Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I think that plagiarism is plenty of reason to request the cut, plus if the work is inacessible, what's the point?

I have no idea what Alessa's Fantasies is, but those seem like plenty of reasons to cut them. Go ahead and cut away.

Haven't posted on here in a while, but I've got a new candidate to propose; I did some searching and don't believe he's been discussed before, which is somewhat surprising considering the fact that the work he's from has been around for several decades.

What's the Work?

The History of the Runestaff is a four-volume Heroic Fantasy / Science Fantasy / dystopian series by Michael Moorcock (best known for his Elric books). It's set on a distant future version of Earth some time after the cataclysm known as the "Tragic Millennium" destroyed much of civilization and reduced the world to a mostly-medieval level of society, albeit with with the presence of magic and surviving pieces of advanced technology (though in many cases one can hardly be told from another). In this world, the Dark Empire of Granbretan - a terrifying regime combining the worst excesses of the colonial-era British Empire and the Third Reich - has arisen in the British Isles and under the rule of the decrepit but immortal King-Emperor Huon has launched a war of conquest across continental Europe, driven by military might and bizarre technosorcery - their ultimate goal is nothing less than the complete domination of the world. Standing against them is a small group of freedom fighters among whom the most significant is Dorian Hawkmoon von Koln, an exiled nobleman from what is today Germany who was caught up in a Dark Empire scheme but escaped their control and now fights against them. Our CM candidate is The Heavy of the series and Hawkmoon's Arch-Enemy.

Who is Baron Meliadus?

Baron Meliadus of Kroiden, Grand Constable of the Order of the Wolf and chief commander of the armies of Granbretan, is one of the most powerful and feared of the Dark Empire's noblemen. With the King-Emperor unable to leave his life-preserving Throne Globe, Meliadus is the primary driver behind Granbretan's military machine, known and feared across Europe and beyond for the terrible atrocities he commits against those unfortunate enough to fall under his control. In many ways the ideal Granbretanian lord, he is utterly ruthless, selfish, ambitious and cruel, caring for no one and nothing but his own advancement and amusement.

What does he do?

Meliadus is introduced when he visits the famed war hero Count Brass of Kamarg in an attempt to recruit him for the Dark Empire; though he initially appears to be a suave and charming gentleman, he shows his true colors when the Count's daughter Yissolda refuses his advances and he tries to rape and abduct her; when this fails, he vows vengeance against both the Count and Yissolda. Returning to Granbretan, he finds the captive Dorian Hawkmoon, who was taken when his province fell to Meliadus's armies, and turns him into a double agent by implanting a black jewel in his skull, which will allow Meliadus to observe him from afar and will eat Hawkmoon's brain if he tries to betray the baron. Hawkmoon is sent to Castle Brass to kill the count, but Brass has enough knowledge of magic and science himself to recognize the jewel and manages to neutralize it, releasing Hawkmoon from its control. Enraged, Meliadus adds Hawkmoon to his enemy list and attempts several times to capture Castle Brass, his war machines utterly desolating the surrounding areas, until Hawkmoon and the Count manage to escape by using an artifact to shift the castle to another dimension.

Meanwhile, the King-Emperor is losing his patience with Meliadus's obsession and promotes his rival, Shenegar Trott, over him; furious at being slighted, Meliadus turns against Huon and decides to seize power himself, using Countess Flana Mikosevaar, the King-Emperor's only living relative, as his figurehead (Meliadus thinks Flana is a solipsistic hedonist who will be easily led, unaware that a chance encounter with Hawkmoon and his friend Huillam D'averc has awakened the first stirrings of a conscience in her heart). Ultimately an Enemy Civil War breaks out across the streets of the capital city of Londra; finally, Meliadus storms the royal palace and shatters the Throne Globe, killing the physically helpless Huon. However, he's unable to enjoy his victory as Hawkmoon leads an attack on Londra; despite a final attempt to reactivate the Black Jewel and destroy Hawkmoon's mind, Meliadus is ultimately brought to bay outside the gates and, after facing Hawkmoon in single combat, at last meets his end. The newly-crowned Queen-Empress Flana proceeds to dismantle what's left of Granbretan's war machine, ending the Dark Empire's reign of terror.

Heinousness? Freudian Excuse? Mitigating Factors?

The Dark Empire is a thoroughly horrifying regime, given over completely to the pursuit of power and pleasure for its own sake, explicitly having no motive for conquering the rest of the world other than "because we can." But even other Granbretanian lords think Meliadus is a psychopath (though, Granbretan being Granbretan, they're still willing to follow him so long as he wins). He's the chief architect of the Empire's war crimes across the continent which leave only burned-out wastelands where once were prosperous communities (described in detail at various points) and bears no love even for his own family; he helped his brother-in-law Taragorm kill his sister because she'd brought shame to their family in some unspecified way, and then when Taragorm himself is killed in the battle against Huon, Meliadus's only reaction is satisfaction and amusement. No other Granbretanian gets the same level of attention (his rival Shenegar Trott comes closest, but still falls behind), nor is as personal an enemy of the heroes; King-Emperor Huon himself, technically the Big Bad until he's overthrown near the end of the last book, does very little himself by virtue of being incapable of leaving his throne. Furthermore, Meliadus is perfectly willing to violate even the few taboos Granbretan retains, chiefly in terms of being willing to actively turn against the immortal Huon, whom most of the Dark Empire regards as something close to a living god, over personal ambition and wounded pride. The closest thing he can be said to have as a redeeming quality is a sort of vague patriotism towards Granbretan itself, but considering how much Granbretan's conquests have personally enriched him, I don't think that counts for much.

Verdict?

Baron Meliadus is the most evil representative of a very evil empire; even considering how awful Granbretan is, he still manages to stand out. I'd give him a[tup].

I don't think that's accurate (the links at Alessa's Fantasies seem right).

Though if we're cutting that due to plagiarism, lemme take care of this when I do that:

  • The Last Lamia: Dr. Theodore Erswick is the sociopathic leader of Avatech's Project Ascension. After forming a Faustian deal with a tribe of Lamias, he has them kidnapped from their beds at night to conduct excessive experiments and Electric Torture on them, then wipe their memories so that his pact can remain intact. When instructed to commit genocide on the Lamia species, Erswick sadistically agrees and has their homes burned and the Lamias slaughtered with guns and poisoned blades. When he comes across the dying Lamia Sovereign, he tortures her by shooting her repeatedly, then burns her alive for his own amusement. He has his soldiers collect all the Lamia corpses to harvest for their DNA, and transports them back to the city of Brookhaven, where he experiments with his genetic rewriting by performing horrific and torturous experiments on innocent people just trying to survive, killing them or transforming them into mindless monsters in constant agony. When Rebel leader Xander makes a deal with Erswick to turn over his allies in exchange for Erswick curing his sister Lani's fatal disease, Erswick betrays him and instead kidnaps all four members of the rebel group, injecting them with his experimental formula. He then mocks them as they succumb to the formula's effects, with Lani burning to death from the inside and technician Brec transforming into another monster. When Xander confronts Erswick, Erswick tortures and kills him with a Tesla coil. He then commands the monster to capture the survivor, Jason, for further experimentation.

Someone rewrote both Sauron and Morgoth on The Silmarillion

Heres what it once was

  • Melkor, later known as Morgoth Bauglir, began life as one of the Valar, but his spite and arrogance precipitated his steady downfall into evil. Beginning by destroying the great lamps of Valinor and creating the pits of Utumno, Morgoth takes as many races as he can and personally enacts hideous, unspeakable tortures upon them until all that remains are grotesque perversions that he can use as his servants. Following his first defeat, Morgoth repays mercy with treachery, destroying the world trees, killing the king of the Noldor elves and stealing their treasures, leading to the deaths of thousands of elves when they pursue him, before setting up his base of operations in Middle-Earth. He delights in corrupting men into darkness, manufacturing and playing off corruption in their hearts to set them against each other and their allies. His "crowning achievement" is tricking and beguiling the first men into swearing an oath of eternal fealty to him, meant to enslave the race forever in body and spirit; mortality is considered a gift for Man, as normally souls of Men leave Arda and Morgoth's grasp. Morgoth launches brutal campaigns of slavery and genocide, including the destruction of Gondolin, the most beautiful and proud elven city, whose citizens are saved solely by the heroism of the city's warriors. He also tries to rape the elven princess Luthien out of nothing more than cruel lust. At one point, he condemns a man to horrible torture and then enacts a curse to see his children grow, suffer horribly and be rejected by both life and death, solely because the man dared to defy him.
  • Morgoth's Bastard Understudy Sauron is a demonstration of how those who were once noble can fall to great evil. Sauron was once a noble Maia who was swayed to Morgoth's side. Over time, Sauron's noble intentions for the world were replaced with vanity and lust for power. In the First Age, Sauron convinced a man to betray his comrades, showing him a vision of his beloved wife... once the man did what Sauron asked, Sauron revealed she was already dead and had his hapless pawn tortured to death as he had promised to reunite them. Upon capturing the hero Beren and his companions, Sauron placed them in his dungeons where he allowed his werewolves to slowly pick the group off, one by one, to torment the survivors. After the defeat of his master, Sauron fled to Numenor, assuming the fair form of Annatar, the Bringer of Gifts and seduced Numenor towards darkness and evil until it was a Morgoth-worshipping theocracy that practiced human sacrifice. This was an act so unholy, Eru Illuvatar, the equivalent of God, stepped in to destroy Numenor. Even then, Sauron was not done, and tricked the other races with the Rings of Power, forging his master ring to enslave all that lived. In the Third Age, he embarked on a genocidal war for conquest, seeking only to feed his lust for domination and megalomania

And this is what they changed it to.

  • Complete Monster:
    • Melkor, later renamed Morgoth Bauglir by the elves, is the Valar responsible for the existence of evil in Arda. He started out as the most powerful of the Valar. Originally good, he wished to create things and fill the Void of the universe, but started making his own devices and decided to defy Eru's themes by introducing his own ideas, trying to drown the other themes. When Melkor was chastised by Eru, he nursed resentment and pride. He was one of the first Valar to descend the world, but instead of helping to build it for Eru's children (Elves and Men), he wanted to take it for himself and be called Lord, starting the first war against his brother Manwë and the rest of the Valar, ruining great parts of the universe and all the works of his kind, and driving with him uncounted legions of Maiar mesmerized by his power (like The Valaraukas, better known as Balrogs, or the Maia Mairon, better know as Sauron, who would become his right hand man). Losing the first war thanks to Tulkas's intervention, he escaped to the void, but came back and built his fortress of Utumno, and then attacked the two lamps, producing untold catastrophe on the world. From there, he would start spreading his darkness as far as he could, and pour as much of his power as he could into the very matter of the world, so he could be able to control it. When the elves awoke, Melkor abducted as many as he could, and throught torture and torment, he created the race of the orcs, along with many other monstrous creatures. Because of this, the Valar attacked him and captured, he was locked away for three ages. When they brought him back to trial, he lied to them, pretending to have repented, and was freed. After a time, he started to sow discord among the elves and against the Valar, which culminated in one of the elvish princes drawing a sword against his brother, and tried to seduce this prince so he could take the Silmarils (jewels made of the light of the two trees, which illuminated the entire Arda previous to the sun and moon creation) for himself. When his plans failed, he went looking for one of his servants, the spirit Ungoliant, and convinced her to help him take on the Valar. They attacked Valinor, destroying the two trees, and then they stole the Silmarils, killing the elvish king Finwe. Having returned to middle Earth, Melkor, now renamed Morgoth, started a war to take over the entire Middle Earth. The Noldor followed him, looking for revenge and trying to take back the Silmarils. This was followed by a 500 years long war, which saw deaths, destruction, genocide, torment and suffrement everywhere. When the sun rised on Arda, Morgoth went to the east to seduce the recently awaken men, and to sow doubt and fear of death and the Valar, so he could seduce them to his service. During the war, he tried to rape the elven princess Luthien, and cursed the human warrior Hurin for defying him, ruining the life of his entire family and many more. Prideful, hateful, and evil to the core, Morgoth was the being ultimately responsible for every single evil thing in the world, and because he could not get his way in the music and create what he wanted, and he because he could not rule the world, he decided he would maim spoil and destroy everyone and everything he had at hand, and if he could, he would have destroyed the entire world and everyone on it (including his own servants) out of hatred it was not his creation.
    • Mairon, later renamed Sauron, The Lord of the Rings and the second Dark Lord, was originally a noble Maia spirit of Aulë, whose intentions were to bring order to the world, but was seduced by Melkor's power and turned to his side. With time, his good and Noble intentions were replaced by evil and malevolence, until he was consumed by his lust for complete power. Faithful to Melkor during his service time, he had a hand in every single work Melkor had on Arda, having a heavy hand in the creation or the orcs and their development. When Melkor was captured, Sauron hide and continued his work. When he returned, he took command as his Lieutenant, helping Morgoth drive the war against the elves, in which he too committed countless monstrosities (standing out his deception of Gorlim and the torment of Finrod's company in his dungeons). He was later defeated by Huan and Luthien, forsaking Morgoth's service and hiding. When the Valar defeated Morgoth, out of fear, he pledged repentance, but he was told he had to return to Valinor. Shamed, and not wishing to forsake his pride, he hide in Middle Earth. Now with a void in evil, Sauron took over as the new Dark Lord, and planned to bring all the world under his fist. He deceived the elves in fair guidance, making them create the rings of power, and tying their destiny to Sauron's ring. When his plan failed, he went to war, exterminating elves, killing the ent wife's, and seducing men under his command. When the Numenoreans came to capture him, he turned himself in, planning to betray them and corrupt them, transforming Numenor into an imperialistic oppressive empire, and eventually sending men in war against the Valar, which culminated in the destruction of Numenor and the change of the world. Back to Middle earth, he went to war again, failing and losing his ring, but retreating and preparing his return all along the third age. Becoming as evil as his master, he ended up degenerating into a monster consumed by his lust of power and domination, willing to do anything to rule middle earth, no matter how heinous and cruel, and responsible for millions of deaths and the suffrement of millions more, and all the evil in the second and third ages of the world.

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."
