Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I think that quote's good for SOMETHING; I'm just not sure if CM is that something.

Also, aside from the renaming, I'm fine with the Satan rewrite.

Alright then. How about this other quote from Quan Chi?

I'm dissapointed. I brought you here for one purpose and you have failed me. You're as weak as your wife was. As your child. Yes, you fool. It wasn't Sub-Zero at all. I killed them. It was easy. Okay Whitehead looks like a bust, and I probably can't propose the other guy on account of him being dead before the episode with no flashbacks.

So moving on here is another new series that I enjoyed, one which thankfully isn't canceled prematurely.

Now Gangs of London is a British crime drama and in my opinion not just one of the best new shows to come out of this year, but one of the best in a long time, that I’d really recommend to anyone.

After several decades of near total dominion and laundering billions of pounds, Finn Wallace the most powerful crime boss in all of London is murdered and no one knows by whom. The underworld is thrown into turmoil, as everyone struggles to adjust, adapt and hopefully take advantage of this upset in the status quo.

Sean Wallace, Finn’s eldest son and successor, is on a rampage to find out who killed his father, even if it means burning London to the ground; whilst Finn’s former partner Ed Dumani attempts to maintain some level of stability, all the while keeping one eye on his own families future. Luan, the leader of Albania’s, attempts to ensure his deal with Finn is kept, as he plans to break the Wallace’s monopoly on building skyscrapers (it being this that enabled Finn to rule for so long). Meanwhile undercover police officer Eliot Finch manages to exploit the crisis to get into Sean’s inner circle, thus finally having a the chance to bring it all down, but can he wade through the darkness without being seduced. And then there are the people who are really behind the series turmoil, the investors.

Now I won’t lie, this series has an incredibly high heinous standard. But having said that I think I’ve found two potential candidates from the first season.

Unsurprisingly with a series that involves just about every type of gang in London (and beyond), this series features a variety of dangerous mob bosses none of whom prove to be a stranger to getting their hands dirty to accomplish their goals. However, there is one name who manages to stand out from the rest.

So without further ado, let me introduce you to my first (as well as largest and most likely) candidate Mosi.

Who Is he:

An understated, yet brutal Nigerian crime lord who is notorious to the point that even other mobsters are weary of doing deals with him with.

Needing more money to construct his skyscraper and knowing that Mosi is seeking to expand his base, Luan approaches him for a deal offering to split the profits.

This however, proves to be a mistake.

What Does He Do:

We’re first introduced to Mosi in episode three, when Luan visits him Nigeria to reassure him that the deal will still go through despite Finn’s death complicating matters. Mosi takes Luan to see another building he’s having constructed. Initially appearing civil, he then introduces him to a wounded man locked in a cage.

Whilst the terrified man begs him for mercy Mosi has the cage boarded up and then filled with concrete becoming one of the support pillars for the floor, with the scene showing the sheer number of identical pillars, several with similar restraints, implying this is the not the first time he’s done this. Telling Luan to make him his money, Mosi leaves the visibly startled Luan.

Despite the odds Luan does manage to get everything back on track, with Ed signing off on allowing his skyscraper to be built. Unfortunately, unknown to everyone Finn cheated him and set up a time delayed transfer to steal all the money and hide it in one of his offshore bank accounts before he died.

Discovering his money is gone and not interested in the fact that Luan genuinely didn’t have it, a furious Mosi arrived in London with three of his enforcers. Following giving a speech to them and handing out weapons, he leads them to the investment bank which had handled the cash transfer. Arriving Mosi has his men massacre everyone inside with Machetes, cutting off their hands before hacking them to death.

Saving the banking governor for last, Mosi ignores his pleas that they don’t have the money and personally severs his hand from his arm before killing him. Arriving at Luan’s home, where he is in the process of throwing a birthday party for his youngest daughter Bukuroshe (who’s around six). Giving her the dog of the man he just killed as a birthday present, Mosi makes it clear to Luan that he wants his money back by the end of the week or else he will kill Luan’s entire family.

When Luan’s attempts to get Ed’s help fail, he realises his only hope is to kill Mosi first (something that’s especially problematic as he’s already lost all his loyal enforcers by this point). Sending his family off to the safe house, and then with his remaining loyal right hand Tarik he organises a plan to strike Mosi in his motel room using Chinese gangster Jin Li (who introduced them in the first place) to find out where Mosi is.

Unfortunately Li decides he’s more afraid of Mosi than Luan, and betrays him. Thus upon the supposed ambush, Li lures Tarik into a trap and Mosi has him carved apart, leaving his body parts in a laundry basket outside his room to distract Luan.

Catching him at machete point, Mosi’s men disarm and drag Luan into the room. Mosi then reveals he had another man drag Li back in. Li pleas that Mosi promised him that he could go once he did his part to deal with Tarik, but they fall on deaf ears, Mosi having two of his goons slice him to death.

Holding off on killing Luan, Mosi steals his phone and happily informs him that his wife will be arriving soon, revealing he plans to kill her before him and declares "it’s a shame the children aren’t with her".

However, this pushes Luan far enough that he manages to break free, steal the machete off the man holding him, and kill Mosi’s men. Mosi grabs his own machete to defend himself, but Luan proves faster and guts him on the spot.

Any Freudian Excuse or Redeeming Traits:

Standing out from all the other ruthless gangsters to appear throughout the first season, Mosi is the only one presented as having no loved ones, redeeming traits or sympathetic moments.

He does have a friendly repertoire with his enforcers, but he never shows any sign of actually caring about them. His only reaction when Luan kills them, is to scramble to protect himself.

Now its true Mosi did lose millions and he does at one point give a speech to his men about how Europeans always feel they can cheat and exploit African’s like themselves. However, it’s never elaborated if he’s ever actually being exploited and the scene is presented more akin to him galvanising his men before going on a rampage.

His response of wanting to massacre anyone even tangibly involved, and Luan’s entire family is hopelessly disproportionate. He doesn’t even consider listening to the fact that they were all robbed as well, or give them the chance to try to get the money back. Likewise he seems to care about killing the people he blames over actually retrieving the money, with his only focus being on the fact that he personally was stolen from, rather than him actually losing the money.

He likewise plays nice whilst in Bukuroshe’s presence, but that’s purely to intimidate Luan.

Heinous Standard:

Now as I said the shows standard is incredibly high. Nearly every single character is at least responsible for one death by the end. Likewise massacres aren’t unique to him, Sean slaughters an entire camp of Welsh travellers for shattering the person who shot his father, Asif has his rivals entire organisation slaughtered for stealing from him, and mercenary Leif personally kills most of Sean and Luan’s enforcers in attempt on Sean’s life.

Likewise whilst more sympathetic than Mosi, Luan himself is still a very dangerous gangster. To get the deal with Finn to build his skyscraper he had to allow the murder of an entire large eastern European extended family (including at least one small child). Though granted he at least makes it clear he wasn’t personally involved and didn’t want to do it.

However, whilst several figures do kill more people than Mosi, it’s important to remember all these events were carried out by powerful mob bosses who had literal armies of thugs with guns. Mosi meanwhile only has three enforcers (he presumably has more back home, but he only brings three to London) and his men don’t even carry guns.

He still manages to murder thirteen people (not counting Tarik), all of which in an especially brutal manner.

Likewise (baring Finn and Luan’s massacre of the family) all the other massacres were against rival gangsters or at least people affiliated with him. Mosi meanwhile slaughters the workers at an investment bank who are never suggested to have known they were dealing with criminals.

He is also (excluding Finn) one of only two figures (the other will be my next candidate), in the entire season to actively target children, which is where most of the other mobsters draw a line.

Conclusion:

I could see this one going either way. But I think between his lower resources, the sheer brutality of his crimes, and flairs of cruelty, I could see Mosi making it.

Either way he’s a really good antagonist despite his admittedly quite minor role. Still what do you think?

I've found a third Zootopia fanfic candidate.

What the Work

Zootopia A New Adventure is one of those "human gets reincarnated in Zootopia" types of fanfics by determined725, where it focuses on a human named Luke Barrett, who dies on a camping trip and reincarnates as a wolf in Zootopia. It largely maintains the same tone that it does with the original film, except for the candidate in question.

Who is Dr. Meles and What has he Done?

Dr. Meles is a honey badger scientist who believed that Zootopia should separate prey and predator citizens from each other and thus wanted to use an even stronger version of the Night Howlers to turn predators savage, place Zootopia into a state of anarchy, and use said panic to help him gain power and take over Zootopia, presumably by creating a cure to it and pretending to be the hero. To that end, he worked with a bear named Arctos and both traveled to Earth to collect a strain of the Lyssavirus, the genus of the rabies virus and a more extreme version of the Night Howlers. Dr. Meles even modified it to make it even more potent. However, Arctos began to believe that this plan was going too far and thus made an appeal to come up with a less extreme and violent way to achieve their plan of dividing Zootopia. Dr. Meles, no longer needing Arctos for the rest of his plan, betrayed him as a result, infected him with the rabies virus and released him on Earth to live the rest of his days there (Arctos appeared in the beginning of this story when he attacks Luke and kills him, but doesn't bite him, which Dr. Meles regards as a disappointment).

When Luke Barrett arrives to Zootopia, Dr. Meles decides he needs to kill him, due to his interest in medicine and knowledge of rabies, which would jeopardize his plan. To that end, Dr. Meles discreetly tries to run over Luke's girlfriend, Sarah, with a car, recognizing that Luke would jump in the way, which does happen. However, this only manages to injure him and he recovers shortly after. However, everyone in the story is still unaware of Dr. Meles' malicious side and soon, Luke, Nick, and Judy pay him a visit after learning that he knows about Earth. He reveals that the crystal Luke has had throughout the story is his one chance to return back to Earth, while also retelling a fabricated story about Arctos, in which he was the antagonist of his relationship with him and tried to exploit humans.

Although Luke takes some time to think about whether returning to Earth or staying in Zootopia, he goes to Dr. Meles' lab to take him up on his offer to go to Earth after he had a major fight with Sarah. However, it is revealed that the offer was just a trap for him, in which Dr. Meles' polar bear guards subdue him and Dr. Meles tranquilizes him. Upon regaining unconsciousness, Luke talks to Dr. Meles in an extremely venomous tone, which makes him feel disrespected. As a result, Dr. Meles orders his guards to dig their claws into Luke's body, which shuts him up. Then, Dr. Meles reveals all that he's done to Luke, including the aforementioned car incident, which causes Lucas to yell at him in rage. In response to this, Dr. Meles then orders his guards to place hot coals on his body to further torture him and teach him where a "fiery temper" leads him. Once Dr. Meles finishes torturing Luke and kills him, he plans to take his new bio-weapon to Zootopia and unleash it to initiate the next phase of his plan, which would kill hundreds, if not thousands of citizens. Once Nick, Judy, and Sarah discover where Dr. Meles is keeping Luke, where a fight ensues between the trio and Dr. Meles. During the scuffle, Dr. Meles gets infected with the rabies virus and, out of desperation, he makes one last appeal to Luke about returning to Earth, wishing to spite Nick and Judy by taking away who they viewed as a son. Initially, it seems like Luke is going to accept the offer, but he quickly turns on Dr. Meles and throws him through the portal to Earth, stranding him there and leaving him to turn savage like Arctos did.

Does he have any Mitigating Qualities of Freudian Excuse?

Nothing to report here. He's just a power hungry sadist.

Does he meet the Heinousness Standard?

He not only physically tortures Luke in needlessly cruel ways, but he's also a full blown terrorist who wants to spread a virus to Zootopia and kill innocents to secure more power for himself. Easy pass.

Final Verdict

A [tup].

The only part of the Divine Comedy writeup that warrants change is this part:

a realm where beings built for eternal Paradise have been corrupted into murderers drowning in the fiery blood of their victims and cannibals biting into the corpses of their children.

If I may, could I suggest that we change it to this?:

a realm of eternal torment where souls are forced to endure tortures such as being transformed into twisted, broken trees, and feasted upon by harpies, and being submerged in a river of boiling tar.

The name though doesn't need to be changed.

[up][up] On the "missing something about him" complaint, what do you meant by that? Also, the quality of the fanfic doesn't harm the chances of Dr. Meles qualifying; so long as it has a substantial plot and it isn't grimdark, it's fair game.

@nwotyzal With all of these fanfics I keep finding, I just remember all of the fanfics I read years ago, reread them, and then bring them up here.

  • The Divine Comedy: Dis/Luficer was once "the highest of all creatures", above every angel and man gifted by the Highest Joy with immortality, invincibility, super intelligence, and perfect happiness. However, Dis came to love his superiority to the lower angels and only that superiority, making the supremacy of his Father unbearable. In acting on this pride, he convinced his fellow angels and the first humans to rebel against the Love known as God. With his rebellion, the Devil introduced all the evil, suffering, and death that would ever be into the world while condemning any who followed him to Inferno, a realm of eternal torment where souls are forced to endure tortures such as being transformed into twisted, broken trees; feasted upon by harpies; and being submerged in a river of boiling tar. With his angelic intelligence, Dis knew all of this would happen if he carried out his "arrogant rape", yet brought all of the tortures and crimes described in Inferno into existence without any remorse.

Tbh I didn't find anything wrong with Hegel's request...if the entry is getting facts from the poem wrong, then yes they should be corrected because they're inaccurate. Difference between nitpicking and just trying to fix things that are actually wrong.
