Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Purple Man. And the quote.

Harold Saxon Master was cut at one point?? You can also add D'Arby the Younger to that list. I THINK Scar too (was he up before he was cut, or was he only put up after that discussion?).

[up] Right, I think it was for being too generic or something among demons. Speaking of that franchise, Grimoire!Jinmen was included with original Jinmen at first, if you wanna include him.

There's also, kind of, Bulgarin. Before effortposts I think (way back in 2012), the Diktatorat (which includes Bulgarin) and Kazan were added as a group, then it was rewritten to just be Kazan, then I got Bulgarin last year.

Here are the Voice's write-up and Daun's rewrite:

original Daun write-up:

  • StarCraft II: Devils' Due, by Christie Golden: Ezekiel Daun, while a relatively minor character, is utterly monstrous. Daun is a Bounty Hunter and mercenary who, unless his clients specify otherwise, will torture his victims to draw out their death, and makes it theatrical by terrifying them and using psychological warfare before he moves in for the kill. He also records all his deaths as holograms, both to watch in his spare time for the memories and to show his future victims to terrify them even more.

new Daun write-up:

Daun is a Bounty Hunter and mercenary who, unless his clients specify otherwise, will torture his victims to draw out their death, and makes it theatrical by terrifying them and using psychological warfare before he moves in for the kill. At one point he flays alive a woman even though there is no bounty on her, forcing her husband to watch the entire time before moving on to him. In another instance Daun removes a victim's fingers one by one. He also records all of his deaths as holograms, both to watch in his spare time for the memories and to show his future victims to terrify them even more.

Not sure about an EP but just looking at the writeup I'm questioning a few things:

  • Jschlatt is an opportunistic tyrant who ruled as the second president of L'Manberg. Upon pooling his votes with Quackity to spin the L'Manberg election in his favor, his first action was to exile his political opponents, Wilbur Soot and Tommyinnit. Afterwards, he aggressively expanded the country, not caring for the citizens under him or the board he commands. After finding out that his secretary of state, a sixteen-year-old named Tubbo, was working in a plot against him, he had him set up a festival where his public execution by the hands of an unwilling and pressured Technoblade became the main attraction, killing a child to scare his citizens straight before becoming more aggressive to his peers in the following weeks, alienating everyone around him. Even after being overthrown and encountered as a pathetic, drunken mess, he went out of the world treating everyone around him with spite using his words and the swings of a broken bottle. Cruel and uncaring, Schlatt's actions make him a man who was hated by all and whose death was celebrated by the SMP.

A lot of this is very generic, he's got:

  • Fixing an election to win;
  • Exiling to people;
  • "Expanding" his country... whatever depth that is played for;
  • Playing up that this execution of a sixteen-year-old is something he's doing in response to the fact the guy was plotting against him;
  • Saying that the execution "scared" people and alienated them, which really doesn't belong in a CM entry;
  • Getting really drunk to the point—according to his tropes page—he dies while asking if anyone else can smell burnt toast before the heroes can fight him.

So, for noteworthy crimes we've got: a very brief touch on being an expansionist, killing someone who was plotting against him and "scaring" his population.

Are we... sure this belongs?

If he does this is in desperate need of a rewrite, as it's trying to be long while just flourishing on very jerk-level crimes.
