I know this is Just For Fun, but are there rules/limits to what can be posted on here? Like are we working from books that "exist" somewhere (like in show canon, or pre-existing fanon) or can anyone just create book titles/writers and tropes for (at least) them?

Loving this page, by the way.

We might be able to make them all individual Just for Fun pages. I have the pages up on the Wayback Machine right now and therefor have easy access to the coding for them. Something tells me we (and by we I mean I) would get super in troubke if we did that, though.

Curses, Goldude! The Daring Do fanfic I'm writing to go with this page is called Daring Do and the FOUNTAIN of time. Now I'm going to look like a copycat!

...So would it be too weird to have two stories with nearly the same title? I... guess I could change it, but the fountain is really the only artifact in the book that drives the plot.

Daring Do and the Time Stream? Just make the fountain water come from apparently nowhere but is actually magical time water from another dimension.

How do you guys feel about the latest Daring Do videogame and the fact Ahuizotl plans to force Daring Do to marry her as part of his evil plan for taking over Manehattan? Granted is heavy hinted that he plans to use the position of Mayor of Manehattan to get the lion share of any archeology digs in the area with the excuse of donating them to the local museums. Some fans pointed out he could just replace any relic with a fake with the escuse of preventing an accident like that crazy old stallion defacing that old painting of Princess Celestia with acid. While on one hand the move has interested the rare Daring Do & Ahuizotl shippers, on the other hand it makes no sence how Daring Do is forced to pretend to be his bride. Then again how the villain managed that is supposed to be revealed in the game and all we have so far is the beta. Personally I think the combination of collecting tons of item with the puzzle solving of an adventure game is not bad but I want to see Daring Do kicking flank.

Personally I'd add them as an EU trilogy, bringing in their characters and events, but with the caveat that what works with what's been written is taken and everything else is reworked to fit, rather than the other way around.

Is there any rule regarding moving books from pending to released? Is it up to the original posters wishes or after a certain amount of time does it become fair game? Not counting ones explicitly said to be delayed or to have a in-universe reason to not be published yet, of course.

Welp, It's October, and the set of three actual Daring Do books has arrived! I've read the first one so far, and it's actually pretty darn cool. Lots of fun world building.

But anyway, one neat little detail is that the books include a list of other books by A.K. Yearling. In other words, it's an official list of all the Daring Do books that have been mentioned either in the show or in the other chapter books by G.M. Berrow (plus one more new title, maybe). The list is as follows:

Daring Do and the Quest for the Sapphire Stone

Daring Do and the Griffon's Goblet

Daring Do and the Abyss of Despair

Daring Do and the Razor of Dreams

Daring Do and the Ring of Destiny

Daring Do and the Trek to the Terrifying Tower

Daring Do and the Volcano of Destiny

Daring Do and the Marked Thief of Marapore

Daring Do and the Eternal Flower

Daring Do and the Forbidden City of Clouds

The last three, of course, are the three actual books contained in the set.

Since I did not see a proper list, and the idea just wouldn't leave me alone, I am (Say it with me now!) defictionalizing the Teal Roper Daring Do Novels. Its based on the pre-'Daring Don't' version of the page but most of it's the same. Only real difference is I am making Yearling and her books A separate series from the Original Teal Roper novels (I have a head cannon for this).

Just for reference in case we decide to use it, here's A.K. Yearling's "official" biography:

"A.K. Yearling's adventure novels starring the fearless Daring Do have been recognized as the best-selling series in Equestria history. Yearling holds a degree in Literature from Pranceton University. After college, she briefly worked as a researcher at the National Archives for Equestrian Artifacts and Ponthropology in Canterlot. During that time, she wrote an essay based on her findings on the Griffon territories entitled "What was the Name of that Griffon Again? Or Beak and Roaming Studies Recalled." It was published last year by the University of Equexeter's journal, Pegasus. She enjoys quiet time at home alone and long trots on the beach."

The book titles are as follows:

Daring Do and the Marked Thief of Marapore!,

Daring Do and the Eternal Flower,

Daring Do and the Forbidden City of Clouds.

Then again this is by the same person who did the chapter books and we didn't add the two Daring Do books they bought up in those so, eh.

Wasn't what I was going for, sorry. I was trying to go for a more toony vibe using the fact that the Short Stories aren't 'canon'. But if that's what people think, and it's not just overeaction, I'll remove said material. If I unintentionally crossed the line to a creepy place I'm sorry. Again, just trying to see what a toony vibe to counterbalance the more serious stuff that's been done, using the Short Stories Non-Canonicity, sorry if I made things weird.

You know, considering one of the in-universe criticisms of the Blood Diamonds books is about how they did not use pre-established characters, why don't we have the horrible things happen to original characters?

Don't feel too bad about the Coltist Purge. Before we established what would become the character Attic Fan, I was under the impression that only the Colt Leader made it out in Amber of the Smooze. Besides, EU works are not mandated to be in canon with each other anyway.

Agreed. If shock is the goal, we could give her proper characterization for her fate to be properly horrifying for the reader.

Taking an established character from a different continuity and doing this to her without proper warning, foreshadowing or involvement from the rest of the continuity seems a bit cheap, and needlessly cruel to the character's creator, in my opinion. Not to mention that this character comes from the Young Daring Do series. In universe, this would be getting tremendous backlash, and would lead to the author's sanity being questioned. This would show up on the equestrian tvtropes' DMOS page with several agreeing on this very moment.

I would give final say to whoever made the sentai, though.

I haven't read too much into what exactly happened, but it's probably in very bad taste to do take someone else's character and derail him/her into something "perverse" (again, I don't know what happened). Especially if it wasn't the intention of the character in the first place.

It is one of the main reasons why that Cupcakes fic is so reviled in the fandom itself.

Yeah, as the guy behind the Harmony Sentai, I'd rather Kimono not be tortured to insanity.

Nothing against creative freedom, but the basic idea behind the team was Power Rangers, and doing that to Kimono is just too close for my liking to the infamous Agony In Pink fanfic (that incidentally was responsible for all explicit adult material getting banned from fanfiction.net).

Hey, is it OK, if I change the Synopsis of Daring Do's last book a bit to give her a more honorable end to her own series than as Damsel in Distress? Perhaps to something like "After Herpy Do frees Daring Do [from whatever predicament she is in] the two must track down a ring that is the key to releasing a creature with power monstrous enough to wipe the planet clean of all life." It will still Herpy Do a moment in the spotlight but let Daring Do complete her series in a more dignified manner.

Not exactly, but Miss Starlight and Short Stuff in "Cove of Candles" are basically Willie Scott and Short Round. Since they're dealing with pirates instead of an evil cult, there's no heart-ripping scene if that's what you're after. Since I'm the one who created Starlight and Short Stuff, I'm going to be throwing in more allusions in the quotes.

We've been able to wring so much material out of the Tinker's Seal books (huge props to Lopiny), I think there's room for one more Steam Whistle creation on the pages. I've even got the perfect idea for one. Thing is, we've wrung so much out of it, that I'm wondering if it's already too cluttered- I gave Tinker's Seal it's own folder on the CMOF page, since we've got so much dialogue from it.

So I ask: new artifact for what is already mentioned to be a Door Stopper of a book, or let it end as is?

For MLP:Fi M proper, Lauren Faust has said that she was trying to keep it as low-tech as possible, BUT if they needed something higher-tech for any reason, throw it in. Heck, the episode that spawned this whole Daring Do mess (wonderful mess!) has a lot of Schizo Tech — the hospital has X-rays, but Rainbow Dash uses a lantern filled with fireflies to read by. Shifting even further into fiction for the Daring Do version of Equestria, just go with whatever works best for the scene.

On the Characters page, the description for Inti quotes what Nightmare Moon said to him, but the description for Nightmare Moon states that what she said is unknown.

Which is it?

Having a "fanon bible" is fine, but I really don't want to see fully-fledged fanfics developed out of them : Keep in mind, the point of these pages is that it's a mock tvtropes page of a fictional work of fiction. It's supposed to resemble a real half-way to fully developed tvtropes page of a real work. Also, half the fun is to come up with ideas that could theoretically appear in the work and seeing others come up with their own material. Since there is no actual piece of fiction (aside from what was presented in "Read it and Weep") anyone could add what ever they want as long as it fits (and given what's been written already, it's very broad). Making a full fanfiction out of the "books" would kinda defeat the purpose and the page pretty much becomes just like every other Tvtropes page based on a fanfic.

TR;DR version: I don't want fully developed fanfics written out of the material on the page because that would kill the spontaneousness that makes these pages special.

EDIT: However, I don't mind if fanfics were written about the stuff on the pages, I just don't want it to go backward and have tvtropes page become about those potential fanfics.

Why not just declare you are doing a fanfic, and give it a title that isn't one of those listed?

That way you would be completely free to do what fanfic does: take bits from the "original" and re-imagine them as you please.

The existence of an Extended Universe, adaptations, and fanfic have already been given as fact on the main page. You would just be creating one of those, allowing the TV Tropes entry to continue to shift and be spontaneous.

PDL: Do you really think it's wise to NEVER pin down actual stories, and just let the tropes page continue to grow unchecked? Right now, it's an awesome fragmented summary of some wicked-sounding stories. After another, oh, say, 400 tropes or so, won't it stop making sense and collapse under its own weight? It's still unique if the stories get written - it's a tropes page that produced a work, as opposed to the other way around.

What I don't understand is that the book series is supposed to be for grade school kids. Why are there so many things that make it seem like it's for an older audience? (and you can't exactly explain it all as Getting Crap Past the Radar because it's so overt}. Not to mention that the villains are portrayed as complete monsters when the only real villain was portrayed as just really hammy and cliché.

If the series really is for school kids, then the content should kinda reflect that at least.

Well, I think the level of objectionable content is meant to mirror Indiana Jones - there is violence, and in rare cases even death, but a young, idealistic, adventurous tone keeps things light and not too scary.

...At least until Temple of Nightmare Moon, anyway.

Ahem

"The stories quickly became one of the most well-known classics in modern Equestrian literature, and are popular with grade-school pony classes. There's also a large adult fanbase as well; Princess Celestia herself has even praised the series. It is as of yet unknown if the series as a whole is complete or if further volumes will be "found"."

How can you claim that it's not for grade school kids when it says EXACTLY THAT in the main page? This is about the "core sixteen" books BTW. Also there are a number of references to a large Periphery Demographic consisting of adults. It wouldn't make sense to have this bit of information when adults were the target demographic all along.

Anyway, as I see it, the series appears to be much like Tintin (Which in a way is a grandpappy of the genre that Indiana Jones is a part off): It's supposed to be a decades-old series that was originally written for children (pony children in this case), but it's now probably considered Fair for Its Day. It would get a higher rating if it was a newer series, but since it's been around for longer then the ratings themselves were around for, it's under the effect of a Grandfather Clause. It being a Harry Potter analogue also fits in.

So, considering that the forum's MLP thread is massive and rapidly-evolving at a rate that makes picking out the Daring Do stuff nigh-impossible, I figured I'd ask this here.

I have tentatively gotten Dibs on the Temple of Nightmare Moon story, and before I start sketching out more thorough plot details, I want to double check some things from the tropes page and from the contributing tropers' thoughts.

1) Ahuizotl engages in a Batman Gambit, tricking Daring Do into essentially gathering the artifacts he wants for him, and putting them on display in a convenient copy of the temple he needs (arranged by the treacherous Nagridge). Blam. SO: WHICH artifacts are involved in this, and from WHICH stories? The ones from the other books, or a set of different, specifically NMM-related ones?

2) Related to that, there is mention of a MacGuffin for this story too (Daring retrieving it from the REAL NMM Temple, wrecking said building in the process), which would be among the relics needed for the ritual, though the Temple takes the title spot. So, has anyone mentioned yet what this story's deelie is?

The artifacts are nearly every single major artifact from every book so far, and a few that we've never seen before that are from as yet un written of adventures

Way i'm seeing it, the macguffin from the real temple is retrieved very early in the story, almost as a prologue adventure, and this was the last item Ahuizotl needed, so soon as Daring (after Nagridge's suggestion) gets all the artifacts set up, Ahuizotl swoops in and takes over, and starts enacting his grand plan.

I had been thinking about Krastos the Glue Maker recently, so I added some things about Krastos involving a possible scene in one of his expanded universe stories. I had the idea that one of the later scenes in that story could be that he goes to Chineigh (obvious Ancient China parody) and gets an artifact called the Jade Glue of Xiao Ma, which is a sort of power magnifier for him. It is made from the souls of damned Chineighse ponies encased in a jade glue pot. He uses the artifact to achieve his second form and also to destroy Chineigh. Maybe Daring Do could have her final battle with him in Chineigh, almost get defeated by his sudden increase of power, but somehow re-banish him to the coronet and reverse the destruction done on Chineigh. You can revert my edits if you want, I was just making some suggestions.

That sounds good, except I was imagining him being an often-recurring villain-maybe she could defeat him by having it turn out that the Sapphire Statue takes away most of his power, which would revert him to his normal form and force him to wait a while before fighting Daring again. She could use that method to de-power him whenever he gets too powerful in future appearances as well, allowing for several appearances from him. Plus, the Coronet was already destroyed, so he couldn't be re-sealed in it. Otherwise, that's really good!

Forgive me if it's already been covered, but how in Celestia's name is one meant to distinguish between Daring and Derring when reading aloud? It's one thing to say it avoids a One-Steve Limit, but it's a wholly different matter to have a younger sibling with a name that is pronounced (at least, to my ears) exactly the same way as the previous child. Yeah, that's pretty much it. The 16 book limit is there because in the episode there were apparently 16 books on Twilight's shelf, and if we don't have some sort of maximum number the page might just balloon a bit too much.
