Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Yes to Hazuki, Land (although the David Lapham Crossed arcs are some of the most f*cked up in the series), and Sutter. Abstain on Satoshi.

If you ask me, Rab from Wish You Were Here deserves an EP more than any of those four.

Weak yes on on Amber. Deviousness combined with friendliness doesn’t always equal actual magnificence but the treating her own wound part pushes her just into impressive enough for me.

Here's the Prof write up (and thank you guys for the kind comments):

  • The Reckoners Trilogy: Jonathan "Prof" Phaedrus is the founder and leader of the Reckoners, secretly an High Epic himself. Having been forced to kill his former Super Team when they fell to The Corruption, Prof had the Reckoners take out multiple epics, while hiding his true nature from his subordinates and keeping his sanity by sharing his powers via gadgets. When David offers a opportunity to defeat Steelheart, Jon leads the team on a sabotage campaing against Steelheart's regime, sucessfully luring the tyrant to a duel by posing as a fake rival epic, even using his powers to fight Steelheart and his army. Later sacrificing his sanity to save the people of Babilar/Manhattan from Regalia and Obliteration's machinations, Prof reinvents himself as the supervillain Limelight. Retaining his strategic skill, Limelight effortlessly wipes out most of the reckoner cells and conquers the city of Ildithia, seeking to use its former ruler Larcener to drain Calamity and become the master Epic. Discovering that the surviving reckoners are sheltering Larcener, Prof deceives them with a fake deadline before launching an assault with both other epics and human foot soldiers, only being defeated because David managed to figure out his weakness.

Naze Turbine

Who is Naze Turbine?

A charming and roguish gentleman. Naze is the head of the Turbines who commands his fleet from the Hammerhead. His crew is a subset of the Teiwaz criminal group and Naze owns his roguish reputation with absolute pride. Initially a smuggler, he met the ace pilot Amida Arca and fell in love with her. The two married and Naze carved out his own criminal empire via his own strategic intellect while rescuing women from abuse, slavery, and violence. To keep them under his protection, Naze presented as a lech who married all the women as his wives. While he wasn't averse to reciprocating affection from those who offered (and had multiple kids by said wives), Naze's primary relationship with the majority of them was seeing them like his daughters. Amida was his first and the only wife he genuinely loved as a romantic partner.

When approached by Tekkadan, Naze steadily bonds to the leader of the "Orphans," Orga, and becomes like a big brother to them. Initially requested to help fight them, Naze's opinion of his employers soured and he joined forces with Tekkadan to gain their advantage. Naze assists Tekkadan in a subsequent fleet battle where he demonstrates an exemplary command of tactics.

While he assists Tekkadan with his own measured wisdom and strategic acumen, the Turbines are betrayed from within by a Teiwaz member and framed for "illegal weaponry." As a result, Naze is targeted by Gjallarhorn.

Realizing the danger, Naze uses himself as a decoy to save Tekkadan and his crew, deciding his plan will be to draw fire and when it's safe, to surrender....unfortunately, the commander of Gjallarhorn is Iok Kujan, a vainglorious idiot of a war criminal who presses the attack.

Amida, piloting in action against them, is killed in action in defending Naze. Realizing that his position is untenable, Naze decides how he's going to go out and refuses to let Amida depart alone....with only himself aboard the Hammerhead, he covers for the rest by ramming full speed ahead at Iok's ship, commenting how Amida is his sun and he can do anything as long as she shines for him...the Hammerhead is wrecked and a broken Naze is embraced by Amida's spirit, dying happily as his ship is torn apart by the resultant fire.

Mitigating issues?

Naze is smooth as hell. Well dressed, stylish, charismatic, charming. He's a criminal, gangster and smuggler with ruthless rep and a past of illegal activity but he's a HUGELY lesser evil and pretty noble under it. He undermines his old superior, overthrows him and has the guy shipped to the mines, which is pretty bad even if the guy had it coming.

Beyond that, Naze is exemplary as a criminal, tactician and he runs an operation based on rescuing women where he deeply cares for them. He doesn't use this to pressure anyone into sleeping with him. His attitude is hey, if one of them comes onto him and everything is consensual, why not? But his only true love is reserved for Amida who kinda tolerates the polyamory with an eyeroll. But both love Naze's kids dearly. Oh, and if one of his wives finds someone else? One iof them, Lafter, comments early her and Naze's relationship is absolutely physical but when she begins crushing on one of Tekkadan, Naze is delighted for them and fully supports her pursuing a relationship. One is only with Naze or his crew by consent and he wants what's best for them

And props for an absolutely incredible end. Naze doesn't plan to die but when he realizes it's inevitable, he takes it with full acceptance and prioritizes using himself as bait to save the people he loves. When Amida dies, you can tell he's shattered, but his reaction is to look briefly shocked and then smile before saying he won't let her go alone. Then he gets a touching monologue, knowing it's his last act while dying with nothing but dignity.

Conclusion?

Easy yes.

Got two proposals from a cartoon series. The first one I'm less sure about, but her episode comes first, so..

What's the work in question?

We Bare Bears is a Cartoon Network animated series created by Daniel Chong. It centers around the trio of adopted bear brothers - Grizzly, Panda, and Ice Bear - as they live their lives in San Francisco while trying to fit in human society.

While most of the episodes focus on them as adults, there are several episodes centering around when they were babies, having hijinks around the world.

(One thing that I want to say for both EPs is that while they're children in these episodes, and neither Grizzly nor Panda are the smartest tools in the shed as either kids or adults (though they aren't complete idiots either), Ice Bear has always been portrayed as very smart and competent even as a child, so if a character is able to outsmart him, they can come as impressive.)

The episode "Lazer Royale" is about the baby bears participating in a lazer tag tournament with other kids to win an ice cream sundae, but one of those kids will prove a threat..

Who is Player 01 and what has she done?

The player with the nametag 01 is one of the participants of the tournament. Panda meets her while putting up his equipment, as she shouts at him about how he should leave because the whole game is a lie and the ice cream is a trap.

Panda ignores her and joins the game with his brothers and the other kids, and once it begins, we can see her just standing and crying while everyone else battles each other. Panda sees her and tries to make her team up with his brothers, but she runs away still shouting that they're all doomed.

Later on, when it seems that Grizzly, Panda, and Ice Bear are the only players left and that they will have to defeat each other, Grizzly and Ice Bear are unexpectedly shot down, not by Panda, but by 01, who had been lying and faking her cowardly attitude to go unnoticed and hide until only they were left. 01 now tries to shoot Panda down, but he manages to dodge her until he accidentally drops his weapon that ends up hitting and defeating 01, who takes her defeat by whispering a simple "rats".

Is she magnificent?

For a little child playing in a tournament with some kids, yes I think she stands out as pretty smart and scheming. She lies to Panda to scare him, and then plays a cowardly facade in the game so that all the players ignore her so she can hide until only the bears are left. She then defeats Grizzly and Ice Bear and is only defeated by Panda because of him accidentally dropping his weapon, and for a child she surprisingly takes her defeat pretty well.

Is she a bitch?

Ok so here's the iffy part, because at the end of the day she's just a child playing a game with other kids, but like, this is isn't just some children playing some game on the street, they're participating in a tournament, held by adults, to win an award, so maybe one could see her lying and Wounded Gazelle Gambit as cheating on the game? Idk ngl.

Verdict?

Yeah ngl I'm not very sure about this, but I still wanted to at least discuss it, so letting y'all decide.

The other candidate from WBB, this one I'm more sure about being a bastard.

What's the work in question?

We Bare Bears is yada yada you have it up there.

In the episode "Christmas Movies", the baby bears are working at a video store on Christmas Eve, enjoying Christmas specials and the like, up until a certain someone asks for their help..

Who is Harry?

Harry is a suspicious-looking man who enters the store, stealing candy canes from some children, and returning to the bears a tape of a movie that's totally not How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, saying he enjoyed the stealing part, and asking them when does the store close and if there are any security guards besides them.

Then during the night, Harry comes to the store claiming to be Santa Claus, asking the bears for movie tapes which he says he'll give to kids all around the world. But when his beard falls off, the bears realize it was him wanting to steal the store, so Harry now tries to catch them to get the door keys from them.

After the bears crush him on a shelf, Harry comes up with the idea of tying a cardboard cutout of their grinch Expy to a chair so the bears would see it from above a shelf, believing him to be coming, so they would run to the door, only for the three to get trapped by Harry with a wreath.

Harry is now ready to escape with the tapes, until the bears try to talk him down about how on Christmas people should be the best versions of themselves, and when he steps on a candy cane and is asked if he's ever had a good Christmas, he's reminded of his childhood and of enjoying Christmas with his family.

Harry now sees what he has become and realizes the wrong of his actions, now asking the bears what he can do with his life, and the bears get the idea of making him a Mall Santa for the video store.

Is he magnificent?

Being your typical Grinch wannabe, I think he is, yeah. He tricks the bears into believing he's Santa Claus, manipulates them into helping him steal the store, and when the facade drops, he's able to give them a good chase throughout the store, and then gets the smart idea of using a cardboard cutout to distract them and catch them by surprise, which even Grizzly calls clever.

And as I said in the other EP, while he's fooling children here, and neither Grizzly nor Panda have ever been incredible geniuses (though they aren't total idiots either) Ice Bear has always been very smart and competent since he was young, so I think he still comes off as impressive.

Is he a bastard?

Yeah well he's a thief, literally stealing candy from children and tricking the bears so he could steal movie tapes at the video store. With that said, he never hurts the bears while chasing them, and once he reminisces of his childhood, he realizes the wrong of his actions and reforms.

Verdict?

If him just tricking kids isn't mitigating I think he can keep.

[tup] Naze and the WBB duo. The latter is a slice of life series from what I've heard, I think tricking people in a game is bad enough for the medium they're in.

What's the work?

Set after the first two Terminator films, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles follows John and Sarah Connor as they prepare for the upcoming robot apocalypse as orchestrated by the rogue A.I. Skynet. As Skynet's Terminators hunt John before he can grow up into the leader of the human resistance, the Connors are joined by one of the machines themselves, Cameron, a reprogrammed Terminator sent into the past by Future!John to help them.

The Disc-One Final Boss of the series?

Who is Cromartie?

The first Terminator to appear in the show, and one of the most persistent they face throughout. First appearing in 1999 posing as a teacher at John's new school, Cromartie reveals he's a robot when it turns out he smuggled in a gun by hiding it in his goddamn skin; when he finds John upon calling attendance, Cromartie cuts it out and begins blasting, only prevented from ending John right there because of Cameron's interference. Even that proves to be a minor roadblock; Cromartie continues to doggedly pursue them, whether by getting his hands on Sarah's phone and impersonating her voice when John tries to call her, or by hacking into the FBI's databases to piggyback on their own ongoing manhunt for the Connors. Eventually, Cromartie pursues them to a bank where Cameron's stashed a massive bazooka and a time travel device: Cromartie is blown to pieces (along with the bank itself) as the Connors go to 2007...

Where Cromartie's disembodied head, still lying there in the rubble, immediately sees them, reactivates, and remotely controls its decapitated body into retrieving him—killing a man and using his own head as a human disguise while it makes the long journey. Reassembled, Cromartie has a scientist grow him new artificial skin; kills the doctor and takes his eyes; and has a plastic surgeon make him look like an actor, before killing him too. As the FBI chase its path of carnage, Cromartie waits until after the actor is cleared of suspicion before killing and replacing him... and takes the time to learn how to impersonate the FBI when one agent, Ellison, comes by to talk to the former suspect.

Cromartie spends a good few episodes pretending to be an FBI agent to subtly hunt down the Connors, interrogating old friends and associates of theirs, and even getting to the point where he's able to just walk into the FBI headquarters and bluff his way into their files. This just so happens to get the attention of Ellison—who has begun to believe in Sarah's warnings of killer robots and organizes a strike team to take Cromartie down. The Terminator, perhaps predicably, proceeds to effortlessly murder every last one of them, sparing only Ellison so he can use him to continue hunting the Connors. And he's very insistent on this being the best course of action for the machines, so much so that he kills another Terminator sent by Skynet to replace Ellison.

Finally getting a lead on the Connors, Cromartie kidnaps the wife of Sarah's old fiance, Charley, and straps her to a bomb as a trap. While Sarah is busy rescuing her, Cromartie is free to hunt down John—and when Sarah calls John after saving the wife, Cromartie has a device set up in the building to record the cell numbers, then sets off a second bomb in an attempt to kill her. Once again impersonating Sarah's voice, he calls John to lure him out to a crowded beach fair; though John sees him coming and tries to swim away, Cromartie throws himself after John in an attempt to catch him and drag him to the watery abyss, though John manages to slip away as Cromartie sinks to the bottom.

Cromartie remains undeterred in his hunt; meeting a teen con artist with a grudge against Cameron, Cromartie uses her information to narrow down where the Connors are living. One of John's classmates is briefly able to trick Cromartie into believing they're elsewhere, but after getting his hands on a petty crook who robbed their house, Cromartie doubles back to capture Sarah, then tracks John down to Mexico (he's in Mexico at the moment, go with it). Murder ensues, John slips away, and the Connors have a massive shootout with the Terminator in an abandoned church, culminating in Cameron filling his head with uranium shotgun slugs.

Is he magnificent?

I remember Ravok calling him a badass back when we were going over the other Terminators, and holy hell is he a badass. Cromartie does not give up. Blowing him up turns out to be only a minor inconvenience; he pulls himself back together, creates a new human disguise, then covers his tracks perfectly, picking up a new way of tracking the Connors in the process when he learns to imitate the FBI agents on the case.

The manipulations don't always work, sure—he's a killer robot without emotion, his acting sucks and he often inevitably ends up just killing whoever is in his way. But even then he's able to kill things smartly. He spares Ellison in an otherwise thoroughly unstoppable massacre so he can further help him find the Connors, and the gambit with the fiance's wife leads to him almost killing all of John's allies while he comes close to drowning John personally.

Hell, he's even able to disobey Skynet when he thinks their strategy is flawed! Dude is awesome.

Too much of a bastard?

Killer robot seeking to ensure the robot apocalypse. But, like with the other Terminators, that's just what he's been programmed to do—even betraying Skynet is done in service to the overall mission, as Cromartie disagrees with the specific tactics his master uses. He's never sadistic about anything he does, merely methodical and thorough in ensuring death to his opponents.

Verdict?

Hard yes from me. From this series I'll also have Catherine Weaver, a Terminator Villain of the Week, and maybe Cameron—she counts easy, but I wasn't taking notes on her while I was watching the show, so it would take me longer to get an effortpost ready while I recall what she gets up to.

To me, Satoshi's one really ruthless moment still feels more like a panicked miscalculation than a moment of intelligence matching his other actions, while otherwise he is a Guile Hero at worst.

Yes to Naze, Harry, Player, and especially Comrartie.

I don't remember the Sarah Connor Chronicles too well, but Myron Stark might be a third keeper.

Yes to Naze, Harry, Cromartie, & a very belated switch back to yes to Superfly after mulling it over, but no to 01. Slightly underhanded tactics in children’s laser tag isn’t cutting it for me, even by the show’s standards.
