Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So about The Prince and the Pauper (talking only about the 25 minute cartoon, not the novel or any other adaptation): the Captain would not qualify in a darker setting, but this is a cartoon aimed at children and he is on the dark end of Disney villains. We see his soldiers terrorise and ransack the populace, and him feasting on their spoils; he takes advantage of the switch with no hesitation by imprisoning the prince and telling Mickey to be his puppet by threatening Pluto. His soldiers have no love for him and are clearly in it for their own share. In contrast to Pete's usual portrayal as petty and blundering, here he is cunning, ruthless and determined to get his way. In context, I feel he passes the heinous criterion.

The one factor that could disqualify him is that he is the subject of slapstick and ridicule, but only at the end and by the action of others on him. His own actions are treated with fear and disgust, in contrast to the slapstick in the rest of the film.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

Do we see the subjects harm or killed by any chance, any damage done or anything truly horrific? It's been years since I've seen that short film but I don't recall he done anything truly heinous enough to pass the baseline. I might have to give it a rewatch myself.

[up][up] Don't think so, it's pretty standard villain fare, even for Pete; it's just him being a bully to the population and then trying to steal the throne. The worst Pete ever gets is The Three Musketeers where he almost succeeds in killing Micky, Donald, Goofy, Minnie, and Daisy and has a moat full of the skeletons of past victims, and even that version has his comedic moments.

Yeah, even if he is vile for a Mickey Mouse cartoon, it's still a Mickey Mouse cartoon, so when compared to other characters on this trope, even other Disney characters, he doesn't stand out.

So all Pete's done is attempted murder? The comics had him do that regularly. I think you've underestimated the same studio that created The Horned King, dude.

[down] I'm just saying that the guy thought that, since Mickey Mouse was "kiddie fare", Pete would be easy. Don't underestimate the mouse is what im saying.

Anyway, here's my writeup for Nyarlathotep

  • Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom: Nyarlathotep, wicked as always, is the eldritch servant of Azathoth seeking to destroy Earth and other worlds for the Outer Gods. Nyarlathotep works alongside Abdul Alhazred in order to use the Necronomicon to resurrect Cthulhu, now named Thu Thu Hmong/Spot, manipulating the young H.P. Lovecraft into getting the book for them only to betray the boy and tries to use the book to bring back Cthulhu. In the second film, Nyarlathotep helps Abdul in holding Lovecraft's parent hostage under the threat of death if he doesn't give them the Necronomicon, later burns Alhazred to death after growing tired of his failure. In The Kingdom of Madness, he makes a deal with a future Lovecraft from the future to retrieve Spot to him. Once that succeeded and revives Cthulhu, he has Cthulhu destroy a planet populated by Deep Ones to demonstrate his powers, planning to destroy the entire Earth next for the Outer Gods.

  • Hindu Mythology: Putana, the "Killer of Infants", is a Rakshasi (Demon) known for killing infants by poisoning her breast milk and killing them when they feed, having done this to countless infants in the past. When King Kamsa summons her to kill the infant Krishna, Putana disguises herself as a beautiful woman in an attempt to kill him. After Krishna sucks her life force out, she reveals her demonic form and attempts to destroy the town of Vraj, managing to turn the surrounding forest to dust before being slain.

  • Operation Delta Force 5: Random Fire: Jafari Bin Kasim is the leader of a terrorist organization who had developed Mind Control technology, which he uses on captured Delta Force operatives, brainwashing them into becoming suicide bombers forcing them to commit terrorist attacks on his behalf. Introduced sending a brainwashed Delta Force member to suicide-bomb a train carrying a diplomat and his family, killing everyone aboard, Jafari had his men capture a village, and subsequently blow it up when Delta Force members tries to resolve the hostage situation, before abducting several members, one which he sends to commit another suicide bombing on the Boston Financial Center killing everyone inside. When Captain Skip and his team managed to infiltrate his hideout, Jafari reveals he already had Skip brainwashed and forces Skip to blow up himself with most of his team, and later captures Delta Force Operative Robert Johnson, and puts him through Mind Rape while forcing protagonist Brad Kennedy to watch.

[tup] to Aker and Nyarly

Alright, so I’ve just finished playing this video game called Moss and I may have a candidate to discuss, but of course lets discuss the game

What’s The Work?

Moss is an Action-Adventure game developed by Polyarc Games and built for the PS4 VR, Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest. The basic premise is that you, the reader, find a book that transports them to a fantasy land inside the book called Moss. The Reader would then meet a young mouse named Quill and begin an adventure to save Quill’s uncle from the Big Bad, Sarffog.

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

Sarffog is a gigantic fire-breathing snake responsible for the destruction and ruination of the kingdom Quill use to live in. First Sarffog would kill the king of Quill’s kingdom by having an owl pluck him out of his castle and drop him falling to his death. With the kingdom weakened with the loss of their king Sarffog would then lead the Arcane army to invade the Kingdom destroying the kingdom killing countless hundreds there.

Sarffog would then send his army to pursue the survivors of his rampage who fled into the wood with a powerful object called The Glass, where Sarffog’s army kills even more people until their champion and Quill’s uncle Arguss fends off the army saving the rest of the survivors and protect the glass while the Sarffog’s army kills the champion.

Years later The Reader would choose Quill as the newest champion and the protector of the Glass. When Argus learns of this he tries going back to the kingdom to kill Sarffog before he sends his army to kill Quill only to be capture by Sarffog and imprisoned in his castle.

Sarffog would then send Aderyn to bring Quill to him where Aderyn would convince Quill to find Argus and free Argus from Sarffog’s imprisonment. They would finally arrive at the ruined kingdom where they find themselves under Sarffog’s mercy. Aderyn apologizes to Quill for luring her to Sarffog before Sarffog kills Aderyn in front and Quill and attempts to kill Quill and retrieve the Glass from her.

After spending a large amount of time escaping Sarffog’s rampage Quill, with the help of The Reader, was able to kill Sarffog and free Argus from his imprisonment. Argus would then tell Quill that the Arcane will still pursue her to retrieve the Glass, where Quill decides to go after the Arcane and stop them once and for all.

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities? Other Militating Factors?

All that was known about Sarffog is that he was given an Arcane army to help him conquer and destroy Quill’s kingdom. That is it and its never shown that Sarffog is ever loyal to his master merely using their resources to destroy kingdoms, kill whomever rebels against him, and retrieve the Glass to make himself more powerful. So yeah no sympathetic excuse nor redeeming qualities to justify all the atrocities he commits

He also manages to avoid being a Generic Doomsday Villain by coming up with various plans such as killing the king to put his kingdom into turmoil before launching his invasion and having Aderyn lure Quill to him before he kills him once Aderyn serves his purpose before trying to kill Quill and yelling “Glass” to her showing that Sarffog isn’t a mindless animal, but instead a sentient, yet unfettered and power-hungry monster willing to kill anyone and destroy anything to get what he wants.

Heinousness

Being the Big Bad, Sarffog sets the heinous standard in this game having the king murder, invades and destroy an entire kingdom killing possibly hundreds, if not more, with countless skeletons of Sarffog’s victims seen throughout the ruin kingdom, even has his army pursue the survivor killing their champion and more lives, kidnaps Quill’s uncle and would have killed him once he served his purpose, kills Quill’s friend right in front of her before trying to kill Quill who also happens to be a child.

There was also the owl who killed the king on Sarffog’s orders and Sarffog’s masters that sent him to invade the kingdom in the first place but they dont really make any onscreen appearances in the game’s narrative leaving Sarffog the main bad guy causing all of the misery and deaths within the story, so yeah I’d say that Sarffog does more than enough to stand out, especially since the game is rated E10+.

Final Verdict?

I’ll leave it up to you guys to decide.

Changing to an abstain to Sarffog

I think I've found an image of Prince Ming murdering his mentor from the Dynamite comics (which I think is one of the versions that got approved for this trope) which I think could be used for the Flash Gordon page. Any thoughts? A trimmed version might come later if the image needs to be shortened.

[down] It's the Zeitgeist Ming from what I can gather, which is the one that got approved on this thread a while ago.

How many lines does Sarffog actually have in the game?

@Nwot Could Kamsa himself possibly count if this is the story I think it is he tries multiple times to kill the babies in his kingdom.

[up]If Ming has been approved from that comic then that image will work as long as it is cropped to the top panel.

[up] Sarffog has been given one line that the narrator narrates (as she does with the all the other characters) where Sarffog says the word "Glass!" but its clear with his behavior that he has personality and by saying the word "glass" shows us that Sarffog can talk, wants the Glass, has plotted the events to get Glass, was smart enough to kidnap Argus to lure Quill to him rather than just mindlessly kill him took sadistic joy in having Quill's friend betray her before killing her in front of Quill and is more than willing to kill Quill for glass.
