Feel like Jesu Otaku's discussion on the endings for Master of Martial Hearts/ School Days belongs somewhere on this page.

Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gULlVuNlkXs

And here's the full quote I think is relevant:

Why do I bring this up? Because quite frankly, I love the ending to School Days. It's still terrible, don't get me wrong, but that ending made it a legendary sort of terrible. It's like this anime heard it's audience saying "I want to see every last one of these douchebags die horribly" and then gave us what we wanted. It's sick, it's awful, it's totally out of nowhere...but that's sort of how you do an awful 180. School Days is a terrible anime like The Room is a terrible movie; it's So Bad, It's Good. And solely because'' of how it ended, I would actually recommend it to some people.

Master of Martial Hearts is the polar opposite of this. It's ending is a dark, gruesome twist out of absolutely nowhere, just like School Days, but it is an abhorrent, out-of-place and hateful change-up.

First of all, it doesn't really make any sense. They try to explain it, but it takes over 15 solid minutes of exposition to even do that, making it needlessly convoluted and unpleasant. The entire ending of the series is just the twist being explained.

That's bad enough, but pulling a big handful of awful on the characters doesn't work either. In School Days we actively hated the characters and the terrible people they were, so their fates were kinda cathartic for the viewers. The characters in Martial Hearts don't really have any character to speak of, so it just feels like more mindless filth, but with malice behind it.

So plot-wise, it's horrendous. Character wise, it's meaningless. And this is to say nothing of the message it turns out they were building to. Oh yes, Martial Hearts wants to teach us something, and it's absolutely incredible what they're implying through this revolting conclusion to a revolting show. It hurts to watch on every conceivable level. And unless you're one of those people who thinks dark twists make things better regardless of context, because some people do, there is no reason this should've been done.

Heaven forbid someone finds the result sexy, either. This is the antithesis of sexy. So if it didn't already, Master of Martial Hearts officially serves no purpose to anyone, ever, at all.

Now that the definition for this trope has been altered should we reconsider old entries deleted in the past? I recall entries on Pokemon The Series Diamond&Pearl Pokémon Adventures (the Black and White Chapter) and The Last of Us Part 2 were removed because their works were still successful and their franchises continued. But given the trope definition is now altered should they be re-added

I definitely think the Pokémon season that got backlash for Ash's loss counts.

As for The Last of Us 2, it's more debatable, but there's an argument for it. The thing being a Downer Ending that left everyone worse off can be off-putting. There's also the fact that Ellie sparing Abby kind of makes the whole revenge quest pointless, and it infuriated people who despised Abby and wanted her to die. Though the latter group would probably dislike the game either way, with Abby's survival just being another nail in the coffin. On the other hand, I'd say the backlash to the ending is overshadowed by the backlash to Abby killing Joel, not helped by the fact that you have to play as Abby afterwards and many found her Unintentionally Unsympathetic.

Edit: Looks like I got the unpopular Pokémon endings wrong, but I still the one listed on the page counts.

Could Man of Steel count? As the ending battle in Metropolis and Superman killing Zod has overshadowed all discussion on the film and even bleed into discussions of later DCEU films. I've even seen a handful of critics say Superman killing Zod destroyed any interest they had in later installments

Moving here per TRS.

  • Attack on Titan:
    • The final chapter of the manga was intended to be a dramatic Bittersweet Ending but had so much Narm that it ended up being a giant joke, leading to an avalanche of memes on the internet. Spoilers of the final chapter are still being posted outside of the fandom leading to viewers that haven't seen the ending doubting if it is even the same story.
    • In order to tone down the Flame War that was in the fandom, an extra 15 pages was added to the chapter in the final volume release; it ended up making things worse turning the entire story into a "Shaggy Dog" Story. It proved the final antagonist was correct. Paradis was bombed and the titan powers were reclamed rendering the Alliance's efforts to stop the centuries long war via reconciliation as useless.

This states while the reaction is a valid example, the entry needs to explain exactly what about the ending was so reviled to be written as a valid example.

The best example would be that Drake & Josh episode.

Removed this due to numerous inaccuracies. Where to begin...?

  • The galaxy isn't destroyed at all; it only takes heavy damage if your War Assets are very low.
  • There is far more to the ending than just "color of light".
  • None of it is a Deus ex Machina as the Crucible's and Catalyst's roles in the ending are foreshadowed. The choices are also foreshadowed.
  • There is nothing god-like about the Catalyst.
  • There is nothing "magical" about the ending, as the Crucible can be used to do things that have been foreshadowed.

An accurate-to-facts entry should be written, if it's going to be included here.

It's a valid case of Ending Aversion and shouldn't just be pulled. If it represents the ending inaccurately, then rewrite it. The article Be Bold exists for a reason.

Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.

Where did you get the idea that foreshadowing and Deus ex Machina are somehow mutually exclusive? You can have a Deus ex Machina with foreshadowing. In fact, that was very common in the original Greek theatres. Ass Pull is the trope that comes with no foreshadowing. So the third point really doesn't stand.

Just a brief note here, watch out for the entry for Mass Effect 3, that guy whose been vandalizing the ME pages trying to make the ending sound good is still here.

This is a signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Given that we aren't allowed to add wicks to Angst Aversion, maybe we should put Downer Ending and Bittersweet Ending wicks here. I sure as hell know the big reason I still haven't finished Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is because Nia dies and everyone except Rossiu gets screwed over.

So, what is this? A supertrope? I've been trying to figure out what this is, and it just sounds like a combination of Ending Fatigue, The Chris Carter Effect and Seasonal Rot. Very confusing.
