During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. " to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Ipslore and Breanna
Also congrats on the new guys. Good work
I've only read Hogfather and Going Postal myself. They were fun. Teatime was fun as hell as a badguy.

"Making screw-ups and mistakes was I ever really good at. Because everything I touch went to hell."There's no point. It's a straight adaptation of the book.
BTW, here's what's pending (minus Lighty and Scraggle's stuff):
- Cargo (2017): Vic Carter (Age)
- Terry Lynch from the second episode; Cameron Pell from season 2's first 2 episodes (Age)
- Iplsore the Red (captainmarkle)
- Brennus, Enemy of Rome (JG98)
- Diego Gaspar Navarro (Tyk)
- Top Cow Shared Universe (and Mephisto expansion for Devil's Reign) (VVV)

to Ipslore the Red.
Hi. I thought I'd try something new and propose a new quote for the Quotes page regarding none other than our good friend, Judge Claude Frollo. Frankly, there are probably at least half a dozen quotes from and about him that would work pretty well, but since refreshing my memory by re-watching certain bits a little while back, I always felt like this was an especially great one:
So what do you think? I personally think it would be a great addition, even with the other quote from Quasimodo already being there. Hopefully, I'm not stepping out of line by simply proposing this... if I am, I apologize.
Edited by Devoted2Nintendo on Feb 10th 2019 at 2:37:54 PM
Parts of it could work, but I've never been a big fan of the quotes needing actions to go with the context.
By the way for Hogfather.
Could we remove these lines in Teatime's entry.
- Complete Monster: Jonathan Teatime is a Psychopathic Manchild who horrifies even hardened criminals who’ve earned their reputation on murder. Lord Downey let him into the Assassin’s Guild out of pity that his parents died, only to later suspect that he killed them. If he is sent to kill someone, he will mercilessly slaughter them, their family, and their pets. He kills any accomplices he has the instant they're not currently useful to him, not excepting Ankh-Morpork's most gifted lock-picker who was an incredibly valuable asset to the Guild. The most terrifying thing about him is that he honestly doesn't understand that his sadistic behavior is wrong. He sees no difference between having a friendly chat with a man and stabbing him to death.
I've read it. Teatime is way too sadistic to not be aware of what he's doing. So it's inaccurate.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Okay, i remember bringing this up before and i was ignored, but i ask again, does this quote seriosly belongs to CM Quotes section?
—Croup, on himself and Vandemar, Neverwhere
It doesn't seem to decribe anything actually monstrous about villains and seems more in "Hate Sink" category (without any context anyway).
Edited by VeryVileVillian on Feb 10th 2019 at 9:40:56 PM
I can understand that. It's just that this is one of those cases where adding descriptions of the actions is the only way to fully understand what's happening, especially with regards to Frollo's response to Phoebus dousing his torch. But hey, if you can find a way to make it work with less descriptions, go right ahead and edit it. As long as it's in a format that's to your liking, I'll think it'll make a great addition.

Yeah, I always felt those lines didn't belong. If that's true, surely he can't qualify as it would mean he was to insane.
On the subject, does anyone else feel Teatime could do with a partial rewrite? Whilst an effective overview, it doesn't really go into many of his actual deeds.
Hi all - I'm not actually new, I've been here before but just less active and less mature. Thanks all the same.
I could do a draft write-up of Ipslore unless anyone else fancies a go?
Trans rights are human rights. If you don't think that, please leave.@ Devoted, What Lighty said.
@ VeryVile, I'm all for cutting. Sounds more like "Croup becoming aware the CM cleanup thread is a thing and commenting on why he has not mitigating factors".
@ Markle, All yours, dude! Good first job!
I'd not be opposed to a Teatime rewrite.
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsHonestly its not the best as its unique as it doesn't say anything he actually does during the novel itself.
I'll maybe try myself if I have some free time later this week when I do another ep but I wouldn't mind if Somone tried to rewrite it before me
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Ragear, Vic, Brennus, and Ipslore. I hadn't really considered Ipslore before but seeing all his crimes laid out like that he really is an easy keeper.
Another unauthorized example, this one from Secrets Not Meant to be Kept:
- Complete Monster: Plunkett and her staff at Treehouse. For nearly twenty years, they run a child sex ring disguised as a respected day-care center. To terrorize their victims into silence, they first assign the kids with live rabbits to care for, then kill the animals right in front of them.
to the ones who got Upvoted so far. Abstain on the rest
Who's everyone's favorite CM they've E Ped?
@11 The entry lists a whole group. Thoguh if it's made clear Plunkett is in charge I could see an EP in the future.
Edited by Kylotrope on Feb 10th 2019 at 11:58:56 AM
Things are really about to get Fun around hereWoah Plunkett sounds vile.
Anyone wanna look into that one ?
Yeah the entire group cant count but if Plunkett is clearly the leader than she takes the full responsibility.

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."My favorites are Oscar Espinosa, Janga, Pirate Master, and Wolf Spider. So basically all of them.
If the only issue with the Hunchback of Notre Dame quote I proposed is that it could have less actions to go with the context, as I stated before, others can feel free to edit it, but otherwise, I'd like more opinions on whether or not it's a good one for the Quotes page. That way, once it's edited, it can be put up by whoever's in charge of that.
Speaking of good quotes, since it seems to be okay to simply propose them, I have one more to suggest that's far newer, and coincidentally, doesn't require descriptions of actions to go along with it. This one is from Sendak:
What's the consensus on this one?
While I've only done 6 effort-posts, out of which only 3 have been approved, I would say my most recent one, Lord/Chancellor Bartlow from Tales of Zestiria the X, is my favorite. For one thing, I found it pretty easy to sum up all his heinous actions, partly because I had a bit more experience by then. Plus, I liked that he wasn't a very obvious one, especially at first. However, when he started framing not only Princes Alisha, but all the Ladylake soldiers that happened to be associated with her, as traitors, and sent out more soldiers to eliminate them for preventing his war efforts and saving lives on both sides... yeah, the more I reflected, the more confident I was that he could make it. But that's what made it so interesting; I had to re-visit those key moments to make sure I was proposing someone who could genuinely make it, as well as to confirm that his claims about saving lives by carrying out a preemptive strike were really just a cover for war-mongering to gain the citizen's approval and secure his own power.

My favorite CM that I got passed is Brainiac from Justice League/Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. Mostly because he's my favorite Superman villain and he got teamed up with Lord Zedd, my favorite Power Rangers villain.

Solidified yes to Ipslore. Discworld seems... Interesting I guess
