This is a partial character sheet for Kamen Rider Revice. Subjective trope and audience reactions should go on the YMMV page.

This page details tropes for Genta Igarashi and Vail from Kamen Rider Revice.

Warning: Due to the sheer number of spoilers associated with these characters, all spoilers are left un-marked. New viewers beware.

Tropes applying to both of them
  • Fusion Dance: After his final defeat, Vail is absorbed into Genta.
  • Walking Spoiler: The Reveal about them changes everything about we know in Revice.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Though "friends" may be a bit of a stretch, given that their interactions mostly consist of Vail making a comment and Junpei snapping at him to shut up, they were still partners during their tenure as Kamen Rider Vail... until Junpei decided to up and pursue his own happiness. Vail did not take it well, to say the very least.

    Tropes applying to Genta

Genta Igarashi (real name: Junpei Shiranami)/Kamen Rider Vail (I)/Kamen Rider Destream

Portrayed by: Shigeyuki Totsugi (live), Takuma Komori (suit)
Young Genta/Junpei Portrayed by: Masanari Wada (Revice Legacy)

When's my next mission?! Let me kill more demons already!
Junpei Shiranami

The patriarch of the Igarashi family. Initially appearing to be harmless and childish, he is actually one of the most important characters in the series. His true identity is revealed to be Junpei Shiranami, a demon hunter who — alongside his inner demon and partner Vail — became Kamen Rider Vail 25 years ago in order to avenge his parents' deaths.

He later has the Vail Driver modified into the Destream Driver, using it along with the Hercules Vistamp to transform into Kamen Rider Destream Hercules Genome.

Tropes applying to him in general

Patriarch of the Igarashi Family

  • Ambiguously Human: He somehow was able to survive without a human heart, as revealed in #16. #25 revealed that he was originally human, but was used by Masumi Karizaki as an experimental subject in order to perfect the Vistamps. Giff's cells was transplanted into his heart eventually allowing him to become the first Rider, Vail.
  • Amnesiacs are Innocent: A Manchild version. What little the audience is shown of Junpei Shiranami strongly suggests that he was an incredibly tortured and serious individual. Genta is... not.
  • Anti-Hero: Unscrupulous type. While acting as Kamen Rider Vail for the NOAH organization, Junpei was an uncontrollable berserker consumed by vengeance and concerned with little else.
  • Anti-Smother Love Talk: Unlike Yukimi, he fully supports Sakura becoming a Rider and manages to persuade her to let Sakura continue being one.
  • The Berserker: During his time as a Kamen Rider Vail, unlike his children who fight with style and precision, Junpei's fighting style involved dealing as much damage as possible by wailing at his targets and beating them into the ground. For that reason, every time he finished killing his targets his handlers would shock Junpei in the heart to stop him.
  • The Big Guy: His role in NOAH was just to use the Vail Driver to beat the tar out of demons and little else.
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: An embarrassing father, who is constantly on the lookout for any signs Sakura might have a boyfriend.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Genta has, at least twice, been possessed by Vail and made to try and kill his family. This after being orphaned at a young age by a demon — who turned out to be Vail himself, no less.
  • Bumbling Dad: A silly goofball trying out different challenges, tricks and records. Even his own children question why their mother married him. As is later revealed, she saw someone who needed to be saved and she did just that. This gets played with over the course of the show: when he gets his memories back, he returns to his gloomy and taciturn personality as Junpei Shiranami, but when the rest of the family calls him out on how unlike him it is once matters settle down, he admits it was an act due to the seriousness of the situations around him, and reverts to being his goofy self. However, any whiff of Vail being around or his family being in danger brings the serious side right back to the forefront, most prominently demonstrated when he takes on Vail in a brutal fight as Kamen Rider Destream and tries to get Daiji to stop stewing in self-righteousness.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He appears to be the Bumbling Dad at first, but he's arguably one of the most important characters in the setting of the series.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Usually an embarrassing, hammy goof in present time and his children tend to see him as The Load when it comes to dealing with pressing matters. On the other hand, he was capable of successfully wrestling control of his body back from Vail, used to be an executioner for an organization that experimented with creating demons, and is more than capable of going to toe-to-toe with Crimson Vail as Kamen Rider Destream despite the suit putting a gigantic strain on him to use.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: He leaves his family and goes into hiding in #28, because he's gradually losing control of himself now that Giff is close to being revived and is worried about what Vail might do if he regains control of his body again.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His parents were killed by his own inner demon and he was at death's door as a young man, causing Masumi Karizaki to inject his heart with Giff's cells to save his life, leading to him becoming a guinea pig and prototype soldier for the Vistamp system.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: His backstory makes him one for the Showa Riders. Junpei losing his family and being made into something other than human by a Nebulous Evil Organization doesn't lead to him becoming a noble hero of justice, but a destructive Anti-Hero and easily manipulated pawn by the very organization which "saved" his life, completely unaware they were the ones who killed his family in the first place. His salvation comes not in fighting evil, but meeting and falling in love with Yukimi and being able to have a normal life with her.
  • Defecting for Love: The main reason he left NOAH was because he had fallen in love with Yukimi.
  • Disappeared Dad/Missing Mom: Both his parents were killed by a crimson demon, who turned out to be his own partner. He ends up becoming this for his own kids, disappearing on them for a couple of episodes after Vail possessed him.
  • Discard and Draw: Uses the Destream Driver (an upgraded Vail Driver) and the Hercules Vistamp to become Kamen Rider Destream, after abandoning the Kabuto Vistamp in #42.
  • Drama Queen: To the point of treating his tooth cavity as though it were a terminal illness. Although the truth behind might be that he realized what they found out about him and had to create something else to divert everyone's attention.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: He goes through a lot, both in the backstory and the main series, but by the end Genta is able to successfully reconcile with his past life, put Vail to rest, and reunite with his wife and children.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has a scar on his chest, but no recollection of how he got it, however. It seems to be connected to his lack of a human heart, a memory he apparently blocked out. Revice Legacy reveals that he got this from NOAH performing surgery on him to implement Giff cells into his heart.
  • Happily Married: To Yukimi. She is the only one who finds his goofy nature endearing. Their children are often embarrassed by the ensuing Sickeningly Sweethearts antics.
  • Healing Factor: Possesses accelerated healing as shown in Part 2, courtesy of Giff's cells.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In #38, he undergoes surgery to transfer his Giff cells to the Giffard Rex Vistamp, even knowing that he would most likely not survive the attempt. Fortunately, he manages to barely make it out alive.
  • Hero of Another Story: He's the protagonist and eponymous Rider of the spinoff Revice Legacy: Kamen Rider Vail, though the "hero" part was initially more ambiguous.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: As Junpei, he was consumed by revenge to the point of ignoring collateral damage and getting innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. He himself gradually grew more disillusioned with having to fight demons day and night just to find some sort of relief. It wasn't until he met and fell in love with Yukimi that he was able to pull himself out and defect from NOAH.
    • One terrified civilian lumping Junpei in with the demons he fought and seeing his reflection as Vail caused Junpei to Freak Out and eliminate his target so brutally that several civilians were implied to have died from the resulting explosion.
  • Homage: The simplistic, bug-themed design of his Kamen Rider form and his backstory as a Phlebotinum Rebel who escaped from an evil organization is a throwback to the Kamen Riders of the Showa era.
  • Human-Demon Hybrid: All but stated to be an variant of this; while he is technically still a human, he also became a demon through having Giff's cells implemented into his dying body, resulting in his inner demon Vail being born from his own heart.
  • Hunter of Monsters: Spurred by the death of his parents, Junpei became an executioner for NOAH after getting injected with Giff's cells, tasked with eliminating any demons from NOAH's failed experiments.
  • Ignorance Is Bliss: Yukimi and Buu-san deliberately kept their silence regarding Genta's past as Junpei Shiranami/Kamen Rider Vail so he can have a peace of mind after all what happened in NOAH.
  • Innocence Lost: As Junpei continued to fight the failed experiments, his appearance got increasingly dirtier and grimier as a representation of him being consumed by rage against the demons.
  • Ironic Name: The kanji characters in his real given name stand for "purity" and "peace", respectively. The path of blood he walked to avenge his parents 25 years ago was anything but.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Junpei lost his memories during his escape from NOAH, whereupon he assumed his new identity of Genta Igarashi. As shown in #25, these memories can resurface during his possession by Vail, and he eventually gets them all back after a while.
  • Love Redeems: Meeting and falling in love with Yukimi was the one thing able to pull him out of his living hell as NOAH's executioner.
  • The Maiden Name Debate: Took Yukimi's surname when he married her, on account of having lost his own memory of his name.
  • Magic Plastic Surgery: Changed his face via cosmetic surgery in order to live his new life as Genta.
  • Meaningful Name: The first kanji character of his given name means "origin," while the second means "thick." It can be a reference to him being the father — ergo, the origin — of the three Igarashi sibling Riders. He is also the original Kamen Rider who used Vistamps and it's not his real name.
  • Monster Progenitor: The first Giff-Human hybrid thanks to NOAH experimenting on him by implementing Giff's cells into his dying body, and after falling in love with Yukimi Igarashi, he created a family that, unbeknownst to him, are also descendants of Giff.
  • Papa Wolf: He's able to fight off Vail's demonic possession and forcibly cancel their Rider transformation after the latter attempts to murder his children.
  • Parents as People: He deeply cares for his family and enjoys working at the bathhouse, but he has aspirations to become a popular content creator. This puts him at odds with his family at times, as he seems to be more focused on making viral videos than taking care of the business.
  • Phlebotinum Rebel: Converted into a Kamen Rider by NOAH so he could act as their executioner, but fled to be with the woman he loved instead.
  • Put on a Bus: The end of #28 has him go into hiding with Buu-san, having recovered his memories as Junpei. #32 reveals that he's hiding at Weekend's headquarters, though he eventually has to get on another bus after his fight with Crimson Vail in #42 to recover from the brutal fight.
  • Rage Breaking Point: #41, full stop. Genta was already pissed that Daiji is in still the clutches of Akaishi despite his hopes that him and Ikki would be able to reconcile. Then he and Yukimi discovered that Ikki and Vice have been hiding the pictures Ikki has been disappearing from, and was told of the contract that Ikki had gone through in order to stop Vail's rampage years ago. The final straw is when he sees Vail rampaging in the shelters in his bid to draw out his children, which spurs him into action.
  • Revenge: One of the main reasons for Junpei becoming Kamen Rider Vail was to avenge his parents' murder at the hands of a crimson demon.
  • Screaming Warrior: During his time with NOAH, Genta/Junpei was nearly always screaming when fighting the demons. Not surprising, given how he was The Berserker back then. #42 shows that he hasn't lost that trait.
  • Seppuku: Genta's transformation pose intentionally evokes this with him forcefully stamping down on the Vail and Destream Driver's Ohinjector as if gutting himself with a sword. It's made even more obvious with Destream's transformation, where insect wings burst out of his back the moment he stamps down, evoking a shower of blood.
  • Strong and Skilled: As Kamen Rider Destream, he combines his unmatched fighting experience from his time as Kamen Rider Vail with a massive power boost that makes him second only to Ultimate Revice. The result is that while Ikki and Vice still have a hard time defeating a dying Vail even with their Ultimate forms (though the fact killing Vail would kill Genta as well forces them to hold back), Genta fights evenly and wins against the powered up Crimson Vail.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Upon waking up without any memories of his former life as Junpei or his tenure as Kamen Rider Vail, he just rolls with Yukimi's claim that they were a married couple without any doubt.
  • Split-Personality Merge: In a sense, his Junpei and Genta personalities merged after he made peace with his past. He still retains the latter's goofy and overdramatic persona, but when his family is in danger of he tends to erupt in angry outbursts like the former, as shown in #41. However, in #42 he easily admits that he is no longer the same vengeance-driven young man as Junpei, and is now just Genta Igarashi.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Behaves in a rather saccharine manner towards Yukimi in #8, much to Sakura's chagrin.
  • That Man Is Dead: Declares in #42 that he is no longer Junpei Shiranami, but Genta Igarashi.
  • Tired of Running: After years of trying to avoid his past as a Kamen Rider, Genta is now determined to make things right as he can't bear that his family is being ripped apart and Vail making things worse, as well as Vail nearing his death could spell his own death due to their synchronization. He approaches George to ask him for a new Driver.
  • Transhuman: The regenerative properties of the Giff cells implanted into his dying body not only healed and strengthened him to the point that he could become a Rider without getting killed by the Vistamps, but also altered his genetic information so much that even his children inherited some portion of Giff’s demonic traits.
  • Vengeance Feels Empty: Implied. He's fought and destroyed who knows how many demons while under NOAH's thumb, but it's made blatantly clear that Junpei felt little to no satisfaction and saw destroying demons more as stress relief than anything.
  • We Named The Dog Indiana: Yukimi named him Genta after a stray dog she used to keep as a child.
  • You Are Number 6: He was dubbed "Subject 071" during his time in NOAH.

Tropes exclusive to him as Kamen Rider Destream

Destream Driver Voiced by: Shingo Fujimori, Kenjiro Tsudanote

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krre_destreamhercules.png
Spirit Up! Slash! Sting! Spiral! Strong! Kamen Rider Destream!

  • Blue Is Heroic: His armor is mostly blue, and he is firmly on the heroes' side.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Notably, the Destream Driver is the only Vail Driver related system to not use Vail's voice.
  • Finishing Move:
    • Destream Finish:
      • Hercules Genome: Destream charges energy into his fist and does a running Rider Punch, before unleashing a side kick charged with cyan energy in the shape of a Hercules beetle head, which then spins like a drill and strikes the enemy. The next then explodes in cyan lightning.
  • Fire-Breathing Weapon: The Komodo Dragonic Heat, a gauntlet granted via the Kamen Rider Ryuki-themed Komodo Dragon Vistamp.
  • Fun with Acronyms: The DX Destream Driver differentiates between Vistamps classified as "Another" and "Extra," and will produce unique sounds when trying to transform with them that start with the same letters as those words. All other Vistamps will produce another sound that starts with "V;" coupled with Destream's original jingle, lining up all four lines abbreviates them to "SAVE."
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: His transformation sequence has insect wings sprouting from his back.
  • Japanese Beetle Brothers: He is themed on a Hercules beetle, which is considered an "upgraded" rhinoceros beetle.
  • Light Is Good: Destream has a white Rider suit, and he is one of the good guys.
  • Mickey Mousing: While transforming into Destream, the Driver's screen animates in time with the words and music in Destream's jingle: the screen filling up with blue dots (the musical flourish in the beginning), it being cut in half ("slash"), red and white dots flowing up in the shape of a needle ("sting"), the dots coalescing into a swirl, ("spiral"), and finally a red burst ("strong.")
  • Power Fist: The Kong Astro Breakers, granted via the Kamen Rider Fourze-themed Kong Vistamp.
  • Spell My Name With An S:
    • His name has been debated between "Destream" and "Deathstream". Official materials has the former being spelled out.
    • His primary Vistamp's name has also been debated between "Hercules" and "Heracles".note
  • Spider Limbs: His Herclaws, six beetle legs on his back armor that he can extend and use to attack, similarly to Demons' Spider Genome.
  • Super Prototype: The Destream Driver is not fully complete, if the warning message saying "Construction in Progress" that pops up during its standby is any indication, but even in this state it's enough to overwhelm and defeat Vail.
  • Superior Successor: Destream is the successor to Vail, Demons, and Over Demons, and far stronger than all of them without any need to rely on a demon's power. He also has unlimited access to the Genomix system and is much safer to use than Kamen Rider Vail, with the only caveat being immense physical strain on its user. In fact, the only Demonic Riders who eclipse him in power are Revi and Vice in their Ultimate forms and Kamen Rider Juuga.
  • This Is a Drill: The Croco Wizarolling, granted via the Kamen Rider Wizard-themed Crocodile Vistamp.

    Tropes applying to Vail

Demon Vail/Kamen Rider Vail (II)/Crimson Vail

Portrayed by: Kenjiro Tsuda (voice), Danki Sakae (suit, demon form/Crimson Vail)

The Crimson Demon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krre_crimsonvail.png
Crimson Up! Crimson Vail!

I am Vail. I will assist your vengeance against the demon who killed your parents, as your Buddy.

A demon born from Masumi Karizaki's experiments and bonded to Genta/Junpei. He fought alongside Junpei before the latter's defection from NOAH, following which he was extracted from his host and imprisoned within the Demons Driver.

For tropes relating to the Demons Driver, see his section under Fenix.
  • Ambiguous Situation: While at first it seemed Vail was born from Genta himself, it is implied that he's the "crimson demon" that killed his parents to begin with, which leaves it ambiguous of whether he's Genta's inner demon or something else entirely. Revice Legacy and #30 and #31 of the main show reveal that he did indeed murder them on NOAH's orders, with the surgery and subsequent binding to the Vail Driver only making him Genta's "inner demon" In Name Only.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Technically with Vice, Kagero, and Lovekov, seeing how they're the siblings' inner demons while he's their father's. He even calls himself Vice's "father" in #34, though Vice rebuffs him.
  • Berserk Button: Usually a patient and erudite demon, he turns violent and aggressive whenever the chance to hurt his partner and anyone related to him comes up.
  • Big Bad Friend: To Genta in Revice Legacy: Vail. He acts helpful to Genta and goads him into being angry to get revenge on the demon who killed his parents, all while keeping from him that he was that demon.
  • Big Red Devil: His demon form is red-accented.
  • Break Them by Talking: What makes Vail a formidable adversary isn't just the fact that he's a powerful demon, but also the fact that he tries to destroy his targets' spirits as well.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Has betrayed every single one of his hosts, though he’d argue that when it comes to Genta, he’s just doling out some Laser-Guided Karma. Revice Legacy shows that Genta is completely justified in erasing Vail.
  • Dark Is Evil: Has a predominantly black body like Vice. Unlike Vice, he genuinely is evil.
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: Vail's name is similar to Bael, the name of one of the seven demon princes in demonology. This is fitting, as he was (possibly) born directly from Giff's cells implanted in Junpei/Genta's heart, in a sense making him Giff's son.
  • Demonic Possession: Due to having Giff's cells injected into Junpei/Genta's heart, he can possess him after exiting the Demons Driver.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: Few could have guessed that the Demons Driver would turn out to be such an important player in the events of the series.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: As of #31 he's taken to serving Akaishi and Giff for the time being, but is still concerned with satiating his bloodlust and getting back at Genta more than anything else.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: His true form first appears in a flashback in Part 1 of the Vail miniseries, weeks before it shows up in Revice itself and before it's even revealed to be Vail.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Vice, both being demons both from a member of the Igarashi family. The difference being that while Vice is friendly and helpful to his host, Vail is determined to make life worse for Genta out of spite. He even has red lines around his body, the opposite to Vice's blue, with his Crimson Vistamp being a red repaint of the Rolling Vistamp.
  • Evil Former Friend: To Genta/Junpei. While he may have been compassionate to him during Junpei's time as an executioner for NOAH, once he defected from the organization along with Masumi Kazaraki, he did not take it well.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: He's a sadistic demon bent on making his host's life a living hell, and has a deep, husky voice, courtesy of Kenjiro Tsuda. His voice had a much lighter tone 25 years ago.
  • Facepalm Of Doom: In #25, he grabs a Gifftarian by the face, lifts it off the ground, and crushes its head with one hand.
  • Fallen Hero: To a degree. He was forced to fight for his jailers against antagonistic demon forces, and while he’s still fine with doing that, he’s now expanded the scope of his wrath to everyone around him.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He seems very compassionate towards Junpei at first, proclaiming himself as his "Buddy" and offering to help him get his revenge on the crimson demon, only for him to drop the mask when Junpei decides to defect. And then #30 and #31 reveal that he is the crimson demon.
  • Finishing Move: Crimson Vail can charge the Crimson Vail Vistamp to do finishing attacks.
    • Crimson Impact: Crimson Vail charges the Crimson Vistamp with red and black energy before using it it deliver a slash of crimson paint to the opponent.
    • Crimson Finish: Crimson Vail charges the Crimson Vistamp with red energy before using it to deliver a running punch to the opponent. Afterward, he turns to face his opponent again and his lower leg is covered in red energy as crimson paint flows into it. Crimson Vail then delivers a side kick to the enemy, with his leg now emanating additional crimson and black energy similar to fire. The kick creates several waves of red energy upon impact.
  • Forced to Watch: A variant. He possessed Genta into setting fire to the family bathhouse in an attempt to kill his family all out of spite. In present day he possesses Genta again to make him become Kamen Rider Vail again and kill his children, but Genta is able to resist Vail's influence.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Fights without transforming into a Rider or suiting up in any way. He's still able to match Revice Thunder Gale in might.
  • Gone Horribly Right: The point of putting him in the Vail Driver in the first place was to weaponize demons as part of NOAH's experiments and ultimately ended up in Genta's possession after an experiment fused Giff's cells with his heart to save him. Good news is, they got an incredibly powerful warrior, bad news is he's a sadistic demon hell-bent on making his former partner's life hell.
  • He Who Must Not Be Seen: He initially only manifests as a pair of purple eyes through the Demons and Vail Drivers, and later as a reddish-black orb of energy or via possessing his host like Kagero. His true demon form is eventually revealed in episodes 30 and 31.
  • Horrifying the Horror: One of the Gifftarians he's demolishing in his debut visibly reacts with fear as Vail marches towards it.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: Originally served as a counter measure during NOAH's experiments, he was used to kill any demon which went out of control.
  • Identical Grandson: His true form resembles his progeny Vice, with red and purple in place of the latter's white and blue.
  • It Can Think: Unlike the inner demons of the Igarashi siblings, Vail is fully independent of his host and capable of acting on his own, providing his power to anyone who uses the Demons Driver. He just prefers Genta as a host. The implication (and later confirmation) he's the crimson demon that killed Genta's parents leaves it ambiguous what he is.
  • It's Personal: Has an axe to grind with Genta for betraying and attempting to erase him from his history after he defected from NOAH.
Vail: I will rob you of every last drop of happiness. Consider it the price for betraying me.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Vail revealing himself within the Demons Driver is one of the things that contributes more to the show's Cerebus Syndrome (#14 and #21 already did this) and leads to the first apparent Character Death. Once he's actually unleashed, he reveals the Dark Secret behind the Igarashi Family.
  • The Last Dance: Seeks one final fight with Junpei/Genta in #42, knowing full well that he doesn't have much time left.
  • Last Words: Before his absorption into Genta, who states that he has forgiven him:
"I see... you're not the man I once sought vengeance with. (...) Well, I don't forgive you. And I never will."
  • Living on Borrowed Time: Turns out his last fight with Junpei 25 years ago left him on the brink of death; he only survived due to Giff's intervention, and has to rely on Vistamps to stay alive. As shown with his body breaking down with increasing frequency in #41-onwards, he's rapidly approaching his limit.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Killed Junpei's parents and then used his fury over it to manipulate him into becoming an ideal host he could possess to rampage and satiate his bloodlust.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Vail's name is similar to Bael; according to demonology, Bael was one of the seven demon princes of the Underworld. Bael is also described as possessing the power to garner favor of others, something the Demons Driver allows only for Bael to be pursuing his own goals and likely stab them in the back. This is even more fitting, as Vail was (possibly) born directly from Giff's cells implanted in Genta Igarashi's heart, in a sense making him Giff's son. In addition, the primary Vistamp of Kamen Rider Demons is an allusion to one of Bael's forms, which has the legs of a spider.
    • According to an interview in Spacecraft 176 2022, his name is derived from the word "vail", which can mean "submission".
  • Monster Progenitor: As Junpei/Genta had Giff's cells injected into his heart and the two were bonded before his children were born, Vail is the progenitor of Vice, Lovekov, and Kagero's specific type of demon.
  • More Despicable Minion: Much worse than Akaishi, given his unrepentant love of killing people and the extremely petty and sadistic lengths he goes to in order to get revenge on Genta.
  • Never My Fault: Blames Genta for breaking their partnership apart and uses that as both an excuse to hunt down his family and an example to break Vice... While he ignores the fact that he was the one who killed Genta's parents, leading to the breakup in the first place.
  • Nominal Hero: Even while he was slaying demons for NOAH, he was in it to satiate his bloodlust and little else.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: He speaks in clipped, rote phrases, and feigns subservience without complaint while in the Demons Driver. Once he's fed on Hiromi enough and had his vessel upgraded by George, he reveals that he’s entirely sapient and has his own agenda that he can now pursue with his recouped strength.
  • Offhand Backhand: He grabs a Gifftarian's tail in this manner when it tries to attack him from behind, proceeding to crush it to a pulp.
  • Organ Autonomy: The fact he was born from Junpei/Genta's heart being infused with Giff's cells, and Genta lacks a heart until Vail possesses him again, strongly implies that Vail is Genta's heart or at least merged with it.
  • Our Demons Are Different: Vail seemingly has zero actual need for a host or at the very least isn't bound to a single person, implying he might be akin to Giff and Diablo, the only two other demons to share this quality, rather than an inner demon. This seems to be because rather than being born like most demons, he may have been born directly from Giff's cells.
  • Outside-Context Problem: It isn't until many episodes after the Demons Driver's introduction that it's revealed there's an actual demon inside of it, and one who has nothing to do with the Deadmans. Even afterwards, most of the threat seems to come from Olteca rather than Vail, with even Olteca unaware that Vail is just using him. It isn't until Vail is actually unleashed that anyone becomes aware of how gigantic of a threat he actually is.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Part 5 of Revice Legacy has him run Agariyama through with his bare hand.
  • Phlebotinum Dependence: Once it's revealed that Vail's body is starting to break down, it's strongly implied that the power absorbed from Vistamps he's stamped with are one of the few things keeping him alive. However, even this begins rapidly losing its effectiveness, to the point that an entire briefcase full of Vistamps can only keep him stable for a few hours at most and a single Vistamp barely helps him last a few minutes.
  • Power Copying: For some reason, he's able to copy some of the Vistamps' abilities when being stamped with one, as shown in his fight with Ikki and Vice in Episode 33 and later on:
    • Megalodon: Gains an purple version of the Divine Fins, and can launch sharp teeth and perform energy kicks as well.
    • Kong: Vail can launch energy gauntlets.
    • Eagle: Vail is granted wings to fly with.
    • Lion: Creates a pair of claws from fire, and can throw purple-colored fireballs.
    • Kamakiri: Gains an purple version of the Kamakiric Arrow.
    • Kujaku: Vail summons energy feathers to use them either as projectiles, shields, or as a punch enchantment.
    • Spider: Vail can use silk to restrain his target.
    • Brachio: Vail can extend his arms to use them as a whip against his opponents, and can produce shockwaves as well.
    • Turtle: Vail fires an energy artillery shell from his mouth.
    • Hashibiroko: Vail is able to use the end of his tail as a scythe.
    • Buffalo: Vail gains Super-Speed.
    • Tricera: Vail can fire a barrage of energy horns from his hands, and can conjure horns made of earth from the ground.
  • Power Fist: Like Jack Revice with the Rolling Vistamp, he can use the Crimson Vistamp as a knuckleduster.
  • Prehensile Tail: He's able to use his tail as a whip.
  • Purple Is Powerful: One of the most powerful demons seen to date, with purple eyes and aura to match.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Or rather, "The Reason Your Dad Sucks Speech"; while clearly referring to Genta, it's Young Ikki to whom he says it as he burns down the bathhouse in #25:
"A vile man who betrayed and tried to erase me, his partner. That is your father's true face."
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Unlike Vice, Vail is red rather than blue, befitting his vicious and sadistic personality.
  • Redemption Rejection: After Genta defeats him in their final battle, Vail rejects his offer to reconcile, as he'd rather be sealed within Genta permanently than ever put aside his hatred of him.
  • Revenge by Proxy: As the main reason Genta left NOAH was to start a family with Yukimi, Vail seeks to get revenge on him by hurting his loved ones.
  • Sadist: Vail enjoys harming others for the heck of it, especially if it'll make Genta suffer.
  • Scary Teeth: Unlike Vice, who keeps it conveniently covered up by his face mask, Vail doesn't even bother to cover it up, letting everyone see how horrifying they are.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: He was imprisoned inside the Demons Driver, with what is implied to be George "unlocking its full power" setting him free.
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: After his final defeat, he's sealed back inside of Genta with Genta in charge.
  • Shadow Archetype: To Vice — and to a lesser extent, Kagero. Both demons were driven by a desire to help their hosts to some degree, while Vail just wants to have fun killing things.
  • Spell My Name With An S: His name was debated between "Bael", "Veil" and "Vail", until it was confirmed to be the third.
  • Spikes of Villainy: His Crimson Vail form, like Jack Revice, has spikes on his left side.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: Eventually turns against NOAH by having Junpei press both sides of the Vail driver to unleash him, killing several wounded NOAH soldiers in the process.
  • Villain Team-Up: Gives Orteca the power to transform into Demons, until deeming him an unworthy user and leaving to possess Genta again.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • In Revice Legacy Part 5, Vail loses his cool when Junpei ultimately defies him and chooses Yukimi over him.
"All this, for a mere human?! If we had worked together, we could've ruled this damn world!"
    • #41 has him reduced to a snarling, wildly flailing mess after he learns that he doesn't have long to live.
  • Wild Card: Vail doesn't seem to care if Giff is revived or have any relation to the Deadmans at all. He helps Hiromi fight them, only to consume the latter's life energy. However, once he jumps ship to Olteca, he still holds back and ultimately just abandons Olteca without warning. Vail seems to have his own agenda he's pursuing independently of everyone else.
  • Would Hit a Girl: In #25, not only does he swat Aguilera aside without batting an eyelid, he also actively attempts to kill Sakura.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Vail attempted to murder the Igarashi siblings when they were children, solely to hurt Genta.
  • Yandere: He's psychotically obsessed with reuniting with Genta, wanting to murder his loved ones and destroy his current life at the bathhouse in revenge for leaving Vail and their life as a Rider behind.
  • You Killed My Father: #30 and #31, as well as Part 3 of Revice Legacy, reveal him to be the very same "crimson demon" who killed Junpei's parents.

Bane up! Hakai! (Break.) Sekai! (Broke.) Kikikaikai! (Broken.)note  Kamen! (Rider.) Vail!

The shared Rider Form of Junpei/Genta and Vail, accessed using the Vail Driver and the Kabuto Vistamp.

  • All There in the Manual: According to the DX Vail Driver, the Vail Driver does not have a Rider Troop function unlike its successor. Instead, trying to use it like this gives Vail the equivalent of a Genomix, called a Sacrifice. Notably, the regular method of initiating a Genomix is eschewed, leaving only this more efficient method.
  • Badass Cape: He has a cape over his right shoulder based on the wings of a rhinoceros beetle.
  • Destructive Savior: Back when he was a good guy, Vail's Finishing Moves tend to cause a great deal of destruction while taking down demons.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Kamen Rider Vail's design has a rhinoceros beetle grabbing onto his right shoulder with its horn attaching at his chin and going up the left side of his head, while its wings form a shoulder cape.
  • Finishing Move: Similarly to the Demons Driver, by pressing the Vistamp against the Vail Driver's pad before hitting the Vailing Knocks on the sides.
    • Vailing Impact: Has three variations.
      • Vail delivers a barrage of rapid-fire punches wreathed in dark crimson energy to the enemy before finishing them off with a devastating Rider Punch. In the first (shown) instance of this finisher, Vail actually hits his target with just the air bursts of his barrage of punches.
      • Vail delivers a roundhouse kick, as an energy construct of a rhinoceros beetle forms behind him and attacks the enemy.
      • Vail charges his fist with crimson energy that takes the form of a giant rhinoceros beetle and delivers a Rider Punch to the enemy.
    • Vailing Nova: Has two variations.
      • Vail coats his fists with energy and delivers a one-two punch to the enemy.
      • Vail unleashes a side kick wreathed in energy that takes the form of a giant rhinoceros beetle.
  • Hero's Evil Predecessor: To Kamen Rider Demons, who used a driver modelled on his own.
  • Japanese Beetle Brothers: He is themed on a rhinoceros beetle.
  • Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards: The Vail Driver itself. It's incredibly strong and has room to grow in the form of Sacrifices, but the growth of all of the other Rider systems (and Vail himself) eventually render it pointless since it's hard-wired to be incapable of advancing beyond Kamen Rider Vail's suit.
  • Mechanical Muscles: The Vail suit is equipped with artificial muscles that wrap around the user's body to grant them superhuman strength. It does not, however, take the user's durability into account and can cause serious injures to the user, which explains why Vail opted to use the air bursts of his Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs to hit the Gifftarian he was fighting instead of directly punching it when performing the Vailing Impact in #25.
  • Mickey Mousing: If you look closely at the Vail Driver's screen during Vail's standby, you'll notice it's pulsing irregularly instead of on a fixed rhythm. However, every individual pulse corresponds to a single note in Vail's standby sound.
  • Mythology Gag:
  • Ominous Visual Glitch: The DX Vail Driver recreates the sequence of him being ejected from it, which causes the screen to flicker between his eyes, the Kabuto Vistamp, the effects of Kamen Rider Vail's Transformation Sequence and finishers, and the colors of the Hercules Vistamp.
  • Psycho Prototype: The very first demonic Rider, with one of its users being a psychopathic, sadistic demon bent on making his host's life hell, not to mention that initially Junpei had a fighting style that involved doing as much damage as possible without regards to others.
  • Red Is Violent: His attacks have a dark crimson aura, befitting his brutal fighting style.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: Likely due to the fact that he was the first Rider and not designed by George, Vail's suit is notably more plain and obviously mechanical than his successors. This does nothing to prevent him from tearing through Gifftarians like they were made of wet tissue paper.
  • Super Prototype: He's the first of the demonic Riders, and dwarfs all the others in power. Additionally, the Vail Driver served as the basis for the Demons Driver, with the stats shown to surpass Kamen Rider Demons by a gigantic margin.
  • Vibration Manipulation: Kamen Rider Vail has powerful telekinetic abilities which he can use to create shockwaves. He can also channel the shockwaves to seemingly "glitch" in and out of the plane of existence.
