Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Now, there are two other characters aside from the founder we see: The Phone Hom Manager and the Manager, an executive for 50 Blessings in their outward appearance as a peaceful organisation. The latter manager is complicit and can murder Jake depending on player choice to cover up 50 Blessings' identity, but that's it. The Phone Hom Manager is likely the guy that facilitates the phone calls, but this is never delved into.

Really, if we saw more of 50 Blessings' nationwide activities, I might actually say no. But as it is? I think they make it. Like, I can't recall any other location other than Miami this stuff takes place in.

It's stated near the end of Hotline Miami 2 that 50 Blessings was able to mastermind the assassinations of the American and Russian Presidents. That alone makes me think they are a powerful and widespread organization if they are able to pull that off.

[tup] Black Tiger villains and Janitors.

What Is the Work?

The Lost Empire is a 1984 B-movie, which served as the first film by master of trash cinema Jim Wynorski (who’s movies we’ve discussed on this thread before, such as The Return of Swamp Thing, 976-EVIL 2: The Astral Factor, and Vampirella). Originally conceived as a low budget tax loss by theater owner Henry Plitt, he ended up releasing it to theaters after having been impressed with it.

Angel Wolfe is a cop who must investigate an evil cult on a fortified island. To get on the island, she must enter an all-female fighting tournament. By her side is Magical Native American Whitestar, who loves reminding the audience that she’s Native American, and the prisoner Heather, who loves spewing tired pop culture references. But while they’re at the island, they realize that the cult leader, who is also an undead wizard, is indeed up to no good.

Hilarious acting, laughable dialogue, some dude who's bushy eyebrows keep disappearing and reappearing after every scene, and a guy in a gorilla suit. The movie has it all.

Who Is he?

Lee Chuck, aka Dr. Sin Do (played delightfully by the late, great Angus Scrimm) is a cannibalistic servant of Satan tasked with collecting him a soul every day, or else he’ll die. Beyond that, Chuck desires to rule the world for his own.

What has he done?

About a century ago, Lee Chuck Was Once a Man who sold his soul to the Devil for immortality. The Devil complied, and made Lee his “hatchet man” forcing him to gather him a soul every 24 hours so he may remain immortal. Thus, Lee has been reported at every major disaster in the last century, including, and I quote, the “Chicago fire, Titanic, Hiroshima, Jonestown, you name it.”

As soon as you let that sink into your head, Lee Chuck seeks the powerful stones known only as the Eyes of Avatar to power a machine of his, which causes things to disappear into nothing, planning on using it to conquer the world. Lee establishes a mind-reading religious cult to gather the eyes for him, while also made to do his bidding. And if that wasn’t enough, Lee has recruited an army of women to serve as his terrorists, luring them to his island, Golgatha, under the name of Dr. Sin Do by promising them wealth if they were to train and fight for him by fighting in a tournament (which we don’t see, btw). Already possessing one of the eyes, the other one is located in a jewelry store, so Lee has his men invade the store, where they kill a few cops; one of whom being Angel’s brother, Rob.

So Angel and her posse arrive at the island and start training with the other women, who are often competing to serve as the winner of the games. Now Lee also has his women occasionally fight to the death against one of Lee’s strongest men, with Lee watching. Setting his sights on Whitestar to feed on her, Whitestar discovers that the women who try and stop him are sent to a building called “The Pit”, a slave ranch where the losers, runaways are brainwashed and sold as sex slaves—we don’t see the process, but at one-point Angel and Heather find a prison cell filled with the brainwashed women. Lee invites Whitestar for dinner—where Whitestar finds various skeletons and learns that Lee doesn’t like regular meat and regular wine, preferring human flesh and blood—where he causes her to pass out by flashing her. At least she didn’t see his dick.

Angel’s boyfriend Rick somehow arrives on the island, but is immediately captured by Lee’s men, accidentally giving him the second Eye of Avatar. Lee, while giving a speech to his fighters about how they should worship Satan or die, forces Rick and Angel to fight each other until Rick is close to death so that Lee will grant him the coup de grace. Realizing that they’re actually lovers, he sends orders his minion Koro to kill them both. A massive fight ensues between the women and Lee’s guards, but Lee himself makes a getaway back to his lair. Once Angel arrives at his lair, Lee reveals that he’s actually an immortal skeleton man wearing human flesh, tearing his face off just to prove it to her. Keeping Angel hostage, she shows him his new laser canon powered by the jewels, which he plans to conquer the world, hoping to kill Angel with his canon so that he can keep his immortality.

Cindy, one of Lee’s former fighters, tries to kill him, but Lee just vaporizes her for being in the way. Rick comes from nowhere, decapitates Lee with an axe, and saves Angel. Lee’s head says more corny dialogue, but then a portal to Hell opens up and some… thing grabs Lee Chuck’s head, dragging it back to Hell because he failed to give the Devil a soul. The island collapses and everyone who matters is saved. But Lee Chuck’s voice is heard, claiming that he shall return.

Yeah, no.

Redeeming Qualities?

While he’s a servant of Satan, he’s more of a fanatic who only sees him as a way to gain immortality. A psycho supporter if there ever was one. And even his whole “kill people to keep living” doesn’t meant much, as he didn’t have to cause all those historical incidents and kill hundreds, if not thousands in a single day—he only had to kill one soul a day to keep living, yet doesn’t care because he just loves killing.

Heinousness?

While a just servant of Satan, he’s still the most prominent threat of the movie, having been responsible for everything that goes on in the movie.

Conclusion

I think he’s a keep.

[down]You are right, Miraculous, Lee Chuck was once brought up before by Elfen, but downvoted for generic villainy.

However, I disagree. He’s shown to have a sex slave farm, is fairly sadistic, and he is quite a charming bastard with a pretty unique rap sheet.

Another Die Hard EP

What's the work?

Die Hard: Year One is an 8 issue comic mini-series and a semi-canon (or non-canon at all, since there is a quite a lot of Continuity Snarls in the comics, that never mentioned in the movies, when they should, like McClane dealing with terrorists before the first film or his service in Vietnam. Hell, studios outright planned to make their own prequel movie that would tell a "true backstory of McClane", but cancelled it later) prequel to the first Die Hard Movie. Set in the year of 1976, during the time when John McClane was a simply rookie in New York City, the whole mini-series split in two parts, first arc (issues 1-4) set during McClane's rookie days and second arc (issues 5-8) set when he was promoted to police detective.

Now my candidate from this comic is the very first terrorist that McClane encountered in his life (at least according to this semi-canon comic) - Alan Douglas.

Who is Alan Douglas?

A former employer of Walden Ford (an asshole millioner), who left his service and become a hippie, Alan Douglas started working on a plan to steal Ford's money, while claiming to do this to better the world (without explaining how). To this end he planned to buy a mini-submarine from Ira Lewis and make a deal with him. He then sended couple of his associates (two corrupt cops) to seal the deal, only for them to kill Ira, when he upped the price of mini-sub. They were seen by a young woman Rose, whom they chase and planned to kill, only to lose. Alan, hearing about this, gets shocked by the turn of events, but then saying that it doesn't matter, since their names will be at the newspapers after they finish his scheme. Ordering them to proceed as planned and kill the witness, if they see her, Alan has them sneak on board of Walden Ford's yacht, take everyone hostage (the fireworks during the 1976 bicentennial celebration over New York Harbor helped to make this invisible to people outside the yacht) and then wait his arrival. When Ford calls the security, it was revealed that they working for Alan now and they knocked out Ford. As Alan comes on board from mini-sub, he makes a speech about saving Earth from millioners like Ford, only for McClane (who was also on board for the party) to openly thinking that this is a lie, which is also what Alan's henchmen are thinking too, correctly deducting that Alan only cares about money (which he is extracting from Ford in millions). As Alan's henchmen kills some stuff of the yacht, Alan orders them to plant a dynamites on the yacht, planning to blow it up, along with dozens of hostages on it, only for McClane to deactivate each dynamite and sneak it in to Alan's mini-sub. When McClane starts a shootout with Alan's mooks, Alan takes Rose (McClane's love interests in this arc) in to hostage and orders the surviving corrupt cop in his service to deliver money to his mini-sub, only for it to explode, allowing Rose to free herself and McClane to fight Alan (not before killing his remaining mooks) and then beat him and arrest him.

Heinousness?

Alan is a villain of the first half of this comic mini-series, which canonity to films is in big question due to some contradictory and then Continuity Snarls with the movies, which allows me to interpret it as its own thing. And with that I say that Alan is the most heinous antagonist in this comic, planning to blow up entire yacht full of people and being responsible for several murders before. The main villains of second and last arc of the comic are gang, who cut the power to the city, solely to steal money and kill few people.

Mitigating Qualities?

None. His "saving the Earth" stuff is called as bullshit by everyone in the comics (including his associates) and considering how he never explains how stealing millions from Ford and then blowing up yacht full of innocent people is going to save it, i fully consider it's simply a "cover" which he uses to simply satisfy his greed.

Conclusion?

I will say Yes.

Sure to Lee.

Alan...not the HIGHEST body count, but taking it on its own, we're probably talking at least dozens, so I'll give a slight yes.

So that's 3 film baddies (2? I think Stuart at least got enough yes votes), the book baddie, 3 game baddies I think?, and this comic guy. That's 8. We can go with the image of Hans killing Takagi.
