Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] 2014!Pennywise

So to go along with Scrag's script, I'll propose another Script!Pennywise of my own.

After that first draft didn’t go anywhere, Fukunaga and Palmer wrote a second draft in 2015. While this one shares similar scenes and story beats from the prior script, there’s still plenty of unique changes.

For instance, Stanley’s now a goldfish who dies not long after his introduction; Bowers is revealed to have a small dick; Mike is now a fry cook who doesn’t have as much screen time; and Richie’s now Jewish (taking Stanley’s place). However, both scripts have a boy urinating in a mikveh, so at least Fukunaga was dedicated to preserving that scene (even if it did get left out of the final version).

Who Is He?

IT, aka Pennywise, the Eater of Worlds, aka Bob Gray, is the usual monster we all know and love.

What has he done?

A sinister shapeshifter and sadistic child murderer who haunts Derry, Pennywise is introduced goading the little Georgie to come inside the sewer drain, eating the child when he gets close to retrieve his paper boat.

Stalking and scaring the Losers any chance he can get (like telling Ben he should’ve committed suicide) because he wants his food to be seasoned before he dines on them, Pennywise also spends his time kidnapping and eating children about as young as 3. When the Losers go out swimming, Bowers and company try and ruin their fun. So Bowers shoves Patrick Hockstetter in the lake; unfortunately for Hockstetter, Pennywise dwells in the lake, so he sends out the corpses of the children he’s killed centuries ago to drag Hockstetter underwater.

But after a failed attempt to kill the Losers once again at the Neibolt St. house, it’s revealed that Pennywise’s actions extend farther back to 1625. Upon the finding of the settlement that would become known as Derry, Pennywise would go on to torment the pilgrims residing there. Feeding upon a child who was playing in a riverbank, as well as a baby, Pennywise decides to fuck with the pilgrim leader’s wife.

One night when her husband’s searching for the “missing” children, Pennywise makes a twisted deal with the wife: should she give herself up to protect her children, Pennywise will kill her, then devour her husband, her little ones, and all the Native Americans who brought her people here until not even their souls remain on the mortal earth; or she could allow him to have her child and he’ll call it a night. The wife, scared stiff, allows her daughter to be eaten, with Pennywise savoring her and her child’s fear as he devours her whole, even taking her wooden bee trinket to add to his collection. The wife is left alive to reflect on what she's done, whereupon she has a breakdown.

Pennywise would spend the next couple of centuries causing havoc and killing people for the lulz. His previous antics include the mysterious disappearance of the 237 people who signed Derry to become a state; the racist attack on the Black Spot nightclub (which is described, but not shown, unlike the 2014 version); and a massive explosion at the Kitchener Ironworks factory that claimed the lives of 88 children.

Pennywise is also revealed to have met with Beverly’s father Alvin. Having bitten him when he was 13, Pennywise allowed him to live knowing that he would eventually want to have his way with his future daughter. Reuniting with the fully grown Alvin, Pennywise goads him into raping Beverly against his wishes in order to put a stop to the Losers.

Coercing Bowers to kill his asshole father Butch, purely as a means to ensure his control over him, Pennywise sends him and his gang after the Losers to finish them off for good. Their epic chase leads them to the sewers, the lair of Pennywise. Inside, the Losers stumble upon Pennywise’s collecting den, which contains the floating souvenirs—toys, trinkets, clothes, locks of hair—of all the children he’s eaten over the past centuries. Feeling that Bowers has already served his purpose, Pennywise sends him the corpse of Hockstetter in an attempt to kill him.

After Pennywise’s attempt to distract Will long enough to kill him fails, the Losers start beating the shit out of him. But Pennywise turns into Georgie in a last ditch effort to get Will to back off. After he doesn’t respond to a call only Will and the real Georgie know, Will crushes the child-sized Pennywise with a large rock, seemingly defeating him. Travis and Butch are framed for Pennywise’s child killings, and the Losers breathe a sigh of relief knowing that IT is now potentially gone for good… until a red balloon is seen floating over Derry.

Redeeming Qualities?

Lol

Heinousness?

This version of Pennywise also has more unique crimes that aren’t in the original novel, the 2014 script, nor the finished product. Similar to the 2014 version, there’s focus on his past crimes, but they’re completely different here. And while stuff like his collection were kept in the final product, I still feel he does enough unique here to justify a separate writeup.

Conclusion

IT remains an easy keeper as always.

Yes to both Pennywises.

I just rewatched a certain anime, so I figured I may as well get this out of the way.

What is the work?

Cop Craft is an urban fantasy/police procedural anime streaming on Funimation

After losing his partner in the San-Teresa Metropolitan Police, Detective Sergeant Kei Matoba is paired against his will with a Semanian Knight of Mirvor named Tilarna Exedilica. They must track down a fairy who was abducted. It turns out the fairy is supposed to be processed by nightclub owner and drug dealer Dennis Elbaji into a bomb.

Who is Dennis Elbaji and what has he done?

Dennis Elbaji is the head of a fairy dust manufacturing ring who hides behind his role as a nightclub owner.

We are introduced to Elbaji in the second episode when he has Zelada demonstrate a fairy dust bomb to turn two police officers undead, before having them shoot each other for an uncomfortable client.

When Tilarna Exedilica arrives to confront him in his own nightclub in the third episode, Elbaji initially makes unwanted advances towards her, and when he realizes her reason for being there, he brings her to his office, and initially tries to have his men shoot her. After Tilarna makes quick work of his henchmen, he gets into a swordfight with her, eventually disarming her, commenting on her undergarments, and taking her prisoner. On the drive to his processing plant, Elbaji comments that he worships money.

While Tilarna awaits interrogation by Zelada, a fire is ignited. As Tilarna tries to escape, she encounters the storage unit for the fairies, whole and dismembered, and looks on in horror.

As his lair burns, Elbaji makes a blasé quip about how much the fire will cost him. A confrontation ensuses, with Elbaji mocking Tilarna over her missing sword. Kei Matoba brings her sword, a full duel ensues, and Elbaji dies cursing Tilarna out.

Heinousness?

Dennis Elbaji captures fairies, processes them into fairy dust, and assists Zelada for his own gain. The first episode actually refers to the sale of live fairies as human trafficking. In one shot, over 100 jars, each containing fairies or fairy body parts, are shown.

Zelada himself kills scores of people and turns them into meatpuppets, attempts to use a fairy dust bomb to turn anyone within a 5km radius into a meatpuppet, is shown to have massacred a platoon of military personnel, arranged the assassination of two politicians in order to incite violence between Semanians and Earthlings.

Marla Mozeleemay arranges her own husband's assassination, working in tandem with Zelada, exploits her husband's death, and the ensuing chaos, for her own political benefit. (Weegee is handling that discussion).

Cole Mozeleemay himself is a pervert who frequents brothels, but Marla is the real powerhouse between the two of them, and he is ineffectual.

FBI agent Ronald Chan sold out his own team to Zelada and is working with him, but Zelada is calling the shots.

Everyone else is just a bog standard average joe.

Mitigating Factors?

Elbaji is a greedy sociopath and perverted creep whose actions are displayed onscreen. His origins as part of the knight class are not portrayed as tragic; he is shown to have surpassed any possible excuse with his greed and cruelty. He shows no regard for anyone but himself.

Verdict?

Maybe it is because Zelada is so much damn worse, but Elbaji doesn't really impress me much. Nonetheless, I will admit he is worthy of discussion.

Alright having just finished Chicken Run, I concur with Ravok that Mrs. Tweedy doesn't count she's taken seriously enough but the movie goes out of its way to show that she doesn't know that the chickens are sentient and by the end of the movie when she does learn, it's too little too late (she has like, two lines after learning that they were sentient).

Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheon

It's been two weeks since the Final Boss of Healin' Good♡Pretty Cure got destroyed (it's February 28 in Japan), so I'm going to do a write-up for him. Here's one for King Byo-gen ...

What is Healin' Good?

Healin' Good is the 17th installment of the Pretty Cure franchise and the 15th continuity. The show focuses on the Healing Garden, a magical garden protected by Healing Animals, fairies based on various animals, as well as a dog-like fairy named Latte and her mother Teatinu. When a group called the Byo-gen attack the Garden in hopes of poisoning the entire planet, Latte, as well as three of the Healing Animals, Rabirin, Pegitan and Nyatoran, flee to Earth in hopes of finding human partners to become Pretty Cure.

Who is King Byo-gen and what did he do?

King Byo-gen is the Big Bad of the season. He leads the Byo-gen army with three generals: Daruizen, Shindoine and Guaiwaru. Initially, not much is really said about him, just got badly injured before the series started and stayed as a giant evil face who would occasionally oversee his henchmen. Not a lot of background was really given to him either. Then in Episode 39 (of a season that only had 45 episodes), he's suddenly destroyed and it seems that Guaiwaru (he had arranged for the Cures to come and kill him) was going to take over as the Big Bad ...

... until two episodes later, where he absorbed said general and regained his true form. From there, the show starts to take a really serious turn. He ends up absorbing another one of his generals and later gets an upgraded form. From there, he infects the entire planet and the Precures stop him.

Heinousness

Honestly ... I don't think he was really heinous compared to other villains who have gained the Complete Monster distinction. Worst he seems to do is absorb two of generals, but one of them was trying to take his place as the Big Bad (Guaiwaru) and the other one was an apathetic Knight of Cerebus to begin with (Daruizen, who was also indirectly responsible for the main character's sickness). He does infect the entire world during Episode 44, but it doesn't seem to be anything too special. These generals were also literal diseases, not living humans or monsters beforehand.

Mitigating Factors:

Two of his generals were mentioned ... but he also had another general who was fanatically loyal to him. This general, Shindoine, actually planned for him to emerge to his true form, and worked together to get the other general to become an even stronger form. In fact, when she even volunteered to be absorbed in that general's place, he said that she was too loyal to be absorbed, showing that he at least sees some value in her. He does try to shrug her off after she's purified though, saying that he could make other generals in her place, showing he did view her as expendable, but it's nothing that would avert this.

Verdict:

Due to him not appearing that long to show his full heinousness, I'd actually vote against making King Byo-gen a Complete Monster. I even consider a villain that got killed much earlier, Batetemoda, to be more of a Knight of Cerebus than King Byo-gen himself. King Byo-gen came front and center in the final act. I'm giving him a [tdown] for this.

If there'd been more focus on infecting the entire planet with a disease? I'd support him. As is? Conceding that our latest Pretty Cure baddie doesn't count. That said, there's gotta be someone else lurking from one of the many, many movies made on the sidelines of the series.

Also a no.

  • Cop Craft Anime:
    • Zelada is an extremist who uses acts of violence to incite hatred between humans and Semanians. Initially unseen, Zelada frequently uses the "latena" of fairies to kill others and enslave them as controlled corpses. Introduced posing as a subordinate of the smuggler Dennis Elbaji, Zelada demonstrates a prototype for a "fairy dust" bomb on two police officers. Confronted by San-Teresa Police Detectives Kei Matoba and Tilarna Exedilica—the former of whom recognizes Zelada for slaughtering his platoon when Kei was in the military—Zelada exploits their superior's xenophobia in order to escape to the roof of a skyscraper where he intends to amplify his bomb's blast radius. Seemingly dying by falling off the roof—and with his bomb having been defused—Zelada eventually reveals himself to still be alive, having arranged the assassination of two mayoral candidates in order to increase tensions between humans and Semanians. After capturing Kei and Tilarna, and killing a reporter who met up with them, Zelada claims to be acting in the best interest of the Semanians, but is called out for his xenophobia by Tilarna before Kei shows up to confront him.
    • Dennis Elbaji is the head of a "fairy dust" manufacturing ring who hides behind his role as a nightclub owner, having abducted over a hundred fairies to manufacture his product for his own personal gain. Introduced having the sorcerer Zelada test a fairy dust bomb on police officers, Elbaji makes Zelada toy with the corpses before having one corpse shoot both. Confronted by Tilarna in his nightclub after harassing her, Elbaji tries to have her shot once he realizes she is on a rescue mission. Subsequently defeating her in a sword fight, Elbaji takes Tilarna prisoner, professing to worship money on the drive to his facility. Later setting his facility ablaze, Elbaji makes a callous quip about how much the fire will cost him when he encounters Tilarna again. Defeated in a final duel thanks to Kei's intervention, Elbaji defiantly curses Tilarna out.
