Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So I got a reply from the troper who added the Tales of Hearts example and he said he needs to refresh his memory before he effortposts the example so we'll wait on that.

ACW, for Mongul's entry, could his Bald of Evil pot-hole be replaced with something more fitting, such as Galactic Conqueror. Him being bald isn't exactly a major aspect to his character.

Alright... I've been looking over Bravely Default and its sequel for a while and I've finally gotten some stuff together. First thing's out of the way first: Fiore de Rosa needs to be cut, posthaste. While there's nothing to really disqualify him in the first game, in Bravely Second, Fiore develops some sincerely altruistic qualities and is hinted to go through something of a Heel–Face Turn. That largely speaks for itself, so if nobody contests that, I'll be filing a cut for him sometime.

Now, with that said, no worries on that... there may be a few qualifiers we've overlooked until now: the two villains of the first game and the two villains of the second game. Now, I'm still getting a lot of stuff together with the second game and I'd appreciate it if anyone told me if Anne or Providence counted there, but until then... I've looked up these two characters on the thread and it seems they largely haven't gotten much sufficient discussion. So, with my knowledge of the characters in hand, allow me to get the remaining candidates from Bravely Default out of the way.

What's the setting?

Bravely Default is a sort of spiritual successor to Final Fantasy and takes place in the fantasy land of Luxendarc. After the corruption of Luxendarc's resident elemental crystals, a motley band of heroes consisting of the vestal of Wind Agnes, survivor of catastrophe Tiz, flamboyant amnesiac Ringabel, and ex-Eternian knight Edea form to heal them. Aided by the crystal fairy Airy (creative name there, yes) the heroes venture through the land of Luxendarc, battling the forces of Eternia and even going through multiple parallel worlds to activate the crystals and heal Luxendarc. And come the ending of the game, we learn the true meaning of what will happen if the crystals are activated... the crystals link all these parallel worlds together so that an ancient evil may destroy them all. This is all brought upon by this ancient evil's steadfast servant, the Evil One, the Piercer of Boundaries, whom is none other than...

Airy!

Who is Airy? What has she done?

Yeah, turns out Airy Lies after all. Eons ago, Airy and her sister Anne were created to serve the god Providence, but Airy got ambitious and backstabbed Providence, coming instead under the service of the ancient evil Ouroboros (who I'll get to below). Airy's responsible for engineering the entire plot to allow her master to destroy all of reality and reach the Celestial Realm.. to do this, Airy has been traveling from parallel world to parallel world, manipulating the parties in each to activate the crystals, thus destroying the boundaries between worlds and linking them to Ouroboros. Her actions open the Great Chasm in each world, thus making her responsible for the destruction of the village of Norende and all the damage the earthquake that causes the Chasm to open. Once she's finished purifying the crystals of each world, Airy butchers the party of that respective world and moves onto another, in particular murdering the Edea of Ringabel's world. Airy's been at this for millions of years and has gone to thousands upon thousands of worlds, and by the time she's finally revealed as the true mastermind, she's almost succeeded in allowing Ouroboros to gain access to the Celestial Realm. However, the party finally gets wise about her manipulations and confronts her on it in the end game during the activation of the final crystal, which can roll a few different ways depending on which ending you get.

In the false ending (where Agnes decides to destroy the crystal in one of the loops instead of playing into Airy's plan to activate them all in each world), Airy reveals her true, monstrous form and challenges the party to a battle. Airy remarks that it was so easy to manipulate the heroes before almost effortlessly slaughtering (the attack she uses to finish everyone off is even called Slaughter) the entire party except for Agnes. Agnes, however, manages to destroy the crystal, cheating Airy out of her plan for another five millennia. Angered, Airy attacks and kills Agnes while commenting that death was far too merciful a fate for the party, before deciding to bide her time in the Dark Aurora with the intent to eventually find new pawns. Fortunately, the powers that be restore the party to life and they head into the Dark Aurora to confront Airy. Airy's initially agitated they've survived... but then decides that torturing the heroes for five-thousand years to pass the time suits her well. When the party reaches her, Agnes, utterly heartbroken, asks Airy if all the time they shared together was false. Airy responds with a few cries of agony and seems to be possessed, giving the party a Hope Spot that Airy might actually be a pawn of something else...

...then Airy reveals she was just fucking with them and she really is as evil as she appears. So pretending to be possessed there? Just to grind Agnes' shattered will into the ground further. Airy taunts Agnes how it was so easy to manipulate her in the thousands of worlds she's deceived and murdered her before she and the party finally engage in battle which ends with the heroes victorious and Airy defeated even at her full power. In her dying breath, however, Airy reveals she is but a servant of Ouroboros and states one day, he will cross over, before fading away and dying.

...In the true ending, Airy successfully tricks the party into activating the crystals across all worlds, thus linking all the worlds in reality to Ouroboros. When it's revealed the Great Chasm hasn't closed, Airy laughs, reveals she's deceived everyone, and shifts into her nightmarish true form. The heroes defeat her a little more handily this time, causing her to flee to the Dark Aurora to gain assistance from Ouroboros. Begging Ouroboros for a power boost, Airy is granted her ultimate form and combats the heroes once again, this time with Ouroboros' power preventing her from dying. However, Ouroboros soon grows tired of Airy's incapability of stopping the warriors of light and he eventually just decides to devour her. Airy pleads for her life to no avail as Ouroboros does away with her, leaving him as the final threat to all worlds.

And that leaves us with our final boss for the evening... the God of Destruction, the Bringer of Ruin, Lord Ouroboros.

Who is Ouroboros? What has he done?

Ouroboros is the great eldritch god Airy serves and the Greater-Scope Villain of the game. Ouroboros has his harbinger Airy link the tens of thousands of worlds that comprise reality, with his ultimate goal here to destroy all creation, invade and conquer the Celestial Realm (the realm of the gods), and reshape reality in his own twisted image. His reason for doing this? He considers the fact that the Celestial Realm is so peaceful to be boring and seeks to bring chaos, suffering, hatred, corruption, brutality — stuff he considers exciting — onto the Celestial Realm, before reshaping reality into his image into a plane of chaos. He only shows up in the true ending when Airy succeeds in her goal, staying unseen until the last act of the game. As mentioned above, Ouroboros bestows Airy immense power to combat the warriors of light but quickly tires of her and instead just devours her after she wears out her use (considering her as little else but cattle). Ouroboros finally takes physical form as a sort of constantly-changing mirror of the heroes, explaining his plot and his goals before engaging the warriors of light in combat. Once they manage to best his mortal form, Ouroboros, excited that he's finally getting a good match, drags everyone into his domain, the Infernal Realm, to see his eldritch true form.

The final battle initiates, and the heroes, with DeRosso's help, fight against Ouroboros to save all reality. DeRosso sacrifices himself to fracture Ouroboros' core and stop it from regenerating. As the battle rages on, Ouroboros makes a point of literally destroying and devouring entire worlds to power himself up in the battle, devouring two on the spot and mocking the heroes for their inability to fathom the casual end of an entire world before threatening to destroy their own out of spite for defying him and continuing to annihilate others as the battle progresses. Ouroboros continus to obliterate world after world until Agnes eventually just snaps and begs Ouroboros to stop. Ouroboros laughs and prepares to cast the heroes into the void, but the other worlds suddenly rise up and empower the heroes, allowing them to fight back against Ouroboros. Ouroboros manages to open a portal to the Celestial Realm at last (implied to be, mind-bogglingly enough, the real world) but the heroes destroy him just in time. Ouroboros fades away and dies still fruitlessly vowing to bring terror onto the Celestial Realm.

Any mitigating factors?

None for either. Neither Airy or Ouroboros have been talked much before, surprisingly... the closest I could find a reason for cutting a previous unapproved version of Airy is that it was a little dubious if she had moral agency after being created by Providence. This... was a flimsy reason to cut. Literally nothing indicates Airy has any moral agency issues and the fact she actually betrayed Providence to begin with actually hints more to the fact she's more than capable of making her own moral decisions. Sans that, the closest thing she has to a redeeming quality is her fanatical loyalty to Ouroboros and we've ruled similar cases as not disqualifying. So ultimately, I think Airy gets a pass.

Redeeming qualities for Ouroboros is even more laughable a concept. Ouroboros avoids being a Generic Doomsday Villain both by virtue of his horrifically petty motive and his penchant for sadism and he is beyond heinous enough for his short screentime. You can't really say much else about a god who destroys entire worlds purely to break the spirits of those he fights against, so there's nothing to talk about here. Ouroboros passes seamlessly.

Conclusion?

I wager both Airy and Ouroboros are solid, solid keepers, and I'm sort of surprised they haven't been talked about much until now. I'll look into Bravely Second sometime soon, hopefully.

Thoughts?

Qada is still very much a CM. He's among the most heinous of the Eternian forces, especially given his resources compared to Airy and Ouroboros, he doesn't appear in Second, and the only nod we get to his fate after Default states he's still as remorseless as ever, so we're left with nothing to disqualify him. I might crop up a new write-up for him when I write up Airy and Ouroboros should they be approved... the current one is a little flimsy.

'Yes' to Airy and Ouroborus.

Anywho, by popular demand, here's a rewrite for New 52 Mongul:

  • Mongul is the sociopathic ruler of the weaponized moon, Warworld, and one of the most wicked villains in the New 52 continuity. Having become a firm believer in "survival of the fittest" after witnessing an animal brawl end in blood and death as a child, Mongul immediately murdered his baby brother, followed by his own parents when they tried to get him counseling. In the present, as the cruel leader of a hellish planet known as Warworld, Mongul uses it to attack dozens of planets across the galaxy, massacring the populations of millions then subjecting many of them to And I Must Scream fates with his Black Mercy plant, and uses any survivors as soldiers, slaves, or raw material to be harvested. Along with this, Mongul runs gladiator games where any losers will have their entire races exterminated. When any enemy leaders specifically ask him to surrender before they are fully aware of his power, Mongul personally rips their heads off, mounts them on pikes, then displays them as trophies, of which he has hundreds. Later, after failing to turn all of Earth into a Hive Mind of chaos under his control, Mongol coldly kills his son, Jochi, for failing to live up to his reputation, and eventually lays a trap for the Sinestro Corps, hoping to massacre them and force any survivors into his thrall, all while taunting the helpless Sinestro about the torture he intends to inflict on him and his people. An utter darwinist disgusted with everything weaker than himself and angered by anything stronger, New 52 Mongul is just as bad as any of alternate incarnations could be.

Alright... Airy and Ouroboros are going smoothly, as I expected, so shall we get to the chase? Should there be no objection, here's my two and a rewrite for Qada...

  • Bravely Default: Many of the game's villains, including those from the Duchy of Eternia, are rounded and have sympathetic traits. Alas, this is not the case for the following trio:
    • Dr. Qada, the Salve-Maker of Eternia's Black Blades, is the Duchy's resident mad scientist and an obese psychopath who stands leagues over his more sympathetic compatriots. An utter sociopath willing to sacrifice leagues of Eternia's own men against the order of his Noble Demon superior Kamiizumi in the name of research, Qada's experiments with the horrific toxic mist - tales of which are relayed through the ghosts of his victims - killed thousands of men (including some of Eternia's own swordbearers) and ruined parts of the land itself, with Qada studying the effects of his work on the infected corpses. Qada, as a medic, also helped to heal both sides of Luxendarc's conflict, purely so he could use their healthy bodies as test subjects for further research. Qada's ambition extends to planning to wipe out the Council of Six with his equally-treacherous compatriots Fiore DeRosa and Erutus Profiteur to take over Eternia themselves, with Qada planning to unleash a fatal plague through Luxendarc and being completely unsure as to whether he wants to be remembered as a gloried hero for providing an antidote or a vile, disease-spreading madman. The vilest of the Eternian forces in every world he's seen in, Qada's own superior Kamiizumi is revolted by him and kills Qada himself in one of the parallel worlds as a testament to Qada's endless, amoral thirst for knowledge, no matter the cost.
    • Airy, fittingly titled as "the Evil One", is the Piercer of Boundaries and chief servant to the evil god Ouroboros. Posing as a helpful fairy ally to the warriors of light in their mission to reactivate Luxendarc's corrupted crystals, Airy is in truth behind the opening of the Great Chasm and the wide swath of destruction it caused throughout Luxendarc, traveling from world to world and manipulating the heroes into purifying the elemental crystals and thus linking those worlds to Ouroboros. Airy takes sadistic delight in manipulating the heroes like puppets and butchers them after she is done with them, having repeated the process with tens of thousands of worlds over a course of millions of years. Once she's ousted as Ouroboros' servant, Airy, in the false ending, quickly slaughters the party while taunting them about how she's manipulated them. Forced to rest in the Dark Aurora after being cheated of purifying the last crystal, Airy, once confronted by the revived heroes, decides to torture the warriors of light for five-thousand years to bide her time and pretends to have been possessed purely so she can shatter an already despondent Agnes' will further by revealing she is exactly the remorseless demon she appears to be. A deceitful monster under her seemingly innocent, childish exterior, Airy's singular wish was to allow her master access to the Celestial Realm in order to destroy all reality.
    • Ouroboros itself, the God of Destruction, is responsible for every catastrophic event in the game's plan in its plot to wreak havoc on the Celestial Realm. Unseen until the game's true ending, Ouroboros pulls the strings behind his servant Airy and oversees her link the tens of thousands of worlds that comprise reality to him in a bid to break the boundaries between them, utterly destroy all of them, and bring chaos to the Celestial Realm to recreate reality in his own twisted image. Ouroboros devours his pleading servant once he finally tires of her, dismissively compares her to cattle, and, in the final battle, obliterates world after world for the sheer purpose of breaking the heroes' spirits, nothing less than utterly gleeful once they beg him to stop. Ouroboros' sole motivation is boredom and a lust for chaos, strife, hatred, and suffering — things he considers exciting — and goes down as the greatest evil in the story.

How do those look?
