Grimms Notes

    Ex

Ex (エクス)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/exp.png
Hero

Classes: Wild Crest
Weapon: Märchen Flugel (メルヒェン・フリューゲル)
Voiced by: Ryōta Ōsaka, Hisako Tojo (Child, Anime), Drew Barber (English)

Owner of a "Blank Tome", Ex is a young man living in a Story Zone with no idea what lies in his future. One day, he encountered Reina and the others, and thus began his journey to grasp his destiny with his hands. Able to connect with any Heroes' Soul, he possesses the "Wild Crest".

  • All Just a Dream: The mini sidestory 4 Million Downloads Commemoration turns out to be just a dream Ex was having in the middle of a forest.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He is a nice guy, but do not cross him or threaten anyone he loves, he will awaken a huge power in order to protect them. Loki learns this the hard way in Episode 12 of the anime.
  • Character Catchphrase: "I will put an end to this nightmare!"
  • Chick Magnet: He sure has a lot of suitors, ranging from the females in his team to even the Main Characters of the Story Zones he visits.
  • Childhood Friends: With his version of Cinderella.
  • Declaration of Protection: Gives one to Reina in their heart-to-heart in the Looking Glass World Story Zone, before being interrupted by Tao and Shane.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Due to being given a Blank Tome, Ex has no idea what his role in the Story Zone is due to lacking a pre-defined fate and is having an existential crisis over it. He eventually found his calling in taking down Chaos Tellers after meeting Reina and the whole Chaos Teller fiasco in the Cinderella Story Zone.
  • Despair Event Horizon: The death of Fam crushes him so hard that it leaves him grieving for a whole side story. The following end line summarizes it.
Ex: I have lived my whole life without knowing what true despair is. And today, for the first time in my life, I learned what despair is.
  • Death Wail: Ex's reaction when it dawns on him that Fam kicked the bucket.
  • Eleventh Hour Super Power: Connects to Ludwig Grimm, a Storyteller, during his final fight against Loki and Jaberwocky in the anime.
  • Gender Bender: In the anime, his transformations always seem to be female characters, with the exception of Ludwig Grimm and Jack.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: While Ex is his canon name, the game can elect to have players name him what they want.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Ex wields a wooden one and most of his heroes in the anime are derived from the Attacker class, all of whom wield swords.
  • Informed Ability: In the anime, Ex's ability to connect with any kind of hero. In the game, this translates to Ex using any hero regardless of their class while everyone else is limited to heroes of 2 classes. In the anime, he is only seen using heroes of the Attacker class, maining Alice and Snow White while in only 3 occasions using heroes of the Defender class, Alice (Summer) and Jeanne d' Arc, the classes used eventually being the only ones available to him in Repage after joining Revol. Ex is never seen connecting with heroes of the Healer and Shooter class.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Ex has a thing for his childhood friend Cinderella, and this factors into his decision to leave his Story Zone with Reina and co. because he doesn't want to take away her happy ending despite having the capability to romance her because of his Blank Tome.
  • Jack of All Stats / Master of All: How his Wild Crest is described to work: Ex can connect with virtually every hero in his disposal regardless of job class while the others are more restrictive of which hero they can connect to depending on what job class they specialize in. For Example
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: He seems to inherit the personality of the character he transforms into, as he acts like he was always a girl when he becomes Alice.
  • Naïve Newcomer: As he was the most recent guy to join Reina's original party, Ex lacks the experience outside his own Story Zone the other three have. Lampshaded by Shane, who constantly calls him the new kid.
  • Nice Guy: Ex is a very friendly and generous person with nary a mean bone in his body.
  • Put on a Bus: There is exactly one chapter where Ex is completely absent, forcing his companions to save the day without him. It is the side story The King's Dream, the Moment of Awakening, where Ex is left mourning Fam. He gets better and back into action in the following main chapter thanks to the counsel of Guinevere and Morgan.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Ex is the viewpoint character of the story with a unique power, but the narrative is more focused on Reina's crusade.
  • Unique Protagonist Asset: Ex's Wild Crest, which allows him to connect to any and all heroes while everyone else is limited to heroes of 2 classes. Repage has him lose this power as a Blank Tome user, but at this point, Ex is no longer the protagonist.
  • Wooden Katanas Are Even Better: Ex carries one around, and is shown to be proficient in wielding it outside of fighting villains and Chaos Tellers.

Repage Tropes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ex2p.png
Classes: Attacker/Defender

  • Big Damn Heroes: In Prometheus' Story Zone, he connects with Machina Prince (somehow) just in time to get rid of the monsters summoned by Baron Munchausen, and saves the party.
  • Eye Colour Change: After his Heel–Face Turn, they go from red to yellow.
  • Mirror Match: The event Dorothea's Trial Part 1 culminates in a fight between him and his Prometheus self. Though gameplay-wise, you can bring anyone to the fight itself.
  • Redemption Demotion: Lacks all of the powers he had as Prometheus outside of connection and even loses the power of the Wild Crest when he joins Levol as a Blank Tome wielder.

    Reina

Reina (レイナ)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reinap.png
Hero
Classes: Healer/Attacker
Weapon: Miniature Garden's Kingdom (箱庭の王国)
Voiced by: Reina Ueda, Stephanie Komure (English)

An owner of a Blank Tome and the Shaman of Attunement, Reina travels around Story Zones taking down Chaos Tellers and restoring the balance that was disrupted in their wake.

  • Arch-Enemy: Loki, since he was the one who razed her Story Zone to the ground. The feeling is mutual on Loki's end after she got in his way one too many times.
  • Ascended Fangirl: Reina is a huge fangirl of Alice, and gets to connect with her idol in the Wonderland and Looking Glass Story Zones in the anime, or deliberately invoke this trope in the original game by connecting Reina with any of Alice's forms (except with, you know, her Defender and Shooter forms).
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Reina usually does not take it well when Ex interacts with other females.
  • Freudian Excuse: Her journey to take down Loki and save Story Zones from villains is because her own was destroyed before her very eyes, and wants to prevent that from happening to everybody else.
  • It's Personal with the Dragon: While Reina wants to rid the worlds of Chaos Tellers and stop the Fortem Cult, she REALLY has it out for Loki and wants him gone the most.
  • The Leader: Arguably shares this position with Tao. A type 2, Reina is usually the one who calls the shots in the group and leads the fight against the Chaos Tellers.
  • No Sense of Direction: She has the tendency to get lost in situations which can be an inconvenience to the group, which Tao and Shane poke fun at at times.
  • Reset Button: One of Reina's powers as the Shaman of Attunement; everything in the Story Zone returns to how it is before the Chaos Teller came by, but anyone killed beforehand won't return to life.
  • Sole Survivor: Reina and Shane managed to run away from Ex's massacre of the party. Unlike Shane though, she never joins Revol in his quest.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Shane's Tomboy.
  • Tsundere: Type B. While she is kind and caring to everyone, her tsuntsun side comes out when she either gets annoyed by Tao's antics, or if anyone questions her feelings for Ex.
  • White Magician Girl: Reina's hero setup.

    Tao

Tao (タオ)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/taop.png
Second clothes
Hero
Classes: Defender/Shooter
Weapon: Peach Demon Axe (桃鬼斧)
Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi, Joe Hernandez (English)

The self-proclaimed leader of the "Tao Family", and an owner of a Blank Tome. Tao is pretty headstrong and courageous figure who accompanies Reina in her journey to stop the Chaos Tellers alongside his sister Shane.

  • Berserk Button: Has a few.
    • Don't you ever dare to harm his beloved Tao's Family. Chaos Jim got beaten up for it.
    • Can't either stand Ungrateful Bastards. He got really pissed at the Frog Prince for dismissing Heinrich even when the latter was a very loyal servant.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Is this towards Ex and Shane. Tao tries to become one towards Momotaro when they enter his Story Zone because of his loyalty to Momotaro (Predecessor)'s memory.
  • The Big Guy: Serves as the main tank due to his affinity to heroes of the Defender class.
  • The Leader: Types 3 and 4.
  • The Mole: Tao turns out to secretly be in contact with the Fortem Cult, leaking Reina's movements to them.
  • My Greatest Failure: As he admitted to Momotaro, Tao failed to protect his version of Momotaro (Predecessor), who sacrificed himself to save him from certain doom after a battle went wrong.
  • Playing with Fire: As a hero, his element of choice is fire.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: After Tao rejoins the party after his Face–Heel Turn, he wears clothing similar to what Momotaro (Predecessor) wore, down to the peach accents in his armor.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: When the group was cornered by the Jaberwocky, Tao and Shane stay behind to fend it off while Ex takes Reina away to someplace safe. They end up surviving thanks to the March Hare (Looking Glass) and the Mad Hatter (Looking Glass).

    Shane

Shane (シェイン)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shanep.png
Hero
Classes: Shooter/Attacker
Weapon: (試作鬼弓吉備丸零号)
Voiced by: Miyu Kubota, Jessica Rau (English)

Tao's younger sister and fellow Blank Tome holder. Like her brother, Shane joins Reina in her quest to take down Loki and the Chaos Tellers.

  • Big Brother Worship: Shane really looks up to Tao after he essentially adopted her, and became her primary traveling companion before the two meet Reina.
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: As a hero, Shane wields a bow, reflecting on her primary class as a Shooter. Her secondary class is an Attacker, and she does get to wield one in the future. See Katanas Are Better in the Repage section.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has a dry sense of humor in every situation she comes across.
  • Gun Nut: Courtesy of the anime. Shane is knowledgeable of almost every weapon she comes across, and her eyes light up when she examines the rifle left behind by the Huntsman in the Red Riding Hood Story Zone. Her game counterpart is none like that.
  • Ms. Exposition: In the game, she is the one to explain the crafting and weapon enhancing mechanics to the player(Ex) at a certain point, tying to her expertise in weaponry.
  • The Nicknamer: Gives one to almost every person she comes across. Tao is some variation of bro, Reina is Boss (Ane-go in Japanese), and Ex is the New Guy.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Reina's girly girl.

Repage Tropes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shane2p.png
Classes: Attacker/Shooter

  • Katanas Are Better: Shane now wears one on her belt. Fittingly, Attackers became her main class when she joined Revol's party.
  • Mentor Archetype: To Tim since he was a child.
  • Older and Wiser: Having lived for a long time and survive the difficult journey she and Ex's party had to go through, her personality became way more mature and calmer.
  • Sole Survivor: She and Reina managed to escape from Ex's massacre of the party. 100 years later, she ends up joining with Revol's group.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Wears one of Tao's accessories.
  • Younger Than They Look: Due to being an Oni, her appearance didn't change much since back in the first chapter. She's merely a bit taller.

    Adah

Adah (エイダ)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adahp.png
Hero
Classes: Defender/Healer
Weapon: White Guardian (ホワイト・ガーディアン)
Voiced by: Yukiyo Fujii, Rebeka Thomas (English)

A knight wandering around Story Zones that Ex and co. encounters whom possesses a Blank Tome.

  • Dub Name Change: Eidah in the Global release.
  • Knight In Shining Armour: Was a knight guarding a princess in her original Story Zone, and still displays the chivalry of one in her travels to other Story Zones.
  • Older Than They Look: Adah spent at least 100 years guarding her princess while she peacefully slumbers, but you can't really tell that from a glance. Naturally, she has a complex over this.
  • Permanently Missable Content: Adah as a leader can only be obtained after finishing her character event.

    Fam

Fam (ファム)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/famp.png
Hero

Classes: Healer/Shooter
Weapon: (硝子細工の魔女)
Voiced by: Yuu Serizawa, Julie Park (English)

Known as Pam internationally, Fam is a self-proclaimed witch whom Reina was acquainted with in the past who holds a Blank Tome. Fam bears an uncanny resemblance to Ex's childhood friend Cinderella.

    Clovis

Clovis (クロヴィス)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clovisp.png
Hero
Classes: Attacker/Defender
Weapon: (ローゼン・シュヴァリエ)
Voiced by: Kengo Kawanishi, David Asher (English)

An orphan under the employ of Bluebeard who possesses a Blank Tome.

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Primarily fights using his fists despite having a sword hanging down his waist.
  • Battle Butler: Serves as one to Bluebeard, carrying out his orders and taking down his enemies using martial arts. After he was forced to leave Bluebeard's employ, Clovis becomes one to Ex instead.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Shows a fair share of loyalty to Bluebeard because the latter adopted him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: An orphan that was given a Blank Tome, life hasn't been that kind to him.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: His eyes have no light inside of them, reflecting on his horrible childhood and the crimes he committed in Bluebeard's name.
  • Heel–Face Turn: How much of a heel he was to begin with is debatable, but he was working with Bluebeard before he joined Reina's group.
  • Shock and Awe: A master of releasing thunder and inflicting paralysis with his fists.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Gilles de Rais, who took him in and showed him kindness when no one else did.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Overlapping with Hidden Depths. Despite his ruthlessness and loyalty to Blue Beard, deep down Clovis is a kind and virtuous young man. Ex and even Jeanne go out of their way to point out his virtues because he actually tries to carry out his master's will with as few deaths as he can. Bluebeard even kicks Clovis out of his employ because he believes Clovis is way too kind to be working for someone like him, encouraging the Blank Tome user to find someone worthy of his kindness to serve.

Second Clothes
Hero
Classes: Shooter/Healer
Weapon: St. Fortem's God Cane (聖フォルテムの神杖)
Voiced by: Sumire Uesaka

The Shaman of Chaos, and a member of the Fortem cult.

  • A Day in the Limelight: The Unspoken Story of the Shaman of Chaos. It is a story completely narrated by herself about how she spent her time after partying off at the end of the first chapter (which also served as a PV for the event "On the Road to Freedom").
  • "Blind Idiot" Translation: The official romanization of her name is "Curly". The game's main antagonists are named after Greek gods, so she's clearly meant to be called Kali. The guys from Flero realized this, and changed her name to "Kali" for the global release.
  • But Now I Must Go: She leaves with Loki at the end of All Creation Story Zone... This ends up saving their asses from Ex's rampage.
  • Casting a Shadow: Her magic element, which she shares with Loki.
  • Chained by Fashion: She wears a pair of long-chained handcuffs. The chains aren't present in the anime, however.
  • Dub Name Change: Kali in the Global version. Which makes more sense, given her offical Japanese romanization doesn't follow the Religious and Mythological Theme Naming of the Fortem Cult's members.
  • Empty Eyes: She's blind.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After having enought of Morrigan's shit, she abandons the Fortem cult and joins Ex and pals in King Arthur's Story Zone.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: By the time she returns in King Arthur's world, she wears completetly different clothes.

    Loki

Loki (ロキ)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/loki_68.png
Young
Hero
Weapon: Nahat Schnabel (ナハト・シュナーベル)
Voiced by: Takahiro Mizushima

A self-proclaimed magician and another member of the Fortem cult. Like Ex, he also has a Wild Crest that lets him connect with any hero's soul.

  • Arch-Enemy: Reina.
  • The Apprentice: His Hero Episode reveals that during his youth (and before meeting Curly), Loki was under the tutelage of an unnamed wizard, who got murdered by a Mega Villain.
  • But Now I Must Go: Curly and him leave at the end of All Creation Story Zone... And lucky for them, this ends up sparing them from Ex's rampage (especially for him, since this is the second time he gets to cheat death).
  • Casting a Shadow: Like Curly, his magic element is also shadow.
  • Evil Laugh: He tends to laugh maniacally.
  • The Heavy: The Fortem Cult is the primary antagonistic force in the game, but Loki has the most influence to Reina's group due to being the one who destroyed Reina's Story Zone and constantly getting in their way.
  • One-Winged Angel: He transforms into Machina Prince during the confrontation with him in Snow White's Story Zone.
  • Not Quite Dead: He was thought to have perished after his fight with Ex's party in Snow White Story Zone, but Loki was lucky enough to survive and join them in the final battle with Morrigan.
  • Troll: Loves to get into the skin of virtually everyone he meets, especially Reina.

The Witch of Calamity.

  • Big Bad: Of the original Grimms Notes storyline.
  • Final Boss: Of Ex and pals' journey. Complete with a One-Winged Angel form.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: As an enemy, she relies on just her hands to throw her magic attacks. As a Hero however, she uses a magic book.
  • The Minion Master: She's aided by chibified forms of the main Chaos Tellers (C. Dunyazad, Candy Witch, C. Dante and Kuzunoha), but only when she's playable.
  • Mook Maker: As True Morrigan, she can summon plenty of Villains and Mega Villains. Though she doesn't do this in Snow Ashes' Story Zone
  • One-Winged Angel: True Morrigan.
  • Recurring Boss: Fights the party lot of times in the final Story Zone, and she's far from a pushover.
  • Secret A.I. Moves: Of the five techniques she borrows from other Chaos Tellers, three of them are unavailable for the playable version.
    • Action Bomb: Can summon a walking explosive gingerbread man. This skill is borrowed from Candy Witch.
    • Death from Above: Like Chaos Godmother, she makes a giant pumpkin fall into the player.
    • Tornado Move: Jumps and creates a giant whirlwind effect around her, which also buffes her defense. Borrowed move from Chaos Galahad.
  • Stationary Boss: True Morrigan again.
  • Swirly Energy Thingy: Jumps and summons a giant black void which will suck in and damage the player characters if they get near enough.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Like all the members of the Fortem cult.

Weapon: Ginnungagap (ギンヌンガガプ)
Weakness: None

A man in dark clothes who travels between Story Zones, capable of capturing heroes' souls and create Chaos Tellers, like the former Witch of Calamity.

  • Bandaged Face: To hide his own identity.
  • Dual Boss
    • Teams up with Chaos Jack in the Recollection Cave of the event "Dorothea's Trial Part 1".
    • And later with Reina Viehmann in the second part's Recollection Cave.
  • Good Costume Switch: Again, post Heel–Face Turn.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Joins Revol and co. after dealing with his own Story Zone, as Ex.
  • The Minion Master: Like Morrigan when being controlled by the player, he's accompanied by chibis of the main Chaos Tellers (C. Siren, C. Rugal, Duchess and Lira's Essence).
  • Recurring Boss: You fight him twice in the main story, and a couple more in a Symbol Event.
  • Weaponized Teleportation: His normal attack. He just doesn't swing his sword, he makes it teleport to attack his opponents from above, and behind.

    Deus Prometheus

Deus Prometheus (デウス・プロメテウス)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gn_deusprometheus.png
Unmasked
Weakness: None
Voiced by: Kosuke Toriumi

Following his defeat in Viehmann Story Zone, Prometheus abandons Ex's body and goes to possess an homunculus created by Dr. Frakenstein and Paracelsus, modeled after Hans Andersen. From then onwards, he calls himself "Deus Prometheus", and becomes the last Big Bad the party has to deal with for the last quarter of the game.

  • A God Am I: While he know he is not exactly a god, he thinks he's close to being one, due to being already too powerful on his own. And yes, he's also planning to become a god.
  • Abusive Parents: Of the negletful variety. He gave life to the Shaman of the Mirror, so he might as well be considered her father. Deus abandons her at the mercy of the party once the sealed door to the Final World is opened. And when encountered in there, he seems to have completely forgotten about her, not caring whether she died or not.
  • Actually a Doombot: Deus is easily defeated the first time he's fought, leaving the party shocked. Turns out that was just a weak illusion created by the Shaman of the Mirror. Then the man himself shows up, revealing he was just toying around with Revol and company. And when he's fought for real... He proves them right out the bat they're incredibly out of his league.
  • Arch-Enemy: While Deus is this to the party for causing them so much suffering, he is especially this to Luisa on a very personal level, following her Heel–Face Turn. Deus may have taken Luisa under his wing while he was possesing Ex, but it was to use her as a mere pawn to be discarded the moment she is no longer useful, what with transforming her into a Chaos Teller and forcing her to fight her own brother. She rightfully despises him for it.
  • Assimilation Plot: His ultimate plan, which he reveals in 16-1-13. He intends to kill the Archteller, take his place, and merge all the Story Zones into a single world, called "The World of Deus Andersen". Pretty original name.
  • Big Bad: After a recovered Ex joins the party, he becomes the ultimate main antagonist of Repage, and the whole game by extension.
  • Body Horror: In 1-11-15, Elena activates a spell that forcibly removes many of the souls that Deus absorbed. And since the homunculus he's currently possessing can't keep up with the pressure, this results in Deus swelling up with lots of limbs protruding from his body at the same time. If he had been a normal human being, he would have exploded right away. Once the party retrieves the other half of All Creation Bookmark from him, they mercilessly leave Deus alone, who's writhing in pain. It results in him turning into Chaos Andersen.
  • The Battle Didn't Count: The second battle with him. Gameplay-wise you have to defeat him like any other enemy. But as far as the story is concerned, not only the party didn't manage to defeat him, Deus wasn't even trying at all.
  • Cool Mask: Wears a blank white mask, which gets destroyed after the party deals with him and his Clone Army.
  • Determinator: Being forced into a painful Body Horror transformation doesn't stop him keep trying to stop the party from ruining his plans.
  • Evil Cripple: Briefly. While Deus in the middle of his painful transformation into Chaos Andersen (and also rotting away), he's unable to move. So he sends a few Chaos Tellers to deal with the party to buy him some time before he can walk properly again.
  • Evil Laugh: Boy, does he ever like to laugh like a maniac.
  • Eye Colour Change: From green to red.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He likes to speak cordially, despite being a Manipulative Bastard who only cares about himself and committing way too many atrocities during the story.
  • "Hell, Yes!" Moment: Just when the Story Tellers were about to destroy him for good, the Shaman of the Mirror shows up, repels their attack, and opens the giant portal to the Archteller's world. He gets quite happy and leaves quickly, not before praising the girl who just saved him.
  • Hate Sink: Sure, Deus Prometheus may have some Evil Is Cool points thanks to his sleek design and incredible powers, but at the end of the day, he is a Manipulative Bastard who pretends to be nice to his allies and minions just to get their cooperation, when in reality he does not care about anyone but himself. And we are not even getting started on the atrocities he committed throughout the story, either through manipulation or by himself: Deus is responsible for destroying Reina's home world and leaving her as the Sole Survivor, turning Elena into the former Big Bad Morrigan, leading the Fortem cult to spread disaster in countless Story Zones, taking over Ex's body and murdering his friends (leaving the poor boy in And I Must Scream status), turning Hecate into a monster... And the list goes on and on. To top it all, he proved to be a horrible father by abandoning the Shaman of the Mirror to her luck after the latter practically saved his life. Yes, Deus seems to have graduated with a degree in the Kick the Dog university, it is quite easy to hate him. His motives are not even likable, he simply desires to Take Over the World.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: He caused plenty of troubles throughout the whole game via Demonic Possession, and with the help of the Fortem cult and his own minions, but he does not outright reveal his true goals until the 2-part finale.
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch: He takes away the Holy Grail from Baron Munchausen, the thing that was keeping him alive for more than 100 years, once it's clear that he'll no longer be useful. But the Baron was an asshole who also committed tons of attrocities on Deus' behalf, so it's hard to feel bad seeing him dying a slow, agonizing death.
  • I Shall Taunt You:
    • Mocks the party for being weaklings, stating he never saw them as enemies, just as pests.
    • During his imprisonment in the central island, he gloats to Charles Perrault (in the form of an illusion) about having sent his subordinates to deal with the party on his behalf. The only retort Charles can think of is telling Deus that he will deal the finishing blow to him once the party is done lighting up all the McGuffins.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Doesn't use any weapons, just his hands to cast all his spells.
  • False Friend: To the Baron Münchausen. The latter foolishly sees himself as a "partner" of Deus rather than an underling, with Deus reaussuring him that they are friends, despite the Baron's many failed attempts to get rid of the party. It is nothing more than sweet talking to keep the boy on his side. When the Baron is at the brink of death, Deus non-chalantly takes the Holy Grail for himself, condemning his former "friend" to cessation of existence.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Baron recognizes that Deus has a talent for manipulating other people's hearts. The former reveals in Prometheus Story Zone that Deus did not take care of Hecate out of goodwill or anything like that; He needed to develop a strong bond with her, so he could turn her into a Chaos Teller. When they meet each other again, Deus simply tells Luisa that he does not care about her anymore.
  • Me's a Crowd: The ultimate plan of Charles Perrault in Grimms Notes Story Zone was to get the party lit a few McGuffins scattered around the zone so he could split Deus on six with a single blow, weakening him the process. They succeed, and the party fights the six copies in two battles.
  • One-Winged Angel: Chaos Andersen.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: His desire to become a god makes Elena feel suspicious about him. Because she remembers that Andersen once said that "true salvation may only be given by god, and that is why people will try to reach out to the light, and I want to believe in that". Andersen never had intentions of becoming a god, so this is a clue that Deus is not exactly who he seems to be.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: He ain't fooling anyone with that dyed hair and mask... Except the characters from the game, who can't seem to figure whose body is possesing this guy now. It isn't until his mask breaks apart in Grimms Notes' Story Zone that everyone finally realizes it's Hans Andersen. Not that he was exactly trying to hide his identity in the first place.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Delivers one to each party member while personally beating the shit out of them.
  • Recurring Boss: Not counting his Chaos Andersen/Archteller forms, He's fought a grand total of eleven times.
    • His copies are fought once in Aesop's zone, and six times in Grimms Notes' zone (two battles, one copy per wave).
    • As for the real deal, Deus is confronted at the end of both said worlds, and once more in the Final World.
    • Chaos Archeteller summons 2 copies of him before the final battle.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: When he hears the news about Dorothea's sacrifice, all he does is laugh and mock her for being "reckless".
  • So Long, Suckers!: Bids a taunting farewell to the party after crossing the giant portal opened by the Shaman of the Mirror.
  • Suddenly Voiced: The original Hans Andersen didn't have voiced dialogues in cutscenes.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: As Lafcadio reveals to the party, Deus is actually the evil half of Hans Andersen. When Andersen paid a visit to the Archteller with the All Creation Bookmark on hand, he was asked by the latter to expulse the evil side that has spout inside him, and so Andersen did. Unfortunately, he wasn't qualified to use the bookmark, which resulted in his body, soul and mind shattering into pieces. His evil half (who didn't have neither soul, body, or mind) took the opportunity to absorb said pieces of the good half, and became something of a thought projection. Which allowed him to possess other people.
  • This Cannot Be!: His reaction when he's soundly defeated in 15-1-21. And if it wasn't for the Shaman of the Mirror shielding his ass, he would have been finished off by the Story Tellers.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Pulls this on the Baron, who was at the verge of death due to his defeat at the hands of the party. Deus forcibly removes the Holy Grail fused on the Baron, killing him in the process.
