Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Hey everyone. So about a year ago we accepted Adam Taurus from RWBY for good reasons. Well, a character short detailing his past and showing his path to radicalization was just released. I didn't see any mitigating factors, but I figured I'd provide a link and let you all see it as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st5OBtPfVcA

I appreciate that I'm even being trusted with doing an effort-post on any of these minor antagonists from Smallville, but initially, I wasn't sure if it would be considered a waste of time to do that since there was always a chance they were already discussed. The fact that no one seems to be shooting any of them down is mildly encouraging, but I'm still intimidated on doing proper effort-posts for multiple reasons. One, I've never done it before, so it may not turn out very well, especially if it's about a minor character from something I haven't seen in a while. Two, I mentioned at least 6 characters, so while they are all minor, the idea of doing an effort-post on all of them only makes it more intimidating. Three, I can't watch Smallville as easily as I used to since I don't own it anymore, so I would have to find another way to watch it to give the most accurate account possible. Four, as anyone who's read my longer posts can see, I have trouble condensing my important points and being as short and to-the-point as possible. I just have this need to not leave out anything that seems important or that I think will help others understand my point of view, so my writing style ends up being really wordy, at least for some people.

However, despite all of that, here's what I can say for sure right now; at this point, among the characters I've suggested, the ones I'm the most confident about qualifying are James, Bob and Jason, whereas I'm less confident about Ian, Sean and Harry. After reminding myself of their exact credentials through some clips and synopses', I've realized Jason actually has more credentials than I thought, especially for a completely normal human being, while Sean has much less than I thought he might have, especially for a "meteor freak". I don't know if I can elaborate on any of them immediately, but I can try, and hopefully in the near future, especially if I find a way to watch their respective episodes (hopefully legally, but I may have to settle for a way that sin't, entirely) but even then, Smallville is quite a long series, and I simply don't have time to re-watch everything to make sure I'm not missing any other characters that might be comparable. In short, having other people here who have seen it and can weigh in with their opinions would be invaluable, and pretty much necessary here.

My advice, Devoted? If you're intimidated by EP's, try a few on single works, such as films, before going to serialized ones. Much easier to write everything down.

[up][up]Sure added part in bold

  • Brigands M.C: Ralph "The Führer" Donnington is a Neo-Nazi in charge of the South Devon Chapter of the titular biker gang. He is introduced trying to assault and possibly kill his son Martin for spitting on a member's patch, only stopping when the member appeases him by having Martin fight the much more skilled Dante Scott. The Führer later threatens to kill Dante's father when he disagrees with his plans to have the clubhouse torn down for new facilities. When Dante's parents kill one of his thugs, he retaliates by killing them and their two older children, and the younger two only live when Dante escapes though the window with the baby, accidentally injuring said baby in the process. To eliminate Dante as a witness he sends a gang member to try to bomb the foster home that Dante was staying at. When the Führer finds an undercover cop in his group he takes him to a field to execute him, until the cop tells him that he doesn't want a murder of a officer on his hands. Instead the Fuhrer has him cruelly dumped outside the house that Dante's family was murdered to mock him for failing to get justice for them. When protagonist James Adams gets a job as a server for the clubhouse, the Führer threatens to kill him for delivering tepid food as a sick joke, and admits he does this with every new server.

Actually now that Im thinking about it. Has the human trafficking ring from book 7 ever been discussed. Sex and rape crimes are pretty rare for the series (Especially when its on children which is the case for a few of there victims).

Special thanks to Bugfragged for giving me a permission for writing Barclyss entry as this is considered to be one of my passion project in the past:

  • Forever Home: Barclyss is the rogue Tren General who is revealed to behind all the bad things that the Xero and his companions has to endured. Starting as a normal street urchin with an intellectual potential, Barclyss lost any respect towards the human life after studying biology books. After he joins the Judgement Faction, he first decimates the peaceful town of Ellea. And when the Corporal of the Blaze Soldiers were captured by the Judgement Faction and refuses to subjugate to Barclyss, he then spares the Corporal so that he could hear all the screams of his men being butchered in the Arena. When Xero tries to challenge Barclyss in order to save the Tren General, Barclyss beheads the general out of spite. It was also revealed that he turned the people that he slain into his slaves for Judgment Faction. In addition, he was also responsible for the loss of his childhood’s friend eye. When the heroes tries to form the pact with the other country, Auria, Barclyss takes a mobile "Aquadome" fortress to Heyama's shores and has it fire on a building complex. After Barclyss confront the heroes, he then launches a spell towards the duo and throw the warning shots out of a petty amusement. After Barclyss’s army is defeated, he used a weapon that could decimate most of the planet’s surface by causing a nuclear winter. Although claimed to be the victim of his nihilistic grief and said that survival is the choice, Barclyss does all of his atrocity in order to slake his sadistic and nihilistic pleasure.

Lmk if there are some things that could be factually wrong or try to truncate some unecessary details and fixing the grammar so yeah. Also, here's Zio's writeup too:

  • Phantasy Star IV: Zio is the mysterious dark figure who is revealed to be the leader of the cult that worships Dark Force. He first appeared in the game where he tries to threaten the principal who tries to sent the rescue team into Zema. When the heroes went into Zema, it was revealed that all of the inhabitants turned into stones. When the heroes to find the elixir that could cure Zema’s curse, it was revealed that Zio decimates the town that contains the elixir and several other towns. In addition, he also decimates the bridge that could connect to other cities by summoning a meteor. When the heroes tries to shut down a power plant known as Nurvus, Zio then takes the android who could shut it down as a hostage. It was also revealed that Zio brainwashed some of the people in Motavia so that they could joined his own cult and preaches to them that he will create a better world after he destroys Motavia. After the heroes fight Zio for the first time, he then unleashes the Black Energy Wave towards the heroes which causes one of the heroes, Alys, getting mortally wounded. A fanatical sorcerer at it’s finest, Zio doesn’t care if all living things in Motavia including him getting wiped out in order to satisfy the Dark God that he worships.

Btw, one thing for sure: Zio is not the Big Bad of the game! Until then, can I add these writeups to the drafts?

[up]Elfen, I added Kail's writeup and did some grammar fixes and fact-checking for your own writeup.

  • Forever Home:
    • Barclyss is the rogue Tren General who is revealed to behind all the bad things that the Xero and his companions has to endured. Starting as a normal street urchin with an intellectual potential, Barclyss lost any respect towards the human life after studying biology books. After he joins the Judgment Faction, he first decimates the peaceful town of Ellea. And when Corporal Slash of the Blaze Soldiers is captured by the Judgment Faction and refuses to be subjugated by Barclyss, he then spares the Corporal so that he could hear all the screams of his men being butchered in the arena. When Xero tries to challenge Barclyss in order to save the Tren Captain Farrell, Barclyss beheads the captain out of spite. It was also revealed that he turned the people that he slain into his slaves for Judgment Faction. In addition, he was also responsible for the loss of his childhood friend's eye. When the heroes tries to form the pact with another country, Heyama, Barclyss takes a mobile "Aquadome" fortress to Heyama's shores and has it fire on a building complex. After Barclyss confronts the heroes, he then launches a spell towards the duo and throw the warning shots out of a petty amusement. After Barclyss’s army is defeated, he uses a weapon that could decimate most of the planet’s surface by causing a nuclear winter. Although claiming to be a victim of his nihilistic grief and saying that survival is merely an option, Barclyss really does all of his atrocities in order to slake his sadistic and nihilistic pleasure.
    • General Kail is the chief subordinate of the aforementioned Barclyss, and is just as omnicidal as his master. As a high-ranking member of Tren's Judgment Faction, Kail joins Barclyss in shelling innocent villages, murders prospective faction recruits, and summons a sea monster to sink a civilian ship, all to slake his bloodlust and to give the faction more undead slaves. During the attack on Heyama, Kail personally oversees the destruction of the country's largest housing complex, only expressing regret that the Aquadome's cannon doesn't allow him to savor his victims' deaths up close. Using his alchemy and scientific knowledge, Kail acts as the chief engineer of the orbital fortress Affliction, which he and Barclyss commandeer to bombard the planet with the explosive Cosmite mineral. Once his boss is defeated, Kail takes charge of Affliction by himself, launches the largest Cosmite shard, and tries to ram the fortress into the surface in order to finish off the planet's few remaining lifeforms. Cruel and self-centered, Kail seeks to betray Barclyss and rule an utterly silent world as its Sole Survivor.

Thanks for the advice Demon Duckof Doom. I don't necessarily think these characters will be hard to write everything down for, since almost all of them only appear in one episode. It's just a matter of finding a way to see them again and finding the time to do that. Also, while films characters might be easier, I can't think of any real candidates right now that haven't already been approved. Come to think it, Lighty Snake briefly mentioned that he/she would "vote" on these other characters, so maybe I don't even have to do an effort-post on all of them? For now, the closest thing I have to a plan is that I'll at least re-watch the episodes with the characters I'm more confident about qualifying, and hopefully, it'll be easy to keep it a modest length since they each have only one episode's worth of crimes, and their complete lack of redeeming or sympathetic qualities or an excuse of any kind, which I can definitely confirm already, should make those parts... super easy to write. As for the ones I'm less confident about, I can probably watch them too if I find a way to watch any episode I want, but if I'm still just as sure that it won't go anywhere, I'll just give short explanations on each of them and why they don't seem heinous enough with the few credits they have. This is all assuming, of course, that no one else does anything about it.

Alright, Scraggle and I have a co-op coming. First Wave' was an early 00s series on Sci Fi. The premise? Cade Foster is a young man whose wife is killed thanks to an alien invasion, murdered and replaced with a 'husk' Cade is forced to destroy. Cade learns of an alien invasion known as The Gua; a race that has infiltrated humanity in numerous host bodies all over, and have framed Cade for murdering his wife. Cade realizes the aliens can be predicted, at least loosely by the prophecies of Nostradamus (who was an alien whose prophecies were a warning of the Gua)...he teams up with a conspiracy theorist named Crazy Eddie, armed with the knowledge of the Gua, Cade sets out to expose them and stop...the First Wave of their invasion.

There are at least three potentials, one of which will cover an episode of Season 1 of 3: Blind witness. Dr. Reid being our villain (The Gua use human names on earth)

Who is Dr. Reid?

Reid is a Gua scientist installed in a human body that sets up shop in a hospital in the inner city. Making the hospital his private little kingdom, Reid begins preying on the lower income members of the community. Ostensibly, Reid is treating them, but in truth? Reid is a vicious supremacist and sadist even by Gua standards, taking humans and carving them apart, rearranging their organs, attaching alien parts to them. All of this is done in the most agonizing way possible, keeping the vicitms alive so Reid can study the reactions all in the name of 'figuring out' human biology and comparability for when the Gua kick off the Second Wave. Cade discovers a woman in the hospital, Alikah, is the one successful experiment of a sort: Reid had worked on her eyes, and without meaning to, Alikah can now see the Gua in their new bodies. Cade soon realizes it and decides he has to save Alikah while exposing Reid.

Now, Reid's experiments are seen and even worse? The mortality rate is nearly 100 percent. When he's done with the experiment, the luckless innocents are killed. Or they die from the experiments, whereupon the corpses are thrown away like garbage. Reid is found by Cade, where he intends to kill Cade and Alikah both, gleefully describing his experiments and all he's done with a sadistic flourish. Cade, however, manages to burn him alive, though reid survives and attacks them again, homicidally furious. In the end, however, Cade manages to kill the mad doctor and like all Gua, his body disintegrates upon death.

Heinousness?

Now, the series has a decent one. The Gua have conquered planets, and their leader is outright genocidal. There are a lot of killers, manipulators and more here, with the Gua planning an invasion that'll kill a ton of people. Reid, however? His crimes are unique. He's the only real Mad Scientist in the show, a consummate sadist who conducts experiments that are horrific and fatal on dozens of innocents, in the name of 'science.' It's a unique niche for the series.

Mitigating Qualities?

Zero. Reid is a sadist and a monster. Now, the Gua are a racist species and are not fond of races they conquer or destroy, but...a big part of the series? The Gua have their own standards and complexity. Gua can have honor, can love one another, and one major character is Joshua, a Gua soldier who begins to realize his people are wrong and instead begins fighting against their plans, joining Cade himself. There are Gua who disapprove of treating humans poorly, and a rebellion among the Gua aiming to create a more peaceful government. Ergo, no issues here.

Conclusion?

Easy keeper for the good doctor.

Yes to Reid, easily. For my Gua keep... now, as Lighty mentioned, there's a sympathetic Gua named Joshua, who's secretly trying to call off or stall the invasion for the sake of humanity while pretending to hold up allegiances with the rest of the Gua. However, towards the end of the second season, Joshua is found out and condemned to punishment in indefinite stasis. In his place? Cain.

Who is Cain? What has he done?

Cain is one of the leaders of the Gua, a high-ranking Acolyte second only to Mabus — their leader — in power and viciousness. When Joshua's efforts fall through, Cain takes his place by taking over his husk (or assumes an identical one... there's a retcon later) and assuming direct operation to find the book of Nostradamus. Cain tricks Cade into coming into a false meeting where he promptly traps him in a virtual simulation, experimenting on his mind and putting him in a virtual reality in order to extract the location of the book. Here we see the kind of Bad Future that will happen if Cain gets the book: Cain spearheads the second Wave, leading to the death of 19 million people, with the rest forced to be compliant and branded with any who speak up executed. Cain forces Cade to watch his friends murdered in the simulation to break his spirit, and when one of his associates brings up the possibility of causing irreparable damage to Cade's brain? "Who cares?" Cain says, so long as he gets the book. Cade manages to escape with the book of Nostradamus already swapped out... but Cain's hot on his trail.

Cain continues his efforts to lead in the second Wave, focusing on bringing Mabus' consciousness through an orb into a husk modeled after Cade's own. When one of the other Gua reneges on the mission and steals the orb, unwilling to be complicit in a plan that would kill so many people, Cain tries to track her down and murder her himself. Cain also takes the time to confront the two guards who let her leave the outpost, accepting one's excuse that she pulled rank over him to flee... and promptly executes the other one in front of him to "pay for his sins," with the implications clear should the guard fail again.

Cain continues to ruthlessly hunt down Cade, threatening to murder his friends and tracking him down to a well-publicized talk show that could expose the Gua. Cain brainwashes two cops who find him one the shield, using one as a literal living bomb to kill himself and explode to burst a hole through the door, and commanding the other to stand guard and indiscriminately murder anyone who comes near the premises. Cade evades Cain again through a complicated plot involving faking his own death, with Mabus' husk killed in the process as Mabus derides Cain for his continued failures... no worries, though. Cain's tracked Cade to a resistance group called the Raven Nation, kidnapping and torturing a person with ties to them with their location before brutally murdering him as well. Cain takes a team to slaughter their way into the Raven Nation, but their caught in an ambush and forced to flee. To make sure he doesn't go quite uncompensated? Cain spitefully murders their ally, Clement, before turning tail and running.

Cain's final appearance, in the fourth episode of the third season, sees him track Cade to the quantum pocket Joshua's being trapped him, keeping Joshua in a "Groundhog Day" Loop where he repeatedly fails to save Earth from destruction as punishment for his treachery. Cain takes a sadistic delight in repeatedly murdering Joshua through these loops, mocking him on his lack of nerve, before he and Cade outwit him. Cain's shot and left for dead in the loop... only for the loop to restart. And as the episode ends, Cain suddenly realizes he's taken Joshua's place, for the rest of foreseeable time with none the wiser...

Any mitigating factors?

Nope. Laughable. Cain's just a sadistic asshole bad even by the standards of the Gua. He gets up to a lot of really bad murder, torture, and sheer petty dickery while he's onscreen, and he's the most vocal about spearheading a plan that would cause the death of countless millions purely to see the human scum underneath him under his heel. Easy pass.

Conclusions?

Easy keep. Lighty'll take Mabus after this.

Thoughts?

[tup] Cain, and Reid pending one teensy question - is he aware, by human moral standards, of how much harm he's doing? I ask because he sounds quite a bit like Mithras from SMT Strange Journey, who was DQ'd for, among other things, seemingly not understanding that, say, humans die if you slice their heads open until after he'd already done his experiments.

Reid's very, very cognizant of how much his victims are suffering there. So are the rest of the Gua. It's why several human sympathizers among them exist.
