Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Eh, screw it, I'll do it with this week's:

  • In the novel adaptation by Toshiki Inoue, Takeshi Asakura is even more depraved than his original counterpart. Killing his mother when he was still an infant, Asakura graduated into a Serial Killer by the age of six, killing two other children specifically on their birthdays and two counselors. Living in a homeless colony where he was idolized by the people, Asakura repeatedly stabbed the village's elder in the head and committed a killing spree targeting those who loved him, mutilating a man even after the latter had hugged him. While hiding, Asakura attacked a group of children with an ax and hung the bodies of five police officers from tree branches. Arrested for killing countless victims, two of which were Miho's parents, Asakura accepted the offer of becoming a Contractor merely because it gave him an opportunity to torment people without having to worry about consequences, going as far as to remove Raia's intestines. Destroying lives simply because everything smelled horrible to him, Asakura was a heartless savage who wished to fight for eternity.

It'll be at the end of the tree I assume?

What happens to Novel!Asakura, anyway?

Just finished watching the 1997 version of Berserk. Out of curiosity, does Griffith/Femto count in both this and manga version or only the latter? Mostly, he has a similar laundry list of crimes but I'm not sure whether or not he was played more sympathetic in this one, given that the friendship of Griffith and Guts is one of the most central themes in the Golden Age arc. Also, as the series end rather abruptly, there is nothing to indicate that Casca was pregnant etc, meaning that Griffith's crimes cut short after the Eclipse goes down. And no, I haven't read the manga yet although I have planned to do so. Given that Wyald and Ganishka don't even exist in the anime, I'd assume that the YMMV page mostly concentrates on the manga version when it comes to C Ms.

[up] The 1997 version and movies version count Griffith as a CM yes. It was the actual rape of Casca and sacrifice in the Eclipse that made him count, everything else was just the icing on the cake.

[up] Well, that was his MEH-crossing anyway. It looks like he did quite a bit more (I'm pretty sure that one rape, no matter how awful, wouldn't be enough in the world of Berserk).

[up] In the 1997 anime and movies there's none of the other C Ms though, so I think the Eclipse would have been just enough to grant him onto the list as the heinous standard would be slightly lowered. Lighty would probably have a better answer though.

It was there; I didn't know you were gonna just edit that down. You're in there now, so I'll put it here:

  • Initially emerging from the shadows as mysterious "Red Hood One", he recruit members in to his "Red Hood Gang" by blackmailing and threatening families and friends of middle and upper classes individuals from Gotham. Using his gang to promote his philosophy of randomness of life and pointlessness of existence, Joker spreads chaos and anarchy around Gotham by robbing banks and killing people left and right. When Batman starts foiling his schemes, "Red Hood One" begins to brutally murdering members of his gang who failed to stop him. Planning to create new radioactive, flesh-eating poison and explode it at different locations around Gotham, "Red Hood One" takes over Ace Chemical Processing Plant only to be foiled by Batman and Gotham Police and as a result of gunfight falling in to toxic chemicals and transforming in to the Joker. As Joker, he continues to spread chaos over Gotham and later starting killing spree of comedians and conflict with Riddler, which resulted in numerous civilian casualties, because he find himself unable to laugh for a time, which was caused by his inability to defeat Batman. During the time of his carrier Joker crippled Barbara Gordon and kill Jason Todd (Second Robin) just to hurt Batman. After being absent for over a year, Joker makes his return by attacking the Gotham City Police Department to retrieve the face he had cut off, murdering nineteen police officers and Mayor Hady's police guards. Reenacting his old crimes, the Joker poisons many people and blows up the Gotham reservoir. Hunting down the whole Bat-Family and trapping them in the Batcave, Joker leaves them soaked in gasoline while he forces Batman to watch as he attempts to set them ablaze before Batman stops him and cause him to fall down the waterfall. Surviving the fall, Joker decided to finally kill Batman for real. Discovering the Lazarus Pits, he uses it to regenerate his face and create new form of "Joker Venom" and infects the entire Justice League with it, making them extremely aggressive and have them attack Batman as a distraction, which he uses to infect the whole Gotham with the same virus, "jokerizing" most of its citizens. Joker plans to burn down the entire city as Batman tries to stop him, which resulted in them mortally wounding each other during a fight to the death and seemingly dying in the depth of Gotham’s underground.

And now...

  • Night Fire: Rafael Drake is a beloved philanthropist who secretly plots to remake the would into a corporatist dystopia answerable to himself. The CEO of the environmentally-friendly corporation Phoenix International, Drake poses as a respected anti-nuclear weapons activist who uses his company's wealth and resources to decommission nukes; in reality, he takes these weapons for himself to be used in a private arsenal against anyone who resits his takeover. Key to his plan is a new space weapons platform developed by the US, and James Bond is put on Drake's case after it is discovered he has stolen the weapons guidance chip for the satellite. When one of his subordinates tries to turn informant for MI 6, he orders not just the man's death, but those of his innocent household servants as well; he later murders his mistress by defenestration, and forces Bond to watch, after she is exposed as a deep-cover French agent. As his plan commences, he rockets into space to commandeer the weapons platform personally; it and his private arsenal giving him enough power to wipe any dissenters off the face of the Earth.
