I am not sure what the deal is with the Naughty Tentacles page. It has lots of wicks and inbounds but not much to show for in terms of content. According to the page discussion, the page was cut but came back. Is this supposed to be a No Examples page like Panty Shot? If so, it should clearly say so.

I could be wrong, but I think the intent was, at one time, to try to rewrite the article...I know it was one of those things that I'd thought about tackling a long time back but forgot about.

We had a big clean-up effort here to cut its wicks ("big" in the sense that it was so fast). Even then, it had few wicks relative to (what I can remember of) its inbounds.

IIRC, many of the wicks were sinkholes or shoehorns. Much of the misuse that I recall was to Combat Tentacles (where the trope was actually CT, but people wicked to NT instead), and I wouldn't be surprised if a significant number of its current wicks were also misuse.

There was something about it in Content Violation Discussions a long while back I don't even remember what it was about and such, perhaps take this there?

I for one really don't mind renaming it to Frisky Tentacles and going with tentacles that grab or get accused of grabbing Standard Female Grab Area and other PG-13/R rating and such. Usually with a 'Watch where your touching' from the girl.

Its a pretty standard anime trope used in pretty much all the way up the age ladder, even making it into Pokemon at one time IIRC.

Actual tentacle sex or rape should be kept off the page, yes there are works where it is consensual sex or even girls raping the tentacle monster.

Naughty Tentacles is a sexual trope. If there happens to be tentacles used in some way, that's not necessarily Naughty Tentacles, as it could be Combat Tentacles.

Uses of Naughty Tentacles outside of outright Hentai are people getting grabbed then possibly sexually harassed or accused of being sexually harassed by the frisky tentacles though. Possibly avoiding the grabbed part and going right to the frisky part or a fantasy or Imagine Spot of said harassment.

Yes this did pop up in kids shows too, probably not so much anymore but it was a cheap gag to get a laugh even though nothing was even close to being shown.

Kids stripping and sexually harassing their teacher was once appropriate for kids tv in Japan. And yes that show used this, an octopus got a little too frisky with said teacher.

[up] Ah, I see your point. If it's meant as a gag, though, having something in the title that conveys that may be helpful (maybe not the word "gag"), like Frisky Tentacle Comedy. Though I think it'd need a wick check for a rename, I'd support it given the trope's history.

It can be played as comedy. But it can also be played as serious horror or for fanserivce.

Many of them are completely open to interpretation on which is which and some might hit all 3.

There are some trope pairings where one trope is Played for Laughs ("for comedy") and the other is Played for Drama ("for serious horror"), and as I implied above, I'd support a split of the SFW examples to a differently named trope. "Naughty" in the title can sound lighthearted but "Naughty Tentacles" has been around long enough, I think, that it's specifically understood as the NSFW trope when it isn't just Combat Tentacles or "any tentacles"/"tentacles exist".

EDIT:

I realized that my previous statement was based on how the trope is currently used on the site, so I figured I ought to back up what I said. Here's a wick check specifically meant to look at this "drama"/"comedy" divide.

Note that I took statistics on all of the wicks, not a sampling of them.

Most of the current wicks allude to Naughty Tentacles as a sexual trope, not as a comedic gag. When an example alludes to NT as a more serious subject than, say, a joke, that's still only 5.17% (3 wicks).

I think this wick check helps show that tropers still identify this trope with its sexual connotations. Moreover, if we want to include "tentacles as a comedic device" to its meaning, then we should probably split it into another trope where it isn't going to have the competing ideas of "comedic device" and "erotic device."

    open/close all folders

    Criteria
Whether it was a "more serious take" on the trope or a "less serious take" on it, I'd consider that to be a "generally good wick." Note that this does not include the number of wicks that just reference tentacle porn, since I'd imagine that to be misuse of the fetish-y trope (for lacking sufficient context).

"Fetish-y" just means that the example has some element of sex (or sexiness) to it and it is not played for comedy. "Drama," then, means the example has no salient element of sex to it and it was not played for comedy either. "Tentacle Porn" means that the genre of erotica (is it a genre?) is the main point or focus of the example.

I included the Depraved Homosexual example as "Drama" because it's clearly not meant to be taken as sex-related in the work, unless I'm misunderstanding Bio-Shock.

"Comedy" means that the use of tentacles was meant to be part of a joke or Running Gag or something like that. Such examples aren't really sexual even if they are kind of perverted.

The "General Bad Wicks" are all obvious as to what they mean. "Tentacles Appear in Work" means that the example is essentially just saying "tentacles exist." Etc.

For Neutral Wicks, I included Zero Context Examples because I just always do. Some of those examples could've been misuse, more dramatic, or more comedic. See the evidence folder for my speculation. "Index," "Description," "Potholed," and "Archive" are all self-explanatory I hope.

    Descriptive Statistics
  • "Generally Good Wicks": 25 (43.10% of total)
  • More Serious Take
    • Fetish-y : 18 (31.03% of total)
    • Tentacle Porn : 3 (5.17% of total)

    Evidence
  • Foe Yay/Anime : Fetish-y ; And then she appeared in his illusion as a busty, Lamia-like half snake girl with tentacles that hugs him, then she closing on him and touch his face tenderly and began to seduce him again (to join her path).
  • Radar/Anime And Manga : Fetish-y ; The second season introduces Sergey, a Combat Sadomasochist whose strategy involves torturing himself with vines, and canonically derives pleasure from receiving and inflicting pain.
  • Characters/Babylon Five Centauri Republic : Fetish-y ; Bizarre Alien Biology: They have no major arteries in their wrists, two hearts, and as for their reproductive organs... well...
  • Bleached Underpants : "Tentacle porn" ; The Japanese woodcut master Hokusai created what is generally considered to be the Ur-Example of tentacle porn. Google "Dream of the Fisherman's Wife".
  • Web Video/Brutalmoose : Comedy ; In Space Dude, he encounters a Damsel in Distress who gets seized by a set of tentacles, and then a room full of balls.
  • Useful Notes/Censorship Systems : "Tentacle porn" ; It should be noted that this is the reason we have tentacle pornography.
  • Playing With/Child By Rape : Fetish-y ; The child is a Half-Human Hybrid because the rapist was some tentacled Eldritch Abomination.
  • Webcomic/College Roomies From Hell : Comedy ; Discussed when Marsha is asked to use her manga eyes to deal with the Thing from the Fridge
  • Funny/Common Sense : Comedy ; The fact that Ash's first meeting with Tentacool was her groping him with her tentacles.
  • Characters/Common Sense : Comedy ; Although nothing extreme, Tentacool hasn't exactly made it a secret that she enjoys groping Ash with her tentacles.
  • Video Game/D : Fetish-y ; While not a kid-friendly game, quite a few things are edited or blocked, the scene in the beginning where Kimberly gets a tentacle down her throat is slightly panned away, the placement of Jannie's Grandfather's tentacle was much more... Questionable (or Fridge Horror), and a few other edits.
  • Depraved Homosexual : Drama ; He's definitely depraved (and still homosexual) once Rapture starts falling apart, since the 2K Games-approved novel BioShock: Rapture mentions him forcing a teenage boy to fuck an octopus at a 'wild party.'
  • Did You Just Romance Cthulhu : Description ; Tentacles are a frequent feature.
  • Does Not Like Men : Tentacles Appear in Work ; Apparently this happened so often that the mere sight of a penis, even a cartoon one, causes her to imagine Naughty Tentacles sprouting from the guy's body, which can in turn trigger her hair-trigger Groin Attack reflex.
  • Film/Elle : ZCE ; What "tentacles in spades" means I'll never know. "The game developed by Michèle's company has tentacles in spades. A deliberately offensive mod with her face made by one of her employees, Kevin, is more blatant about it."
  • Characters/Everybody Loves Large Chests : ZCE ; I think this one counts as "Fetish-y" but there's really not enough context to know what "keep [them] happy" entails. "Boxxy uses its tentacles to keep Xera and Valeria happy, though it cares little for the act itself."
  • Evil Is Visceral : Index ; Listed as "Subtrope."
  • Administrivia/Example Sectionectomy : Index ;
  • Ho Yay/Fairy Tail : Fetish-y ; Larcade’s attempts to tie Sting down with white tentacles in chapter 510 and fill him with such a pleasant feeling that he would ooze with immoral ecstasy and moan in pleasure, just as he did with Yukino.
  • Getting Crap Past The Radar : Description ; "Many of the things that would stereotypically paint Japan as "weird", like "Naughty Tentacles", started out as attempts to skirt around laws like these"
  • Webcomic/Ghastlys Ghastly Comic : ZCE ; Commented out.
  • Webcomic/Heroes Of Inkopolis : ZCE ; "Unusual Euphemism: "The 11th tentacle.""
  • Literature/Holey Matrimony : ZCE ; Literally nothing but the trope.
  • Characters/Horror Within Void Creatures : Drama ; This is also Conversation In The Main Page but the core of the entry is "He can summon them in a kinky situation, but only uses them for restraint."
  • Funny/Jesse Cox Scary Game Squad : Sinkhole ; Part of a quote: "And? Tentacles do not care. They will go in anything, I've seen enough to know that."
  • Video Game/Links Quest For The Hookshot 2 Quest : ZCE ; Apparently an example of "Comedy": "The Tentai is a parody of this concept."
  • Characters/Little Shop Of Horrors : Fetish-y ; Well, it is a plant. However, he gets awfully... close to Audrey. Naughty Tentacles, anyone? There's also a scene where it tries biting a woman's butt.
  • Administrivia/Locked Pages : Index ;
  • I Thought That Was/L To Q : Fetish-y ; "… It has nothing to do with a popular subject of Japanese pornography, either."
  • Archive/Made Of Win Late 2009 : Archive ;
  • Monster Misogyny : Description ; Not helpful "See also" entry.
  • Playing With/Naughty Tentacles : n/a ;
  • Webcomic/Ninety Nine Righteous Men : Fetish-y ; Ashmedai's tentacle-like genetalia often wind up in pretty below-the-belt spots on others.
  • Nonstandard Game Over : Sinkhole ; Presumeably fetish-y: "Failing the "motivation" scene in Absolute Despair Girls will have Komaru softly say that she doesn't hate it, and Kotoko comments that she's all hers now. Then promptly lampshade that they can't show any further because of the game's rating."
  • Film/Octopussy : "Tentacle porn" ; Despite the title, it has surprisingly little to do with a popular subject of Japanese pornography.
  • Older Than Radio : Index ; Reference to Hokusai.
  • Funny/One Piece : Misuse ; It's not even a tentacle. "In the same scene, Luffy interrupts by wrapping his neck around Nami like a tentacle, followed by Nami shaking his outstretched head to berate him while still tied up."
  • WMG/Poison Oak Epileptic Trees Archive : Fetish-y ; It's listed under the WMG "The Genitalia Arms Race will be the death of humanity."
  • YMMV/Pokemon Ruby And Sapphire : ZCE ; Under Unfortunate Character Design: "Lileep's and Cradily's pink tentacles can easily be mistaken for something else."
  • Just for Fun/Princess Kenny : Sinkhole ; "where Sam kills Kenny by impaling her with one of his tentacles in the least subtle way possible."
  • Rule Of Sexy : Misuse ; It's an entry on the index, but the misuse comes from the implication that the trope is about "sentient tentacles." Quote: "Naughty Tentacles - In reality, were tentacles to become sentient, no reason would exist for sex with humans."
  • YMMV/SCP Foundation : Fetish-y ; Note that this is under Squick but the part with NT is the festish-y part of the entry: "SCP-2678's horror comes in two parts: in part one the D-class is "dosed" and happily submits to the "pit", its Naughty Tentacles, and its liquefying, uh, liquids (it's missing the "squeezing" that usually happens) while part two subverts all the fetish-y-ness of vore: the thing's aphrodisiac is gone, the D-class is terrified and disgusted, the "pit" isn't interested in having fun, and it's implied the people who were "eaten" have become living excrement, not the unified being the cult that summoned the pit (or that the pit sought out) was hoping for."
  • AATAFOVS/Seduction : Fetish-y ; There are six gigantic pods that she loads the gang into, tentacles sliding beneath their clothes to penetrate them, their flesh turning green as they gasp suggestively, still unconscious.
  • Sexual Harassment And Rape Tropes : Index ;
  • YMMV/Spider Man : Tentacles Appear in Work ; Deosn't help that the symbiote's main power is forming tentacles on command.
  • Characters/Super Effective : ZCE ; It's pretty much just a quote, but it seems to be just "Tentacles Appear in Work": ""Oh sweet! Tentacles!""
  • Characters/Supergirl 2015 Villains : Fetish-y ; Under Accidental Pervert: "It strongly clings to Kara's chest, though without sexual malice on its part. The fact that it has tentacles also does not help."
  • Awesome Music/Theatre : ZCE ; Commented out.
  • Video Game/The Last Sovereign : Fetish-y ; "A somewhat unusual example: temporary shadow tentacles created with lust magic."
  • Administrivia/The Second Google Incident : Potholed ;
  • Video Game/The World Ends With You : Combat Tentacles ; The quotation under Combat Tentacles: "If you're not careful, that obscene tentacle will start violating your HP!"
  • SCP Foundation/Tropes E To M : ZCE ; But given the other example, we know that this is fetish-y: "SCP-2678's aphrodisiac and Naughty Tentacles cause the D-Class exploring it to have several "unintelligible vocalizations""
  • We Are Not Alone/Tropes M To P : Fetish-y ; Tentacle erotica
  • Menage A 3/Tropes M To R : ZCE ; Commented out.
  • Trivia/TV Tropes : Fetish-y ; It's a matter-of-fact entry under Genre-Killer concerning porn tropes. "Naughty Tentacles and The Second Google Incident killed Porn Tropes and led to the creation of a new organization of Tropers dedicated to screening new and existing pages for adult content."
  • Values Dissonance/Video Games : Fetish-y ; "Mara's presence alone should be enough to force an M rating on any MegaTen game it's in, since the Persona in question appears as a man-sized slimy penis with a mouth, spindly human arms and Naughty Tentacles riding a chariot."
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear/Web Comics : Fetish-y ; "An unfortunate Gary once had to use his hands to cover another man once Yuki shows up unannounced. To the uninitiated, Yuki has... a bit of a problem with penises."
  • Characters/White Dark Life : Drama ; "Alongside his book, this is his only means of attacking. It mostly takes the form of thorny vines that he uses to humiliate and shred apart anything he can't use his real powers on... And himself."

It's easily SFW if it's just implied, off-screen, mentioned, or otherwise not explicit.

Panty Shot didn't get the examples removed because of any NSFW-ness. They were cut because of the No Lewdness, No Prudishness rules (unless it was the other way around), as that far too many examples were extensively detailed and sourced to the exact page and/or time stamp. Well, the original cut probably happened during the purge, but there have been many discussions about it.

Panty Shot's example list was removed because having such a list makes us look like creeps who are making a catalogue of wank material. And such lists tend to get overly detailed entries.

Some of the fetish-y wicks were alluding to the more lewd trope even though they were not themselves explicitly lewd, so even though they were sexual or related to sex, it isn't necessarily NSFW. Maybe "not safe for family-friendly television" is better rhetoric. I was working on the understanding that it isn't always NSFW even when it is the "more lewd" or "more serious" trope.

The current trope description reads:

Some Horny Devils and Eldritch Abominations have nothing on their minds but sex. They want it, they want it in quantity, they want it now, and they want it from nubile young women (especially beautiful and cute Japanese schoolgirls). To this end, they almost always manifest in forms that have many, many tentacles - tentacles that are used to violate women.

See also All Anime Is Naughty Tentacles, which is when people expect anime to be this trope if not Hentai.

This description gives the impression that it is a purely NSFW trope, especially the line about violating women. Furthermore, it sounds rather creepy.

This needs a neutral rewrite, as well as a broader description of how the trope is used.

A rename to comedy tentacles would also create a more neutral, SFW impression. Negative examples could then go under Combat Tentacles or something similar.

[up] It is a NSFW trope: characters getting caught up by tentacles for erotic bondage effect. But I agree the description comes off bad, especially that line about Japanese schoolgirls (I believe it's adventurers or fighters who are the usual victims). Somehow it seems prudish and lewd at the same time.

Part of the problem is that this very often goes together with Combat Tentacles, there's a proper fight going on but some fanservice shots are added in.

It needs to be more analytical, like:

"The use of tentacles for titillation, in which they typically grab a victim on all limbs and slither over her (usually) body. Occasionally it may be mutual pleasure, as in ''The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife'', often considered the Ur-Example. The appeal probably comes from how tentacles can constrict movement, can enter any orifice, and are much more like a tongue than a bony limb (though in this case they may allude to penises instead).

This type of erotica is associated with Japanese manga and OVAs, and may be attributed to the prolific work of Toshio Maeda. However, it has always been a very small niche even in Hentai, but a few infamous releases in the eighties resulted in the perception that All Anime Is Naughty Tentacles. Similar motifs have occasionally appeared in erotic art from around the world."

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.
