Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up][up] That...is technically true (same for the video games I think), but that's a little different than something like Maciste.

Also, Bullman, I'll pothole Arkham!Joker, but there's no real good way to pothole Arkham!Batman without taking out a pothole, unless I remove the Overarching Villain bit. Up to y'all (EDIT: Or I can get it in the quote).

  • Ragnarøkkr is the High King of the Shadowed Ones and the true mastermind of the Ragnarok cycle. Having fed off and orchestrated destructive cycles for millions of years, Ragnarøkkr would lead the Shadowed Ones in trapping Cerividia and the Nine Realms in one where those who live in them destroyed over and over so the Shadowed Ones can feed on the energy their deaths creates to empower themselves. Ragnarøkkr would condemn others to horrible fates for minor slights and even give one of his wives and some of his daughters to his psychopathic cohort Surtr to be personal playthings and Sex Slaves for displeasing him, or just do it himself. When High King Kaldr uncovers the cycle, Ragnarøkkr would attempt to brutally kill him and his allies so he could trap them in a reincarnation cycle where each life is worse than the last as punishment for defying his will, and attempts to take Queen Mzazi as breeding stock and rape her. Forced into his true form, Ragnarøkkr would raze several armies and ultimately attempt to destroy the Nine Realms in a final act of spite when cornered.

Yes to Rasputin.

Yes, it was. He's one of the Shadowed Ones that ACW linked to.

Also, update on that: their proper profile entries haven't been done yet unlike Ragnarøkkr's (which was done before the arc he started as the main antagonist of) and the Codex writers told me to wait, as there are likely more crimes they've committed that will be shown there.

Ragnarøkkr's is good to go though.

I got another Lupin III for us, too! We've overlooked Part V in the CM department. I think I've found two guys, one of whom I'll be splitting with STAR.

My candidate is the Arc Villain of "Episode 2" (which spans episodes 7-10), José.

Who is José? What has he done?

José is the ringleader of a small group of mercenaries hunting for a black notebook containing dirt on a huge number of France's higher-ups, something that could throw the nation into chaos if its contents were exposed. José initially hunts for the black book on behalf of the head of the GDSE, only for José to smugly backstab him and throw in his lot with the corrupt right-wing politician Calvess instead.

José has his mercenaries murder Lupin III's detective friend, Camille Bardot, in order to retrieve the book. With the black notebook in his hands, José uses it as leverage against the government—and as a kicker, José promptly has terrorists start bombing the shit out of France so they take him seriously. We see out of a few incidents an entire cathedral blown up with at least twenty-two people killed, and a skyscraper bombed in public. José intends on having these terrorists keep wreaking havoc and killing more people until public favor swings toward Calvess and his authoritarian rhetoric in the next election.

José's also a darling boss—when one of his minions survives a bullet one and drags themselves for miles just to rejoin José, José's reward for their perseverance is to subject them to Electric Torture until they slump over, near death. Later on, José has a minion who failed to properly take care of Lupin executed, shortly before José himself dies blowing himself up to take Lupin and Albert to the grave with him.

Any mitigating factors?

Maybe I'm getting jaded when the guy who has terrorists murder dozens across France and tortures and kills his own minions regardless of their loyalty seems kinda tame for this thread, but I think José's skimming the line for the standard. Insofar as I'm aware Part IV and Part V are the only Lupin III series to be in direct canonicity with each other (Lupin wears the same jacket across both series—baffling!) and Part IV includes lovelies like Eric the "Unkiller" who earned CM stripes by filling up a hospital ward with people he's tortured to near-death, and Fago who conditioned a little girl into his personal assassin and Sex Slave. Beyond that, Part V has a child porn gang in the backstory (granted, they're not onscreen for long and none of the members have any individuality) and STAR's candidate, a terrorist willing to blow up an auditorium full of kids.

Wiiiith that said, these are standouts across over 50 episodes where the usual baddies are ineffectual Smug Snake-types or total anti-villains. José packs a noticeably larger body count than other baddies with vastly more resources than him—the evil high priest playing puppetmaster behind the throne of a small country in the third arc has his hands in a civil war, but he's far from the only cause of it and he doesn't do much himself. The show's Big Bad, Enzo Bron, is the richest man in the world who mistreats his kid and wants to use his app PeopleLog as a means of global control via social media, to the point of societal upheaval...and the only times he ever attempts murder are in attempting to dispose of Lupin and co. He even gets a (clumsily-done) Heel–Face Turn.

José's a pretty flavorless candidate, but he's also noticeably more of a scumbag than the rest of his company. Very, very few people at his stature—he's just, in the end, a mercenary with some blackmail material—are willing to rack up the kinda body count he has.

Conclusion?

I'm gonna say weaker keep, but a keep.

I asked here about Sallinger...I'm not sure that redlink should BE a redlink.
