Voltron does considerable damage to Sendak's fleet, but Sam realizes Sendak's plan — to combine the blasts from each individual Zaiforge cannon into one giant beam that will destroy Earth. The team moves to destroy Sendak's ship, but are interrupted by beams from the bases that launched the cannons. Pidge devises a plan to use the reflective plates built by the Galra to deflect the Zaiforge beams as the Garrison works on dismantling the bases and attacking Sendak.
The paladins are able to deflect the cannon fire for some time, but the plates eventually break from the pressure and the beams combine. The Atlas intercepts the combined beam. Shiro infiltrates Sendak's ship and is able to disrupt the crystal through Sam, but is knocked unconscious. The paladins awaken and destroy the individual cannons, while the MFEs succeed in obliterating all the bases. This means that the only remaining hostile ship is Sendak's, which is now free-falling towards Earth.
On said ship, Sendak engages Shiro in battle as the lions guide the ship to an uninhabited area. As the dust clears, Sendak stands to finish Shiro off, but Keith leaps out of the Black Lion and kills him. The paladins cheer, but their happiness is short-lived as an unidentified object crashes towards their location.
Tropes:
- Bad Boss: The Paladins try to get closer to the Galra Cruisers as a way to protect themselves from the beams, believing Sendak won't dare shoot at his own ships. Turns out he does.
- Beam-O-War: The 'shield' variation. The Atlas' particle barrier tries to hold off Sendak's Planet Destroyer rays for as long as possible.
- Big Damn Heroes: The Black Lion and Keith drop onto Earth just as Sendak is about to kill an incapacitated Shiro.
- Character Death: Keith kills Sendak before he has a chance to kill Shiro.
- Continuity Nod: Shiro remarks that it's not the first time his brain was used as a computer port, referencing his time with the Galra.
- Gory Discretion Shot: When Keith takes out Sendak, you see their shadowy silhouettes when Keith slashes him.
- Hope Spot: Sendak is dead and the Earth has been saved. Then the meteor arrives...
- Meaningless Villain Victory: Shiro loses when he goes to face Sendak, badly. But it makes no difference since Sendak is killed by Keith before he can finish off Shiro.
- Taking You with Me: After his Planet Destroyer has been successfully made useless and his ship damaged beyond repair, Sendak decides to just have it crash into Earth to do as much damage as possible - with him still onboard.
