her being Not Herself might be troubling Iruma and tries to go help him, only for Gal from the New Magic Battler to drag him away.
    • Caim and Eiko get a shared scene where they're so utterly enamored by Dainty Ameri's cuter attitude that both of them quickly pass out from glee.
    • The student council's first attempt to revert the personality change adds a Face Fault at the sight of her bringing sweets.
    • The discussion amidst the student council about the potential perpretator is expanded, with most of the discussion happening during their tired sit-down before showing a quick shadowed-out glimpse of the true culprit, and anime-original lines during the patrol that have the members singling out who they view as the top suspect before they reach the council room and meet Romiere, who is said suspect.
    • Romiere's introductions adds some extra details, such as having his two fangirls outright cheering for him and throwing flowers everytime they're onscreen, the student council members explaining to Iruma how Romiere's the Disciplinary Battler President and after Ameri's spot, and Romiere exclaiming his full name several more times throughout the whole thing.
    • Immediately after Romiere's introduction, he generates a Spontaneous Choreography where he and his two girls sing about his greatness and how much of an Attention Whore he is to Iruma and the council members.
    • The Dissolution Election declaration is expanded to have Johnny angrily admitting that despite being the prime suspect for Ameri's change, they can't prove Romiere did so before challenging them so they'd be easier to disband. Romiere also repeatedly yells "la-la-la" during the scene.
    • We get a night scene of Sullivan and Opera still sulking over Iruma staying in the school dorms, followed by a morning scene where Grave compliments Iruma on his screeching alarm clock, leading into Romiere's reappearance.
    • Lied and Jazz get a quick scene where they decide to make bets on how the election will turn out.
    • Romiere's declaration of his plans as the new Student Council President is expanded to include more potential benefits, has a scene where his statement that he makes no promises causes the students to stop paying attention and start to leave before he draws them in again, and tosses in a ton more sentences that simply refer to himself in third person repeatedly.
    • Schnare Eligos is given another Early-Bird Cameo during Dainty Ameri's attempted speech for drawing support.
    • Jazz outright states what the New Magic Battler president discussed with him instead of just alluding to it, along with passing out from amazed shock at seeing Iruma bring out Azz' dedicated side when he constantly failed to make the guy budge at all.
    • Lied dealing with Clara's crazyness is extended to include several more scenes of her destroying things and stressing him out, leading to him wondering if keeping track of her is like mothering a child, to which the Game Battler president posits her belief that it takes guts to be a parent. Both then leap away from frustrated shock when she instantly becomes calm and collected while answering a call from Iruma.
    • Iruma contemplating asking Kalego for help while certain he'd get angry is extended to have an Imagine Spot of Kalego being familiar-summoned and angrily chasing Iruma.
    • Iruma's scene of waiting in the student council rom wondering where Ameri went has an added quick scene of her depressedly staring out a window over how losing her edge is causing everybody so many problems.
    • The SuKiMa skit has Gal trying to strike up conversation with Azz, who doesn't care for anybody except Iruma. Jazz gives him the idea to strike up a conversation about Iruma, but doing so causes Azz to ramble on so much and in such detail that Gal experiences Color Failure from being overwhelmed.
