Kakashi Hiden: Lightning in the Icy Sky, written by Akira Higashiyama, is set shortly after Sasuke's departure from the Hidden Leaf. Kakashi is in no hurry to officially take over as Hokage, so Tsunade is still in charge -much to her chagrin. She tasks Kakashi with providing security for the Tobishachimaru's maiden voyage. Things seem to be going well, until a group of terrorists is discovered planting explosive tags on the airship.

Naruto Hiden (a.k.a. Naruto Secret Chronicles) is a light novel series which explores the stories of various characters after the conclusion of the original manga. Though each book is illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, they are written by different authors. And yes, they are part of the canon continuity.

Be warned: SPOILERS ahead. The events of the Epilogue are considered common knowledge, so read no further if you're not up to speed with the manga.

Tropes present in the novels include:

  • Brought Down to Badass: One of the novel's major plot points is how losing the Sharingan has affected Kakashi. Sure, he's still a highly-trained ninja, but can't use any of the Sharingan's techniques, or even Raikiri properly.
  • Call-Back: Naruto can use his new arm very clumsily, just like Obito had trouble handling his artificial limbs at first.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Naruto's right arm is missing in the Prologue, since Tsunade hasn't finished constructing his prosthetic one.
    • Kakashi's face is carved on the Hokage monument, as seen in Chapter 699 of the manga.
    • Kakashi cannot use Raikiri safely because he lost his Sharingan, which eliminated the tunnel vision effect Raikiri has.
    • Guy's right leg is still in a cast form his battle with Madara.
    • The Blood Prison (Houzuki Castle) seen in the titular fifth Shippuden movie is a real place; however, the events of the film are implied to have played out somewhat differently in canon (naturally, given Blood Prison's large number of Continuity Snarls); among other things, said events seem to have taken place at a much earlier date than what the movie implied, and Naruto knew all along that he was on a mission to infiltrate the prison rather than being left to believe he'd been framed.
  • Defector from Decadence: Kahyou explains that the inegalities in the Mist forced Zabuza to leave Kiri. In fact, he was the first to do that.
  • Die Hard on an Airship: Specifically, it's Die Hard 2 on an airship.
  • The Dreaded: The name "Naruto Uzumaki" is well known in the ninja world, with many considering him invincible. When the Armament Alliance takes over the Tobishachimaru, one of their terms is that if Naruto Uzumaki or anything even vaguely resembling Naruto Uzumaki appears in the horizon, they'll blow up the airship and kill all the hostages.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Hokage Kakashi is still treated very much like before he became Hokage. Naruto and the rest of the Konoha 11 play a joke on Kakashi and he ends up inviting everyone to Ichiraku.
  • Handicapped Badass:
    • Even lacking one arm, Naruto can still punch his way through an enemy camp, head straight for their leader ignoring all his elite bodyguards, grab him and escape without breaking a sweat.
    • Might Guy proves he's a tough opponent even with his right leg out of commission. He's not up to his previous level of badassery, but still more than even elite mooks can handle.
  • An Ice Person: Kahyou and Rahyou have the Ice Style kekkei genkai.
  • Invincible Hero: Naruto's reputation has grown to such a degree many people think nothing can harm him. One Ice Style user is surprised their jutsu worked on one of Naruto's clones.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Rahyou threatens to kill the hostages if Naruto or something that looks like him shows up. With that in mind, Tsunade says to everyone who is involved with the Rescue Mission to not let Naruto sees them, for obvious reasons.
  • Made of Explodium: The Blue Powder the terrorists plans to use to destroy The Blood Prison.
  • One-Man Army: Naruto, and the whole world knows it. See above.
  • Passing the Torch: Tsunade is more than ready to retire from being Hokage, but Kakashi is not too eager to step up and take charge. Partly because he feels he isn't strong enough to protect everybody without the Lighting Blade.
  • Shock and Awe: Kakashi, as always. He replaces Raikiri, which is now too unsafe for him to use, with a new jutsu called "Purple Lightning".
