https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ray_white_anime.png
Voiced by: Jun'ya Enoki, Rie Kugimiya [child/"Lily White"] (Japanese), Kevin D. Thelwell, Kristen McGuire [child/"Lily White"] (English)

The titular Iceblade Sorcerer. Originally a child soldier raised by the few known members of the Seven Grand Sorcerers. After the end of the Far East War, he decides to enroll in Arnold Academy while hiding his identity, power and background. Despite most noble students looking down on him, he manages to find good friends.

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: He can literally cut through magic with a sword.
  • Accidental Pervert: He sees Amelia and Rebecca in their underwear when he walks into them as they're changing clothes.
  • Anti-Magic: By using the Antimaterial Code, he can effectively cancel all spells by reverting them back to Prima Materia.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: He looks incredibly cute when disguised as a girl. Many girls swoon at "Lily White"'s beauty.
  • Broken Ace: He's good at everything, except magic unless he releases his Power Limiter, but he's still troubled by his past as a Child Soldier and guilt over killing people in the war.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Ray is incapable of using sorcery unless he releases Lydia's Chronos Lock, but thanks to his military training and swordsmanship, there's not many people who can beat him even when he can't cast spells.
  • Caring Gardener: He joins the gardening club because he admires flowers.
  • The Charmer: He knows how to be a gentleman to women and easily makes them blush with his flattery.
  • Chaste Hero: He doesn't seem to realize the romantic implications in his interactions with his female friends and doesn't get even a little flustered when he sees them in their underwear.
  • Child Soldier: He willingly joined the military unit that raised him and fought in the Far East War when he was still a young child.
  • Chuunibyou: When he gets into Drill Sergeant Nasty mode, he wears a Cool Mask and demands to be called "Master White".
  • Clark Kent Outfit: His clothes make him look thin and hide his muscular physique.
  • Disguised in Drag: Ray disguises himself as a girl to infiltrate Diom Academy and meet Ariane.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: When preparing Amelia for the Sorcery Swordsman Tournament, Ray calls her "Recruit" and puts her through a torturous training every day as he yells insults, leaving her exhausted and wanting to run away from him.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: As the Iceblade Sorcerer, his hair color becomes a snowy white.
  • Elemental Weapon: He can create swords made of ice when using the power of the Iceblade Sorcerer.
  • Experienced Protagonist: By the start of the series, Ray has fought as a soldier in the Far East War and inherited the title of Iceblade Sorcerer from his teacher.
  • Eye Colour Change: When using the power of the Iceblade Sorcerer, his black eyes become blue.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Because of the Chronos Lock, he can only apply magic through his Inner Code and can't cast spells most of the time. He still can fight perfectly with a sword.
  • Gender-Concealing Voice: When disguised as a girl, Ray uses magic to alter his vocal cords and make his voice sound exactly like a girl's instead of a guy speaking in a falsetto voice.
  • Happily Adopted: He was adopted and raised by the soldiers who found him as a child. Ray considered the entire military unit to be his family.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: To show his role as The Hero, he wields swords as his main weapon in battle.
  • Hour of Power: He only uses the power of the Iceblade Sorcerer for emergencies because he can't remove the Chronos Lock for long without being at risk of Overheating and freezing himself.
  • An Ice Person: As the Iceblade Sorcerer, he can create massive spikes of ice as well as ice swords.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: He gains piercing blue eyes as well as ice magic when he's the Iceblade Sorcerer.
  • Ignore the Fanservice: He's completely unfazed as he nonchalantly apologizes for accidentally seeing Amelia and Rebecca in their underwear.
  • Inept Mage: Subverted. He seems to be bad at sorcery, but that's because the Chronos Lock spell limits his ability to use magic. He's actually one of the Seven Grand Sorcerers.
  • In-Series Nickname: Some of his classmates nivkname him "Withered Wizard" because they think he's a talentless and incompetent mage. Ray isn't bothered by it, though.
  • Invincible Hero: Ray is the most powerful sorcerer in the world. There is no enemy that can defeat him.
  • Jerkass to One: Ray is usually a very polite Nice Guy, except to Carol who he openly detests due to the trauma of her almost assaulting him in bed once. To his dismay, she becomes his homeroom teacher.
  • Legacy Character: He inherited the title and power of the Iceblade Sorcerer from his teacher, Lydia Ainsworth.
  • Military Brat: He was a war orphan who was taken in and adopted by soldiers, having been primarily raised by the previous Iceblade Sorcerer, Lydia Ainsworth.
  • Nice Guy: He's very polite, kind and friendly.
  • Oblivious to Love: He's very clueless to his female friends' romantic attraction to him, especially in the cases of Amelia and Rebecca.
  • The One Guy: He's the only male member of the gardening club.
  • Penny Among Diamonds: He's the only commoner in Arnold Academy, which causes most of the noble students to look down on him.
  • Phosphor-Essence: When he's fighting as the Iceblade Sorcerer, his body glows while releasing ice particles.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: His black hair turns white when he unleashes his true power as the Iceblade Sorcerer.
  • Power Limiter: Lydia placed the Chronos Lock on Ray to seal most of his magic power and keep him from overheating.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He joins the Environmental Research Club, consisting of tough and muscular men, and the Gardening Club, which only has girls as members. Ray enjoys the activities of both clubs and fits right in with the members of both.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: He feels guilty for the lives he took when fighting in the Far East War, wondering if a murderer like him has the right to have a happy school life with his new friends.
  • Snub by Omission: Whenever he meets the former members of his military unit, Ray omits acknowledging Carol's presence because he detests her.
  • Stock Light-Novel Hero: Ray is the only commoner in a Wizarding School for noblemen, but he's actually the successor of the Iceblade Sorcerer, one of the most powerful mages in the world, and his true power is so dangerous that he must have a Power Limiter in place because the last time his magic went out of control, he annihilated an entire battlefield. He's also pretty good at wooing women.
  • Super-Power Meltdown: During his last battle he suffered an Overheat, a loss of control of the Engram in his brain. The resulting ice explosion killed enough soldiers to end the Far East War.
  • Technical Pacifist: He always opts to seal dangerous foes in his Harmless Freezing Crystal Prison alive rather than killing them.
  • These Hands Have Killed: In his eyes, his hands are still tainted with the blood of all the soldiers he killed in the Far East War.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Due to the guilt for all the people he killed in the Far East War, Ray is extremely reluctant to kill.

  • Apathetic Teacher: In the manga, she lazes around when she should be teaching her students and lets her top student Amelia give classes in her place.
  • Asleep in Class: In the manga, even though she's the teacher, she makes Amelia teach the class while she takes a nap in a sleeping bag.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She makes herself look like a nice teacher, but is actually more than happy to kill her own students for her own magic research.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Her dark blue hair and pale skin add to her sinister character.
  • Inhuman Eye Concealers: She keeps her long bangs over her right eye to hide the symbol on her pupil.
  • Gender-Concealing Voice: Until she reveals her true colors, she conceals her identity by wearing a Black Cloak and altering her voice to sound like a man.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Her hair covers the right side of her face, signaling her as deceitful and two-faced.
  • The Mole: She passes herself as a teacher at Arnold Academy, but she's really working for the Eugenics to kidnap and kill students for their brains.
  • One-Winged Angel: After Ray drives her into a corner, she inserts a Eugenics scientific tool into her own brain and turns herself into a monster.
  • Playing with Fire: She uses offensive fire spells in her fight with Ray.
  • Starter Villain: She's the villain of Volume 1 where she forces Ray to reveal himself as the Iceblade Sorcerer and fight at his full potential for the first time since the Far East War.
  • Underestimating Badassery: She tremendously underestimates Ray as she seriously thinks she has the chance to beat him even after he reveals himself to be the Iceblade Sorcerer.
  • Villains Want Mercy: When Ray releases his Chronos Lock, Gray shamelessly begs Ray to spare her and offers him to join Eugenics. Thinking she has made him lower his guard, she tries to burn him alive, but she can't even leave a scratch on him.
  • Voice of the Legion: In her monster form, she gains an echo effect to her voice.
  • Wolverine Claws: Her monster form has long and sharp claws that she uses as a weapon.
