This name is too broad for the trope defined therein.

World Map, the trope, is specifically about Final Fantasy style world maps where you maneuver your character around in a more or less free-roaming manner.

However, there's another variety: A destination-select menu screen decorated with the world's map; you more or less pick a destination and the character runs straight there. E.g. Final Fantasy X, New Super Mario Bros, and Pokemon Colosseum.

There are also some cases of the trope getting used as a stock phrase for "overworld" or "map" in general.

This is a complete Wick Check with a primary focus on poor*

examples.

The context does not make clear what kind of map is in play here:

Misuse of the page's definition

These are specifically referring to "map selection screen" style World Maps, not the "free-roaming" style maps.

Other pages looking like misuse

Use as a Stock Phrase

Not (necessarily) classifying these as "misuse" — these are mostly using the term at face value.

IMO we should just soft split it Mario 3 style and Final Fantasy / Dragon Quest style.

On those unsure ones.

Dissidia actually uses both to an extent with Chess piece moving maps and the sequel added a FFVII looking one on top of the chess maps.

Clown Car certainly seems to be referring to FF style.

Well, with that new trope in the assembley line, I think this one might get better, as long as both are limited so they don't overlap.

Are there no correct examples in that wick check?

Maybe what we need is a trope transplant. World Map becomes the supertrope for maps of the world in video games since the pre-existing term is used for all of them. Specific variations get their own subtropes.

I support a transplant. When I hear the term World Map I would never assume it means anything more specific than Exactly What It Says on the Tin. More specific types should have specific names of their own.

So which tropes to make? And names? Let's see, ideas for tropes involving a world map.

  • World Map Skill or item: RP Gs especially early ones you have to use a skill or consumable item to display the full world map incase you get lost. Final Fantasy this skill was called Sight and the item called Gnomish Bread.
  • World Map Macguffin: Early on in the plot of a video game you will be given a world map, sometimes it comes out of nowhere, others you get charged for it.
  • Mini Map: a map of the world, zone, area displayed in a corner.
Types of actual video game World Map s as the trope right now covers
  • The RPG World Map walk around the world going from town to town, usually with Clown-Car Base type views. Which has evolved over time.
    • The classic top down view of RP Gs of old
    • The "Mode 7" map of the SNES and Sega era
    • The 2 1/2d map done at an angle (I forget what it is called.)
    • The PS 1 era 3d maps
    • The sprawling fully 3d maps of games like Dragon Quest VIII and Sandbox games like Elder Scrolls.
  • Icon based maps that kinda look like chess pieces, ie Mario 3 or Dissidia.
  • Destination Map: Chose your destination from a list or curser and click go to go there. IE Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XIII 2's world map.

I completed my check, and of the 136 articles there are 40 left over that seem to be using the stated definition correctly. (Remember, the ones I cited are not necessarily misuse).

If we want an official crowner to decide options with, I've started writing a Page Action crowner, however I'm having trouble thinking up distinct options beyond "supertrope/transplant".

Nothing about the name World Map makes me think is it video-game only. Don't other mediums include maps of the world in which they are set?

[up] Honestly, no. Not as part of the media itself. And maps in general showing up in media are not referred to by the same pre-existing term.

Honestly, no. Not as part of the media itself'

That was a rhetorical question, and your answer is false. Everything from books to tabletop games can includes world maps as a geographic reference for the reader. Even films will sometimes do it.

Also, "World Map" is a pre-existing term for all maps of the world. In common use it is not at all restricted to videogames.

A map of the world rarely comes up in a non-video game story as an actual trope. Maps that do appear tend to be only a map of the surrounding area. (IE Lord Of The Rings.) or as a Treasure Map.

If a map of the world is included in a work to communicate information to a reader, it is a trope.

If there is some pressing reason to make a this Videogame specific, rename it.

Yes, if it's supposed to be video game specific, it needs a rename. There are plenty of non-video game world maps as tropes, otherwise.

No, there is no TROPE of world maps in other media. Maps exist, and are used as maps, but that's People Sit On Chairs. There is no trope there. Thus they aren't tropable. World Maps in video games are a trope on the other hand under the game mechanics as tropes clause.

[up]What are these maps where all the setting is described in the cover of a book? I am not going to buy they are chairs without details.

[up] Those are almost never maps of the entire world, or even a decent fraction of it. At most they tend to be maps of the specific area that the work takes place. As such, they are not world maps and don't qualify for the name.

I have never seen a boilerplate map of a whole world. Kingdom maps (maps showing the entirety of one kingdom or country) are probably the most common, but most of them don't even cover that much.

TL;DR: Those aren't world maps. Try again.

So, World Map is

  1. The preexisting term for a Video Game trope
  2. Those rare worldwide back-of-the-cover maps when they are world-wide.

Do we have a trope for back-of-the-cover maps? If yes, I would suggest to rename World Map to something like World Map (videogames) and to redirect World Map to this trope. If no, make it and then redirect.

Fantasy World Map is that trope. It's a type of paratext and much much much rarer than the video game version. Naming it like you want to will really confuse people as we don't name any other tropes like that at all. There's no reason to blatantly disregard our naming conventions for a case that shows up a thousand times less frequently.

Just a not to be confused with line at the bottom of World Map is enough to clear that up.

Personally I think we should make World Map a supertrope or even an index to the different types and uses of video game "world maps" like how I laid it out here

We have Fantasy World Map as the general case, and Left-Justified Fantasy Map as a common implementation. World Map in its current form seems to be a preexisting term.

[up]So, what are the ideas? What would be a good alt-name for the videogame trope World Map? Video Game World Map is the other thing I get here.

And there isn't any chairs here.

World Map seems to have no confusion for the non-video game version. The other versions either have tropes that are working fine under their current names or are chairs. Thus World Map as the pre-existing term makes the most logical sense to use.

Video Game World Map on the other hand introduces confusion as it's not a pre-existing term and is thus harder to remember. As such it will encourage misuse and wikiscitzophrenia. Using it as a result would be a bad thing and bad for the wiki.

Especially as the only non-chairs, non-game version is much much rarer and isn't being confused for this trope.

Thus if we want a name that will work the best for the video game supertrope, we should call it World Map. We're all in favour of names that will work the best on the wiki aren't we?

[up] Gotta agree with shima on that one. And as for "preexisting term" I have seen many many video games call it that and such hell bottom left hand corner...

I just think we should have the subtropes for the different types of World Maps and Map Screens.
