Find a Trope:
resolved Soap Opera Disease or Disease by Any Other Name?
The protagonist of a work set in a modern, developed country described herself to be "sickly since birth" and has, at different points of the story, consistently described her health issues to be symptoms that are associated with heart diseases, which means it's not hard for readers to read her condition as mainly that of a congenital heart defect. However, she never says she has heart disease, let alone anything further than that, despite the condition she has is, as one can guess, not a taboo.
I found it somewhere between Soap Opera Disease (I think Soap Opera Disease needs the condition to be poorly defined) and Disease by Any Other Name (which seems to imply the disease is well-defined but the society isn't developed enough to identify it like us—however, I read some would like to define it as Diagnosed by the Audience but for physical conditions, an idea I don't really like). Which of these are flexible to accommodate this case?
Edited by SamCurtresolved Clothes of the fallen-Semi resolved? TragicKeepsake seems to be what this is Videogame
Thinking about how in some Undertale fanart, Sans on the genocide route is wearing his brother's scarf, and in Ride to Hell: Retribution, the main character wears his brother's jacket. I think it's a trope but I'm not sure where
Edited by jdxtremeresolved A place is magically hidden
Examples I can think of include Hogwarts from Harry Potter (which can't be put on a map, and looks like a crumbling ruin to normal people), and the Archipelago from Impossible Creatures (2023) (which can't be detected from the outside world because it subtly pushes people away).
resolved Blind to their own priviliege
A character claims to be a Self-Made Man, but actually had an unfair advantage thanks to bring born into wealth, racial advantage, or other priviliege
Edited by Biggbyresolved Running super long distances
I know there's a trope about it, its page image is a poster about a marathon race styled like an ancient greek vase. But for the life of me I can't remember its name. Help?
resolved Neutralizing the strongest asset of the enemy Anime
Is there a trope matching the tactic of going after the strongest element of an enemy to disable them for good ?
As explained in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Main Characters under Chess Motif for Athrun Zala, this is his main role since receiving his Infinite Justice. He usually goes against those strong elements to occupy and neutralise them, leaving Kira free to do the damage, his Gundam is even specialized to force duels with his close-combat arsenal.
resolved Celebratory logo
Is there a trope for when a logo - like a company logo or a show logo - changes its design to fit a holiday theme?
resolved Misleading book covers? Literature
Is there a trope where a book cover disguises the content of the work (on purpose), but doesn't fall under the precise definitions of Clandestine Cover, Book and Switch, or Covers Always Lie?
I'm trying to figure out where Transformers writer James Roberts' fan novel "Eugenesis" would go, with its classic lit parody cover: [1]◊
resolved Leaves angrily and then comes back immediately after
Is there a trope for when a character leaves in a huff after an argument or something, only for them to have forgotten something and have to awkwardly return? Sometimes with the other characters remarking that she'll be back in a moment?
resolved I think the Trope starts with Char and then more letters, maybe two words total.
It implies that everything looks clean on the surface, but upon investigation, there's dirty layers beneath. Example; Stepford Wives. Does anyone know what I'm trying to remember? I've found it here before.
Edited by C4rn463H34r7resolved Similar To Scrappy Mechanic Videogame
Hi there, I'm going through a variety of online games, and was wondering if there was a YMMV trope similar to Scrappy Mechanic, but it's something scrappy caused by the players rather than the game itself? (Ex: Players overinflating the prices of in-game items for trade, or a certain playstyle being ridiculed because it's considered low tier).
(May not use it if it's more considered flame bait, but would like clarification regardless)
resolved "Game Rule"-breaking Boss Videogame
A video game boss that is allowed to go past otherwise established limits of the game, such as having a larger-than-otherwise-allowed party size. For example, the ax party size for the player and all other units in the game is five, but this boss gets to have six.
Couple of spoilers ahead for Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Unicorn Overlord: (Seems that spoiler tags don't work here)
- In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Final Boss Volo has his series-standard full team of six Pokemon, then uses Giratina, and then uses Giratina's "Origin Form" on top of that for a total of eight.
- In Unicorn Overlord, Baltro has, in the final battle, including himself, a party with six units that must be defeated. The max the player can create, or is otherwise encountered in the game, is five.
I don't think it's Beyond the Impossible as this is more a violation of a game mechanic than the "internal logic of the story". It toes around Boss Bonanza, but in each of these cases, it's not a series of bosses, but one boss with a larger-than-standard party size to use against you. Maybe there's something to an Inversion of Fair-Play Villain, but I'm hesitant.
Edited by BeerBaronresolved Magical Girl Companion Animal Anime
Exactly what it says on the tin. Most magical girl teams feature a creature that tags along and is usually responsible for giving the team their powers.
resolved No Title
The Perfectionist character is forcing another character to be a "little miss perfect" so people don't make fun of the latter in public.
What is this trope?
resolved Animosity between people working together
Which one is it when people who don't like each other are made to work together?
For example, in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore asks Snape to teach Harry Occlumency, with little success, because of the animosity between them.
resolved English All Along
RESOLVED: Signs of Disrepair
A name presumed to be in an alien or fantasy language turns out to be a fragment of a word/phrase from english or another real language. Often coincides with an Earth All Along reveal.
Examples:
V'Ger(Voyager) from Star Trek: The Motion Picture
WondLa(The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum) from WondLa
Calima(Cation, Live Animals) from Planet of the Apes (2001)
Zardoz(Wizard of oz) from Zardoz
Edited by Aegarainresolved Index for Character Design?
Do we have an index that encompasses all tropes related to character design such as tropes about a character's color scheme (such as Black Knight), a character's looks (such as Bishōnen) or their size and build (such as Hunk)? I know we have individual indexes for each of these but I'm referring to one super index with all of them in it.
resolved Blinkenlights
I was fairly certain we had this, but it shows up as a redlink: the addition of blinking lights to electronic equipment so the user knows something's happening/the viewer doesn't fall asleep.

The Character Pretends To Join The Dark Side But The Villain Already Knows And Either Plays Along Until Their The Most Variable, Or Do Something To ACTUALLY Make Them Join The Evil Side.
