Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Alrighty....Dismissed this guy awhile ago, but felt a bit more conflicted thanks to certain Rule changes. But Star D Med me to remind me of him, saying he was atleast worth a proposal now. Wich gave me the confidence to do this...

Whats the work?

RWBY:Roman Holiday is a recent novel and installment in the RWBY franchise, chronicling the origin of Roman Torchwick and Trivia Vanille(Or as the fans should know her, Neopolitan). None of The Big Bad Ensemble of Hei Xong, Lil Miss Malachite or Trivias evil father Jimmy count, for either flunking the Standard or having mitigating qualities

But there is a brief villain from near the start Torchwick encounters, that could be worth talking about....

Who is Paul Parrot?

One of Lil Miss Malachite rivals, leader of the Parrot and Mouse syndicate, Paul killed his Uncle to take control of the syndicate, and then start having his men collect 'Capivara Grimm', Horrific Rat-Mouse Grimm creatures from Menagerie, He would bring anyone he disliked to the basement for the Grimm to feast on, this gained him a reputation for how anyone he brought to the basement didn't come back up.

Later on, Paul is approached by Roman Torchwick, who was supposedly attempting to give Paul one of Lil Miss daughters, as a sign of him wanting to leave the Spider gang and join Parrot. Telling Paul that he could use Melanie as a Hostage / Bargaining chip to end his war with Lil Miss. This fails for a few reasons, one of which being that Paul wasn't interested in stopping the war, wanting to keep it going as, despite it being bad for Buisness it reminded him of the 'good old days' when gangsters could do whatever they wanted, And Paul was able to see that Torchwick was bullshitting and actually loved Melanie. Paul then tells Roman how the other Malachite Twin had been sneaking into his HQ earlier, to get in his basement and find his rumoured 'Treasure'....And he simply let her succeed. He lets them run off to the basement where they would find the Grimm, he explains what it is and that the Syndicate had been acquiring these things for 'Quite some time', Torchwick himself is able to piece together that the Cameras throughout the basement weren't simply for security, 'Paul liked to watch his victims die'.

Thankfully, Roman is able to come up with a plan of his own to get them out of this, after getting the girls to control there emotions, and fighting the grimm a bit, he gives Paul a brutal "The Reason You Suck" Speech about how he didn't 'Earn' Any of this, pointing out that Paul didn't build the syndicate, just killed his Uncle, who got it from his father, and Paul didn't even capture the Grimm by himself, before saying how Lil Miss was superior, and was loved and respected for it. This sends parrot into a Furious Villainous Breakdown as he constantly demands the Grimm kill them, But as Torchwick points out he never actually commanded the Grimm, just relied on the fact his victims would be scared when he dropped them in the Basement. Paul's anger, per Torchwicks plan, is strong enough to redirect the Grimm to parrot himself, Killing Paul's fearful gang as it does so as Parrot is forced to Flee.

The Spider Syndicate soon arrive as well as the authorities, the Spiders take care of the Capivara and Paul himself is arrested by Mistrals police.

Heinousness

Alrighty, it's RWBY..We all know the damn Standard at this point, that said? For an Brief Villain Gang leader(Especially one who, as Roman says, is a Pathetic piece of shit who has to ride off of others accomplishments to do anything)....His Niche is having people fed to his horrific Rat grimm, having cameras record it because he enjoyed watching them die, and tries doing this to both Roman and the young Twins.

The only problem he's had before is Offscreen Villainy in regards to the Times he's done this before. But with the new rules? We're told about his reputation for doing this, bringing people down to his basement where they never come back, he's been doing this for awhile. Torchwick Notes on the Cameras"He bet they were for more then security, Parrot liked to watch his victims die", we see both the Grimm and see him try it with Roman and 2 13 year olds. Under the new rules? It could be enough.

Mitigating Factors?

Oh god no, Parrot is a giggling Sadist with Dick for an FE or redeeming features, notably the only mention of his family is him having killed his Uncle to Take over.

Final Verdict?

With the new rules, as Star said, he's atleast worth a shot.

A Tumblr post containing his scene if you'd like to review for yourself.

[tup] to Ethan Jefferson and Parrot

Hey guys, so Its been a while since No Time to Die came out and I’m surprised that no one had least discussed this guy Valdo Obruchev and I thought that he may be at least worth an EP regardless if he gets approved or not so here it is starting with the movie that he was in

What’s The Work?

No Time To Die is the 25th film in the James Bond franchise and serves as the final outing of Daniel Craig playing the character. The basic premise is that James Bond, who has left active service with MI 6, is recruited by the CIA to find a kidnapped scientist, which leads to a showdown with a powerful adversary. Of course the adversary Lyutsifer Safin doesn’t count do to having redeeming qualities as Lighty said in the MB forum, but I think the scientist is worth the shot given that he created the weapon. Valdo Obruchev.

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

Valdo Obruchev is a Mad Scientist who was hired by MI 6 to create a bioweapon that consists of nanobots that spread like a virus through other people, but are only lethal to those whose DNA they are coded to, called Project Heracles. However Valdo had been secretly working with the terrorist Lyutsifer Safin hoping to use his bioweapon to cause death on a much more massive scale.

Valdo would be informed by Safin that SPECTRE has come to kidnapped him which Valdo goes along with getting kidnapped uncaring that many of the MI 6 agents were getting killing trying to protect them. Valdo would then he made to craft the nanobots by SPECTRE only to program the nanobots to kill off all the members of SPECTRE taking great joy at seeing his bioweapon kill so many people.

Valdo would then be apprehended by Bond and Naomi only for their ally Logan Ash to reveal himself to be a double agent working for Safin and betrays the heroes which leads to the death of Bond’s friend Felix, while Valdo flees to Safin’s headquarters in an island where he mass produce his bioweapon for Safin.

By the time Bond and Naomi arrive at Safin’s headquarters, they learn that Valdo has already create so many nanobots where he and Safin plans to transport them into ships around the world to and have the nanobots kill millions of people, while Valdo lacks any of Safin’s well-intentions only interested in how much death his bioweapon can cause.

Bond and Naomi capture Valdo where he immediately sells out Safin to Bond to save his own hide, while telling them that they won’t be able to stop his bioweapon to wipe out millions of innocent lives, while bragging that he can wipe out Naomi’s entire race, which leads to Valdo’s death while Bond does manage to stop Valdo’s weapon from being unleashed but at the cost of his own life

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

All that was known about Valdo was that he was hired by MI 6 to create a deadly bioweapon only to betray them and ally with Safin where he gives Safin his virus to use to cause millions of deaths.

He’s not even truly loyal to Safin as he immediately sell his boss out to Bond and Naomi just so that they won’t kill him, and just wants to see how many people that he can kill with his virus. So yeah he’s a murderous Dirty Coward with zero excuse nor redeeming qualities to justify all the millions that he wants his weapon to kill

Heinousness

Now it’s Safin’s plan to use Valdo’s weapon to kill millions but he doesn’t count do being a Magnificent Bastard, having a sympathetic backstory, along with well-intentions behind his plans. However Valdo isn’t a Big Bad and his recourses are only limited to what his employers give him, but with what recourses and screen time he does have, he proves to be a nasty piece of work, who I think can stand out.

Valdo has none of those qualities and it is he who created the virus for Safin to use being is gleefully supportive of having his virus wipe millions, if not more, off the planet, let all the MI 6 agents protecting him die, took sadistic joy in having killed all the members of SPECTRE, granted they were bad people but they had done nothing bad to Valdo, not to mention he threatens to wipe out Naomi's entire race with the bioweapon, while imply that he plans on doing it in the future

Final Verdict

I’ll leave it up for you guys.

For Parrot, I'll let others weigh in on if he's heinous enough, but honestly? This doesn't seem like offscreen at all. There seems to be enough of a pattern established even BEFORE the rule change. Look at all the crime shows where, say, we don't see all of a Serial Killer's victims.

Obruchev...unless someone convinces me otherwise, I see no reason he shouldn't count.

  • Injustice (2021): The Joker here lacks the sole redeeming quality of his original counterpart. After getting bored from losing to Batman, he decides to go after Superman, murdering his best friend Jimmy Olsen and kidnapping his Love Interest Lois Lane. The Joker then brainwashes Superman with a combination of kryptonite and Scarecrow's fear toxin, which he had previously killed Scarecrow for and left a trap that kills the Flash. The toxin makes Superman kill Lois and her unborn child. Just for pleasure, The Joker links the nuke's trigger to Lois' heartbeat destroying Metropolis, killing over 11 million people.

Come to think of it, I'd say Obruchev stands out just enough to warrant a [tup]. He's killed by means of Nomi pushing him into the tank he keeps the toxin in, killing him probably not-so-instantly ("Know what time it is? Time to die."). I also say he stands out more compared to Ash and Cyclops as well.

Both involved in Safin's scheme, all Ash has really going for him otherwise is killing Felix. All Cyclops has really going for him is he works for SPECTRE trying to kill Bond and Madeleine and then quickly switches sides when SPECTRE is wiped out by Safin and Obruchev. If he'd been involved in wiping out SPECTRE too, I'd be for him counting as well.

So that'll be 5 CMs and 3 MBs this Bond fought.

Cinder is one of Salems lieutenants and gains the Maiden powers, like the Standards high thanks to other guys and it's a totally valid concern but Cinder particularly is dimensions above his tier.

I think his Niche his fucked enough for a Gang boss, especially one that, as brought up above is a Pathetic weasel who relies on others accomplishments to do anything, my only concern was offscreen stuff before. Especially as the other crime boss dudes don't get as nasty as that.

I believe that certain candidates may be worthy of re-litigation in light of the loosened restrictions on Offscreen Villainy. Let's get medieval on their asses.

What is the work?

Pulp Fiction is a 1994 Crime Drama by Quentin Tarantino.

It is a non-linear film about various members of the LA criminal underworld, and their lives on and off the clock.

In the 5th chapter, "The Gold Watch", the boxer Butch Coolidge (unintentionally?) kills his opponent in the ring despite having been paid by Mob Boss Marsellus Wallace to throw the fight.

While attempting to flee with his girlfriend Fabienne, Butch goes back to his apartment for the titular watch, which, to put it tactfully, was an heirloom from his deceased father. While he is there, he kills Vincent Vega, the smackhead assassin waiting for him.

He encounters Marsellus at an intersection, and after a brawl which ends up in a pawn shop, they both end up captives of two vile men who have no connection to the underworld whatsoever...

Who are Zed and Maynard, and what have they done?

Zed and Maynard are pawn shop owners with a shared clandestine penchant for acts of rape.

When Butch Coolidge and Marsellus Wallace bring their altercation into their pawn shop, Maynard captures the duo, binding and gagging them both while they are unconscious.

In the basement dungeon, Maynard douses the duo with water to awaken them, while Zed comes downstairs, has Maynard awaken "the Gimp", one of their other captives.

Playing a racist version of "Eenie, meenie, miney, moe," Zed chooses to take turns with Maynard raping Marsellus first, leaving the Gimp to supervise Butch.

Butch breaks free, and initially attempts to escape, but decides to grab a weapon and go back for Marsellus. While Maynard is watching Zed rape Marsellus, Butch stabs Maynard with a katana, interrupting Zed and taunting him with the katana while Marsellus recovers.

Marsellus tells Butch to step aside, shoots Zed in the testes, and threatens to perform hideous torture on Zed before allowing Butch to walk away on the condition he never returns to LA.

Mitigating Factors?

Uhh...Zed loves his motorcycle, Grace? Maynard doesn't let anyone outside of him or Zed commit murder in the pawn shop?

Ok, so let's pretend that I am treating these as mitigating factors:

  1. Zed caring about an inanimate object is essentially a manifestation of him caring about himself.
  2. Maynard ensuring that he and Zed are the only people committing murder in his store? Pragmatic villainy, plus they own the joint. It is not surprising that someone would want to have control over what happened in their establishment.

Zed and Maynard certainly don't indicate any care for each other outside of a shared enthusiasm towards sexual depravity. Maynard dies, and Zed is more worried about his own survival.

Rewatching the scene, Maynard matter-of-factly states that he thinks the Gimp is sleeping, and Zed tells him to wake him up. Again, there seems to be no genuine indication of care towards the Gimp whatsoever.

This is the full scene, minus the pawn shop altercation.

As for whether the Gimp is fully complicit, it initially seemed ambiguous within the film itself whether he is fully co-operating or whether he was coerced. Tarantino claims the Gimp was captured and conditioned. However, the notion that the Gimp is a willing participant seems less likely of an explanation each time I watch it since there is literally no dialogue indicating that he is a willing participant, and given what the duo does to Marsellus, and intends to do to Butch, I am more inclined to believe that in all likelihood, the Gimp has been Conditioned to Accept Horror as a captive and implied sex slave.

Their atrocities are played with the requisite gravity, with Marsellus and Butch being portrayed as traumatized by the ordeal, and when they are killed, it is presented as a form of well deserved retribution on the part of Butch and Marsellus.

Heinousness?

This is where it gets tricky.

Butch kills a man (accidentally?) in the boxing ring, kills an assassin sent to kill him, gets into an altercation with Marsellus, neutralizes the Gimp who was watching him, and impales Maynard, who had it coming due to capturing two men and intending to tag-team rape them, holding the other rapist, Zed, at katana-point. That said:

  1. Butch is a generic anti-hero despite having few if any resources.
  2. Butch's victims are largely fellow criminals who he takes on in self defence.

Marsellus himself is a crime boss. He is familiar with torture and murder, having sent assassins to kill a man who betrayed him and the latter's accomplices. Marsellus also tries to have Butch killed for lack of co-operation, and gets into a fight with him. Additionally, Marsellus shoots Zed in the groin and plans to torture him for the rape, but frankly:

  1. Marsellus is a generic mobster in terms of heinousness and resources, with a body count of four crooks, one offscreen defenestration, the attempted murder of Butch, and the (public service) murder of his captor. He would need to have more large scale or personal villainy, such as onscreen torture, forced prostitution, sexual assault, organ theft, or mass murder (attempted or successful) by arson with a minimum of 12 victims in order to pass the baseline, to fully pass the baseline considering his resources from my perspective. This guy owns LA. He should have a much higher bodycount than 6 spread out and one attempted.
  2. We do not see what exact tortures Marsellus inflicted, aside from shooting Zed in the groin.
  3. Regardless of what horrific torture Marsellus didn't perform on screen, Zed had it coming, since he tag-team raped Marsellus, and intended to do the same to Butch.

Assassins Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield kill at least 5 people combined, but they too are generic in terms of heinousness and resources. They do not torture any one. They do not rape anyone.

Honey Bunny and Pumpkin rob a restaurant, stealing people's wallets. They threaten to massacre the establishment, but they are bluffing.

Winston Wolfe disposes of dead bodies. He causes no deaths, performs nothing so horrible as the destruction of a car and disposal of a corpse.

That said? For what it's worth, these two are just hicks who have a rape dungeon, have assaulted and captured at least two people (onscreen), tag-team raped at least one person (onscreen again), and based on their dialogue, blatantly intend to tag-team rape the other once they are done with the first. Additionally, if their words are to be believed (and I am strongly inclined to believe them regarding previous rapes, if not murders, given what they do to Marsellus and intend to do to Butch), they have committed rape (and possibly murder) before, with at least one previous alleged victim by the name of "Russell" (with nothing to indicate that Russell was a co-conspirator). The fact that they have a rape dungeon, and the fact that they ambiguously name-dropped a previous captive in addition to holding the Gimp captive as an implied sex slave by all appearances (if the fact that they have a rape dungeon, and they keep the Gimp in a bondage suit is any indication), backs up their suggestion that Butch and Marsellus are not their first targets.

Additionally, they are the only rapists in the film, tag-team rapists to boot. If we were to ignore the fact that they keep the Gimp captive by all appearances and are implied to sexually abuse him, one could argue that they primarily target two members of the LA crime scene, but even then:

  1. They did not know who they were dealing with.
  2. Even if they did hypothetically know who their victims were, what Zed and Maynard do is godawful enough to make what happens to the two of them well deserved, as portrayed by the narrative.
  3. Even taking their unwitting victim choice into account, they are still the only sexual predators in this particular film.

Regarding resources, my hesitance lies in whether their resources, or even their actions, make them stand out that much by the standards of a smaller scale Crime Drama, since they do somewhat distinguish themselves as the only sexual predators in the film, with an attempted victim count of 3-4.

Previous discussion seems to have established that the other Tarantino films do not matter in this evaluation due to loose canon (Heh. Loose Canon).

Verdict?

I felt (and still do feel) they were worthy of discussion, at the very least. However, I am still not entirely sure whether they are sufficiently heinous.

That said I can see arguments for and against; I thought long and hard before making this effort-post, and while I hope that we can have civil discourse, I understand if people are unwilling to have this discussion. Yet Again.

I hope I covered everything that needed to be covered, and anything that wasn't covered before.

Regardless of whether or not they keep, they are definitive scumfuck rapists who have it coming.

I hope this will be the last time we discuss these candidates. If they are declined this time, feel free to put them on the NA list.

Was juuuust about to be answering this PM about Parrot tonight, apologies for the wait on that one, Snoke! So, here's my only real issue with Parrot: Offscreen Villainy has been loosened for sure, buuut we also have zero idea an even approximate number of people he's fed to his Grimm. If this were a vacuum with no other really heinous villains it'd be one thing and I'd happily see him go up, but when his enemy is Roman himself—who goes on to do a loooot of nasty stuff himself—and the canon has plenty other nasties, I'm slightly unsure how much wiggle room we wanna allow to a guy who absolutely has fed people to his Grimm...but with absolutely no idea if that means "5 people" or "50 people". Trying to feed youngsters to it is notable though, so I'll continue to think on him a bit, but I'm a bit hesitant due to that tidbit of not having even a slightly solid number. We know it's happened multiple times, we know Parrot is a sadist who likes to watch, but...

I'll lean sure on Obruchev for now, tentatively.

As for Parrot, we may not have an idea of victims... but we do know there are more, and it's enough to cultivate a reputation, and while Roman is nasty, he doesn't quite do anything like feeding people to Grimm, especially when the victims are around 12. It's a gross enough niche that I can say yes, if only tentatively, and if he goes up then he's essentially the new baseline for the franchise.
