Go To

War of the Biju: The Fourth Shinobi World War is an Alternate Universe Fic of what had happened right after the Invasion of Pain in Naruto. Instead of Danzo Shimura being named the Candidate Rokudaime Hokage by the Daimyo, Shikaku Nara quickly nominates the hero of the village, Naruto Uzumaki to be Hokage. Realizing that at this point if he uses his Kotoamatsukami to force the Daimyo to make him Hokage anyway after he liked how Naruto described, Danzo lets it happen, biding his time till he can take the Hokageship. As the result of this nail, a similar, but still heavily different war is waged between the Shinobi Alliance and the Akatsuki, ensuring that the world will never be the same.

The last chapter was posted on March 14, 2020, bringing the story to completion at 41 chapters and 376K words. However, the author promised that several sequels would follow. The first of them, based on Kakashi Hiden: Lightning in the Icy Sky, can be found here. The second, based on Shikamaru Hiden, can be read here

It's compared to The Hokage's Will in the beginning, since it was inspired by it.

    A to D

  • Abled in the Adaptation:
    • Due to Hiruzen being the one who opens the Eight Gates and using Night Guy, Might Guy doesn’t permanently breaks his right leg.
    • Neither Sasuke nor Naruto lose their dominant arm during their final confrontation.
  • Action Mom:
    • Kushina Uzumaki, shows why she is the mother of Naruto Uzumaki by kicking ass, taking one the wood clones of Uchiha Madara and why she is known as Red Hot-Blooded Habanero.
    • Junko Sarutobi, Konohamaru’s mother, shows why she’s a member of Konoha’s ANBU when the village is attacked by Sasori and a bunch of White Zetsus.
  • Action Girl:
    • All the female Naruto characters get to be this in some way or another. Hinata being one in recent chapters due to being Naruto's love interest, even awakening a higher level of the Byakugan. Sakura gets training from Kakashi to make her a more solid Combat Medic. And even Karin is able to form a plan and nearly kill Kakashi with a special trap.
    • Sakura defeats Pakura, who is in this continuity a former Godaime Kazekage candidate, Ameyuri Ringo, and with Kakashi's and Monga's help she defeats the fully transformed Yondaime Mizukage Yagura herself!
  • Adaptational Backstory Change:
    • Tobi on account of him not being Obito here.
    • The Uchiha Clan has a slightly modified history, as it’s revealed that not all agreed with Madara’s choice in allying with the Senju which resulted in a branch.
      • Because of this, Madara doesn’t go solo after losing to Hashirama and decided to join the Branch family.
    • According to Word of God, Mitsuki’s reasoning for moving to Konoha is different in this story considering that Orochimaru never makes his Hazy-Feel Turn.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Naruto manages to befriend and fully bond Kurama much earlier than he did in canon, which allows him to put a better fight against Edo Madara once he's finally summoned to the field.
    • The Konoha 11 are way more badass in this fic than they're in canon. While only Neji has the rank, all of them have Jonin level of skill and power (and in case of Sakura, Kage level). Eventually they all reach Kage level over the course of the war, with Sakura and Hinata now on par with Naruto and Sasuke, after they got their power-ups from Hagoromo via the Kama Seal and Tenseigan respectively.
    • Besides the "sharingarm" and Senju DNA, Danzo also has a Rinnegan that his minions collected from one of Pain's corpses.
    • Chukichi, one of the minor zombies of all people. It was never mentioned if he even has a Kekkai Genkai, but here, he had the Dark Release nature.
    • Tsunade as well. In canon, her powerset was pretty much Super-Strength and regeneration that reduced her lifespan. Here she has Sage Mode, Uzumaki Chakra Chains, and combining those two abilities to create a giant golem made of chains that's strong enough to fight a Biju or a Perfect Susanoo.
    • Kabuto deserves a special mention, as here, his desire to become the new Sage of Six Paths actually becomes true, as in addition to his body modifications and snake senjutsu from canon, he manages to awaken the Rinnegan thanks to the combination of Sakon and Ukon’s Kekkai Genkai, Madara’s DNA, Hashirama’s DNA, and a Snake Senjutsu technique.
    • As expected as someone who is known as the Professor, Hiruzen has shown to be able to open the Eight Gates.
    • Not only does Kakashi keeps Obito’s left Sharingan, it also managed to evolve into a Rinnegan when Obito’s right evolved into one. It was revealed that this was temporary, but it still healed the damage caused by overuse of the Mangekyo. In the sequel, with his regular eye going blind, Kakashi is set to inherit Obito's other eye, which will give him a full Mangekyo Sharingan and all of its powers.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Shin Uchiha makes an appearance to confirm Orochimaru’s revival.
    • Toneri appears when the Ten Tails is revived.
    • Hamura Otsutsuki appears to Hinata while the latter the unconscious and gives her the chakra necessary to awaken the Tenseigan.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • The only fight that hadn't been expanded on was The Raikage vs Sasuke. Notable in the Nine-Tails Attack on Konoha...where Hiruzen, kid Yamato, Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and teenagers Kakashi and Gai all get to fight Kyuubi.
    • Word of God says the War will be a month instead of a couple days.
    • Also, the Gold and Silver Brothers are given a rather extensive backstory, which detail their Start of Darkness.
    • The expansion goes so far that some people start switching opponents. Naruto fought the Sandaime Raikage in canon. He still fights him, but he also fights the Nidaime Mizukage as well. Gaara and Onoki, who fought the latter in canon, instead fight the Nidaime Raikage.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Obito died before he could ever make a Face–Heel Turn, making him this trope.
    • Karin's Heel–Face Turn sticks, and she soundly rejects Sasuke after he goes off the deep end.
    • Sasuke himself makes his Heel–Face Turn far earlier than he did in canon.
    • Madara. Canon Madara was an egotist who created the Moon's Eye Plan just to prove Hashirama's ideology wrong. This Madara went through with the plan because of misguided concern about his clan, and he fully intended for them to inherit the Earth when it was completed. This eventually leads to him making what is effectively a Heel–Face Turn to take down Tobi after learning from Sasuke that he was responsible for slaughtering the Uchiha Clan. He's even infuriated to learn Tobi murdered Obito, whereas Canon Madara only ever saw Obito as a pawn.
  • Adaptational Intelligence:
    • Kabuto in canon is by no means an idiot due to his past as a spy and his specialty in medical ninjutsu. But here, in addition to using his Edo Tensei zombies a bit more strategically, he manages to both figure out and replicate the process that Madara used to awaken the Rinnegan.
    • The Ten Tails is capable of forming its own thoughts and has shown to work against and kill its host if it feels like they’re unworthy, like with Tobi.
  • Adaptational Job Change: Because Naruto is the Sixth Hokage here, Kakashi mainly works as a regular Jonin after the War.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Both Tsunade and Mei, both of whom only shown interest in men in canon, are both bisexual in this story.
  • Adaptational Skimpiness: Hinata's new outfit in the first interquel is described as sleveless top, revealing some cleavage and exposing some of her stomach that replaces her old coat, as well as very short shorts replacing her old pants.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: The process used to revive Orochimaru granted him the Byakugan instead of Jugo’s Kekkai Genkai, Sakon and Ukon’s Kekkai Genkai, and Kimimaro’s Dead Bone Pulse.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Kabuto due to escaping before Itachi has the chance to use Izanami on him.
    • Unlike in canon, Orochimaru doesn’t perform a Hazy-Feel Turn after being revived, and is only indirectly helping the Allied Forces out of necessity since the possibility of the Allied Forces losing would negatively affect his plans.
    • Tobi ends up receiving this due to him not being Obito. Hagoromo even goes as far as to wonder how a person this vile could exist.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • It’s revealed that due to the circumstances leading to her death never happening, Rin was forced into working as Danzo’s personal medic after the Kyubi attack.
    • Shin Uchiha becomes Orochimaru’s second in command when it’s made clear that Kabuto has no plans of returning to such role.
    • Hinata and Kurotsuchi form a friendship from their time at the Turtle Island.
    • Due to him being revived and her never dying, both Minato and Kushina presumably have a hand in raising Boruto and Himawari as Word of God states that they replace Hiashi as their Doting Grandparents.
    • Three of the official couples are Neji and Tenten, Shino and Fu, and Tsunade and Mei.
    • Tamaki isn’t dating Kiba due to him dying here.
    • Hinata and Naruto would gain ownership of Akamaru after Kiba’s death.
  • A God Am I: Tobi declares himself a god after absorbing the Ten Tails.
  • Alternate Universe: Thanks to a combination of Retcons, Continuity Drift, Acceptable Breaks from Canon, and For Want Of A Nail. The most significant change is that there was a subset of the Uchiha Clan, comprised from families that refused to join the main clan and Konoha at its founding. Madara joined this subset after his defeat at the battle of the Valley of the End, and Tobi is (supposedly) descended from them as well.
  • Ambiguous Situation: In the Kakashi Hiden short story, it's revealed that Kakashi's original eye is degrading and he's about to go blind in that eye, but because he keeps holding off appointments, Tsunade straight up doesn't know why, at most making guesses.
  • Ancestral Weapon: In this fic, the Senpu Roga is a weapon of the Inuzuka Clan, with Taitama, Kiba’s grandfather and clan head in life, being the last known possessor.
  • Arch-Enemy: Tobimaru is a Hate Sink despised throughout the shinobi world, yet no one hates him more than Team 7. He caused the Kyuubi attack on Konoha, leading to the deaths of Naruto's parents (one of whom was Kakashi's sensei), thus being the cause of both Naruto's shitty childhood and the tensions between the Uchiha Clan and the village, the latter of which led to the Uchiha Clan Massacre that destroyed Sasuke's childhood and started him on the dark path that led to him abandoning his team and Konoha as a whole. Later on, it's revealed that he murdered Obito and stole Obito's remaining eye, and revived Kushina and kept her as his prisoner for years. By the time of the Final Battle, every member of Team 7 wants him dead, and all four play pivotal roles in his final defeat.
  • Arranged Marriage: It's revealed that Fugaku intended to arrange one between Sasuke and Hinata. He was killed before it ever came to fruition.
  • Ascended Extra: The Third Kazekage, the Second Raikage, and Fugaku Uchiha are among the reanimated zombies Kabuto brought back, with the Third being tasked to lure out Naruto and B while the Second replaces the Third Raikage in the Kage group that fights the Fourth Division, and Fugaku being among the zombies that confronts the Second Division.
  • Asshole Victim
    • Just like in canon, Danzo Shimura remains this. Sasuke admits that killing Danzo is the only thing he still doesn't regret, and Itachi even agrees they were better off without him.
    • After every atrocity he's committed here, nobody sheds tears for Tobimaru when the Ten-Tails turns on him and kills him.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Boy does Naruto show he deserves the Hokage post by beating Sasuke, breaking 'Tobi's' mask, and defeating Kyubi in one on one combat.
  • Back from the Dead:
    • Unlike in canon, Tobi fully revived the dead Jinchuriki fully as his Six Paths of Pain. This change remain after the War’s end.
    • Tobimaru fully revives Minato with the intentions of torturing him back to death. Minato is saved, however, and Word of God confirms he will survive the war and take the place of Hiashi as Doting Grandparent to Naruto and Hinata's kids.
  • Badass in Distress: In the Shikamaru Hiden side story, Tenko ends up being captured by Orochimaru and Gengo during his mission to infiltrate the Land of Silence.
  • Bash Brothers: As the two youngest Kages at the Summit and best friends in their own right, Naruto and Gaara had this dynamic both during the meeting when all five started arguing among one another and when Sasuke attacked.
  • Behemoth Battle: During the fight of the Kages against Madara, Madara's Susanoo versus Gaara's sand construct and Tsunade's giant chain golem.
  • Berserk Button:
    • The Edo Tensei pisses off the main cast even more so than it does in canon, as Kabuto goes as far as to revive famous shinobi who died during the war. Both Hinata and Choji are understandably unhappy when they're forced to fight their recently deceased fathers.
    • Kakashi's button is pressed hard when Kabuto revives an artificially aged up Obito to fight him, and is only pressed harder when he realizes that the eye Tobi has been using is his best friend's.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: Like in canon, we have Tobi and Kabuto in a paper thin alliance, with both of them waiting the chance to betray the other. Orochimaru later decides to join the fray for his own reasons.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Tobi is about to kill Konan, while the Nanabi is rampaging and destroying her village. Cue Tsunade and Gaara crashing the party to save the day.
    • After his location is discovered, Naruto sends clone to every single battlefield and turns the tide immediately.
  • Broken Aesop:
    • Unlike the manga, averted. Besides giving them a A Day in the Limelight, the Konoha 11 fighting and winning against the past legendary ninja resurrected by Kabuto showcases the "new generation surpassing the old" theme that the manga tried (and failed) to deliver.
    • Tobi not being Obito fixes the Broken Aesop that plagued the series regarding Kakashi's decision to not let him die facing the Iwa shinobi alone during Kakashi Gaiden.
  • Brother–Sister Team: Neji and Hinata, even though they're (technically) first cousinsnote .
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Unlike in canon, Gaara is much harsher on his father after learning the truth about Karura and Yashamaru. Rather than bursting into Manly Tears, he chides Rasa for being a terrible father and Kage — but, in the end, still forgives him, telling the Fourth Kazekage to take that as his one comfort when he returns to the Pure World.
  • Can't Catch Up:
    • Kiba laments how back in the Academy and the Chunin Exams, he used to be Naruto's rival, while now not only is Naruto on a whole different league, but most of the Konoha 11 are also much stronger than him as well. Eventually, however, this feeling diminishes as he increases in strength.
    • Itachi. While still an effective combatant and Kage-level ninja, all of the major characters are on their way to surpassing him if they haven't already, while Itachi himself is unable to develop his skills further due to being dead and an Edo Tensei. By the time he arrives to help during the Final Battle, he's outright stated to be the weakest of all the major combatants. Even Kakashi, who Itachi defeated during his first appearance, had surpassed him, as his Mangekyo Sharingan had temporarily evolved into a Rinnegan during that battle. That's not even getting into Sasuke, his 'less-talented' younger brother, who had already surpassed Madara by the time of Itachi's arrival and ended the battle on par with the Sage of Six Paths.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You:
    • This is one of the reasons why Hinata refuses to kill Hideki, the son of Kumo’s previous Head Ninja. She cites that the Allied Forces need every single able person in order to fight the Akatsuki.
    • Shin is this to Orochimaru to some degree. His unique biology means that he's not completely expendable like Rahyo and Orochimaru will not kill him outright, but he is willing to make his life hell and torture him for any failures.
  • The Cavalry: The entire Shinobi Alliance arrives during the Final Battle to back up the Konoha 12 during their battle against Tobi, Madara, and the Ten-Tails. Aiding them is the Sixth Division, the Relief Division, led by the now fully-healed Konan.
  • The Chessmaster: Orochimaru has been everything that he can to ensure his rise as a dominant player once the War is over.
  • Civilization Destroyer: The Ten-Tails destroys the Land of Frost, killing every living thing there (including all five Daimyos and the shinobi guarding them) and leaving it a lifeless crater. When the first four Hokage arrive there on their way to the Final Battle, they're horrified by the senseless destruction, with Hiruzen noting that the damage wrought from all of the previous Shinobi Wars put together can't compare to the damage of this incident alone.
  • Clothing Damage:
    • Naruto's jacket and shirt are damaged by Sasuke's Susano'o arrow, and Hinata's coat and mesh shirt are torn open by Kabuto when she tries fighting him.
    • While Tsunade survives a fire jutsu of Madara thanks to her regenerative powers, her clothes aren't so lucky, and she has to fight him naked.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Danzo has the Sharingarm like in canon, but added Nagato's Pain Path eyes to give him Animal Path's powers, Human Path's, and eventually Asura Path's.
  • Combination Attack: Mei combines Boil Release chakra into the Water Dragon Jutsu.
  • Continuity Drift: This story was published years before the manga ended in late 2014 and the anime ended in 2017. As a result, there is some minor continuity drift. The most notable is the issue of Tobi's identity: when Naruto broke Tobi's mask at the Kage Summit, the narrative blatantly states those present saw Madara's aged face. After the manga confirmed that the real Madara had been dead for years and that Tobi wasn't him, the story retconned it so it was obvious War of the Biju!Tobi wasn't Madara as well. Though, Not His Sled kicks in when it's revealed that Tobi isn't his canon identity Obito either.
  • Cool vs. Awesome: Sasuke's Final Susano'o vs Naruto's Senjutsu-enhanced Futon: Rasenshuriken. Rasenshuriken wins.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Invoked, discussed, and defied. When Itachi arrives to the Final Battle and tries to distract Tobimaru with Tsukuyomi, Tobimaru mocks for his over-reliance on 'big, flashy genjutsu' and breaks the illusion... only for Itachi to smirk and reveal that he just tricked Tobi into believing he used Tsukuyomi so that way he could catch his enemy in much weaker (but more effective) genjutsu. Itachi even admits that Tobi is right and that Itachi relied too much on his more powerful illusions, so he decided to make use of that.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • During the attack on Konoha, Tsunade No Sells all of Sasori's poisons and absolutely crushes him in direct combat.
    • Gaara's fight with his father is even more one-sided than it was in canon, as Rasa is caught absolutely flat-footed when Gaara goes in for close-quarters combat.
    • The final fight between Team 7 + Hinata and Tobi, especially when the latter suffers from a Villainous Breakdown.
  • Darker and Edgier: Compared to canon, the Fourth Shinobi World War is treated very seriously, such as death being more common, which includes civilians and other people not involved in the War.
  • Day in the Limelight: All the Konoha 11 gets it in the War Arc, each showing how far they've came by fighting elite undead shinobi oftentimes one on one and in Rock Lee's case two on one and win.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Kō Hyuga had his body hijack by Orochimaru via his Living Corpse Reincarnation technique.
    • Characters that made it to the end of the war alive bite dust here, such as Hana Inuzuka, Choza Akimichi and Hiashi Hyuuga, among others.
    • Obito in this fic isn’t Tobi, and because of this, has been dead for years.
    • Onoki doesn't survive Madara dropping an asteroid on him.
    • A preforms a suicide attack during the Kages' battle with Madara.
    • Suigetsu, Jugo, and the Daimyos were outright obliterated by the Ten-Tails' attack on the Land of Frost.
    • Kiba is Killed Off for Real for well, though like the Kages, he got a Dying Moment of Awesome.
    • Word of God confirms that Ao is staying dead after the Ten Tails attacks the Sensor Division.
  • Declaration of Protection: Right before he departs to the Kage Summit, Naruto makes one to all of Konoha, announcing to the crowd that, from now on, he protects this village.
  • Decomposite Character: The fanfic has a case of this in hindsight. Obito Uchiha was long dead before the story started, leaving Tobi as a seperate character.
  • Demoted to Extra:
    • The first three Hokage when compared to their roles in the War in canon. Tobi manages to destroy the bodies of Hashirama and Tobirama while Hiruzen pulls a Heroic Sacrifice in two chapters after Orochimaru brought them back. Minato is only spared from this because Tobi uses the Rinne Tensei on him and is subsequently saved before being killed.
    • The real Madara also got the short end of the stick here. Here, his reanimated body got destroyed once Tobi sealed the Ten-Tails inside himself and managed to tame it.
    • Kaguya Ōtsutsuki doesn’t get revived during the War, and her role as the final villain is supplanted by Tobimaru. It's confirmed that she does exist however, as Tobimaru mentions her offhandedly during the Final Battle.
    • Might Guy does not join Kakashi during his trip on the Tobishachimaru during the adaptation of Kakashi Hiden and is thus far absent, as Rin is the one who joins Kakashi during the side story.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Kisame is killed by Guy instead of committing suicide.
  • Died Happily Ever After: Itachi is a weird mix of this and Earn Your Happy Ending since he died before the events of the story but remained a character throughout due to the Edo Tensei. Either way, he plays a key part in the war by aiding Naruto, B, and Hinata in defeating Nagato, and is visibly seen aiding the Alliance during the Final Battle by delaying Tobimaru at a crucial moment, giving his brother and friends the necessary amount of time to heal so they can defeat Tobimaru for good. After Tobimaru's defeat, he returns to Konoha, his name cleared, officially recognized as a hero of both the war and the village, and gets to spend a few weeks with his younger brother, finally giving them the chance to catch up and reconcile. Finally at peace, he is released from the Edo Tensei and returns to the Pure Lands with a smile on his face.
  • Died Standing Up: Onoki, which even Edo Madara respects him for.
  • Dirty Coward: Tobimaru proves himself to be this, since despite his multiple stolen abilities, he ultimately relied on his followers to do his dirty work because he was too afraid of confronting powerful shinobi unless he felt like he had the strength to win, something that even Kakashi taunts him for. He was even going to run away despite being the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki when the heroes start to overpower him, something that disgusts the Ten-Tails very much.
  • Distant Epilogue: Similar to the manga, Chapter 41 contains an epilogue that takes place roughly 15 years after the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War.
  • Doomed Hometown: Kumogakure. That being said, thanks to Tsunade's foresight, all the civilians and the remaining shinobi guarding them managed to evacuate in time. The only casualties were Shikaku, Inoichi, and Ao, who stayed behind to organize the evacuation.
  • The Dragon: Orochimaru offers Shin Uchiha Kabuto’s position, which the latter accepts.
  • Dumbass No More: Post-Time Skip Naruto was nowhere as dumb as he used to be in Part I, but in this fic he is much smarter than even Part II Naruto, most likely as a result of having to take command as Hokage, and then as Supreme Leader of the Allied Forces. For one thing, he's the one to suggest hiding him and Bee away for the first part of the war, since he knows that his inability to control Kurama will make him a liability no matter how strong he is. And when he is discovered, rather than muscling past his guard, he orders them down as their Hokage and uses logic to justify his decision to depart for the battlefield.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome:
    • Hiashi Hyuuga releases the Caged Bird Seal from every branch member of the Hyuuga clan and names Hinata clan head, permanently merging the Hyuuga into one clan.
    • Onoki Died Standing Up, naming his granddaughter Kurotsuchi as Tsuchikage with his dying breath.
    • A charges Madara in a suicide attack, giving the rest of the Kages the opportunity to take down Edo!Madara. He also names his second-in-command, Darui, the next Raikage in his place.
    • Kiba performs his own suicide attack against the Ten-Tails, giving the monstrosity it's first major injury by taking out its tail.

    E to O
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted.
    • As seen above, Gaara isn't as kind to his father as he was in canon, and his forgiveness is treated more as a Cruel Mercy more than anything else.
    • After his Heel–Face Turn, Sakura confesses to Sasuke that while she still loves him, she hasn't forgiven him. If he wants her forgiveness, he has to earn it.
      • This sentiment is carried on a platonic level by many of the Konoha nin, as the reason they’re only willing to tolerate Sasuke is because he’s very useful to the Allied Forces and that Naruto is vouching that he won’t go bad.
  • Elemental Punch: Hizashi reveals that in order to compete with Hiashi, he developed a way to infuse lightning chakra into his Gentle Fist techniques.
  • Enemy Mine:
    • The real Madara joins the Allied Forces in fighting against Tobi.
    • Orochimaru still helps The Alliance despite his Adaptational Villainy, although his reasoning is more how much of a threat Tobi is to his long term plans and wants to remove a dangerous rival.
  • Enlightenment Superpowers: Hinata awakens her Keihatsu Byakugan after gaining some enlightenment and making peace with her worries over Naruto.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Madara calls Kabuto "morbid" for disrupting the eternal rest of so many deceased ninjas in order to build a fighting force. He also says that talking through one of his zombies is even more morbid.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy:
    • Madara takes no time to show Kabuto that reviving him was a huge mistake.
    • Tobimaru suffers this fate when the Ten-Tails finally runs out of patience with his inability to defeat Naruto, Hinata, Sasuke, and Sakura, breaking out of the weakened Tobimaru's seal and killing him.
  • Failed State: In the years after the Fourth War, Kumo has been slipping into utter collapse with Darui having immense struggle trying to keep remaining citizens in the village while the other Kage such as Mei are having their own difficulties trying to get investors in trading due to climate change surrounding it.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • Kabuto's is his tendency to underestimate his opponents. Throughout the war, he underestimates Naruto, Sakura, Kakashi, Hinata, Bee, and even Edo Tensei!Itachi — someone that he summoned for the war.
    • Like in canon, Itachi's I Work Alone complex is this, which is shown that unlike in canon, he has no backup during his fight against Kabuto, as it's completely in his summoner's favor and ultimately results in his attempt in reversing Edo Tensei failing.
  • Fighting Your Friend: Everywhere. Thanks to the Edo Tensei, shinobi are unwillingly forced to fight against their deceased comrades, many of whom were close friends and even family of their opponents. Aside from the canon examples, Hinata, Neji, and Choji are all forced to fight their deceased fathers, while Kakashi is forced to fight Obito, who, in this story, never made a Face–Heel Turn.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Much like in canon, shinobi from all across the world come to band together through their shared trials over the course of the war. In particular, Onoki, who outright told Naruto he didn't trust him due to his status as Minato's son, ultimately dies after giving the last of his chakra to Naruto and Gaara, ordering his two younger contemporaries to do what he could not and defeat Madara in his place, implicitly acknowledging them as trusted friends and comrades.
  • Flash Step: Minato's, A's, and Naruto's later fighting style.
  • Foil: According to the author, Tobi is this to Itachi. Like Itachi, he was a prodigious shinobi of one of the two branches of the Uchiha Clan, who would eventually go on to slaughter his fellow clansmen. Unlike Itachi, he had no noble reasons for it — he killed them for power and because he liked killing in general.
  • Foreshadowing: A greater threat looms over the horizon after the Fourth Shinobi War as the remnants of the Otsutsuki Clan, a tribe of celestial beings makes their move towards Earth and Orochimaru will once again become a Big Bad and a major antagonist in the New Era unlike in canon where his potential was squandered.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: As per canon, Sasuke is this when he joins the Allied Forces in fighting against Madara, as his skills make him useful.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Tsunade is forced to fight pretty much naked after Madara's fire jutsu burns most of her clothes.
  • Gender Flip: Muta Aburame is female in this fic.
  • Good Costume Switch: Upon her return in chapter 38, Konan traded the red and black Akatsuki cloak for a white cloak with a sun motif.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Shikamaru gains a scar across his face after his and Ino's battle with Edo Tensei!Asuma.
  • Hate Sink: Tobi. Slaughtered one branch of the Uchiha Clan because of no other reason than that he wanted to, murdered an aging Madara in his sleep to hijack his plan, murdered poor Obito for his eye, caused Kurama's attack on Konoha, framed the other branch of the Uchiha Clan for it, etc. You know you're evil when Madara is not only willing to make a Heel–Face Turn against you, but team-up with Hashirama to stop you. Hagoromo even wonders how someone so evil could even exist.
  • Heel–Face Turn:
    • Karin. Unlike the manga, she doesn't go back to being a Sasuke fangirl after defecting (despite the fact that in this fic Sasuke never attempted to kill her in order to kill Danzo), is actually made part of the Shinobi Alliance Force, and fights alongside Sakura.
    • Sasuke makes his earlier than in canon since his fight with Naruto happens right after Naruto fights Edo Tesnei!Nagato with Edo Tensei!Itachi, Bee, and Hinata.
    • Madara, of all people. A combination of Adaptational Heroism and Tobi being that vile of a person causes him to side with the Shinobi Alliance after learning that Tobi was responsible for the complete destruction of the Uchiha Clan. He even teams up with Hashirama and gives his life to buy enough time for Naruto and the others to heal, so they can stop Tobi for good.
  • Heroic B So D: Naruto after witnessing and sensing the deaths of the Sensor Division and Kiba.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • Kiba uses his Gatsuga to push Naruto, Hinata, and Neji out of a barrage hair missiles, subsequently taking the hits in their place. He then uses the last of his strength to perform a suicide attack, taking out the Ten-Tails' tail.
    • Tobirama takes a fatal hit from Tobimaru head on to save Itachi from the same fate. His last words are to tell him that he has the Will of Fire and that he needs to pass it on.
    • Instead of Guy opening all Eight Gates and using Night Guy, Hiruzen is the one who does it here while Team 7 + Hinata were unconscious.
  • Hope Spot: When Edo Madara unleashes the asteroids on the Fourth Division, Naruto manages to blast one away with a Bijudama, then Gaara and Onoki take care of the second one like they did in canon. Madara congratulates them... and then asks what they'll do about the third one.
  • Humiliation Conga: Tobi's final defeat sees him punted around by the newly-empowered Naruto, Hinata, Sasuke and Sakura, the eye he stole from Obito stolen back by Kakashi while the latter is delivering a "Reason You Suck" Speech on Tobi's cowardice, and then shredded to the death by the overwhelming power of an infuriated Ten-Tails over said cowardice. Every bit of it is deserved and no one has a shred of pity for him.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite Neji not dying during the war, Naruto and Hinata chose to name their oldest son Boruto.
  • I Work Alone: Itachi went to fight Kabuto by himself despite Naruto's protests, and it comes to bite him in the ass spectacularly as unlike canon, he is unable to get Kabuto to perform a Heel–Face Turn and he went off to join Tasogare.
  • Kick the Dog: Many of Kabuto's Edo Tensei are set against specific battalions to cause mental anguish to his most prominent enemies. For example, Kakashi is the only one in the Alliance who could've stopped Obito, thanks to Kamui — he's also one of the few smart enough to realize that. Kabuto had to have known this, and is smart enough to realize that tactically, sending Obito against him would've been a bad move. He did it anyway just to piss Kakashi off.
  • Killed Off for Real:
    • As of right now, Hana Inuzuka, Hiashi Hyuga, Choza Akimichi and Danzo have been killed in the war.
    • In Chapter 34, the inability to stop the third meteor results in Onoki's death.
    • In Chapter 36, due his inability to catch up with the rest of the Kages, A sacrifices himself with one attack in order to give Tsunade an opening against Madara.
    • Wordof God states that unlike in canon, Ao is getting this when the Ten Tails attacks the Sensor Division.
  • Kneel Before Zod: After becoming the Ten Tails jinchuriki, Tobi demands everybody present to "bow before their new God".
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Similar to canon, Tobi ends up having his ass kicked by Sasuke and Naruto, two people whose lives he fucked up.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: The Inuzuka Clan Head Kiba fights during the Battle of Lightening Ridge, Taitama, reveals right before their battle that he is Kiba's maternal grandfather.
  • Lightning Bruiser: A.
  • Magnetic Hero: Much like in canon, Naruto is this, enough where Gengo tries to mimic him in trying to attract his own followers.
  • Master-Apprentice Chain: Kurenai was Hinata's sensei for Team 8. Years later, Kurenai's daughter Mirai is the jonin sensei of Team 8 for Hinata's own daughter Himawari.
  • May–December Romance: Pun not intended, but Mei (who’s 31) and Tsunade (who’s in her mid 50s) stared dating after the War and later got married.
  • Mighty Glacier: Word of God states that Sakura is this after receiving the Kāma Seal, at least when strictly compared to Naruto, Sasuke, and Hinata when they get their buffs from Hagaromo and Hamura.
  • More than Mind Control: Gengo's preferred method of attracting followers as he wants them to join him out of his own free will.
  • Named by the Adaptation:
    • The Fire Daimyo's name is Uesegi Tokusei.
    • Konohamaru's mother is named Junko and his father is named Daichi.
    • The Third Kazekage is named Arata.
    • Hiashi's wife is named Hana.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Danzō believes he and Sasuke are this, as from his POV, both are guided by their anger and hatred and are willing to commit less than savory methods to accomplish their goals. He even goes as far to name Sasuke as his successor as the "Shinobi of Darkness".
  • Not His Sled:
    • Unlike the source material, Tobi is not Obito Uchiha (nor is he the original Madara). This is most likely because this story was written before the manga revealed Tobi wasn't even Madara, let alone that he was Obito. To further emphasize this, Obito was revived by the Edo Tensei to fight Kakashi.
    • While Kushina is telling Naruto the story of how the Kyubi was sealed inside him, she stops near the moment when she and Minato were about to die, and Naruto says that he can fill the blanks. Except that she managed to survive, and spent the next 16 years as a prisoner of Tobi.
  • Not So Invincible After All:
    • Much like in canon, injuries from attacks from the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki cannot be regenerated by Edo Tensei. As a result, Tobi manages to kill off Tobirama and, presumably, Hashirama and Madara, while they're buying time for Naruto and co. to be healed.
    • The Edo Tensei also can't regenerate from use of the Eighth Gate, so Hiruzen's body is burned out by it when the technique wears off.
    • As per canon, Natural Energy and Taijutsu are the only effective methods to harm the Ten-Tails and its jinchuriki.
  • O.C. Stand-in: Fukui/Killer Kay takes Blue B's place as Gyuki’s previous Jinchuriki and as A and Killer B's cousin.
  • Odd Friendship: Hinata bonds with Kurotsuchi, the granddaughter of Onoki, during their time together on the island turtle. They even fight in the same division together.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Orochimaru says to Shin Uchiha that in exchange of becoming his second in command, he will receive a curse mark and Hashirama’s DNA.
  • Official Couple:
    • Naruto and Hinata, who get together in the beginning of the story after Nagato/Pain's death.
    • In the epilogue, in addition to having most of the confirmed couples from chapter 700 of canon, known couples include Tenko and Karin, Neji and Tenten, Shino and Fu, and Tsunade and Mei.
  • On One Condition: Orochimaru tells the revived Hokages that they can help the Allied Shinobi Forces without his control under the condition that they keep his revival and involvement secret.
  • One Last Smoke: After saying goodbye telepathically to their loved ones, Ao, Shikaku, and Inoichi have some sake while the Ten-Tails launches a tailed beast ball at Kumo.
  • One-Man Army: Several characters: All the Kages, Naruto himself, Rock Lee, Sakura, Neji, and even Hinata have shades of it for the heroic side, Kabuto, Tobi, and all resurrected shinobi on the villain side.
  • One-Night-Stand Pregnancy: According to Shima, this how Tenko, the son of Jiraiya and Tsunade, was conceived, as the two were celebrating Minato's coronation and the former managed to woo her and convinced her to have unprotected sex.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: B has not been coping with the death of A very well, as in addition to mostly taken on a hermit life in the two decades after the War, but also barely raps.
  • Original Character:
    • Tenko, who is the biological son of Jiraiya and Tsunade after a one night stand, and was raised by the Toads of Mount Myoboku.
    • This story's incarnation of Tobi is eventually revealed to be this.
    • Some of the Edo Tensei zombies, like Taitama Inuzuka.
    • Tendo, a mysterious Uzumaki who recruits Kabuto into his organization called Tasogare.
    • In addition to Boruto and Himawari, Naruto and Hinata have Tsune and Shina.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: What stuns Rasa during his battle with Gaara and ultimately causes him to lose is seeing his youngest son use close-combat techniques (specifically, kenjutsu/swordsmanship) against him.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Tsume Inuzuka, one of the surviving parents of the Konoha 12, who outlives both of her children. She remarks upon this, noting that while she is proud of both of them, that doesn't change the fact that she shouldn't have outlived them.

    P to Z
  • Passing the Torch: Sometime after the War, Hinata hands over leadership of the Hyuga Clan to Neji despite some protest from the more conservative members of the Clan.
  • Please Keep Your Hat On: Ibiki pulls off his cap to show his scars to Himawari's graduation class to show that a shinobi's life is nothing like what is seen in the movies and video games and how dangerous it is if unprepared.
  • Properly Paranoid: The fact that Shin helped Rahyō with his Sharingan's Space-Time ninjutsu has not gone unnoticed by Minato, who decided to send Konan to assist Rin and Kakashi in guarding the Tobishachimaru during its maiden voyage, correcting deducing that the Ryūha Armament Alliance will be attacking the vessel and Minato himself cannot go out of a belief that his arrival could cause a scene.
  • Raised by Wolves: Tenko is revealed to be raised by the Toad summons in secret from Jiraiya after Tsunade didn't think she was fit to raise him, although she made a point to visit him every once in a while.
  • Rank Up:
    • Instead of Kakashi or Danzo, Naruto becomes the Sixth Hokage. When Tsunade wakes up, they share the post, with the understanding that Tsunade will formally retire when the war is over.
    • Right before the attack on Konoha, it's revealed that Tsunade and Naruto had promoted Konohamaru to Chunin, most likely in recognition of his performance against one of the Paths of Pain. By the time of Kakashi Hiden, both Hanabi and him are promoted to Jonin.
    • After the attack of the Gedo Mazo, Sakura, Choji, Hinata, Ino, Shikamaru and Shino are all promoted to Jonin, both because they earned it and as a morale booster. They also promote Shino and Neji to Proxy General status for the Fifth and Second divisions, respectively.
    • With his dying breath, Onoki names his granddaughter Kurotsuchi as Tsuchikage.
    • Like Onoki, A names his right hand Darui as the next Raikage before his death.
  • Reformed, but Rejected: Downplayed somewhat with Konan. Even though her role during the War helped mitigate the worst of how people feel about her, there are people who feel that she hasn't done enough to be accepted into the Shinobi Union on equal footing or to be fully forgiven for her actions as an Akatsuki member.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Homura is Udon’s grandfather.
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Said almost word for word by Kisame.
  • Second Love: The canon omake for Chapter 38 implies that Mei is this for Tsunade. The epilogue confirms this when Naruto mentions that the two got married.
  • Self-Imposed Exile: The Shikamaru Hiden story reveals that Yagura felt great shame for his brainwashed actions during the Blood Mist era and thus choose to settle outside the Hidden Mist.
  • Sequel Hook:
    • Orochimaru and Kabuto are still at large, remaining antagonists unlike in canon, and have new allies at their side.
    • While it's more accurately an Interquel Hook, Son Kenshin states he's going to write his own version of the Hiden and The Last: Naruto the Movienote  storylines.
    • Son Kenshin confirms that Himawari will become the protagonist of the New Era rather than Boruto.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Karin pulls this off when she realizes that Sasuke is beyond help and unlike canon, it mostly sticks and doesn't go back to being a fangirl and easily forgives him when they reunite during the war.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Tenko's flirting manages to get a blush out of Sakura. He also has some with Karin.
    • Tenten and Neji may or may not have a thing going on. In Kakashi Hiden, they're revealed to be dating.
    • Konohamaru and Hanabi clearly feel something for each other, but since they're so young, they don't exactly realize what it is yet. By the time of Kakashi Hiden (which takes place approximately a year after the war), they're about to go on their first date.
    • It seems that Mei and Tsunade have a thing for each other based on the canon omake in Chapter 38. The epilogue reveals they got married.
  • Shipper on Deck: All of Konoha has become this for Naruto and Hinata in the wake of the Invasion of Pain.
  • Shout-Out: The monkey Konohamaru summons during the Battle of Konoha is not only named after Sun Wukong from Journey to the West (although unlike the Four Tails, his is a transliteration of the original Chinese instead of the Japanese on'yomi), he can transform into a staff that has similar attributes to Wukong's Ruyi Jingu Bang.
  • Single Tear: Gaara's reaction to learning the truth about Yashamaru and his mother, opposed to the Manly Tears he had in canon.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Unlike in canon, where Sakura became a Love Martyr for Sasuke, Sakura admits to him that she still loves him but also tells him that he will have to earn her forgiveness and his chance to be with her, if he wants it.
  • Sinister Scythe: Rin's weapon in the Kakashi Hiden side story.
  • Sole Survivor: In the sequel, it's revealed that Minato and Kushina are the sole survivors of the graduates of their Academy class. Everyone else in their generation either died prior to the war or during it. Understandably, this hits them both hard.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Unlike in canon, Kushina did not die when Kurama was extracted from her and has been Tobi's prisoner since the day Naruto was born.
    • In this story, since Madara did not designate Obito as his chosen successor, he never orchestrated the events that led to Rin's death. Rin was later saved by Danzo during the Kyuubi attack and was subsequently press-ganged into ROOT as his personal medic.
    • Konan is saved by Gaara and Tsunade from Tobi.
    • Neji, as Word of God confirms that Kiba will be the only member of the Konoha 12 to die.
    • With the exceptions of Inoichi, Shikaku, and Ao, every staff of the Allies HQ were evacuated before the Ten-tails launched its Biju Ball at it.
  • So Proud of You:
    • Nothing can compare to the sheer pride in Kakashi's eyes as he watches Naruto be fitted for his Hokage robes. He even wonders if this is how Jiraiya felt when his own student, Kakashi's sensei, and Naruto's father Minato became Hokage.
    • Many of the Edo Tensei tell their children this after said children manage to defeat them. The most notable being Hiashi, Hizashi, and Choza.
    • Much like in canon, Itachi expresses pride in Sasuke. Unlike in canon, it's also because he gets to see the true measure of Sasuke's potential, and is overjoyed at how much his little brother has surpassed him.
  • The Starscream: Just like in canon, Tobi to Madara. In fact, it's even worse than in canon — as since Tobi isn't Obito here, he lacks whatever Obito had left of his moral fiber. So his betrayal went beyond waiting for Madara to die and hijacking the plan, as he killed an aged Madara himself, along with Obito for his eye.
  • Start of Darkness: The Gold and Silver Brothers path of evil started when back in the Warring Clans era, Madara and a few other Uchiha massacred their clan, with them and a few others as their only survivors.
  • Super Breeding Program: A big part of why the Hyuuga Clan Elders are fine with Naruto and Hinata being in a romantic relationship lies with this, as by the end of the War they have inherited god-like powers and any Hyuuga gaining them sounds too good to pass up.
  • Super Mode: Besides all the canon examples, Temari has Sage Mode here. The author also mentioned that more characters would learn Sage Mode as well.
  • Superior Successor: A persistent theme throughout the story, for heroes and villains, is that of the previous generations outpacing the previous ones. Even legends like Madara and Hashirama are ultimately defeated by Tobi, only for the villain to still lose to the bright new teens.
  • Surpassed the Teacher: All of the Konoha 12 has managed to surpass their respective teachers.
  • Technicolor Fire: Madara's fire jutsu burn with such intensity, they're actually blue as opposed to orange/red.
  • Teeth Clenched Team Work: In the weeks leading up to the War, it's shown that having an army comprised of multi-national people has this as a downside, given that there are some grudges that are still held and fights about the past would happen.
  • This Is Unforgivable!:
  • Title Drop: By Orochimaru in chapter 38.
Orochimaru: If this was going to be a 'War of the Biju', an Allied Shinobi Force was needed to counter.
  • Together in Death: Non-romantic example: Hana and Kiba Inuzuka.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • The entire Konoha 11. For example, Tenten is said to have Jonin level of skill, fights on a Power Armor she built herself, and managed to defeat an Edo Tensei of a Konoha Jonin powerful enough to be considered a candidate for Hokage, all by herself (though she only defeated him the second time they fought). And according to the author, she's the weakest of the group. As the war goes on, it's clear that every single member of the group has managed to surpass their teachers and are on the way to becoming legends.
    • The Suna Siblings haven't been slacking off either. As noted above, Temari has mastered Sage Mode, while Gaara has added kenjutsu to his skill set (complete with a katana made out of his sand), meaning he's no longer restricted to mid and long range combat.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: Koharu and Homura decided to follow Hiruzen and Naruto’s example and chose to fight during the Battle of Konoha.
  • Tranquil Fury: Shino is understandably angry when Hana, his best friend Kiba's sister, dies. But even that anger pales in comparison to the almost-silent rage when Kiba himself dies.
  • Underestimating Badassery:
    • Many of the Edo Tensei zombies to the younger generation. For what it's worth, most are pleased when they're proven wrong. Itachi, for example, is surprised but happy to note that Hinata defeated Kakuzu and is still able to aid in the fight against Nagato.
    • Their summoner, Yakushi Kabuto, is by far the worst at this, something even he is eventually forced to acknowledge.
    • Edo Madara speaks down to Lee after learning he can only do taijutsu, wondering how far Konoha's standards had to fall to allow Lee into the ninja program. Lee then removes his weights, showing Madara why he's one of the strongest members of the strongest generation of shinobi in history.
    • After absorbing the Ten-Tails, Tobi constantly underestimates his opposition. Thus, their coordinated teamwork prevents him from making any headway in the fight for a long time. Even after he manages to temporarily take out Team 7 and Hinata, Itachi, who is by far weaker than everyone else he's fought thus far, manages to trick him into a genjutsu and hold it long enough for the four to be taken to safety (albeit with Tobirama's help).
  • Undying Loyalty: Itachi to Konoha, as in canon — his last request is to ask Naruto for a mission to end the Edo Tensei, even going as far as addressing him as "Hokage-sama". Even after all this time, he still sees himself as a Konoha shinobi and is willing to bow his head towards a Hokage that is younger than him.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: An unorthodox example concerning Tobi. Initially, this fic goes with the assumption that he is Madara. But when canon revealed that wasn’t the case, War retconned it to reflect this. But even then, Tobi ended up being an original character instead of being Obito.
  • Villain Respect:
    • Despite losing against him badly, Madara still acknowledges Naruto, Gaara and Onoki as strong opponents.
    • Eventually he comes to view Naruto, Sasuke, and their entire generation as this, even going as far as to acknowledge that they may have surpassed him and Hashirama.
  • Villain Team-Up: In the Kakashi Hiden short story, Kabuto purposes one between Otogakure and Tasogare in order to fight the new Shinobi Alliance and the Otsutsuki's planned invasion of Earth, an offer Orchimaru accepts.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Tobimaru, after becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki, starts the fight smug and haughty, believing that the godlike power he now has makes him invincible. But as the heroes continue to push him on the defensive and prove otherwise, especially when Naruto, Hinata, Sakura, and Sasuke receive their new powers from the Ōtsutsuki Clan and Kakashi takes Obito's eye from him, Tobi slowly loses his cool until he's left shouting useless death threats like the Sore Loser he truly is.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?:
    • It was never specified what exactly happened to Haku after Kakashi warped him into the Kamui Dimension.
    • Oddly, there's no mention of Konan and Amegakure in the final chapter, though it's likely that they still remain allies to Naruto and Konohagakure. The Kakashi Hiden side story confirms that she's serving as the head of Rain.
  • Worthy Opponent:
    • Several of the Edo Tensei find them among the younger generation they're fighting against, which is an immense relief to them as it means they've left their homes in good hands.
    • Edo!Madara acknowledges Naruto as one early on, when one of the latter's Kage Bunshin manages to give him a hard time. He even considers him worthy for the title of Hokage, which, considering how Madara treated Tsunade in canon, is quite the commendation.
    • Speaking of Tsunade, he also acknowledges her as this after she proves to not only have matched Hashirama, but also to have surpassed him in certain aspects. This respect spreads to the rest of the remaining Kages, if only to a lesser extent.
    • Eventually, he comes to see the entire Konoha 12 as this, after they defeat his army of wood clones. He flat out calls it an "honor" to be fighting their generation, which is probably the greatest compliment he can give to anyone.
  • World's Strongest Man/World's Best Warrior:
    • More like generation. Per Word of God, the Konoha 12 are the strongest generation of shinobi in all of ninja history, not just Konoha's. Their weakest member, Tenten, easily qualifies for an elite-jonin rank, while their two strongest, Naruto and Sasuke, are among some of the greatest shinobi to have ever lived. When the rest arrive to the Final Battle to back up Naruto, Hinata, Sasuke, and Sakura, even Tobi begins to panic.
    • It's revealed that Neji surpassed every Hyuuga in the clan about six months before the war started. That makes him the strongest Hyuuga on the battlefield (though Hinata is a close second). At the end of the story, however, Hinata starts to surpass him as her Byakugan evolves. After Otsutsuki Clan arrive and awaken Hamura's chakra in her, she's not only the strongest Hyuuga on the battlefield, but also the strongest Hyuuga in history, and a kunoichi on par with Team 7 themselves.
    • Sakura has also surpassed Tsunade much earlier than she did in canon, and is now regarded as the greatest medic in all of the Shinobi Alliance. Tsunade does, however, take back the title of Strongest Kunoichi after she masters her Sage Mode. Sakura then takes that title back when she's given a Kama seal by the Otsutsuki.
    • After his son defeats him, Rasa declares that Gaara has surpassed both him and his predecessor the Sandaime Kazekage, making him the strongest shinobi Suna has ever produced.
  • You Are in Command Now:
    • After Tsunade goes into a brief coma, Naruto is declared the official Rokudaime Hokage. Even after she wakes up, the position is permanent with the implication that Tsunade will retire when the war is over. Then Minato is fully revived by Tobi in the final battle, meaning that Konoha now has three living Hokage.
    • With the deaths of their fathers, Hinata and Choji are now the heads of the Hyuuga and Akimichi clan, respectively. The same goes for Shikamaru and Ino after the deaths of their fathers.
    • When all of the Five Kage are forced onto the battlefield, Nara Shikaku is put in charge of Headquarters, and thus the entire war effort.
    • Onoki uses his last moments to name his granddaughter Kurotsuchi the Yondaime Tsuchikage.
    • Similarly, the Raikage names Darui the next Raikage before going out in a suicide attack.
    • With the deaths of the Daimyos, all five Kage are now in charge of their respective countries until the Daimyos' successors can be officially declared.
